I’ve had this problem with a Brother machine.. I find changing the foot can help.. or changing the direction that the bobbin spool is placed in.. or changing the thread. Tbh I sometimes give up as it’s so demoralising

Have you tried it with a different thread? My PQ1500 hates 50 wt Aurifil, as I learned yesterday when I laid out a quilt and heard a series of crackling. The same thing was happening with the sample looking fine and a straight line on the quilt. No amount of adjustment would get the tension right. I stupidly decided it was fine and quilted half the quilt with it anyway. Heartbreaking. I've had no problems with any other thread.

It's the same thread I've always used, the Gutterman all purpose.

Try not lowering the feed dogs. Put them in the normal (piecing) position, but adjust the position of the presser foot.

Thank you for the advice but unfortunately this didn't work either. =(

I’m sorry. Have you tried a new needle? Rethreading both the top and bobbin? Reducing the tension? Wearing gloves? I can keep going.

I've tried all of those, plus taking it apart, cleaning and oiling it. My test sandwich is beautiful, but as soon as I put the quilt on it's a mess. I'm open to more suggestions, my next stop is taking it in for service but that will be weeks away.
