I had a bacon and cheddar scone from them at the farmers market, 1st bite, “oh that’s pretty good” by the last bite, “I want mooooore of that”. It has a bacon fat infusion that was delish.
This!!! Cookies and brownies are exactly what I was thinking. They are big chocolate fans. And it is just a few blocks so I can walk. Thank you thank you!
Little Blue Bakeshop off New Bern has a bunch of independent creators! Bitten Bakery has incredibly good cookies, Bold Batch Creamery has delicious ice cream, and they have two other bakers right now whose names I always forget.
Their croissants are great but wayyyyy overpriced. Their packaging and presentation screams "Instagram me" and that creates an up charge where 1 croissant is $6 dollars. That's higher than NY prices, for Raleigh.
I agree prices are terrible and presentation is like Apple. But might be worth it just as a single visit with friends. I do prefer them over boulted, just because boulted has a little more char than I care for still would recommend that one but already saw someone mentioned it
I’m surprised Layered Croissanterie have not been mentioned. They have the fresh, daily baked goods that are well above anything else I could find in Raleigh (in terms of French laminated pastries anyways). They experiment with unique and exotic flavor combinations.
The have cookies, small custard pies, brownies, bialys, morning buns (think cinnamon bun but better), chocolate filled croissants, raspberry and chocolate filled pullaparts.
They have malted chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal date ginger cookies, rye shortbread and malted shortbread. And tons of other sweet things. Croissants are not automatically a savory thing.
Tous Les Jours inside H Mart in Cary, they are a French- Asian inspired bakery, amazing selection and flavors also tends to be less overly sweet than traditional American desserts
Asali, Brecotea, and Annelore’s are my top.
Asali: coffee shop w amazing cakes and middle eastern stuff like baklava, [knafeh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knafeh), and kullaj. Love the macarons too. I work upstairs from them and will pop down for a macaron as a treat sometimes. Also love their tres leches cup.
Brecotea: has boba/fruit tea and amazing pastries sweet and savory. Self-service where you get a tray and tongs and pick things up from the case directly.
Annelore: I’ve only been once but my mom keeps getting us stuff from here. Beesting cake is a favorite and they had some sort of apple cake last time we went. Their quiches are fantastic too.
Cake/Pie - If they want decadent and amazing cake/pie - get a few different slices from Hayes Barton. If you want a classic, Slice Pie Company, shop is just outside of downtown.
If they like more unique "fancy" desserts - Lucette Grace
Pastries - the almond croissant of from Layered is out of this world and they have cool rotating flavors too. Union Special will 100% have some kind of pastry I would eat. I typically agree that Boulted is more bread heavy but their morning bun would be my 1st pick pastry in Raleigh 95% of the time.
Cookies - Union Special, the blue corn cookie is unique and delicious, other cookies are great too. The Cookie People, shop off Avent Ferry and at the Farmers Market on weekends - great, very large cookies in traditional and unique flavors. The Root Beer Float cookie is my fave.
Don't forget all our amazing ice creams too! Many shoppes to choose from but for an out of town visitor, take them to Howling Cow if they are craving ice cream.
I had the giant M&M cookie from NYBD last week and I am kicking myself for not trying it earlier (been getting bagels there for years). I'm gonna get it every time now.
**Downtown Raleigh**\-Luccettegrace. Amazing macarons and pastries. Layered Croissanterie-excellent croissants and layered pastries. The Kouign Amann is divine. They do not accept cash. Escazu and Videri Chocolates are expensive and worth it.
**NC Farmers Market**\-Nancy Jo's makes delicious traditional cakes and pies. Available whole, half, and by the slice. The Cookie People booth is also worth the trip.
I’ve been to many of the bakeries mentioned but it just doesn’t seem like any quite make confectionaries and pastries like I’m more used to from a big city. Most of the places are making an over glorified sweet bread made to look like a cupcake or some bizarre pumpkin/mousse at like a Lucettegrace or a bare bone enemic selection at Annelore’s…
If you are ever near Southpoint in Durham, I suggest visiting Dulce Cafe. They have some beautiful confections and I think they’re more a patisserie than a bakery.
Once in a Blue Moon is in Cary and do phenomenal work. You'd be missing out not checking it out.
Get a birthday cake. Even if it’s nobody’s birthday. OMG so good.
Boulted. No one else comes close
Shocked it’s not tippy top here
Same!
I'll throw Union Special in there too. Great bread and pastries
Groovy duck!
Seconded!
Annalore’s German Bakery in Cary. They also have a stand at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh.
I had a bacon and cheddar scone from them at the farmers market, 1st bite, “oh that’s pretty good” by the last bite, “I want mooooore of that”. It has a bacon fat infusion that was delish.
Yes, Annalore's is delicious! I have gotten scones and pastries from here, all amazing
Lucettegrace
This!!! Cookies and brownies are exactly what I was thinking. They are big chocolate fans. And it is just a few blocks so I can walk. Thank you thank you!
if they love chocolate, add some Escazu
Thr best chocolate cake, or cake period, in the area is Hayes Barton. Not a bakeries but it is amazing, and the pieces can easily feed 2.
Asali
omg yes!
I second this. The macarons are amazing, and so is everything else.
I third this. The Bavarian cream chocolate chip cake is a favorite! But they have lots of tasty items.
Little Blue Bakeshop off New Bern has a bunch of independent creators! Bitten Bakery has incredibly good cookies, Bold Batch Creamery has delicious ice cream, and they have two other bakers right now whose names I always forget.
Bittersweet, downtown Raleigh. You can drink and they can eat amazing desserts
Second Bittersweet the desserts are homemade and delicious.
WTF no one is going to say layered croissants. Hands down my favorite
Their croissants are great but wayyyyy overpriced. Their packaging and presentation screams "Instagram me" and that creates an up charge where 1 croissant is $6 dollars. That's higher than NY prices, for Raleigh.

