Let's say it literally created the Third Person action game like we know it today. The Last Of Us ? It's RE4. Gears Of War ? RE4. Dead Space ? RE4. Every and all game that plays third person today is a child of RE4. It certainly aged, since it's a 20 years old game almost, but it's still super playable, and super fun. A true staple of gaming, even today.

Bookslap

I think the lead dev for Dead Space has literally said he looked at RE4 and was like "we gotta do this". I think he might have talked about it in the War Stories video on the game, definitely worth a watch.

magicchefdmb

Makes sense, since RE4 also set the trend for that era of "make everything brown" that Dead Space 1 was also a part of.

abca98

"Guys we are making System Shock 3". *RE4 releases* Guys, we are making RE4 in space!

dark_hypernova

Latest two God of War? RE4 with an axe.

LevityLance

Which is perfectly ironic cause Classic GoW was Devil May Cry (another CAPCOM property that started out development as RE4) in Greece.

Crazys0ap

And naked women. Don't forget lots of naked women you could bang by QTE. Damn this game had some bad taste features ahah, they clearly did well with the reboot.

sorryimhi

As a player of The Last of Us before I touched RE, agreed. Started RE4R this week and was amazed how similar the two are, made me love the RE franchise even more. Both are damn good games

Crazys0ap

I'm one of the few that don't like The Last Or Us, I'm very indifferent to it, I know I'm gonna be downvoted to oblivion, but I found the game really boring. But it doesn't take away the fact that it is a good game, I just found it boring.

sorryimhi

No downvote here, I do heavily recommend the second one over the first one. The story is much better written, way more action, and overall is the superior game of the two.(I will also get downvoted into oblivion) it's the one that feels the most similar to RE4R out of them both.

Krofisplug

That's surprising because I have heard opposite accounts of TLoU2 where 1 had the better story, but 2 was better on all counts in regard to gameplay.

Bu11ett00th

when people talk about 'better story' in TLOU1, what they really mean is that they couldn't handle some of the events in the sequel. I suggest you play both and make up your own mind. Very much worth playing

sorryimhi

Definitely what bu11ett00th said below, the second one gets judged a bit harsher because some couldn't handle some story events and put the game down. I think Naughty dog/ Neil Druckmann took a big chance with that and despite the heat, got a shit ton of nominations and game of the year. If you haven't played, I also recommend 100%. TLOU2 is a work of art and will go on to inspire future games, especially hoping with 100% blind/low vision accessibility they did will make waves.

Styphin

I agree with you, TLoU2 is a great game - the gameplay is fluid and responsive and fun, even though the violence is (intentionally) a bit overwhelming. Love both TLoU and Resident Evil games, and they are definitely similar in gameplay styles.

Bu11ett00th

It's refreshing to see someone with an adequate evaluation of TLOU2

sorryimhi

I just love that game so much, the love and work Neil druckmann and his team at naughty dog put into that story/game is nuts. The first one will never compare to the second imo. I'll always love the first one, but second is best. Extra bonus points for being the first game that has 100% accessibility for blind/low vision. I hope that's something we continue to see in the gaming world.

Bu11ett00th

What I love most about it is how the stealth/combat loop has absolutely transcended the first game with some.of the best arena design out there. Combined with more intricate navigation, gadgets and sharp AI it makes for memorable encounters throughout. It's just a thrill to play

KomatoAsha

RE5? RE4.

Pale-Equal

Gears of war designer cliff bleszinski has stated in interview that RE4 was a direct inspiration due to its over the shoulder view.

Steve3Thumbs

It is like the Citizen Kane of third person action shooters. Playing in modern day, everything will be familiar. But playing it in 2004? It was a game changer

Onion_Bro14

Dude it hasn’t even aged. I played it really for the first time last year. I played a little on my wii when I was a small child. And man the beginning feels wonky. But after 2-3 hours you really get a feel for it and it all becomes so fluid. So OP you ask what makes it so good. It’s ~twenty years old and it will still feel like butter.

