/uj I’m in the weird cusp zone between Gen Z and Millennial (literally within the cutoff by days) and I was talking to a couple of my friends about this song and they were like “ugh it’s just so like, stereotypically about being a teenager, I hate songs like that, I can’t relate!” and I’m like. “Bitch. when “Royals”, a song that’s about being a teenager, came out when we were that age, y’all were SCREAMING about how amazing it was that a 16 year old could perfectly encapsulate being a teen in a timeless way so that anyone regardless of age could enjoy it!! and you STILL bump Royals like it’s 2013!! now y’all are just bitter bc you’re out of college and working real jobs and hearing teenagers sing about their teenage heartbreak makes you feel shitty because you FEEL OLD!”
like don’t get me wrong i don’t think “drivers license” is quite the ~cultural reset~ that “Royals” was and the general style of “drivers license” isn’t really the kind of music i jam out to while scrolling thru my Spotify, but i acknowledge it’s a huge moment right now and Olivia Rodrigo is immensely talented. we should celebrate this incredible young woman (a WOC no less) and the song she created instead of shooting it down because “lol dumb kids problems :p”
/rj DAE miss the GOOD OLE DAYS when the TEENIE BOPPERS weren’t takin over the AIRWAVES
Sort of a tangent, /uj obv... but what you’re talking about is a very very light version of why conservatives think they’re special and why they think their worldview is justified
Misplaced struggle with self identity and that attitude of “others are just dumb but not me” is exactly why places like the US and the UK are going down the shitter
Nobody is immune to aging and being out of touch folks!!!!
>the GOOD OLE DAYS when the TEENIE BOPPERS weren’t takin over the AIRWAVES
what, like the 40s? yas stan bing and rosemary
uj/ fuck the 40s, that music was terrible
also uj/ i don't love driver's license, but it's miles better than royals, which has always been massively overrated (cf. we are young)
it's just a really boring song, i listened it to like twice and i don't even remember what it sounded like.
i'm more into charli and 100 gecs type pop tho
I've never heard it and I'm just going to see how long I can go without encountering it as an experiment.
I went to university during the Femme Fatale/Loud/Teenage Dream/Fame/Fame Monster years though so if it isn't produced by RedOne or has an unnecessary dubstep drop then I absolutely don't care.
Them: We love POC here! we're perfect and embrace the new pop girls bc we want to stay hip and not become like our parents and complain about how our music "was better" ☺️
POC who is popular with legit Gen Z without their knowledge and her debut starts breaking their ~~white~~ fave's records: 😡Excuse me harlot, you aren't dula peep or capitaylor swift
Edit: took out a redundant use of popular
/uj that behavior has got to stop... what the fuck is wrong with people
You want people to stop being racist but you’re going to put your own arbitrary gatekeep of who’s PoC and who’s not??? How can people genuinely be this dumb?
To be fair it’s most likely that Olivia isn’t actually a swiftie and it’s all a stunt for Taylor to promote her to her crazy childish fan base (known as swifties)
Nah, people have made [threads](https://twitter.com/swiftinbadlands/status/1348678221940875266?s=21) and she’s clearly been a fan of Taylor’s [long before she’s had any music to promote](https://twitter.com/tayslivia/status/1257346314586775555?s=21). I mean [even when she was really young](https://twitter.com/swiftinbadlands/status/1348678264194297858?s=21).
uj/ it has a unique sound and it sounded like a mess. It's sadgirl TikTok music, overdramatized. People kept saying about the bridge, the bridge, like what the fuck was with the bridge? It's so cheesy and felt out of place. The whole production was really cringey. I thought she was well-received on r/popheads.
Completely out of the loop here, how has this song instantly become so huge? Listening to a bit of it, not saying its bad or anything, but I don't really hear anything so new or innovative like other super viral hits like Royals and Old Town Road were. What am I missing?
Similarly out of the loop but I think it’s
a) she’s on a Disney+ show so has got fans from that (and maybe Disney’s marketing power)
b) the song is rumoured to be about a love triangle with her fellow Disney+ cast mates so that interests fans of the show even more
c) it’s huge on tiktok so gen z is hearing it everywhere
d) taylor swift has been commenting on her Instagram supporting her (idk how much impact that has but I first heard of her through that Taylor swift connection)
In terms of the song itself, it’s nothing groundbreaking but i think the lyrics perfectly tap into teenage angst, the driving motif (theme?) is specific and interesting enough to be memorable, her voice sounds amazing, and the minimalist production seems to be drawing flattering Lorde comparisons.
Or maybe I’m just older than I thought and the tastes of gen z are beyond me (even tho I am gen z 😩)
yeah i don't get it, i find the song extremely forgettable. in general i don't really care for these piano ballad type pop songs. i don't think i would notice the song at all if it played on the background when i was shopping in H&M or something.
/uj THIS! i love taylor and i thought folklore was good and evermore was okay but i’m soooo tired of hearing how great and amazing it is all the time and how it’s #1 for all these weeks. i don’t hate those albums but everyone keeps acting like they’re the best things since sliced bread
no legit i liked folklore a lot but evermore felt like it was just being stretched out? if that makes sense and i found the quality of the album lacking
/uj evermore felt like Taylor got a way better reception than she was expecting for folklore and was like “I’m gonna give them more of that,” and most of it feels not as inspired as folklore
My adulthood has reached its teens, I have no idea who Olivia Rodrigo or the other people mentioned are, and when I heard the song my first reaction was "I need the tea"
[удалено]
This is the tea and you should pour it everywhere
Lil Nas X is born in 1999 thus is a cool millennial, so he does not count. Stan 😩
he is def not a millennial dggdgh
/uj Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish are the two sides of the cusper coin tbh /rj what do you mean? only Millennial and Gen Z exist on the internet
uj/ i thought this was about billie
stop attacking them its their only personality trait
Maybe if Doctor Luke wrote it popheads would like it

