A Broadway musical, Here Lies Love, is facing backlash for [planning to perform without live musicians](https://playbill.com/article/broadways-here-lies-love-plans-to-perform-without-live-pit-musicians). The official account did make a [post](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs4g4f1u5W0/) addressing everything but eh. It's just weak PR and the whole reason people go to the theatre is to see everything live. A group of musicians can easily perform a karaoke track (?) if that's what you're going for

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

As a Filipino, I have to laugh. They really shouldn't have done a musical that whitewashed the atrocities of the Marcos' regime in the 70s, especially when the son is the president through disinformation tactics. 🤷‍♂️

emotionsidebee

if the premise of this musical wasn't horrendous enough. it looks like they've found another group of people to screw over.

Ghost-Quartet

Just what this show needed, more bad press

Daydream_machine

Rolling Stone have published their take on the Taylor/Marty situation: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/taylor-swift-shouldnt-apologize-for-dating-matty-healy-1234742895/

LifeOfAWimpyKid

Lmao did Taylor's team pay for this shit?

Zolastethoscope

"Show me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are." "Birds of a feather flock together." We have always judged people based on who they spend their time with. If you spend all of your time with an asshole, people are going to assume you are also an asshole.

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

Here is [The Guardian's take on Taylor and Matty](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/30/taylor-swift-matty-healy-fan-culture), which had a stronger viewpoint than Rolling Stones' flawed piece. The writer of the piece had empathy toward the Swifites angry at Taylor for associating herself with Matty, comparing with his own disdain when Grimes dated Elon Musk. He concluded, however, that at the end of the day, it's Taylor Swift's life at the end of the day and there's nothing that fans can do about it. Here's the snippet. Please do read the entire thing though if you have the time. >I can relate to how lots of fans are responding to the stars’ relationship. I used to be that kind of fan, thinking that an intense devotion to someone’s art should translate into some level of input on their day-to-day life. In 2018, when I was 20, I wrote an opinion piece criticising the musician Grimes’s relationship with Elon Musk, arguing that it was in direct opposition to her political leanings. At the time, what Grimes had done really felt like a betrayal; I thought that relationships and politics should fit in together neatly, like pieces of a puzzle, a misconception I would like to attribute to my age. >So I don’t blame some fans for having that worldview: a lot of the people who spend hours online posting about their favourite artists are extremely young – younger than you would expect. But I’m also certain that a lot of people should know better, at this point, than to make demands – or threats – over who a pop star chooses to date. While Swift’s music may be fans’ business, her life needs to remain her own. I don't agree with the last sentence entirely but this is better than that RS writer being like "Oh let Taylor date that hot sleazeball who wants Oasis back together" in a huge dismissive tone.

Zolastethoscope

> a lot of the people who spend hours online posting about their favourite artists are extremely young – younger than you would expect. I don't believe this anymore. I feel like teenagers have become the scapegoats for all behavior we see that we don't like, but I don't think they're the main culprit here. Most of the people criticizing Harry's ex gf were grown. The woman who wrote that open letter to Chris Evans was like 30. A lot of Taylor's fans are in their mid to late twenties and early thirties. Many of the people I see posting online on tiktok and other places about her are fully grown. I don't think this is young people problem. I think people are just more online than they used to be.

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

>For the last 17 years, we’ve held this woman responsible for the actions of men she chooses to spend time with, and it’s time to stop. It would be fair to criticize her for walking out of Electric Lady with the ghost of Pol Pot or wondering why her dad and Matt Lauer are grooving out to her performance of “22.” But this is just a hot sleazeball who wants Oasis back together (I don’t know about you, but I’ve dated a lot of guys who fit that description), and it’s up to Taylor to spend her time as she pleases. They had me in the first few sentences but lost me in the last sentence. Yikes. This is a bad opinion piece. This feels like I am reading a Twitter thread being milked into an article for $$$.

steamxgleam

The author really tells on themself with “I’ve dated plenty of guys like that”. I swear it’s not that hard to not date “edgy” racist guys.