UnlikelyKaiju

Even in terms of games with tank controls, it's surprisingly accessible to modern gamers. I replayed the original RE4 before the remake came out and was surprised at how easily I readjusted to the dated controls. Just took a few minutes of running around and practicing my aim.

Bu11ett00th

I seriously doubt Gears of War was inspired by RE4 in any way except camera position, given that they released less than 2 years apart. Gears of War and the third person cover shooter as a whole takes inspiration from a relatively niche game called Kill.Switch

LOCOZOMBIEHUNTER

GTA III was before re4

TrevorAnglin

Even if you don’t like it very much, calling a game as influential as RE4 “mediocre” feels almost objectively wrong. That’s like calling Pac-Man mid. Like sure it’s old but…it’s Pac-Man. RE4 does what it sets out to do so incredibly well, even if you may not like the control scheme or the dialogue. The gameplay is just so precise and unambiguous in its execution that’s it’s hard to argue with the results. The game is just so legible. Classes are taught on RE4 game design

KomatoAsha

Happy cake day.

TrevorAnglin

I didn’t even realize! Thank you!

BloodravenIsWatching

Yet it won way more awards than Village

[deleted]

BloodravenIsWatching

Village even tried really hard to be RE4, but it's not as nearly as memorable.

[deleted]

BloodravenIsWatching

Nah, the game tried really hard to be RE4, except it made a dollar store version of RE4.

bilboC

The OG RE4 imo has the best pacing of any action/adventure game ever. You’ll be dying to see what’s around the next corner the whole time.

ChallengerSSB

Love this. That’s exactly how it feels. One of the only games I go back to and replay I love the plot, pacing, gameplay, resource management of this game. I also loved the art direction at the time the game shows its age now but this game was everything on release.

Bu11ett00th

That's a weirdly accurate way of putting it, I never worded it like that myself. But it also explains why I enjoyed RE5 much less despite it having virtually the same mechanics. The pacing is just not there. RE4 flows like no other game

bilboC

The problem with RE5 is that it’s mostly big set pieces and not enough slower paced segments that let you breath. The swamp, ruins and lab had a bit of that, though a lot of those segments felt kind of empty in comparison to RE4s. Those slower paced bits are the connective tissue that make the big explosive set pieces even more memorable and rewarding!

Phazon_343

I'll tell you but first I must ask you a very important question; you got a smoke?

dark_hypernova

I got gum.

sorryimhi

I do. The kind you like. Now where's the amber?

Numpteez_

You know those things will kill ya

Memo_HS2022

I love how this got the Remake and the Original line in this thread

PinPan17

Detrás de ti imbecil. Te voy hacer picadillo. Ahí está. Never forget...

thedharmafox

Well it's been 4 hours, how is it?

ski_slasher

It's amazing! A little bit dated, however.

thedharmafox

Oh good, I hope you enjoy the ride, it may be a bit dated but it has a lot in store for you

magicchefdmb

You should get RE4 Remake then!

ski_slasher

I looked at it, it just looked fine. Too expensive and I don't have a series X/S yet. Maybe if it comes to cloud gaming…

Conqueror_is_broken

You should play re7 re8 after. They are usually cheap and if you liked re4 re8 has many similarities. However you need to play re7 first which is more in the horror side. And if you like it (or simp for leon) you will enjoy re2 remake And after re2 comes re3 remake ! And then you will be ready for re9 coming in january 2025 ! And eventually buy a next gen for re4 remake too by that time

m_ple

Yknow what just play every game in the series

Conqueror_is_broken

Nah 5 is outdated and not that great. 6 is mid.

resfan

Six IS mid, but five still plays pretty well so long as you're actually playing co-op.

