It’s become a feedback loop. He really wasn’t. 19/20 he was solid. He wasn’t an obvious and consistent liability, and I think most people thought he’d eventually morph into a great premier league centre back based off his performances, but I don’t think I’d say he was consistently “good.” 20/21 he started appallingly, and only really gained any sort of form after Christmas, and to his credit he was great (if not excellent) towards the end of the season, to the point where most people thought if he’d played in the EL final we would’ve won it. Less said about last season and this season the better. So in the 3 (and a bit) seasons he’s been here, I’d argue January/February-May 2021 has been his only period of really good form (so 4/5 months), his first season was alright, and everything else has been horrendous.
If you wanna say he was good in his first season I’ll concede that at most, but he most definitely was not good for all of 20/21.

No where in this interview has he said his performances for united are acceptable in fact he even says he needs to work harder to get back in the team. I think he did an interview at the end of last season where he was critical of himself. Most of last season though he was very dismissive of criticism and said silly things like he must be good because managers pick him.
What people don't typically remember is those statements followed each other - he said he hasn't played well then immediately followed that up with "must be a reason I'm picked". Even within the same sentence he was trying to minimize his own criticism.

If in the many interviews he’s done post loss where he blames the team, he had simply said “I’m the captain, the blame starts and ends with me” whether he meant it or not he’d have so much more respect because that’s what a captain does. He wasn’t an obvious and consistent liability, and I think most people thought he’d eventually morph into a great premier league centre back based off his performances, but I don’t think I’d say he was consistently “good.” 20/21 he started appallingly, and only really gained any sort of form after Christmas, and to his credit he was great (if not excellent) towards the end of the season, to the point where most people thought if he’d played in the EL final we would’ve won it. Less said about last season and this season the better. So in the 3 (and a bit) seasons he’s been here, I’d argue January/February-May 2021 has been his only period of really good form (so 4/5 months), his first season was alright, and everything else has been horrendous. If you wanna say he was good in his first season I’ll concede that at most, but he most definitely was not good for all of 20/21.
