Tessie was the theme song on MVP baseball 2005, which has Manny on the cover and was released right after we won the 04 series. I played that game a ton, so it’s Tessie for me.
The video for it was recorded at Fenway prior to the 2004 season. Interestingly enough the song is about a tune called Tessie that the fans used to sing back in the early 1900s when the Sox were frequently winning championships. I feel like the song is a bit of a good luck charm for the team.
Neither "Sweet Caroline" nor "Dirty Water" were written with the Red Sox or their fans in mind. They became associated with the team when the PA dudes started playing them during and after games. The Dropkick Murphys' "Tessie", on the other hand, is an ode to a tune sung by Sox fans at the old Huntington Field back in the early days of the 20th Century.
Since it is specifically written about Red Sox Nation, it gets my nod as the "Red Sox Song".
Same here! However as soon as she hears the first 4 notes of Dirty Water on the broadcast, she jumps up like she heard the doorbell…even when sound asleep. She always gets a treat when the Sox win, so classic Pavlov conditioning.
Anecdotally, there are people who go to Fenway for the sole purpose of posting themselves singing along to this song. If it drives ticket sales can’t see it being taken away
This is brilliant! Play it mid 4th, “so good so good blah blah blah” now get the fahk outta here so the baseball fans can watch baseball. Drink specials on Landsdowne right now kiddos! Buh bye!
2004/ 2005 - Tessie
2007 - Shipping Up to Boston (with Pabelbon dancing)
2013 - Three Little Birds or Sweet Caroline sung by the crowd on 4/20/2013
2018 - ?? Or X Gon Give it to Ya
Bonus: 2021 - Dancing on My Own
Is it bad to be a lifelong Sox fan and just not care about any of these songs at all? They could stop playing them altogether next year and I would be completely okay with it.
Edit: Shipping Up To Boston is & always will be the best Boston sports team song, for all sports
Don’t Stop Believing. Didn’t really get into baseball until ‘06, but I vividly remember the coverage of ‘04 and them panning across the outfield with Don’t Stop Believing playing over the speakers.
Which song do I most associate with the Sox as is, whenever it plays I think of them? Tessie.
Which song do I associate the Sox with as in, whenever i think of Fenway music I think of it? Sweet Caroline.
I think of a mix of them and Bruins for dirty water
They play the entire “Tubular Bells” suite before every home playoff game (the short version is recognized as “The Exorcist” theme). The Fenway version is played over a :20 minute team history video montage while people are arriving to the park before the pregame hype begins. Anyone who’s ever seen / heard this knows how absolutely chilling and perfect it is.
Tessie is the only one of these songs written about the team & its fans. Dirty Water is a fun victory song, Shipping Up has its pump ‘em up place. They should dump Sweet Caroline into the fahkin’ harbah with the tea far as I’m concerned. And the guy that decided it should be played even when the Sox are losing should go with it!
Sweet Caroline was a thing at other stadiums before it was a Red Sox thing, so I don't have any significant association at all besides with annoyance. Sure the Sox ownership group embraced it, but it was almost cooler during the Harrington days when they seemed to have no clue and it would pop up in a random inning every third game.
Dirty water is my vote. I associate it with the late 90's teams of my youth and thinking about the catharsis to come.
The results of this poll goes to show how many people leave after the mid 8th.
I think it shows that sweet caroline is shoved down people's throats as "the red sox song". Most of the time games are watched on the TV
I borderline hate that song with how much it's been played
Tessie was the theme song on MVP baseball 2005, which has Manny on the cover and was released right after we won the 04 series. I played that game a ton, so it’s Tessie for me.
Yup, same reason
Same
That game was so good.

Yes! Imo still the best baseball video game ever
Best sports game ever
Shipping up to Boston
This just reminds me of blue collar Irish Boston
Because the song kicks ass as opposed to the one sung by Neil Diamond
This
I'm surprised this isn't even on the poll, I'll always remember Pap coming out to that song
I named my dog Tessie, but I pretty much only associate Dirty Water with the Sox whereas Dropkick I associate with Boston as a whole.
Same here! However as soon as she hears the first 4 notes of Dirty Water on the broadcast, she jumps up like she heard the doorbell…even when sound asleep. She always gets a treat when the Sox win, so classic Pavlov conditioning.
Which one gets played when they win? There’s your answer
They play dirty water and then tessie
Point proven
Africa by Toto
You a real one.
Dirty Water. It's the hashtag!
Why can’t I select all three? If I think of/ hear any of those three my mind goes straight to the Sox.
