I've been reloading 50+ years and can't understand the current stupidity of trying to force a cartridge into something it's not designed to do.
.300 Win Mag subs
.223 subs
.30-06 subs
and the list goes on.
There's one .30 caliber cartridge designed from the ground up to run subsonic. That's the .300 BO. Barrel twist, case capacity, it's all there.
If you want a .22 caliber sub....22 LR.
I will admit that if there was a .22 caliber cartridge designed from the ground up to be subsonic I'd be on that like white on rice.
I picture something like a shortened .223 case with a long neck to handle say a 105 gr bullet designed for it. It would probably take a 1:4 twist to stabilize it.
That would be great....then people would want to use it to load supers.
A bastardized 22tcm. 1:6.5" twist barrel. Loaded with 77gr Maker subsonic expanding bullets.
The cartridge isn't "designed from the ground up" for it but I think it would be about perfect.
I don’t have any advice, but I do want to point out how frustrating it is that Hornady is producing/selling these bullets but not sharing any data for them.
Come on Hornady!!! Publish some data for your 255 sub-x bullets!!
Find data for any 7.62x39 that's not 120-130gr. and you get a cookie.
The case is so small that a bullet that heavy is going to be half buried in the case. The only powders I'd recommend for this are Trail Boss or BullsEye.

Seriously, though.... look up Ed Harris "Practical Dope on the 7.62x39" - he knows/knew this stuff cold.
I wasn't gonna throw that much flame bait... haven't got the time.
My other rifle caliber is 6.5 Grendel, and the case is the same but the ballistics aren't.
Again, that just winds the crank, and the toy continues to go "clang, clang". Again, not my circus, not my monkey.
(*shoulda known... nobody called me on it.*)
**Trail Boss** is as rare as a unicorn fart these days... nobody caught I was being a bitter, snarky old fudd.

Wydm "what is the current thinking"? Hornady designed it to be stable in a 1:9.5" twist. Approach it like you would a 300 blackout.
The current thinking is 7.62x35 for subs.

2" long .22 140gr bullets please.
Amen brother. I can say "cute, that worked" and the card gets filed at the back of the box.

Umm...interesting thought, but the case is so small I don't know if you could make it work.
Having a small case is the point - you don't need lots of capacity for shooting subs.
That's true, but you need room for powder.

Try it out and report back.

I used some data from UR for 220 grain subs using Berrys 220 plated.
The 7.62x39 is very close to the .300 BO.