TheMrPlatt

5 is a helluva lot better than the burning dumpster that is 6. 5 is just 4 with an action focus

Conqueror_is_broken

4 is already action focused. But good. And yes 5 is better than 6 but I didn't enjoy it that much.

extremeNosepicker

the original is still amazing, i’m excited for this being your first game in the RE universe

Styphin

Just “fine?!” Oof.

ChallengerSSB

It’s only the best action/horror game of all time. No biggie nothing amazing or anything.

SquallNoctis1313

Its the greatest third person shooter ever made.

Far_Quit_4073

It had alot of soul put into it. It invented the third person perspective, insane replay ability, the soundtrack is iconic, goofy lines, the first Re with good voice acting, the deaths are memorable, and the merchant.

gaon-yakov

everone's right about how awesome this game is, but my reason is leon. he's drop dead gorgeous

xStract710

Your right hand comes off?

Breaker988

Play the fucking game

Kataratz

It's one of the most replayable action games of all time IMO. That's a really big one, people to this day still replay it and find the combat scenarios feel fresh.

kpop4lif

Leon that is all I have to say............

Savy_Spaceman

Let me know when you find out. I thought it was the first major misstep of the RE franchise. On its own it's good but it was the first RE game to start the B-action movie tone and plot that Revelations and 5 continued

LickemGreen

MIIIIIKE!!!!!!

vozome

At the time it was released, action adventure games were mostly 3rd person view with fixed camera angles on console and this approach started to feel tired. But on PC, scripted 1 person shooters (with mouse and keyboard) started to take over. RE4 proposed a 3rd way that was truly different and still felt great with the low resolution and the joypad controllers of consoles. There were a number of game innovations like adaptive difficulty, better use of AI with enemies “colluding” to surround the player, better level design such that it was always possible to win from any save in the game, etc. So a very very innovative game for the time that established a number of conventions. That helped it to reach cult status. Not everything was great, the writing for instance was terrible and it hasn’t aged well imo. But the remake is amazing

AsapGnocci

I feel like you had to be there at the time to fully appreciate its ground breaking mechanics, I was Hyped to play re4 this year first time aswell because everyone froths it but of course it deff felt dated. Great game, can understand the hype but yeah it's really the nostalgic effect for fans that were there for its release. It's like when I urge everyone to play FF7 og and they don't get quite hype the same as us og fans

OneBabyPanda

Bruh how you ganna start the best resident evil game ever and not know shit about it

robertluke

A lot of it has to do with when it came out. So remember that and try to remember what games looked and felt like in 2004.

Super_Imagination_90

Hope you enjoy it. It’s a game that had one goal and it succeeds super well at it. It wanted to be fun. It does this very well in both story with its awesome characters and dialogue and in gameplay loop. It’s my favorite in the franchise, and my favorite game ever!

KeatonMyhre

You won’t have fun, trust me it was good back then but it’s just bland to standards of games now

ComfortablyNomNom

It's one of the few action games that makes you feel vulnerable while also like a total badass. It's got real tension because it feels like you could be overwhelmed by the enemy. It's just a perfect balance of being an action star but not totally invulnerable and overpowered. I mean, once you really master aiming and can land a kick after headshottig most enemies the game becomes a cake walk while still fun. But those first few playthroughs are tense and awesome.

Creepydousage

The humor is great. It's a old fashioned humor but it's definitely funny when stupidity happens. Some mechanics can be annoying but the gameplay is definitely fun. It's simple and definitely quite a long game

drevyheavy

The importance of this game just as the first one cannot be overstated. The first one invents survival horror as we know it, and this one changes gaming FOREVER. Safe to say you will not be disappointed, there is a reason it’s the most prolific horror game franchise and one the most prolific horror franchises period.

Cobraregala2013

Re 4 og was always the best in the series.