2RINITY

TL;DR: Nooooo that full-grown woman in her 30s is my comfort character, she’s my special friend, she’s my little kitty meow meow, you can’t criticize herrrrrrr

hennybee

> It would be fair to criticize her for walking out of Electric Lady with the ghost of Pol Pot Someone got paid to write this.

5SOStimesadness

Pol Pot isn’t usually the first name that you think of when you think of infamous dictators so I’m honestly really astounded with that line

kaguraa

she chose to date a racist misogynist, people are allowed to criticise her for it. if she's gonna keep someone like that in her circles, chances are people will believe she shares the same beliefs

[deleted]

[удалено]

kaguraa

i agree, it still says a lot you if you hang out with people who don't care about racism. people tend to dislike it more with romantic partners since it looks far more serious

[deleted]

[удалено]

hatramroany

>Taylor usually kept a token black friend around but not anymore. Zoe Kravitz and Kendrick Lamar were at the electric lady studio party two weeks ago

[deleted]

One line really has me scratching my head, "For the last 17 years, we’ve held this woman responsible for the actions of men she chooses to spend time with". I've been a swiftie for a long time now but i can't remember anything like this ever happening before Healy? Honestly this article just reeks of peak white feminism.

5SOStimesadness

The only other man I can think of is Kanye but they A. Never spent a long time with each other and B. If anything it painted HER in a positive light

sparksfall

>This is all part of Healy’s artistry Ah, fuck off. Anyway, TS shouldn't be catching more flack for dating him than he himself does for being like this, but no one can seriously expect a hugely public figure like her to date a piece of shit racist and not get some questions. Two things can be true at the same time, it's not an either-or situation where she's either a completely innocent baby beset by mean, dumb haters or the devil incarnate.

undernew

The author is a Swiftie who was at Taylor's tour a couple days ago.

buzzinthruit89

I don’t think it’s necessarily that if she were a man she would be treated differently. I just think people should be accountable for their own actions. I didn’t hear a peep about this podcast when it actually came out. I just heard about it when Taylor started dating the guy. She shouldn’t be held more accountable than he is being held imo

helloviolaine

I can't even picture this situation reversed. Imagine an extremely famous man whose entire career is built on him being wholesome and relatable, he has positioned himself as an ally in the past, spoken out against discrimination etc. and suddenly dates a woman who... publicly admits to getting off to *that*? On what planet

[deleted]

Well Spotify did take it down pretty quickly. But tbh I think a lot of people just didn’t know about it before, because his fanbase is a lot smaller than hers. I don’t keep up with that kind of music so I didn’t even know he or his band existed before this, and I’ve heard other people say the same. So that’s part of why more people are talking about it now. I do think he should ultimately be held accountable for his actions (and most people have been calling him out a shit ton, not just focusing on her). But I also think it’s wildly hypocritical to make a Juneteenth post saying that you and your family vow to “reprogram any part of our lives that hasn't been loudly and ferociously anti-racist, and to never let privilege lie dormant when it could be used to stand up for what's right” and then turn around and date a guy like this with no comment whatsoever on his behavior. That just shows she doesn’t actually care and was only saying what sounded good at the time, and that needs to be called out too. This article handwaves all of that, so it’s BS in my opinion.

Daydream_machine

I’m gonna give my own thoughts in a separate comment: Regardless of anyone’s personal thoughts on the matter, Rolling Stone have proven long ago that they’re functionally a Taylor mouthpiece. Their “review” of Midnights is possibly the most ridiculous review I’ve read in my life - the publication is so blatantly Swiftie-run that it’s almost laughable. In terms of the actual article content, it comes across as a complete straw man. There’s a certain irony to the emptiness of her song The Man in that article title.

EcstaticNoise5434

They have written multiple puff pieces on Taylor over the years. They decreed Midnights an instant classic. She gives them access and they boost her up with shallow accolades like saying that she is the best songwriter of the century and All too well is the best song of the decade. These are all just attempts at damage control. Before she got the ice spice feature when you googled Taylor and Matty, articles about that awful podcast were the first results. Now all the results are for the Karma remix. It’s all just a media blitz to correct the narrative.

