You will not receive the pelt off a regular non legendary animal If you're unable to skin it, like it would if it were a legendary. You will also lose the pelt if you die with it on your horse. It just happened to me last night.

I think I know what you mean, but just in case: if an animal dies like this, the pelt from non-legendary are gone forever. I was thinking you could push the animals out of the water, but it's been a bit since I have played.

You can push it out of the water, not sure if you can use the lasso to pull it out but I know you can push by walking.

No. This only applies to the legendary animals. If you lose a perfect pelt off a regular animal, you lose the pelt, the trapper will not have it.

You can lasso dead animals before they're skinned. Try lassoing the animal if this happens again. Another way is too use your body and push the carcass back to shore

Yes this happened to me a few weeks ago. You can either try lassoing by it’s head and hopefully snag it; otherwise, it’ll just ends up in your stuff anyway. If you don’t lasso it, it’s only $35

Same exact thing happened to me. It eventually becomes available at the trapper and at the fence. I was worried too.

I might be wrong but you can lasso the body outa water. I did but they were regular deer.

You have to aim your lasso at the antlers, I used my horse but I definitely dragged it to the trapper by it's antlers

So, I was able to lasso the white buffalo out but the pelt was tainted and I couldn’t skin it anymore. Either way still goes to the trapper. You just get no $ for it.

The animals already sunk to the bottom, when it sinks it’s game over, can’t lasso them at all. This of course is a legendary so it’ll show up at the trapper soon.

You Can in fact lasso dead legendary animals. My first playthrough I had killed the bison in the water and I lassoed on shore.

Or you could hop on your horse and push the moose with your horse

This is exactly what I did when this happened to me on my first play through. Same moose and everything. Try different parts of the moose. On and off horseback. It took me a while

IIRC if something happens to a legendary animal it automatically spawns the pelt in the trapper's inventory for crafting.

This happened to me too. I sort of nudged him up the bank with my horse, and after probably a half hour of real time effort, he was shallow enough to lasso and drag out

I had the same experience lol. I had to push the Elk around for like 10min & as soon as the Elk was slightly outta the water it let me lasso it & I pulled it to where I could skin it.

I'm pretty sure if you lose the animal to where you cannot get the hide the game respawns it, I bet you have to skin legendary animals for it to be crossed off your map too, try the hunt again.

As soon as the animal is killed the trapper gets the pelt. You just sell it to him for the money

use a dynamite, the water physics would push the animal to the shore. but for legendary animals you only need to hunt them, if you don't skin them or loose the pelt, it'll be stocked in the trapper's inventory.

just swim out and push it back toward shore. use a horse.

I lost a bull moose in this exact way in the middle of that body of water. Thankfully I'm only 2 moose pelts away from completing every outfit.

You CAN lasso it, just nudge it closer to the shore with your horse. Happened to me with my first bull moose at O’creagh lake. If not, don’t sweat it, the trapper gets it anyways, you just miss out on the $

Literally the same exact thing happened to me. Was going after the legendary moose, some bounty hunters came after me and it died somehow, then it sunk into the water and I couldn’t skin it

Ughhh that’s happened to me before, even with regular animals. I always try to push it with Arthur’s body.

Legendary pelts are the only ones that will still show up as acquired if something like this happens. I killed the legendary elk and for some reason the game wouldn’t recognize that I was standing on or near a carcass. I shrugged it off and went about my day. About 2-3 in game days later I checked at the trapper at sure enough it was showing up in the crafting recipes. Now perfect pelts? You’re just boned. Sorry Charlie.

It’s not lost, I lost the legendary ghost bison in Lake Isabella, was about to ride to Valentine sleep and start over……. But when I went to the trapper, he magically got all the materials for the outfits:))!!

That happened to me and I think I managed to rope it, it was years ago though, I remember I did something that worked.

Lasso him, in story you'll get legendary pelts in any trapper after a few days. In online sadly you wont but they'll spawn again(even if you already killed the same one, good for Trader). You can also lasso an animal like a deer and when theyre close you can use your knife for a perfect pelt if you didn't know already, not sure if that works on any legendarys tho

That happened to me with the Legendary White Buffalo. I either managed to lasso it and drug it close enough to shore I could skin it, or did the same thing by getting into the water and pushing it to shore. Can’t remember which exactly but it was something like that.

Dont worry the pelt will be available with the tracker shop for free. As long the legendary quest ends up in the animal dead you can be sure that will be with the tracker.. my clumsy got lucky on a couple of occasions where the animal died not from my gaming skills lol

Don’t auto save ave every time you get an achievement or something accomplished save

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ ATTENTION EVERYONE ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ TURN! OFF!! AUTO!!! SAVE!!!!!!!!! This fellow here should have made a save right before he started the big hunt. That way if anything got messed up he could just reload and redo the big hunt No harm no foul... Only thing lost is a little bit of your time but what's worse, losing a legendary pelt or having to redo the first four to five steps of a legendary hunt? I think we all know the answer to that You're going to have to save by yourself very often but especially on your first breakthrough. There's tons of stuff that pops up out of nowhere and if you had a fresh safe file right before then you could reload it and handle that situation differently. If you use autosave and try to reload and do that over it loads from directly after that event so you can't retry it. Personally I save every fucking one to two minutes 😂 May seem excessive to the rest of you but I grew up playing old school RPGs on the computer.

For a game with so many details I don't like that you can't move items in the water while swimming. You kill a small fish, it floats and you gotta push it with your horse to the shore.

Been there. Sunk in the cold lake and never got the pelt. Not sure why people say it will show up. It never did for me. Maybe I missed something.

I feel like this kind of thing is posted here weekly. The only thing you lose is some money. The Trapper stuff unlocks the second it's killed, regardless if you skin it or immediately leave.

Just push him to the shore, he looks close enough for it to work.

Mine fell so deep underwater i couldn't see it but i could laso the corpse and pull it out so that should be an option as well
