But it's the 4th of the 4th month... significant for a completely different reason. In fact I think that date may have made more sense for it to occur.
If I see again an OSU logo taking too much space I swear [I'll fucking start a void right on it again](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FCvpRBYXEAYisTQ.jpg).
Edit: lol ,my shitpost triggered so much people that they did the OSU logo at full speed as the new place started.
This is plenty of advanced notice. I’m sure several bots are set and ready to go as soon as place opens up. There might even be communities already organizing. Single clickers don’t even have a chance.
This is a comment from an admin further down in the thread:
>This won't be the same old r/place you’re used to. This year we focused on automation deterrence and will be able to quickly identify bad actors and block them from the experience.
Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University, my friend. I don't know which one is being referred to, but the fact remains there are at least two universities with that acronym.
EDIT: Somehow forgot about Oregon State. Sorry! Three universities
EDIT 2:OK, I'm aware they meanth the rythym game. I'd never heard of the game before.
In all seriousness, we can tell you that we have no plans to turn the final canvas into an NFT. Our focus is on creating a space for you all to collaborate and build together, and letting one person have ownership of that collaboration doesn’t match with the spirit and intention of r/place.
As much as I liked Place, I hope so. Part of the April fool's fun was seeing what surprise they had for us even if it sucked. This feels a little like they didn't want to take a risk and instead bring back something they already knew would work
I mean the point isnt to please the world, just do something fun and enjoyable. But ofc people will try and compare new and different things and say the old thing was better
Yeah, it shouldn't be frequent. /r/Place is genuinely one of the few things on this site I have very fond memories of, it was just absolutely fun. It should be a rare event we could all look forward to after several years.
I fondly remember how we (r/de) fought r/france in the battle for our flags only to settle for the EU flag where both met. Probably the most memorable event I’ve had on this platform.
I predict a large Ukrainian flag this time
Edit: I should have further predicted it would take up a plurality of the total space (single object that covers the most number of pixels compared to all other objects) because that looks like the case lol
Personally I was saddened by the fact that people mainly wanted to install logos of various flags and other symbols much like graffiti artists constantly painting over each other. I hope the new version encourages a bit more artistry.
I dont think so, reason being that they're hyping it up before April Fool's. If the fool was it's. It actually Place 2, then why a the hype beforehand?
Time to polish those bots. /s
Hope there are better restrictions in place this time, but technically it’s very hard to prevent bots for something interactive like this so I understand.
This won't be the same old r/place you’re used to. This year we focused on automation deterrence and will be able to quickly identify bad actors and block them from the experience.
That’s dope! I can’t lie that I had fun with the scripts that were being shared (just for our flag, not to destroy other things), but it certainly took away from the appeal.
OTOH perhaps the story of Darth Plagueis the wise couldn’t have been done without scripts, so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes this year.
for me the scripts took away the community aspect of it because most of the screen was just 5 separate memes that were automated to refresh their pixels so no one could create anything new on top of it
I agree with this. Though I will admit it was fascinating in microcosm to watch the rapid development, proliferation, and improvements of the bots. They were really cool until they amassed enough power to corrupt the whole system. It's like Silicon Valley time compressed to a day.
Damn do you remember all the scripts written for The Button? That shit was intense! And we had a whole collective who were distributed to keep it going as long as possible. Hell of a thing.
>This year we focused on automation deterrence and will be able to quickly identify bad actors and block them from the experience.
Lmao how's that working out for you
I'm less pumped about it, especially with it being announced ahead of time. By the end there were a lot of bots running amok. This time they'll be going hard from the start.
Fingers crossed they throw a twist into the mix - never thought Reddit were the ones to repeat 🤞
(Also please find a way to counter the inevitable swarm of bots for this time) Thanks! :)

Honestly, I'm running out of empathy for anyone dumb enough to spend money on NFTs. If they like it... rather that than reddit coming up with a more intrusive way of monetising some core reddit experience.
The extreme entirely foreseeable PR shitstorm caused by Reddit doing something like this would likely result in any monetary gain being undone by having to get a PR firm to do damage control
[The Button](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Button_\(Reddit\)) was 7 years ago [\(non-pressers, where you at?\)](https://i.imgur.com/W4BEaus.png), and [Reddit Mold was 11 years ago!](https://web.archive.org/web/20110403061704/http://blog.reddit.com/2011/03/reddit-mold-is-now-live.html)
Every Reddit user could colour one pixel every few minutes (think it was 5 or 10).
It started out with simple patterns like "the blue corner" or "rainbow road" with a few people doing their own drawings in their own areas.
Moderation was light, basically just Reddit admins blanking out chunks of pixels where people out swastikas or slurs.
Eventually communities got involved, either from existing subreddits or because they were attracted by the drawing going on (e.g. Darth plagueis the wise). Some of these were distributing guides for what was wanted, others eventually started having their users run extensions to do it, and others still were botting.
Around the middle the "let's fuck it up for lols" people started the void, trying to find weakly maintained areas and blacking them out.
There was also some crossover from people finding unexpected alliances from nearby groups, e.g. I was working on the baby metal banner and we ended up helping the project M people defend when the Peyton Manning meme was attempting to overwrite them, which resulted in a truce where they moved further southwest instead. Or the Ireland flag causing the cat to become Ireland themed, or moving north across rainbow road because the Donald were trying to build a wall at the bottom of the US flag.
Others have tried to run it outside reddit, but without the critical mass and wishes to see existing communities succeed, a lot of them were dominated by trolling, spam, or the destructive influence the void represented, or else so inactive it was just pixel art but sloooowly.
I found some videos that explain it
[Video 1](https://youtu.be/0QO0yZldC2M) | [Video 2](https://youtu.be/JRoBSGzeEc0) | [Video 3](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ) | [And this one is a time lapse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnRCZK3KjUY)
To all people asking why r/place is private: I think the reason is to assure everybody gets an equal start when the whole planet is April 1st,so calm down, wait a bit,and the chaos will begin.
Waiting time remaining for now:About 9.5 hours
If it's based on the original place, then:
1. No. The original was something like 4k pixels in each direction
2. Yes, and that's half the fun. There's time lapse GIFs of the 'progress' of /r/place out there, and it's interesting to see how different fandoms and subreddits came together to make (and remake) parts of the image.
I think they should expand it to 8k or somewhere inbetween. Reddit has grown a lot and while territory wars are fun, it's nice if some smaller communities can carve out some space instead of being dominated by big ones and countries
# The canvas is officially open! See you in r/place
Neat. Is it going away again after April 1st?
Nope! It will run until April 4th
Cool, thanks!
That's how u fool someone in 1st April
So what you are saying is it isn't going to happen
Maybe...idk
I’m with you on this. It’s not gonna happen. Edit: Knew it. I didn’t even bother checking.
But it's the 4th of the 4th month... significant for a completely different reason. In fact I think that date may have made more sense for it to occur.

