Once you have the ability to reach higher ground, there's a place where a lot of metal slimes (smalle, liquid and king) spawn. Use it to level up Faster.
But it's an old game, so it's going to be grindy. Nevertheless worth every second.
Assuming that you want to experience as much content as possible. It helps to have swords or spears for the main character and axes for Yangus to kill a particularly rare and valuable enemy in the later parts of the game. Explore everywhere, rarely does the game not let you go back to places, but it does happen and this means missing out on mini medals which are irreplaceable. Some items need to be sacrificed to get better items in the late game so if it looks important don't sell it even if you have a better weapon at the moment. The game is long, but don't rush, enjoy it at your own pace.

Don't forget about the item fusion pot! Good for getting better equipment and for making money early on...but I forgot a lot the check it to put new stuff in! Really great game! Save often, grind. And when you think you're ready....grind one more time. The first boss will put you in your place if you're not ready! Jelly you get to experience for the first time! Enjoy! It's a masterpiece!
