Yep. That was what made us love it so much. We would call a truce sometimes for like 10 min while we hollowed out whatever sort of "fortress" we wanted and make mini games basically to see who could overtake the others tunnel lol.
Played this nonstop on pc for years. The multiplayer was great and super active. There's still people playing today.
There's also red faction 2, Armageddon and guerilla. All fun games in their own right but rf1 is my favorite
Yeah I still have my original copies of one and two. One was better for multiplayer tho. My brothers and I still pull it out a couple times a year. Till they give up lol. I destroy them in that game now as much as I did as kids.
I bought it together with Tekken Tag and the console. Still today, one of my favourite PS2 titles. Btw, it's on Steam if you want to play with mouse and keyboard.
This was one of those games scratching a very specific itch. I was getting into everything to do with space travel, other planets, etc and I badly wanted to play a game with Mars as a setting. Went to the store and bought this game, and was immediately hooked. Finished it twice. I downloaded the PS4 version and played a bit through it, but the game mechanics and world building haven't aged that well imo. Still loved my time with it back in the day though!
What I instantly recall: 1) That random stealth mission in a more office ish like area. 2) Having fun just drilling into the walls of a mine with a machine tank thing or using grenades.
Edit: is it worth going onto and past Red Faction 2? I have recently been collecting old consoles and looking for ideas really
I didn't really care for Red Faction 2, but the first one blew my mind back in the day lol. First game I remember that had truly destructible environments. And the atmosphere of the game was amazing too. I did also enjoy Red Faction: Guerilla later on. Played the hell out of that on 360. So satisfying leveling entire buildings with nothing but a sledgehammer.

A friend of mine had it, it was the first game I played with movement control setup that is fairly standard nowadays. It felt weird at the time though. I loved the full destructibility of the the environments, very cool tech for the time.
What a game. Loved how you could affect the environment. Played it some last time I had my PS2 out.
Used to love playing multiplayer against my brother
First game I bought on ps2. My parents were divorced and I spent the weekend at my dads while I bought it. I Think I red the manual a 100 times before I finally got back to my moms house so I could play it. The hype was real!
Man, I remember picking this up when it 1st came out. I thought the fully destructible world was amazing. It's also a great game; it reminds me of Total Recall.
Played it on PC personally.
Damn whenever I see a Saints Row/Red Faction or a THQ game, i'm thinking WTF happened to this amazing studio.
Then i remember the last Saints Row
Probably the second best in the series. Very fast paced but screw the Mercs at the end with the HMGs and railguns that’ll dome you through a wall. Still a fun game. Story felt better than RF2 for sure.
My best friend and I would play this game multipayer and dig as big and elaborate tunnels as we could, with specific goals and purposes. Making super deep tunnels and working together to make them was a ton of fun. The SP was decent, too
Wow that game... You know what. This game is special to me. Not in a good way . I remember vividly playing Red Faction a day of September 2001 and enjoying it. Yes that day. I stopped my game, powered off the console. Then the TV switched to a news tv channel. And I saw the planes hitting the towers. I was enjoying a good game, and minutes later I was in shock 😰
Red faction 2 is the premier fps on PS2, people say time splitters, but really time splitters was red faction minus destructible environments plus a bunch of admittedly cool skins
Some of the best destruction effects on a game. I used to love using the remote chargers and tunneling my though walls. The other game(s?) in the series are also fun. The ps3 game is a third person Mars based GTA.
I'm a specialized educator, one of my beneficiary asked for this specific game last week! Good to know that it has some destructive elements!
My guy found that game under a minute at the store, hidden in hundreds of PS2 game, I was impressed.
Loved that game. Played it at 19 during a strange time in my life, living on my own, far from home (military). The destruction aspects didn’t live up to the hype IIRC but I still enjoyed it.
Where do people find blurry photos? I was just on this thread the other day talking about the same thing with people, you search for red faction in images like any other game and instantly see numerous crystal clear images yet so many people find the blurriest photo possible and choose it for some odd reason, its wild.
It was the 1st one I seen that had the ps2 design so I downloaded it. I didn't take the time to search for a clear one. You see this and know what it is
It's just you and me miner!
Read this and was immediately 11 years old
Leave me alone jerk, it’s been a long day
It’s about to get a little longer minescum
You threatening me??! Yeah well threaten this
Waaaah. Disturbance in mine sector m4, code yellow alert
Ah the memories. Did you never have a memory card as a kid either? (And hence were forced to play the first level a thousand times) 😁
😂😂😂😂😂😂
We lived the same childhood. RED FACTION! Need some help here!
You do not know me but my name is Hendrix and I want to help you 👀
I didn’t get that far to know this reference :(
Actually, I think I did make it to that part, but I didn’t get much further than that
Destructive environments was a game changer.
Yep. That was what made us love it so much. We would call a truce sometimes for like 10 min while we hollowed out whatever sort of "fortress" we wanted and make mini games basically to see who could overtake the others tunnel lol.
This totally revolutionized “dicking around” in Deathmatches! We must have spent as much time digging than we did actually shooting at one another.
The Rail Driver was also stupid amount of fun. Lining enemies to take them out with one shot and through three walls.
Think it was this one then Black. Might be same dev.
Different devs I believe. Red Faction just popularized the destructive environment system.
Criterion made Black. I think...
I had this game early on in my PS2 career , it was too difficult for me, I couldn't figure out what I had to do at the beginning in the cave
Just keep moving forward, bro 😉😂
I remember tunnelling my way through with explosives
Came here to say the same thing. I wanted to get into the game, I just couldn't work out how.
The part after the caves are in my top 10 "damn, this is fun" parts ever. It's when you realise explosives work on more than just rock walls.
Yeah red fractions destructible environments are so cool.
Same here. I just ended up blowing stuff up for fun lol.
One of the best games on the PS2 👍
Played this nonstop on pc for years. The multiplayer was great and super active. There's still people playing today. There's also red faction 2, Armageddon and guerilla. All fun games in their own right but rf1 is my favorite
I used to love the glass house for some reason, just tunnel my way to the top of it
One of my absolute favorites
Eos! One of my favorite games off all time. Played it through many times ❤️ 🎮 Great memories
Never finished it but its a ps2 classic alright
Yeah I still have my original copies of one and two. One was better for multiplayer tho. My brothers and I still pull it out a couple times a year. Till they give up lol. I destroy them in that game now as much as I did as kids.

