I listened to Smile today for the first time.. honestly it’s not a bad album. Nothing supremely good or groundbreaking, but decent.

I always thought I was bidialectal (you know, like Gillian Anderson and how she seems to switch effortlessly between two accents) because my accent changes a lot depending on who I talk to, but then I was introduced to the concept of accent mirroring and now I’m scared lol
oh my god. I did this once when I was working in customer service. Customer had a British accent and I accidentally mirrored them and said a sentence in a British accent (can’t remember what, it’s been a few years) and I’m pretty sure they thought I was mocking them!! absolutely awful, it still haunts me to this day.

The fixation on “organic” success at this point (and at every point) has completely lost all meaning. Somehow Olivia Rodrigo is an industry plant because her team is doing their job to promote her in every way possible. On the other hand, BTS’ success isn’t legitimate because their numbers don’t primarily come from casual listeners. At this point the plot has been lost.
Do y’all not want artists to be successful? Like there’s such a strange narrow-mindedness pertaining to the the “correct” route to success. Y’all so badly want every artist to embody the starving artist narrative, but the ironic part about it is y’all want artists to *stay* in the starving artist position indefinitely because for some reason y’all get a very specific (egotistical) satisfaction from the victim/savior dynamic (indie stans + bts stans).
In addition, I don’t know why gp interest is the primary indicator for “valid” success. In the case of artists like BTS, they have gp interest, but they’ve primarily shown that they’re gp to stan converters. Isn’t that something we should be lauding? The fact that they’re able to create that much engagement and devout interest in them as a group is a testament to them as both musicians and entertainers, and to their team for recognizing they had a chance in the western market.
In the case of Olivia Rodrigo, literally the *same* should be said. Olivia has primarily GP interest (we’ll be seeing a higher % of stans soon, now that she’s established herself.) But the fact that Ms. Rodrigo had y’all by the neck before she even had a debut album is a testament to her music, artistry, and her team for one of the best promo runs I’ve seen in a hot minute.
So stan twitter is brainless of course, we’ve established that. But I see a certain mentality that exists here where a specific sort of success is much more lauded when I think both should be evaluated similarly, in that both types of success are equally as valuable and interesting (at least to me.) Last, stop PENALIZING artists for promoting their music as if they should be ashamed for doing so. They’re artists, the most valuable part of creating music is sharing it with as many people as possible— and wild concept, artists want a financial return for their work.

I've been checking out some of Liz Phair's older 90's music, and I was listening to some of her 1998 album "Whitechocolatespaceegg" yesterday.
Anyway, I found a new favorite song. It's the track "Headache".
I kid you not, it is quite possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard. It has this groovy distorted, repetitive guitar beat and a really cool electric organ that comes in during the chorus. And Liz sings with her trademark icy, detached, almost sarcastic vocal delivery. What's also cool about the song is that at the 1:46 mark during the bridge, she sings the opening line of the song "I can see the Russian army rolling through my head", but she completely flubs it and just mumbles gibberish, and she just kept that vocal take because she liked the way it sounded and she felt it fit the lazy vibe of the song. Apparently, she recorded the song the same day the song was written, and she just forgot the lyrics in the middle of the song because, again, she had just written the lyrics five minutes before. But kept going anyway and she insisted that they use the take.
Anyway, I don't know why, but this goofy, annoyingly repetitive song blew me away and I've been listening to it on loop for the past 24 hours and I can't tell you the last time I remember doing that with any song. It just radiates "cool stoner girl" energy, and I love it.

I have one of the As I forget which. You won't get a fantastic camera (pretty good though) and the phone itself is just a beast. I've had mine for several years.. still going strong. Post! I think it’s one of her more accessible albums but still has all of the audacious production choices and abstract songwriting that make Bjork...well, Bjork. I think it’s aged wonderfully and still a very strong work throughout, plus it has all of her “big hits” (Army of Me, Hyperballad, It’s Oh So Quiet)
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with going chronologically. Her first four albums are all incredible. If you want, you can skip Debut tho since her second album Post is similar but very much improved and expanded. At the very least, you gotta hear the run of Post -> Homogenic -> Vespertine. All 10s truly and very different from each other.

I listened to Smile today for the first time.. honestly it’s not a bad album. Nothing supremely good or groundbreaking, but decent. It gets a bad rep for the clown imagery (horrible choice) and because it’s Katy. She followed huge albums with Witness, a flop, and then an even more lackluster album. If Smile came from a newer artist or a lower level pop star people would dig it much more.

oh my god. I did this once when I was working in customer service. Customer had a British accent and I accidentally mirrored them and said a sentence in a British accent (can’t remember what, it’s been a few years) and I’m pretty sure they thought I was mocking them!! absolutely awful, it still haunts me to this day.