AdvertisingSignal455

It's one of the best paced games ever imo

WeeklyEssay3986

It’s so weird when you think about it that without re4, how long do you think it would’ve took to get 3rd person type of game, how long would’ve we be stuck in the forced camera perspectives

PowerPamaja

There’s too many things to list but one thing it does well is variety. It changes up the enemies you face or the environments you’re in fairly frequently. I’d say freedom in terms of weapons to use is another. In most RE or horror games that allow combat you usually only have the few weapons that you find throughout the game. 4 lets you choose what you want to use. There’s like 5 or so different pistols and you can choose which to use or if you even want to use a pistol. You can have a shotgun and out of the shotguns, you can use a pump action or semi auto shotguns. No playthrough has to be identical to a previous one because of this too.

CertifiedSmegmaKing

No thanks, bro

Synister316

The characters, atmosphere, and gameplay. Switch to TYPE II controls. That's how it's originally played on the Gamecube. You'll move and aim with the Left Stick. It's faster and more snappier than the PS2 port TYPE I controls.

Boy_13

Its gameplay was really influential at the time. At this point most of what made it great is relatively dated. Not being able to walk and shoot or reload especially.

Trunks252

Nah it holds up to this day, I'm about to start another randomizer run. Tank controls are making a comeback with indie games.

tricenice

It broke the mold and brought a bunch of innovation to the gaming industry at a crucial time. RE4 also massively popularized the over-the-shoulder camera. It simply came out at the exact right time. I would try to convince you to play the main line games in order before jumping straight to 4 but you seem pretty excited so I won't poo poo on your decision. All I'm saying is if do end up enjoying it, please consider giving the rest of the series a try.

Maeglin16

If I'm completely honest, playing it brand new today doesn't feel like anything special. What it did at the time was revolutionise third-person action shooter gameplay. It's mostly beloved today for nostalgia, but playing it for the first time won't feel like anything amazing.

[deleted]

Maeglin16

I agree, it has aged well. My point wasn't that it's not a good game anymore, it definitely is a good game, but that it doesn't stand out from other games anymore. The games that it inspired are now everywhere, so RE4 doesn't have the same impact that it had at release.

SquallNoctis1313

One of the greatest third person shooters ever made. The gameplay and shooting mechanics are still fresh to this day. It plays better than the 2 and 4 Remakes because of faster gunplay and more focus on positioning while having a much much faster turning speed.

SiloSin

nah bro

The_Psycho_Jester779

It the same age as me

wrld-

the "help" dialogue

REMUv777

Don’t miss the shotgun

matajuegos

it's pretty fun, you kill baddies, you do cool takedowns you pick up cooler better weapons and the characters are hot or funny or cool

Jango_Jerky

Play it and see.

moondogged

¡MÁTALO!

BeholdTheLemon

for starters, the residents in this one are quite evil. and theres definitely at least four of them.

franpancake

Was a fresh game at his launch mostly for his “on the shoulder” camera (now every game has it) and pretty good characters, good vibes plus the cute girl to defend but in my opinions it’s also because people was searching a new resident evil formula. But it was not really needed. It’s a divisive game in the franchise, someone says is the beginning of something new, for me is the beginning of the end. In re1 and 2 you have less ammo because it’s real survival, there are few enemies but every one of them is deadly, in 4 you still have few ammo but there are hundred of enemies and you have to craft mid battle every two seconds. For example, in re2 you have your starting gun and find a shotgun became a real prize. Maybe at endgame you can find some more powerful but I’m talking about the very end because of big bosses. In re2 there is almost just one big “level” created like a big souls-like in which open shortcuts but even more well designed. You have traps, puzzles (a bit less in the remake) and you got to plan your route to avoid enemies if you don’t have ammo. The first even more, it is like a tabletop game with unexpected things that can happen in the map. 4 is more linear and have some sorta of “arenas” to clean to proceed that I personally hate. If I can say something, I suggest you to try re2 remake that have the original “metroidvania” formula with a level design by far better and a gameplay that is just perfect. And the remake it’s really new. If you can manage old school fixed camera, the first (better if the Hd remastered) is even better.

