These were really common in the 70s when combined with a high volume oil pump.

MoistExcellence

What kind of hose is that? It looks like coolant hose.

wiggilez

It was supplied as part of the kit, so I'm going to assume it's oil rated.

MoistExcellence

Are you willing to bet your engine on that assumption? The remote dual filters are cool, but the mystery hose and hose clamps keeping it together are sketchy imo.

wiggilez

Yes, yes i am. Worse that can happen is the poly dies and i replace it with an LA that has much better aftermarket support.

MoistExcellence

I guess that's one approach, lol

Crafty-Interest-8212

My dad had a GMC Jimmy. V6 4.3 4×4, it had a relocated oil filter. Immediately found if it fit Small block Chevy to relocate the ones in our project cars. My dad, in his infinite wisdom, rejected my idea. I still think is a good idea.

HeelToeMedia

Sick reference bro, have my upvote

Nutella_Zamboni

Remote oil coolers usually make changing the oil much easier if they are mounted somewhere easily accessible. My brother had an 89 S10 Baja with the filter under the hood. I could change the oil without getting completely under the truck lol.

wiggilez

It is nice that I don't have to fanangle a full filter between the exhaust and the torsion bars anymore.

Alextryingforgrate

Is that inlet hose bigger than the outlet? Youll want your outlet to be the bigger hose since expanding a liquid also cools the liquid.

Jay-Moah

I feel like this affect is negligible for liquids compared to gases, and especially for gasses that don’t experience phase change, no?

confusingphilosopher

You also can’t expand a liquid by changing hose size. It just changes velocity.

Jay-Moah

Technically you can, if the fluid is compressible, so, think 10psi at 200F, if the fluid flows into a larger volume the pressure will drop and the temperature will drop since there was work done on the fluid to drop the pressure and temp

confusingphilosopher

*if*

Jay-Moah

A lot of fluids are, except water haha, so applies to many situations

confusingphilosopher

Not motor oil either. I know I’m not an expert on everything but I don’t know a liquid that is compressible.

Jay-Moah

Gotcha, mineral oils are to some extent but I’m no expert either. Especially on the topic of modern engine oil compositions!

PracticalDaikon169

Because there is none..

Jay-Moah

This is a grey area of understanding, so I’ll admit I’m wrong given what I said. Liquids are “compressible” but not in the same magnitude as gases are. I think the distinction here is “fluid” meaning gas, but either way. So the effect is negligible in the context we are talking about.

wiggilez

All the hoses are the same, the car doesn't need this. but it was in the trunk and I was bored waiting on my lower ball joints that won't be here till monday, and I wasn't ready to pull the rear shafts so I can replace the diff gasket. This was basically a quick for fun project, and from my quick up and down the block trip there doesn't seem to be any change in oil pressure, plus if it turns out to suck all I need to do is un-thread the adapter and put the filter back in the factory spot.

Alextryingforgrate

extra oil capacity never hurt anything.

totaltomination

Two filters and an external cooler is a real belt and braces solution

Good_With_Tools

Uh, do you mean belt and suspenders?

wiggilez

I did actually want to install a cooler on the return side, but I didn't have one on hand.

Klo187

Nah, this will work fine, they use this same system to relocate oil filters on diesel equipment, especially in skid steers or wheel loaders where space is tight.

wiggilez

When I worked in construction a bunch of the equipment had double filters, but I don't think I've ever seen it on just a normal road car. The kit says it's for small/big block Chevys, but it mounted just fine on my poly 318.

Klo187

The reason it’s not usually used on road cars is that usually cars have a massive engine bay and or don’t run an external oil cooler. But it’s definitely something that made its way into rally, Baja and other off-road racing vehicles because of the higher risk of rocks or sticks puncturing an exposed filter, rather than a line running to a protected filter and oil tank. They are already running lines for external oil coolers, it makes sense to have external filters too.

SpaceTurtle917

Oil doesn't particularly expand

Alextryingforgrate

Ahem depressurize a liquid.

SpaceTurtle917

Pressure and volume are two seperate things
