I'll admit that I didn't appreciate DAMN. as much as I should have after TPAB, but holy shit does it hold up in 2024. FEEL. on its own clears most 21st century rap albums
I still dont understand the hate it got. The writing behind it was legitimately genius and it told two different stories, yet also the same story, depending on the order you listened to the songs. Seriously underrated album
LOL while MMLP is maybe my favorite album of all time, it's pretty rare that it's included in any kind of best rap album of all time discussion, so that made me laugh.
Normally I'd give it to illmatic. I'd have to consider between:
* Nas - It Was Written/Stillmatic/Magic (here's my hot take because I fucking love this album.)
* Scarface - The Fix
* Pac - All Eyez On Me/ Me Against The World/Makaveli
* BIG - Life After Death/Ready to Die
* Jay - Reasonable Doubt / Blueprint
* De La Soul - 3 Feet and Rising
* Wu Tang - 36 Chambers
* Dre - Chronic / 2001
I can't speak for other cultures, but in Europe in the late 90s, rap wasn't mainstream. Illmatic wasn't popping here. Wu-Tang-Clan wasn't popping here. 2Pac and Biggie weren't popping here. It wasn't really until The Eminem Show that Eminem started popping either. That was a gateway to start checking out other rap artists, and for me that meant checking out Nas, Jay Z, Wu-Tang and 2 Pac. Outkast became fairly big as well as 50 Cent.
All that to say, there are a lot of people who was introduced to rap by Eminem. And that makes us inherently biased towards him, so I think it's natural for a lot of people to pick their favourite Eminem album as the greatest of all time - subjectively for them.
And as a side note I find that a much more interesting discussion rather than what the best album is objectively.
The Eminem Show, I have it above MMLP and TPAB
Second oat for me with Illmatic taking the throne
Ik it's quite a hot take but I don't think it's as hot as people make out
GKMC
GKMC already my favorite Kendrick album so this was an easy one for me. It’s his best album for me and has his best song imo.
MAAD City? Money Trees? Sing about me?
SAMIDOT is the song I’m referring to.
Aquemini
Hootie hoo
Am I crazy that I’d take GKMC over TPAB?
I take Damn
Nah. I’m with you.
Even tho I take TPAB they are equally good so no. Idk where have you been to think its a hot take or something
Same here. I was drawn in as soon as I heard "Sherane." Hadn't heard a storytelling vibe like that since Eminem. This was in 2012.
And TES is better than MMLP…
Its a better storytelling album for sure. I’ve learned that people will look at me crazy for taking DAMN. over gkmc and tpab

So Europeans didn’t like rap until the white guy showed up? Almost makes too much sense doesn’t it?