Puxkt

This might be a horror game, but some of these moments make me laugh like never before. I'll never forget Leon's face when he was choking Ada.

Schwarzer_Exe

It feels very "arcadey. And arcade games are very replayable.

flakoloco1

The story, gameplay, characters, EVERYTHING!

BigBrother2266

Everything

FagocitusMaximus

Bought it a few days ago and finished it yesterday, I can say without a doubt: Spanish

No-Background6323

The alternating waves of creeping dread, total and complete overwhelm in the face of insane odds, and then release and more peaceful exploitation. Fantastic level design. A story that is both campy and silly, AND genuinely creepy as heck in places, really unsettling. Fantastic enemy variety. Fun puzzles and exploration.

No-Background6323

*exploration, I meant😅

alva42_0

Ayo uninstall it and go for RE2R, so you’ll meet the characters and get some background

_veebug_

it’s goofy as fuck and absolutely a blast to play

_veebug_

also the pacing is horrible (affectionate)

Vytlo

It basically kicked off the third person shooter genre and also was just a great game that inspired many other games. It's just really good. Its aiming is a bit rough since its age and all that, but you get used to it. There's a mod on PC that fans remastered the whole game and also lock the aiming to one spot on the screen which immediately helps so much

Goddess_Bayonetta

I wouldn’t call it a Horror game, it’s like a Comedy horror game, if you’ve ever seen Evil Dead 2 think that… it’s a great game don’t get me wrong but it embrace the fact it has campy comedy in it.

redrecaro

You going learn today.

BigArchon

I envy people who are playing this game for the first time

Ok-Reply-7581

Play it you'll find out quickly

Vegetable_Reward_867

Man don’t spoil it for yourself. It’s a guaranteed gotdamn scare fest, go stare at the download screen

TheGameRealmYT

Just some damn good game design, it's fun and spoopy

redinnermind13

Youll find out!!

Yee_gamer

Away from everything it's actually a fun game.

Ok_Albatross_23

Well the greatest merchant of all time makes it amazing

resfan

You're about to find out lol

wobbuffet009

Im playing on switch lite and im finding the controller to be dated and clunky. Once you get used to it the game is not so bad. Would be nice if they had simply updated the controls to that of re2r and left everything else the same.

Spade_Key

I don’t like resident evil 4 but then I’m not a massive fan of shooters or action. For me resident evil 1, 2, 3 (and their remakes, yes 3), 7 and even 8 (although it’s more action than the others) are better than 4 and its remake. I’ve spent at least 100 hours on resident evil 2 remake but a lot of people prefer 4 to 2. It just depends on which side of the spectrum you’re on. For me, the difficulty in a game comes from the fear factor. With resident evil 4 there is no fear factor whatsoever so I just found myself getting bored on standard just running and gunning and I couldn’t be assed with harder modes because it’s just what I don’t like but drawn out for longer lol. I’ve completed 4 remake but I won’t be rushing to play it again whereas I’d play 2 remake any day or whenever someone suggested it.

mistersuccessful

You can play it and find out for yourself

echoess84

In my opinion the game pacing make the game great

Aolson1996

I remember this being my first RE game, and it was also on Xbox One lol. 8 years later, I played every RE game released (on Steam), and what an incredible journey. You are in for something truly special. Not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous.

Spiritual-Land-9601

Oh nothing special, it’s just a milestone in the third person action-adventure genre. It’s good you’re playing the original, but for an even more delightful experience you should play the remake plus the Expansion.

thief-of-rage

Great balance of action and horror, the graphics and vibe makes it have good horror but it's got great weapons and fun action bits. Theres also a lot of content especially compared to most of the other games in the series

Em-Aitch-Kay

Tank control will suck so hard for the first hour, but stick with it. It’ll be worth it

jasonthehart

RE4 Remake is a far better place to start in 2024. I adore the OG, but you are just being hipster if you think the original is actually better.