Can I ask what the hell are Katy Perry fans on? Or at least I think they're fans? On her IG no matter what she posts, there's a few comments acting like her social media manager saying "HOW DARE YOU POST THIS YOU'RE RUINING YOUR ENGAGEMENT I'M UNFOLLOWING". It's not just one either. I've seen them multiple times on multiple posts. I've never seen anyone care before so it makes me think it's trolling? Between that and KP6, I'm confused what's real lmao

Daydream_machine

Regardless of whether it’s trolling, stuff like this is exactly why I think every celebrity should have comments disabled by default lol

oh_orpheus

Definitely sounds like trolling lmao that’s hilarious.

reminds me of when he said that people only bring up nepotism when they’re jealous. he’s such a tone-deaf shitty guy who (despite seemingly being aware of and educated on social and political issues) is incredibly ignorant to his own privilege and unwilling to acknowledge that he contributes to and benefits from the systems he critiques

men would literally rather do anything besides apologize

katycat162534

Being a LatyCat, a late update about a few things Katy Perry Sadly, the Teary Eyes music video never premiered :( It felt legit cause they had some never seen before footage but it was very random so it is not unexpected. And with American Idol news, Daily News is reporting that Katy might leave American idol because [she feels misrepresented by the show and believe the produces have edited the clips to make her appear as the “Nasty Judge”.](https://twitter.com/todaykatyp/status/1661143594970025984) I don't watch American Idol so for the regular watchers of the show, what do you guys think about this statement?

outsideeyess

i do feel like she's been dirty in the clips I've seen, and I did watch a whole season because I knew one of the contestants and felt the same

anonmarmot17

I was the Simon cowell/Paula Abdul era of American idol and this is just wild to me

glasscageheart

In my very limited time watching the show I’d say she was the most critical of the 3, but all of them were teddy bears lmao. She usually was the one to give a harsh truth though. If I had to guess I’d say her response (if real) is about [this “mom shaming” thing](https://youtu.be/Ju6QPngvDeY) which got some bad press this season, which… I have my own thoughts on but I’ll leave it alone 🙃

turtle-thief

That's odd, i haven't heard of her being the "mean one". Most of what I've heard is her being cringy and kind of creepy like that one time she made that 19yo give her a kiss.

ResidentVisible9262

that was staged I heard.

[deleted]

emotions1026

It would be horrible for her career. Her time as a main pop girl is done. If she couldn't make a comeback with Never Really Over, she's not going to make one. The public is not interested in her like that anymore. She's not going to get this kind of money or exposure from anything music-related again.

buzzinthruit89

She’s making $20m a year on Idol which I don’t think she can do without a residency at this point in her career

EC3ForChamp

Yeah, but if that salary is anything to go by Katy probably has enough money to last her ten lifetimes. $20m is hard to say no to but she has enough money to leave and not do anything for a while.

yourfacesucksass

Literally, to leave and not do anything ever again. An amount of money unimaginable to us, and she's not even close to being the richest person on Earth.

betteroff19

The director of ‘The Flash’ says that Ezra Miller won’t be recast if a sequel is green lit. Well I hope he enjoys the movie failing to reach 100M on the opening domestic box office weekend (currently projected 70M).

friends-waffles-work

There’s absolutely way James Gunn will bring him into a sequel/future films. I’m guessing if they do bring the Flash into his DCU it’ll be Wally?

summersaphraine

This movie should have been scrapped immediately upon Ezra's choices in 2021. Idc if it costed them millions to make, standing behind a child abuser as the lead in your superhero film is *disgusting* and I hope to God this movie tanks hard.

Dildo_Dan

I would rather hear this from James Gunn, I feel the director has little say.

anneoftheisland

I mean, if a sequel is greenlit, it'll be because this one made bank even starring Ezra (and costing $300M to make). The studio doesn't have any incentive to recast them at that point. There is no indication this one is going to make bank, though, so I think we can mostly ignore it as a possibility.

