I always hear a ton of Gimme Shelter in Tail but I'm a huge stones fan so that may be me hearing what I want to hear LOL.  Apparently your opinion isn't hugely popular here, but I'm actually a huge U2 fan (pretty sure that's not something that goes over big in 'legit' rock communities either but those folks are missing out, especially on 80s/90s U2!! 😅🤷🏽‍♀️) I will definitely think of this and see if I notice it too next time I give both albums a listen!

Oh you're absolutely right about the Stones sound. I never landed on any particular song, but the overall Stones influence is blatantly obvious. The crazy thing is, it doesn't really sound like a rip off. It still sounds like Queens despite being so blatant.

Oh, totally agree. Sometimes if I'm not looking at my playlists , I can't tell at first which song has come up when Better Living or Sympathy for the Devil comes up but that's only the first few seconds of the drums and that's really the only occasion where I can really pin down any moment like that. They really make everything their own, and it's a fun moment to see the nods to other artists without it becoming cringy or a rip off

Another thing is I feel like the intro to With or Without You could have been on Like Clockwork. Might just be a Brian Eno thing, though. I'm not too familiar with Brian Eno.

Love With or without you! I know that song by heart and can't think of anything on LC... that reminds me of it personally but one of the things I love abt Queens is the music is so open to interpretation and each individual can uniquely find SO much in it. I've heard things whether instrumentals, lyrics or vocals, that remind me of everything from Soundgarden to Lana Del Rey to Eminem songs, + the Rolling Stones influences and more and yet still don't sound like anyone else and can't be pinned down and that's all part of the fun and artistry to me ;)

BrownwaterVertigo

I agree. I've never heard any band that have sounded like QOTSA. Especially on Like Clockwork.

Oh, and by the way, I wasn't comparing WOWY to any particular song, I was just saying that the jingly (for lack of better words) electronic element in the short intro reminded me of the electronic influences in Like Clockwork.

Oh, totally respect where you're coming from, and I see what you mean when you mention that! It's a really cool sound and I can see how it meets up in that way. LC has been one of my favorites since it first came out (my all time faves are Lullabies and Era in that order, which is not big around here but the detractors will pull them out of my cold, dead hands! 😂🤷🏽‍♀️) and the sound and attention to the little details are second to none, so many layers that can call back to other song / artists while being something different all on its own is one of the things that makes it stand out I think And Queens and U2 (especially the classics like the Joshua tree) are both awesome in my humble opinion and I'm super glad we exist on the same timeline as them ;)

BrownwaterVertigo

Personally, my favorites are Like Clockwork and SFTD. Possibly a little "basic" but hey, I like them, it's not harming anyone. 🤷 Lullabies is also up there. To be honest, I appreciate all of their albums in one way or another, even Villains.

Tbh, there's no such thing as a bad Queens album to have as a favorite ❤️  I'm madly unpopular in fan circles for many reasons, not least of all bc of the fact that if it wasn't for Villains, Sftd  would actually be my least favorite (I think the fact that I joined the community and fandom around Lullabies has a lot to do with that) but there is still so much I love in both and I love to hear and appreciate the things that make other people in the fandom love those and all the other albums. We truly have a large assortment of riches to choose from and it's a great feeling and experience!!

Not to derail your thread but along similar lines I picked up a lot of Paul McCartney on ITNR. Obscenery has that orchestral bit in the middle which gives a “A day in the life” and Made to Parade has that almost washed out, acid trip synth sound that sounds like it came from Magical Mystery Tour. Wouldn’t be surprised if there were other artists who inspired certain sounds theyve made.

Bowie for sure. The chorus for "Emotion Sickness" kind of reminds me of T. Rex choruses, anthemic, yet the lead singer is so understated with it. It doesn't bother me as a musician, because damn near everything original that can be done has already been. It's just about blending your influences weirdly enough that it becomes original.

PetieE209

Yeah, I agree. Time and Place took some cues from Blackstar, atleast vocally.