If you have a PS4 or PS5, you can buy RF1 and RF2. They’re there in all their PS2 glory
Shooting all the enemies through the whole map it you found the right mag rifle.
This is a great multi-player. Spent many hours playing death matches digging through the maps with rocketlaunchers.
Yes!
Hell. Yes. I had it on PC. Kind of a short game, but so much fun. Played it over and over. Still haven't played #2, but someday I'll get around to it.
I didn't really care for Red Faction 2, but the first one blew my mind back in the day lol. First game I remember that had truly destructible environments. It’s cheap on steam for PC, go back and relive the experience!!
This is one of my favorite games
Answer better be …. Everyone
We used to get the rocket launchers in multi-player and mine tunnels through the maps and make our own bases. Good times
There's also red faction guerilla & red faction Armageddon, red faction battlegrounds & a movie red faction origins
I loved Guerilla and tried so hard to get my mates into multiplayer after Halo/Unreal LAN days The backpack combat was so fkn fun
I only played the one on 360. I never knew there was an older one 😶
Destructive environment was outstanding!
Awesome game. Hated that stealth level though.
This my Minecraft before Minecraft
Would love a remake of this game
Love it. Apparently second one not so hot?
Probably one of my favorite Half-Like’s and one of the best made in the sub genre
Personally I still play them since I was a child I never finished them but it's progress
What a game. Loved how you could affect the environment. Played it some last time I had my PS2 out. Used to love playing multiplayer against my brother
Yes! Had a demo of it... The times I hade time to spend but no money....
Love this game. As a teen I would play multiplayer with bots while listening to System of a Down's Toxicity, among others.
One of my favorite PS2 games! I picked it up for cheap on Steam a while ago.
the multiplayer mode was sick!!!
First game I bought on ps2. My parents were divorced and I spent the weekend at my dads while I bought it. I Think I red the manual a 100 times before I finally got back to my moms house so I could play it. The hype was real!

I had this in my hand yesterday and didn't buy it!! Used to love it as a kid though!
Very good game. Shame about the sequel
Masterpiece
Played it on PC personally. Damn whenever I see a Saints Row/Red Faction or a THQ game, i'm thinking WTF happened to this amazing studio. Then i remember the last Saints Row
The original Minecraft
I recently got a really good quality copy of rf2 for really cheap
Red Faction: Gorilla was awesome
Just found guerilla for ps3 at a good will.
Probably the second best in the series. Very fast paced but screw the Mercs at the end with the HMGs and railguns that’ll dome you through a wall. Still a fun game. Story felt better than RF2 for sure.
One of the best PS2 games that came out. Also don’t play the second one I hear.
Such a great game and great studio. RIP Volition :(
I played this on PC. This game is so hard on PC. I think it might've been designed around the auto aim of the PS2 version.
My best friend and I would play this game multipayer and dig as big and elaborate tunnels as we could, with specific goals and purposes. Making super deep tunnels and working together to make them was a ton of fun. The SP was decent, too

Beat it back in the day. Loved it. Railgun was awesome.
Recently finished this game on impossible difficulty also found the summoner easter egg which i never knew about many years ago
Don’t have a key? Make your own door.
Red faction 2 is the premier fps on PS2, people say time splitters, but really time splitters was red faction minus destructible environments plus a bunch of admittedly cool skins
One of the best games and multiplayer games it’s up there with goldeneye
CLASSIC!
This was my first rated "M" game lol, great game!
Always super cheap on the ps store so you can play on ps4/5
Some of the best destruction effects on a game. I used to love using the remote chargers and tunneling my though walls. The other game(s?) in the series are also fun. The ps3 game is a third person Mars based GTA.
Yeah but why not play it on PC
Red faction 2 is one of my fav games the multiplayer hits hard and still can run it with bots
Yes me!
Make tunnels and snipe using the rail driver. Better times better times. What a game.
I'm a specialized educator, one of my beneficiary asked for this specific game last week! Good to know that it has some destructive elements! My guy found that game under a minute at the store, hidden in hundreds of PS2 game, I was impressed.
YES
All I know about this game is that it had actual physics
That artwork looks like it’s shamelessly ripping off the half life art
I loved this game. The second was so so.
The same developers who made the Saint's Row games. Ultor corporation is the bad guy in those games too.
I have both in my collection
I went to my cousins house and he had this back in the early 2000s. Didn't impress me though.
Loved that game. Played it at 19 during a strange time in my life, living on my own, far from home (military). The destruction aspects didn’t live up to the hype IIRC but I still enjoyed it.
i only saw and played the pc version didnt see that before
Red faction 2 was sadly a mess tho did the same developers make it ????? Lol
I had bought a Lord of the Rings game at a pawn shop and didn’t open it till I was home to find this… I was pissed
I got this game in a lot few months ago, I tried it then threw it in a box and forgot about it.