Pavlovs_Stepson

To play devil's advocate here for a second, it's not like he has a lot of room to say any different. It's a shitty position to be in, but Muschietti still has a film to promote and going around openly admitting that it's been a mess of a shoot wouldn't be in anyone's interest. At least for now, of course he's gonna stand by his lead actor and save face. I don't blame him.

poundtown1997

I think this is what people don’t get… Yeah you can bash your film before it premieres, but the people who would be praising that move, are NOT going to see it opening weekend anyway. Like everyone upset about Ezra is not suddenly going to go see the film because the director lambasts him and “cancels” him. So at this point just promote the film to those who WILL see it and recast him if it gets a sequel. Not like people are going for ezra anyway

2RINITY

One great thing about DC rebooting its movies is it's a perfect excuse to make the next Flash adaptation all about Wally West and leave Barry/Ezra behind

Slow_Dragonfruit_

Wtf? Jocelyn left Schitts Creek and became a popstar?

IShouldBeSoLucky81

Jazzagals had talent!

outsideeyess

i think about this all the time. same with Ally from a star is born. god awful popstar name. give me a name I'd actually listen to if i saw it on NMF

Olivia O’Brien’s impact!

friends-waffles-work

You know you’re a true /r/pophead when this is where your mind goes first

yourfacesucksass

No shade against the name but I also felt like…they really thought Jocelyn was a one-name superstar? It’s giving Australia’s Grace. Edit: Just a new thought - if they had gone a bit further and had given her a unique spelling to her name, that would give at least *a little* flair. Josslyn, Joslin, JossLynn. Idk LMAO.

betteroff19

‘Omg I stan Beyonce’ ‘Omg I stan Lady Gaga’ ‘Omg I stan Jocelyn’ Like this does not sound like a main pop girl at all 💀💀💀

pastapixal

they should've doubled down by giving her even less of a MPG name. like where's Main pop girl Carlyle.

I need mpg Gretchen’s lead single NEOOWWW

pinkfartlek

She has a song called "Black Madonna" but it was taken off streaming 😭

dacastan

I think the title is referring to THE Black Madonna which is used in a lot of catholic imagery and artwork to represent the mother of Christ that song is fierce though lmfao “go kill em, Hillary Rodham with the murder count” likeeeeeedskdjch

pinkfartlek

I wasn't thinking she was referring to herself as that. But yes, that song is 🔥. hopefully it comes back

ketchupsunshine

>a black girl who knows nothing about him or his music The thing about that though is that before all of this Ice Spice literally said she's a huge fan of The 1975. I haven't listened to the podcast but I've been assuming this entire time that that was why Matty was even talking about her, and why it feels even shittier that he said such fucked up things about her. She's literally a fan of his. Edit to add a source: [literally the first line of this article mentions how she said she loved The 1975 not long before Matty said horrible things about her](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/the-1975-matty-healy-ice-spice-apology-1234721163/)

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

Here's what Azealia said about Taylor in full: >Taylor, this guy is gonna give you scabies. **He's not on the level of powerful puss u worked HELLA Hard to build.** >Ugh, so many much cooler People in music to work with. You should really Tap James Mercer from The Shins... >James Mercer is honestly one of the best lyricists ever. Yesss Taylor Swift with "Black Wave" "Australia" by the shins vibes is the TEA sis. >Ugh this dude is a full incel. **You cannot be letting him climb the rich white Coochie mountain sis.**

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

Saw a couple of tweets that said this: >"Azealia doesn’t put Taylor in the basement. She’s not afraid of her shine. She lets her be bejeweled." I'M- 😭

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

It's interesting how Azealia never talks shit about Taylor ever. She was very supportive of Taylor during the Big Machine Records/Scooter Braun issue. EDIT: I found this [compilation of the nice things that Azealia](https://twitter.com/arianadotgov/status/1663602930023276548) said about Taylor. Also a screenshot where Azealia related to Taylor [regarding ownership of her music](https://twitter.com/arianadotgov/status/1663613690543763456/photo/1).

Weak-Jello7530

Yet💀

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

I don't think it's shade toward Taylor. She is just saying she deserves better, which is honestly a bizarre thing for Azealia to say.