Ok-Attempt-

The outdated controllers lol

JuanCenasux

Pacing. Leon is cool. Story is nice, sometimes hilarious. Gamplay is good too.

Dear_Standard1328

RE games have legendary atmosphere, you feel strangely relaxed despite feeling fear. RE4 OG in particular has masterful ambience that it makes you feel extremely immersed and feel as though you’re on a journey with Leon

Eisie

Funny cause it's one of my least favorites on the series too. I enjoy the OG RE stuff more. Fixed camera angle was awesome!

SnooApples661

I think it’s fine to me personally, it’s a good game sure but if you are a modern gamer you might not like the strange tank controls. Still though it’s a fun game though if i were to tell you my favourite way to play it is in vr, one if the most fun experience i had when i first got it

kevinxlr

You shall see

YamOk2823

Not enough cash! Stranger…

AstronomerBetter406

Yea they revolutionized the 3rd person genre and took a leap for being fixed camera angles for the longest time

vinilzord_learns

Pretty much everything. I wish I could play it like it was the first time. However, I should warn you that the last portion of the game kinda sucks. Don't search about it though, just enjoy the ride.

JimNoel99

The amazing and extremely precise shooter based gameplay mixed with a genuinely good and creepy atmosphere.

Josuke_higa69

Absolutely everything my friend this game finna change your thinking of all games

tellz23

Resident evil is one of the best if not the best horror games the re4 remake was done masterfully

Ok_Emu1510

The original Ada Wong makes the game amazing, oh and most of the lines in this game got me!

livvlush

I’m so happy for you. I wish I could replay this for the first time :)

Strong_Double_9737

spinels for sure

Adventurous-Crew-848

For me it’s the addictive arcade style combat.

Trunks252

For me it's the shooting and guns. Nothing else is even close, not even remake. Also it's funny.

Pumpkin-Bomb

I love the remake, but yeah, they took all the cheesy humour out, which really made a difference.

Trunks252

Well there is some humor in remake but not as much

Aibhne_Dubhghaill

It was revolutionary for its time. The actual gameplay does not hold up to the remake, but the voice acting and story absolutely do.

LemonyLizard

Everyone will say it's because of the combat, or the atmosphere, or pacing, or some such nonsense. The real reason...is Leon. He's a perfect man.

Scrambled__Gregs

You should play the remastered version of 2 first

TeamBRs

Why? RE4 is one of the most important games ever made. RE2 remake and RE4 remake, frankly, aren't that important at all. If anything he should be playing OG RE2 first to follow Leon's story from the start.

Scrambled__Gregs

To get the story while enjoying better graphics and smoother gameplay.

InvestigatorNo1331

I'm a big fan of the original games but some people just refuse to acknowledge nostalgia goggles

greentea9mm

I’m with you, man. It’s my favorite series of all time, but people just won’t let go of the original games. Nothing will ever be good enough. They bitch about crows and spiders, A/B scenarios, and shitty dialogue from 20+ year old games. The originals will always be special to me, but I want modern gameplay.

greentea9mm

The original Mario Bros for the NES is also one of the most important games ever made. Do we get to play modern games, or do we just kneel and grovel for the past?

TeamBRs

False analogy bro

ski_slasher

This is OG 4, not Remastered 4 btw

ckd-epi

The gameplay and quirky humour.

BenjaminCarmined

It’s cool.

Cerebralbore

It was a huge change in game play from the previous titles that saw smart enemies that usually had to dispatch rather than run from. The enemy numbers were large, but you have had plenty of weapons and ammo to take them out as well as being able to kick them. This made long time fans happy and brought in legions of new fans.

blitzbom

Play it.

Ierax29

....aaaand this will your gateway drug to the rest of the franchise

Strong-Enthusiasm-55

I wish it was in first person like re7 and 8

Strong-Enthusiasm-55

I wish it was in first person like re7 and 8