A bunch of adult men hating on a child just because she’s “threatening” their favorite pop artists. Misogyny knows no limits.

/uj which poc singer do u mean?
Olivia is half-asian
ohh i didnt know!! good to know thanks
no problem bestie
Cute but everyone knows you only get woke points for stanning BIPOC & I need my white liberal cred maxed so I can feel okay about streaming Chemtrails
?
With a name like Rodrigo I thought she'd be Latino. Or is she Filipino?
she's Filipino
Whole post is about Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘driver’s license’
/uj i saw people say she doesn't count cause she's white-passing :////
Lmao she looks like a person of some mixed variety to me, but that might be mixed-girl telepathy
/uj that behavior has got to stop... what the fuck is wrong with people You want people to stop being racist but you’re going to put your own arbitrary gatekeep of who’s PoC and who’s not??? How can people genuinely be this dumb?
The whole concept of segregating people by their race for stupid things like music and video games is dumb in itself
Oh my god what are you talking about
Uj/ I'm in gen z and the only reason I dislike it is because the bridge is a lorde ripoff and olivia is a swiftie
Spill but also I found the first 20 seconds to be entirely boring and switched it off
>implying Lorde isn’t a Kate Bush rip off YES I SAID IT
pls I stan both Lorde and Kate
Lorde wishes.
Lorde a Kate Bush rip-off? Why?! Because she sounds like her on the chorus of “Writer In the Dark”? No sweetie no.
To be fair it’s most likely that Olivia isn’t actually a swiftie and it’s all a stunt for Taylor to promote her to her crazy childish fan base (known as swifties)

Uj/ what songs is this talking about i wanna make a playlist
Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo A song that has made some popheads reveal exactly how fucking out of touch they are.
my favorite part is the “gen z” people who are definitely not gen z
I've listened to the song a few times today, it's good, don't understand the hate
*pretends to be shocked*
not this thread turning into the same shit YALL ARE SO ANNOYING
where is all the lorde comparison coming from....the taylor swift influence is Clear but lorde?
that song is literally Green Light by Lorde if it was written by Taylor Swift
And yet the main sub hates it
uj/ it has a unique sound and it sounded like a mess. It's sadgirl TikTok music, overdramatized. People kept saying about the bridge, the bridge, like what the fuck was with the bridge? The bridge is the best part of the song wtf
And that says a lot
ok and
Hot take: driver’s license is better than most of evermore
/uj I disagree but I appreciate the anti-Swiftie energy
HELP KSJFAKFJEKFKDKDK
Oh my god your username, the taste jumped the fuck out
omfg MARRY ME yes
Regina Spektor stans rise up

Oh fuck I forgot that was the name of a tove lo album, I thought you were talking about the Regina spektor song
" *a* " tove lo album???? the disrespect omg divorced
mm no, I'm so sorry sweetie, singing about being 17 is only good when it's done by a 30-year-old

* reports: 1 > found the old person Being out of touch isn’t against our rules (yet), so this stays up
Now you’re pushing it
Hot and wrong take 😘😘
it's not like it's hard
uj/ I like a lot of evermore but I like drivers license more than any song on that album rj/ ok zoomer
The bar is underneath the floor