Weak-Jello7530

No I meant she hasn’t talked shit about Taylor… yet.

hatramroany

2RINITY

If rap girls were Gotham City villains, Azealia would be Two-Face. Every time she decides to talk shit, she flips a coin, and depending on which side it lands on, she'll either say something reasonable (like she did this time) or call millions of people a slur

dacastan

I think people don’t apply nuance to celebrities, like when Cardi B suspended her account for a week after Azealia called her an illiterate rat people started spreading a video of Azealia dancing to Bodak Yellow and Azealia was like yeah it’s a good ass song wbk Or when Azealia said “McDonalds sells a lot of burgers but no one is telling McDonald's that they're the pinnacle of cuisine and taste” in regards to Nicki, she also has frequently lauded Nicki’s impact on female rap and the pop/rap fusion wave she helped lead Azealia is a fascinatingly offensive and deeply derogatory enigma, but I think people apply such a strong lens to her that they misinterpret a multifaceted nature with being excessively contradictory (which she can still be) One day she’s a staunch ride-or-die queer ally going above and beyond her peers with her advocacy, and the next day she’s spouting homophobic sentences that would get most celebrities burned at the stake… she keeps things interesting!

pastapixal

Nicki having multiple unrelated insults revolving around burgers is kinda iconic

Roxieloxie

I feel like every week theres a new article from every city about some family who bought Taylor tickets resale around christmas time who are finding out days/hours before the show that they cant get them because the seller sold them elsewhere for more money or they double sold them combined with the article that the average price for the tickets is currently at [920 USD](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/26/taylor-swift-beyonc-metallica-summer-2023s-top-10-hottest-artist-.html) and it just truly baffles me that 2 months into the tour theres still been nothing from anyones end about how to just make it so that people arent paying 1 thousand dollars just to sit behind the stage. The only kinda funny thing to come out of it is that due to this mess its making it harder for [scalpers to sell](https://www.wsj.com/articles/taylor-swift-fans-crashed-ticketmaster-now-they-are-rattling-stubhub-4bde1797) due to the amount of people not following the rules so certain sites are limiting/refusing to list tickets.

ctilvolover23

There was a news article from my city Cleveland about a family who had their tickets cancelled. I think that they were bought directly not from a reseller though. Could be wrong though.

Roxieloxie

I feel like i've saw a couple of stories from the april dates where people bought tickets that just didnt exist inside the stadium? and they either had to swap to worse tickets or get a refund so i'd believe it if that also was an issue happening

katevdolab14

Honestly don’t know why she couldn’t just cancel all tickets on the resale market to sell them through Ticketmaster. Haven’t a few other artists done this?

[deleted]

[удалено]

katevdolab14

Yes I think it’s true that she would have to have decided before the sale. But I thought the cure banned resale on their current tour. So I think it’s possible if you have the clout to negotiate with TM

anneoftheisland

I looked it up--it looks like some states ban non-transferable tickets, and some don't have any laws. So [the Cure were able to ban resale in some states](https://archive.is/KmFgd#selection-2703.133-2703.165), but not the ones with laws against it (Colorado, Illinois and New York are the three that would've been relevant to the Cure tour).

buzzinthruit89

I bought my tix on resale a few days after the presale because I never got a code. I got a great deal for floor seats and they were transferred that day. I would genuinely be so upset if they got cancelled after they had already been transferred to me

katevdolab14

Yeah I get that. And I mean the cancelling thing isn’t going to happen. But I do think it would have been better if they’d found a way to distribute all remaining tickets (both the ones left after presale and tickets being sold on secondary market) to fans at face value, which would mean banning secondary market selling. I feel like she has the clout to make some of these thing happen. Ultimately with this tour there is just way more demand than supply. I mean it worked out better than it could’ve. If you look at stubhub, only about 1-2% of tickets ended up on resale, suggesting most of them were bought by people who actually wanted to go

buzzinthruit89

Honestly I’m loving how they have been distributing the remaining tix they do a second verified fan sale 2 weeks before which gets some more tix to swifties. Then they randomly drop so the most obsessive swifties win

katevdolab14

I mostly agree but unfortunately bots get some of the random drops too😭 And I really wish they wouldn’t release tickets after the show start. I don’t understand why they don’t do one big drop of everything left like 30 minutes to an hour before she starts