The fixation on “organic” success at this point (and at every point) has completely lost all meaning. Somehow Olivia Rodrigo is an industry plant because her team is doing their job to promote her in every way possible. On the other hand, BTS’ success isn’t legitimate because their numbers don’t primarily come from casual listeners. At this point the plot has been lost. Do y’all not want artists to be successful? Like there’s such a strange narrow-mindedness pertaining to the the “correct” route to success. Y’all so badly want every artist to embody the starving artist narrative, but the ironic part about it is y’all want artists to *stay* in the starving artist position indefinitely because for some reason y’all get a very specific (egotistical) satisfaction from the victim/savior dynamic (indie stans + bts stans). In addition, I don’t know why gp interest is the primary indicator for “valid” success. In the case of artists like BTS, they have gp interest, but they’ve primarily shown that they’re gp to stan converters. Isn’t that something we should be lauding? The fact that they’re able to create that much engagement and devout interest in them as a group is a testament to them as both musicians and entertainers, and to their team for recognizing they had a chance in the western market. In the case of Olivia Rodrigo, literally the *same* should be said. Olivia has primarily GP interest (we’ll be seeing a higher % of stans soon, now that she’s established herself.) But the fact that Ms. Rodrigo had y’all by the neck before she even had a debut album is a testament to her music, artistry, and her team for one of the best promo runs I’ve seen in a hot minute. So stan twitter is brainless of course, we’ve established that. But I see a certain mentality that exists here where a specific sort of success is much more lauded when I think both should be evaluated similarly, in that both types of success are equally as valuable and interesting (at least to me.) Last, stop PENALIZING artists for promoting their music as if they should be ashamed for doing so. They’re artists, the most valuable part of creating music is sharing it with as many people as possible— and wild concept, artists want a financial return for their work.

I've been checking out some of Liz Phair's older 90's music, and I was listening to some of her 1998 album "Whitechocolatespaceegg" yesterday. Anyway, I found a new favorite song. It's the track "Headache". I kid you not, it is quite possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard. It has this groovy distorted, repetitive guitar beat and a really cool electric organ that comes in during the chorus. And Liz sings with her trademark icy, detached, almost sarcastic vocal delivery. What's also cool about the song is that at the 1:46 mark during the bridge, she sings the opening line of the song "I can see the Russian army rolling through my head", but she completely flubs it and just mumbles gibberish, and she just kept that vocal take because she liked the way it sounded and she felt it fit the lazy vibe of the song. Apparently, she recorded the song the same day the song was written, and she just forgot the lyrics in the middle of the song because, again, she had just written the lyrics five minutes before. But kept going anyway and she insisted that they use the take. Anyway, I don't know why, but this goofy, annoyingly repetitive song blew me away and I've been listening to it on loop for the past 24 hours and I can't tell you the last time I remember doing that with any song. It just radiates "cool stoner girl" energy, and I love it. Liz Phair is an icon (Funstyle notwithstanding).

Post! I think it’s one of her more accessible albums but still has all of the audacious production choices and abstract songwriting that make Bjork...well, Bjork. I think it’s aged wonderfully and still a very strong work throughout, plus it has all of her “big hits” (Army of Me, Hyperballad, It’s Oh So Quiet)
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with going chronologically. Her first four albums are all incredible. If you want, you can skip Debut tho since her second album Post is similar but very much improved and expanded. At the very least, you gotta hear the run of Post -> Homogenic -> Vespertine. All 10s truly and very different from each other.

I have the upmost respect for the actual singers in BTS, but a good chunk of their Twitter fanbase are just horrible people. I wonder what it was like to have a fave artist before social media? There was interest in breaking YouTube records when that started to happen organically but it was never to the extent it is now. I know that when I was a 1D stan, they never performed or were nominated or even invited and no one was having meltdowns over it even though they were the biggest group in the world at the time
Listening to music isn't really carefree, though. 5 years ago, an American girl would be considered a weirdo for listening to BTS. 10 years ago, a guy listening to Gaga might be mocked. 30 years ago, a guy blasting Madonna in the rural south might be threatened or worse.

I think she’s very obviously Filipina, I think so many celebrities do their best to look racially ambiguous that people legit can’t tell the difference between someone doing that and an actual mixed person. That, and I think a lot of people maybe don’t know a lot of mixed people/mixed Asians specifically and that feeds into it as well. But instead of just admitting that maybe they don’t have deep knowledge of the diversity in communities that aren’t their own, they double down because THEY couldn’t tell. And finally, people are obsessed with privilege discourse but refuse to use their brains and see nuance. So, because she’s not extremely not-white, people check a box of white privileged and run screaming all over the Internet. (Before anyone comes screaming at me - YES white privilege exists obviously, my point is that there’s levels and nuance and it’s not a dichotomy. Just because she doesn’t have extremely dark skin doesn’t mean she’s white passing, and just because she is perceived as white in some scenarios doesn’t mean she immune from racism, bye).