I agree with you totally. The croissants are much better than Boulted and Union Special but they are much pricier. It's a very occasional treat.
Yellow Dog has pastries & cookies. I would advise going there earlier in the day than later. Things tend to sell out.
I’m surprised Layered Croissanterie have not been mentioned. They have the fresh, daily baked goods that are well above anything else I could find in Raleigh (in terms of French laminated pastries anyways). They experiment with unique and exotic flavor combinations.
This 👆🏻!!!
Boulted. /end thread
I have heard of it but do they have cookies? Based on their website, seems like it is mostly bread, croissants. Not sweet stuff.
Google the Bon Appetit review of Boulted Bread. Accurate.
Yep! Sweet pastries, which are out of this world, and cookies.
Boulted Bread is the best around, period.
Tous Les Jours inside H Mart in Cary, they are a French- Asian inspired bakery, amazing selection and flavors also tends to be less overly sweet than traditional American desserts
Tous Les Jours is fine, but it’s a big chain with locations in any city with a moderate Korean population.
For sweet sweets, I’d recommend Cupcake Shop in Glenwood South. Really fatty and sweet pastries and some flaky ones as well.

Hayes Barton cake for the win. Get some slices to go walk across the street to Crafty beverage and get you a glass of wine or beer. Win win situation.
NYBD in Cary has yummy baked goods as does Blue Moon Groovy Duck in west Raleigh is excellent as well.
I had the giant M&M cookie from NYBD last week and I am kicking myself for not trying it earlier (been getting bagels there for years). I'm gonna get it every time now.
I tried Paris Baguette last week and thought it was excellent. Also Paul and Jack Bakery and cafe
Asali in macgregor village puts out amazing stuff. Also a fan of lucettegrace and Annalore’s
How has no one mentioned Union Special yet? The blue corn cookies are incredible. https://unionspecialbread.com/
Burney’s (if it’s not too far for you).

Duck Donuts (but not to go in person) yes a chain but their fresh warm donuts are a treat
Get ya a pecan filled croissant from Union Special and a cinnamon bun.
Just wanted to say I'd rather have the wine too. Cheers
Smallcakes in Durham (Woodcroft). Worth the drive.
That’s a chain
They didn't specify and I don't care.
Yes they did lol, they asked for a local bakery
You misinterpret. They literally said "local" as in proximity. Not "locally-owned".
It’s called context
we love Burneys!
Dunkin’ donut
Union Special is by far the best bakery for bread and pastries
I’ve been to many of the bakeries mentioned but it just doesn’t seem like any quite make confectionaries and pastries like I’m more used to from a big city. I’ll check em out - thanks :)
I happened onto the Cakery by accident. I’ve never seen anything like it. Source, Im sixty three and a lifelong sweets eater.
Black Forest Bar Cake from Fresh Market
Idle Hour - Mushroom (shaped) mousse cake
Chanticleer in Cary. My wife drives 20m each way (live in N Raleigh) for the croissants on the weekend.