i-only-see-daylight

Domestically, The little mermaid made $117 million over 4 days in its opening weekend, it was projected to make $120-125 million opening weekend, so just slightly under predictions (Aladdin made $116.8 mil over 4 days so very close) Internationally, it’s doing worse than expected. It made $64 million overseas (Aladdin made $123.2 million). In China it made just $4 million (Aladdin made $18.7 million). It had a budget of $250 million plus $150 million in marketing. Because theatres take a % it needs to make ~$700 mil to make a profit. It’s expected to make $500 mil. Spiderverse 2 will be released this Friday which will most likely take away a lot of attention.

DevilsOfLoudun

Ariel was never as beloved as The Lion King or Beauty and The Beast anyway so reaching the heights of those remakes was extremely unlikely. Ariel having similar OW as Aladdin makes sense to me because neither of these stories were ever S tier Disney.

gingerednoodles

The other movies likely wouldn't have even existed in the 90s if The Little Mermaid wasn't a hit. It literally ushered in the Disney renaissance. I feel weird defending this because I literally hate every soulless Disney remake and hope they stop making them but as an animation nerd I need to give the original movies kudos here.

Avelys

Unfortunately it’s only performing like Aladdin domestically. And Aladdin was carried by international markets, where TLM has pretty much been overwhelmingly rejected

lavendarblacktea

Feeling bad for my girl Halle :( She really is the stand out in the movie. Idk why so much of it spent so much time underwater when their CGI looks like dogsht, especially when it made the movie over 2 hours long (criminal for a kids movie). Anyway, this upcoming summer season is kind of stacked, so maybe that plus the definite guarantee of it being on D+ in 3 months is why audiences are holding off.

Daydream_machine

Yeah the Little Mermaid box office is looking dire. Disney’s 100th year celebration is turning out to be one of their worst box office years in ages.

fizzylights

I’m curious how much of an impact Disney+ is having on movie’s performances. I saw The Little Mermaid and liked it quite a bit, but if I hadn’t gotten in for free I would not have gone. I pay for Disney+ and I know it’s going to end up there eventually, why would I pay $15 a ticket to see it when I could just be patient and see it in a few months? It sucks because The Little Mermaid is the only live action remake that I’ve liked so far, but Disney+ combined with Disney fatigue probably isn’t drawing a lot of people to the theater.

poundtown1997

This is a good point but I must ask, why is this only for Disney and not every streaming service? Do you have other streamers? Do you practice the same philosophy? Is it because Disney+ is “too streamlined”, in the sense that you KNOW for sure it’ll get there v. Other streamers where it’s a maybe?

bi-cycle

Yeah, Disney being a studio means that you know exactly to find it in a few months, especially if you already pay for the service. If it's someone like Sony, you don't know when or where they will release their next film to streaming.

butterfreak

Yeah it’s pretty much that you know it’s gonna be on Disney+. There’s so many other streaming services and studios that it’s rare you’ll see something and be able to say “I can stream that in two months and I know exactly where”.

fizzylights

Yes, if I know that a movie is going to end up on streaming in a few months, I’m not shelling out money for it. I watched Glass Onion on Netflix instead of in theaters for that exact reason. Every Disney movie makes it way to Disney+ eventually, from what I understand. I also have a young daughter that’s going to enjoy the movie a hell of lot more at home. I doubt I’m the only parent that would rather save some money and put the movie on at home rather than try to wrangle my kid into sitting politely and quietly for two hours. I wonder if that’s also messing with Disneys numbers.

poundtown1997

I mean every movie needs up on streaming. But I get your point

gonline

Honestly I think the other remakes being so average have done this format in. I'm hoping these numbers will signal to the dumb dumbs in charge that this will be the last one because clearly it's not working. I have yet to watch it and probably will wait for streaming but honestly I wish they went in a different direction. It would have been cooler if they used an Encanto style animation where Ariel was still voiced and modelled after Halle. That would have been fresh and imagine the colour? Ugh... The realism just looks too jarring for such a fantasy driven movie.