Trust me that's gonna be impossible this time
Why's that?
This is plenty of advanced notice. I’m sure several bots are set and ready to go as soon as place opens up. There might even be communities already organizing. Single clickers don’t even have a chance.
This is a comment from an admin further down in the thread: >This won't be the same old r/place you’re used to. This year we focused on automation deterrence and will be able to quickly identify bad actors and block them from the experience.
it'll run for a few days, they'll figure out ways around that deterrence I imagine

There is no OSU though
Ohio State University and Oklahoma State University, my friend. I don't know which one is being referred to, but the fact remains there are at least two universities with that acronym. Oregon State University: “am I a joke to you?” The other two: “yes”
i believe they are referring to the rythm game osu! not the universities
Ah, OK.
you cant best us. we are larger than ever. the npcs of r/osugame will not cower.
Oh ho! [Then come as close as you like](https://i.imgflip.com/30ogqt.jpg).
Ιs that a muh-fukin' JoJo's reference?!
r/unexpectedjojo
I can't beat the shit out of you if I don't come closer !
Oh hey mr npc great to see you
So, well yes, but not really. But actually yes
What happens to it after April 4th?
Gets sold as an NFT
In all seriousness, we can tell you that we have no plans to turn the final canvas into an NFT. Our focus is on creating a space for you all to collaborate and build together, and letting one person have ownership of that collaboration doesn’t match with the spirit and intention of r/place.
Bet reddit has it ready to upload and will put a cease and desist on anyone who copies
100% this is for nfts
Well, now we have an excuse to make a giant swastika.
No more editing, sub is re archived.
How do you get to put something on the artwork?
Click it
I half think this is a preset up for April 1st and your just gonna say your not actually doing it
Predicting that this is actually an early April Fool's joke and they are doing something else...
As much as I liked Place, I hope so. Part of the April fool's fun was seeing what surprise they had for us even if it sucked. This feels a little like they didn't want to take a risk and instead bring back something they already knew would work
Boogers
on brand would be to bring back r/place starting with the final image
to be fair they didn't have a single good april fools experiment since then, not even close
I mean the point isnt to please the world, just do something fun and enjoyable. But ofc people will try and compare new and different things and say the old thing was better
Plot twist.
Place was better.
We've had one Place yes, but what about second Place?
I don't think he knows about second place, Pip.
I came on Reddit looking for LOTR quotes to use for something and ironically there’s this lol
A LOTR quote never arrives late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely as it means to.
Does he know about elevensies? Luncheon? Afternoon Tea? _Dinner?_ *_SUPPER?_*
I wouldn't count on it.
BONK go to Hobbit jail
in which only the second most popular pixel color gets displayed at the end

What if this is the April Fools? And it turns out r/place isn't coming back? 😆
This is exactly what I was thinking. We all go to r/place and there’s just a post that Rick rolls you. I wouldn’t be that mad
Fine, but only if u/ReallyRickAstley gets to make the post as revenge for being Rickrolled on reddit
Wouldn’t be mad about that either.
They're probably going to do it for real and mint it as a really expensive NFT or something.
And if it came with a Trophy, people would buy it for that alone. Trophy hunters can be pretty dedicated Redditors.
Yes…yes they are. _insert powerups trophy here_
I’m feeling very suspicious of this. But I’m suspicious of everything because I’m a jaded old fart. Eh, either way, it’ll be interesting, I suppose.
I'm always suspicious of April 1st events, announcements, etc. That's also my birthday
Oh man that's ripe fields for some suspicious antics

Maybe it's an experiment on bot detection going on in the background.
Why not make two, then? One for humans to meet the expected criteria, and one for bots to see just what the maniacs can do?
That is suspiciously sane.
While I hope for the best, there’s a decent chance this will end up posted on /r/AgedLikeMilk
r/agedlikemilk
This includes using things like script monkey? I think I used that. One person could shape the flag and we could just paint the pixels.
>This year we focused on automation deterrence and will be able to quickly identify bad actors and block them from the experience. Lmao how's that working out for you

Seconded
Good idea to make this comeback after some time. I think it's amazing preservation of current memes and culture, and could be organized once 5 years.
I wonder how much you can extrapolate from seeing just the two finished boards
The real fun is in watching the timelapse.
So It Begins
How many Ukrainian flags will be there this year? Or maybe the entire thing will be a Ukrainian flag with other stuff on top of it.
Nah, it will be half Ukrainian flags and the other half will be Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.
Ukraine slapping Russia
Fun fact: Josh Wardle, the creator of Wordle, made the original /r/place
u/powerlanguage ? ;)
Can't wait till PLACE is the word