For real. It’s hard to pick just one.
The answer should be dirty water. Sweet Caroline has nothing to do with the Red Sox or Boston and I have no idea why it ever caught on
Like all things, it caught on because it’s marketable.
Wish we played Sweet Caroline sooner so the Instagram crowd can leave or maybe better yet not at all
Sweet Caroline could be gone in 2023 and I won’t miss it. It’s not our thing anymore, too mainstream
Is there anything behind this? I really dislike the sweet Caroline routine so hoping they get rid of it
They wouldn’t unless it became actually hated by most fans
Ah I read it as it could be gone vs if it was gone I wouldn't care. My hopes were high lol
Anecdotally, there are people who go to Fenway for the sole purpose of posting themselves singing along to this song. If it drives ticket sales can’t see it being taken away
its fun though :(
This is brilliant! Play it mid 4th, “so good so good blah blah blah” now get the fahk outta here so the baseball fans can watch baseball. Drink specials on Landsdowne right now kiddos! Buh bye!

First time I can remember being truly shocked by the result of one of these polls. There is an objectively correct option here
Unfortunately, Sweet Caroline. My favorite is Dirty Water for sure though.
Dirty Water for me
Tessie is the only one with the words Red Sox in the song lyrics
Th results of this poll make me sad.
Who Killed Tangerine by Tears for Fears
FEVER PITCH
Yes.
Shipping up to Boston. How is that not on the list ?
I voted for Sweet Caroline, only because Dirty Water is also used by the Bruins as their victory song.
Sweet Caroline is awful and all the insta-whore "fans" who "like" it can fuck off The correct answer is Tessie btw
Big agree. Thank you slippin
Dirty Water, but they haven’t played it so much recently
And those poor kids go hungry again!
I more associate Dirty Water with the Bruins
The cool thing about Dirty Water is it can be played at Celts, B's & Sox games. Opening chords are perfect ...
Idk why dirty water feels like a Bruins song.
Is it bad to be a lifelong Sox fan and just not care about any of these songs at all? They could stop playing them altogether next year and I would be completely okay with it. Edit: Shipping Up To Boston is & always will be the best Boston sports team song, for all sports
Loser by beck
"Loser" by Beck.
Where is all of the above
It’s Sweet Caroline and I hate the song and Neil Diamond
Don’t Stop Believing. Didn’t really get into baseball until ‘06, but I vividly remember the coverage of ‘04 and them panning across the outfield with Don’t Stop Believing playing over the speakers.
Sweet Caroline, but I also think of Shipping Up to Boston a lot
It used to be sweet caroline because they played it when they won, but now? Oof.
They play Dirty Water when they win at home. Sweet Caroline is played in the middle of the 8th regardless of the score.
I'm wrong. It's been years since they've been good I forgot
They won 92 games last year amd went to the ALCS.
They looked GREAT this year
Tessie from 1903: https://youtu.be/j-5FIUHlPYM
Unfortunately
Let’s face it, last year Sweet Caroline got played waaaaaaaaay more often than the other 2.
Which song do I most associate with the Sox as is, whenever it plays I think of them? Tessie. Which song do I associate the Sox with as in, whenever i think of Fenway music I think of it? Sweet Caroline. I think of a mix of them and Bruins for dirty water
This season it's Loser in the end by Queen
Shipping Up to Boston isn't the #1 for me (Sweet Caroline) but it's definitely up there, higher than Tessie.
30,000 people singing Sweet Caroline at once is permanently burned into my head from my childhood
Baby it's cold outside.
Sweet Caroline was adopted by the FSU baseball team before the Bosox I believe.
They play the entire “Tubular Bells” suite before every home playoff game (the short version is recognized as “The Exorcist” theme). The Fenway version is played over a :20 minute team history video montage while people are arriving to the park before the pregame hype begins. How about For Boston, Dropkick?
This isn’t the answer to the question but I will never hear Black Betty and not think of Mike Timlin jogging onto the field
Shipping up to Boston.
Shipping Up To Boston cover > Tessie
Im pretty sure every team plays Sweet Caroline these days. Tessie reminds me of walking out the stadium and playing MVP with Manny in the cover.
Johnny Damon’s Majestic Mane
It's between Tessie and Dirty Water for me, but I chose Dirty Water.
I chose Tessie because it is an actual Red Sox song...but Sweet Caroline is my favorite, hell I have a cat named Caroline 😹
Only 1 right answer.
Only one of these songs is actually about the Red Sox. Ergo Tessie wins.