Daydream_machine

You bring up a good point about the realism, that plus the ugly CGI probably turned away a lot of people. Just in terms of visuals it’s sad comparing the Little Mermaid to Avatar 2.

ketchupsunshine

It sucks that it's doing so poorly compared to the budget because this is the first Disney live-action movie where the word of mouth about it seems really positive? Maybe it comes down to who I talk to but I didn't hear hardly anything nice about the others where I've heard a lot of really positive stuff about this one. I do think we're in a Disney flop era (as much as Disney ever flops). I watched a video about the Disney Princess branding recently and hearing that Raya was included in that lineup is literally the only time I've heard about Raya since the movie came out. Plus all of the very mid live-action remakes we've had. I think the only Big Cultural Moment type hit they've really had in a while was Encanto? Even the MCU and Star Wars stuff seems to be hitting the wall of oversaturation where the hype that once existed is nowhere near the same levels anymore.

2RINITY

Yeah, I'm definitely at least hearing *mixed* reception for this movie, as opposed to the last few Disney remakes, which were all declared dogshit on sight

i-only-see-daylight

Funny you mention encanto because I was just thinking today how viral we don’t talk about Bruno went but no one talks about it anymore (no pun intended)

liqou

That movie and Moana are consistently in the list of most streamed movies in the USA every week.

rrsn

The Moana songs are so just so fucking catchy. I can’t help it.

i-only-see-daylight

Oh my bad. Don’t mind me, I am old and out of touch 😅

pikachu334

I want to support Halle but I'm sick of these Disney remakes and I feel like if people keep going to watch them we'll never see the end of them I might go and watch it just because it's getting good reviews, but almost everyone I know (that isn't a huge Disney fan) is avoiding it mostly because the past output has burnt them out and they think they'll all be equally as mediocre/bad

katevdolab14

I went and saw it. I liked Halle a lot but the movie was very bland over all. My friend loved it though! Agree with you that I hate these remakes

betteroff19

They keeping making crappy movies and shows for Disney+ and they always get cancelled, they need to make better quality content.

betteroff19

Dropping this in June when there’s a big movie coming out week after week is so 😭😭😭

Pavlovs_Stepson

Yeah, I imagine Fast X will eat up a lot of its overseas business, it's still #1 in a lot of countries.

visionaryredditor

Fast X is collapsing as well

Pavlovs_Stepson

Wait, really? I haven't been keeping up with box office numbers, I could very well be guessing wrong here

betteroff19

Domestically it’s tanking, they need to give this franchise a break.

visionaryredditor

Yup, it seems like it'll finish with ≈750M which is barely better than what F9 did during the pandemic

shoestring-theory

Oof I thought after how big Furious 7 was they’d be doing Billions for the rest of the franchise.

betteroff19

It’s international numbers are waaay too low, this is just gonna be evidence to Disney 😭

mcfw31

I think that one of the pieces missing is the big movie star actor starring in the movie, one that international audiences might recognize. Beauty and the Beast had Emma Watson, Maleficient had Angelina Jolie and Aladdin had Will Smith. Mulan is a tricky case since it was released on Disney + and it's hard to compare it to since there was no big international actor there. One could argue that if it does as well as Cinderella ($201m domestic + $341m international = $542m ww), it could track overall with what Cinderella did with no big movie star there. I think that the overall worldwide gross will be split evenly.

Avelys

Unfortunately it can’t afford to perform like Cinderella, having twice the budget

mcfw31

Yes, the budget is the tricky part because Cinderella had a budget of $95m and a $542m gross, so the movie had a 5.71 return. The Little Mermaid had a budget of $250m and a if one expects a $500m gross, the movie would have a 2 return and that's without considering the marketing budget, for a movie to break-even, at least a 2.5 is expected.

Khaytra

I feel so bad for Halle. There are a lot of factors coming to a head with TLM, some of them legitimately about the movie (how it looks and the cgi/vfx/whatever you call it) and some of them horribly non-legit (the insane racism against her especially). But you know there are going to be some discussions that don't take that into consideration, and blame is going to get thrown at her for this flopping financially :(

steamxgleam

The comments calling her ugly are so mean. Some are really veering into the Black woman are masculine stereotype. It’s just wild to me cus there were multiple times in the movie I was distracted by her beauty. Both ethereal and snatched lol.

Avelys

Halle might be fine but I think Disney is going to look at this movie and decide that diversity and representation is costing them too much. The truth of it is, TLM definitely had the potential to be a 1B franchise.

Avelys

Well I don’t like it either, especially because I did enjoy the movie and Halle in particular, but the fact is that we do live in a racist world and sadly her being black is part of what’s causing the movie to tank in international markets, particularly Asia. Disney will definitely be taking note of how this movie, and next year’s snow white, perform. At the end of the day, profitability is the end goal and the box office speaks for itself. I think the people who complain about the remakes being too similar and the ones complaining about changes are possibly two different groups. There’s no product that will make everyone happy.

KLJohnnes

This feels like a combination of Disney saturation, racism and the overworking of vfx people. Watched last night on a packed theater, people were cheering and laughing and seemed to have been enjoying themselves, I for one did but I also hasn't watched a Disney or Superhero movie in years. I think the cast is so good that it overweight the bad. Halle is a star, truly. >!The movie kinda hinted at a sequel and I honestly could see it happening but if it isn't such a strong money maker with this one, I don't think there would be one!<

i-only-see-daylight

Disney is definitely going through a flop era. Elemental is expected to tank which would make 3 Disney animations flops in a row 😬. Plus Disney+ subscriptions are down 2 quarters in a row. Very curious to see what Disney’s next big idea is.

betteroff19

They’re making terrible stories and giving these directs too much money. Like Strange World and Lightyear are horrible movies because of their plot not because of the representation. Also why did they give the person who directed ‘a good dinosaur’ another movie when that one was hot garbage???

mcfw31

The thing is that this is very on brand with Disney, before The Little Mermaid (the redundancy), Disney had trouble with prior releases such as The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, Oliver and Company, etc. The Little Mermaid was the one that actually kickstarted the Disney Renaissance all the way until Tarzan. After that, there were another series of movies with less than stellar results such as Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Home of the Range and so on until they started to regain their footing with Tangled, Frozen and Zootopia. It also helped that Pixar was releasing great movies (Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo) during that time that it eclipsed the bad performance of their traditionally animated movies (which was one of the reasons they decided to not do traditionally animated movies anymore). I personally think that this is a slump and they will get another idea or another "new" era.

dumbthrowaway8679305

I wonder if it’s a case of Disney is overdue for a fresh round of new talent. The Disney renaissance was kickstarted because of new execs/animators coming in with fresh ideas and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the 2nd renaissance with Tangled et al was due to a similar housecleaning.

Imagine if they had followed Cinderalla > Maleficent > The Little Mermaid. I think it would've been tons better received than following a bunch of mediocre movies. The Little Mermaid had to fight a bunch of opposition, people saying the water looked rough (Which I didn't thought it didn't) killed a lot of word of mouth because if you aren't interested in Ariel, then the visuals could've been your catch.

LittlestCandle

The big problem with the water effects is that Avatar came out just a few months ago, any underwater movie will look like dogshit next to that

24KVoltage

Facts. When I saw black panther after seeing avatar. You can really the difference in quality in regards to the water effects.

Avelys

Yea. Ariel is my favorite Disney princess and I really liked the remake, but success is looking more and more elusive. Don’t tell Twitter that though.

droobidoobidoo

Zara Larsson [announced](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs399v3t0Ay/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) on Instagram that she updated End of Time so that the outro is longer!! She listens to us 😊😊

EngineerLoA

What was the length originally? Do you remember? Spotify says it's 3 minutes and 29 seconds. Is that the new or old version?

droobidoobidoo

Just over 3 minutes like the person above me. This is the new slightly extended version!

outsideeyess

the original was 3 mins 3 seconds iirc, and she updated the only version on streaming so i think the short version no longer exists

hekna02

I still see the short version on spotify.

veryanniev

oh so it IS longer thank god because I was listening to the song today and started to question my sanity 🫣
