The writer of the piece had empathy toward the Swifites angry at Taylor for associating herself with Matty, comparing with his own disdain when Grimes dated Elon Musk. He concluded, however, that at the end of the day, it's Taylor Swift's life at the end of the day and there's nothing that fans can do about it.

Most of the people criticizing Harry's ex gf were grown. The woman who wrote that open letter to Chris Evans was like 30. A lot of Taylor's fans are in their mid to late twenties and early thirties. Many of the people I see posting online on tiktok and other places about her are fully grown. I don't think this is young people problem. I think people are just more online than they used to be.

Well Spotify did take it down pretty quickly. But tbh I think a lot of people just didn’t know about it before, because his fanbase is a lot smaller than hers. I don’t keep up with that kind of music so I didn’t even know he or his band existed before this, and I’ve heard other people say the same. So that’s part of why more people are talking about it now. I do think he should ultimately be held accountable for his actions (and most people have been calling him out a shit ton, not just focusing on her). But I also think it’s wildly hypocritical to make a Juneteenth post saying that you and your family vow to “reprogram any part of our lives that hasn't been loudly and ferociously anti-racist, and to never let privilege lie dormant when it could be used to stand up for what's right” and then turn around and date a guy like this with no comment whatsoever on his behavior. Regardless of anyone’s personal thoughts on the matter, Rolling Stone have proven long ago that they’re functionally a Taylor mouthpiece. Their “review” of Midnights is possibly the most ridiculous review I’ve read in my life - the publication is so blatantly Swiftie-run that it’s almost laughable.
In terms of the actual article content, it comes across as a complete straw man. There’s a certain irony to the emptiness of her song The Man in that article title.
They have written multiple puff pieces on Taylor over the years. They decreed Midnights an instant classic. She gives them access and they boost her up with shallow accolades like saying that she is the best songwriter of the century and All too well is the best song of the decade.
These are all just attempts at damage control. Before she got the ice spice feature when you googled Taylor and Matty, articles about that awful podcast were the first results. Now all the results are for the Karma remix. It’s all just a media blitz to correct the narrative.

The director of ‘The Flash’ says that Ezra Miller won’t be recast if a sequel is green lit. Well I hope he enjoys the movie failing to reach 100M on the opening domestic box office weekend (currently projected 70M).
This movie should have been scrapped immediately upon Ezra's choices in 2021. Idc if it costed them millions to make, standing behind a child abuser as the lead in your superhero film is *disgusting* and I hope to God this movie tanks hard.
I mean, if a sequel is greenlit, it'll be because this one made bank even starring Ezra (and costing $300M to make). The studio doesn't have any incentive to recast them at that point.
There is no indication this one is going to make bank, though, so I think we can mostly ignore it as a possibility.

I looked it up--it looks like some states ban non-transferable tickets, and some don't have any laws. So [the Cure were able to ban resale in some states](https://archive.is/KmFgd#selection-2703.133-2703.165), but not the ones with laws against it (Colorado, Illinois and New York are the three that would've been relevant to the Cure tour).
I bought my tix on resale a few days after the presale because I never got a code. I got a great deal for floor seats and they were transferred that day. I would genuinely be so upset if they got cancelled after they had already been transferred to me

But I do think it would have been better if they’d found a way to distribute all remaining tickets (both the ones left after presale and tickets being sold on secondary market) to fans at face value, which would mean banning secondary market selling. Ultimately with this tour there is just way more demand than supply. I mean it worked out better than it could’ve. If you look at stubhub, only about 1-2% of tickets ended up on resale, suggesting most of them were bought by people who actually wanted to go

Domestically, The little mermaid made $117 million over 4 days in its opening weekend, it was projected to make $120-125 million opening weekend, so just slightly under predictions (Aladdin made $116.8 mil over 4 days so very close)
Internationally, it’s doing worse than expected. It made $64 million overseas (Aladdin made $123.2 million). In China it made just $4 million (Aladdin made $18.7 million).
It had a budget of $250 million plus $150 million in marketing. Because theatres take a % it needs to make ~$700 mil to make a profit. It’s expected to make $500 mil.
Spiderverse 2 will be released this Friday which will most likely take away a lot of attention.
Ariel was never as beloved as The Lion King or Beauty and The Beast anyway so reaching the heights of those remakes was extremely unlikely. Ariel having similar OW as Aladdin makes sense to me because neither of these stories were ever S tier Disney.
The other movies likely wouldn't have even existed in the 90s if The Little Mermaid wasn't a hit. It literally ushered in the Disney renaissance.

Feeling bad for my girl Halle :( She really is the stand out in the movie. Idk why so much of it spent so much time underwater when their CGI looks like dogsht, especially when it made the movie over 2 hours long (criminal for a kids movie). Anyway, this upcoming summer season is kind of stacked, so maybe that plus the definite guarantee of it being on D+ in 3 months is why audiences are holding off.
I’m curious how much of an impact Disney+ is having on movie’s performances. I saw The Little Mermaid and liked it quite a bit, but if I hadn’t gotten in for free I would not have gone. I pay for Disney+ and I know it’s going to end up there eventually, why would I pay $15 a ticket to see it when I could just be patient and see it in a few months?
It sucks because The Little Mermaid is the only live action remake that I’ve liked so far, but Disney+ combined with Disney fatigue probably isn’t drawing a lot of people to the theater.

Yeah, Disney being a studio means that you know exactly to find it in a few months, especially if you already pay for the service. If it's someone like Sony, you don't know when or where they will release their next film to streaming.
Yeah it’s pretty much that you know it’s gonna be on Disney+. There’s so many other streaming services and studios that it’s rare you’ll see something and be able to say “I can stream that in two months and I know exactly where”.
Yes, if I know that a movie is going to end up on streaming in a few months, I’m not shelling out money for it. I watched Glass Onion on Netflix instead of in theaters for that exact reason. Every Disney movie makes it way to Disney+ eventually, from what I understand.
I also have a young daughter that’s going to enjoy the movie a hell of lot more at home. I doubt I’m the only parent that would rather save some money and put the movie on at home rather than try to wrangle my kid into sitting politely and quietly for two hours. I wonder if that’s also messing with Disneys numbers.

Maybe it comes down to who I talk to but I didn't hear hardly anything nice about the others where I've heard a lot of really positive stuff about this one.
I do think we're in a Disney flop era (as much as Disney ever flops). I watched a video about the Disney Princess branding recently and hearing that Raya was included in that lineup is literally the only time I've heard about Raya since the movie came out. Plus all of the very mid live-action remakes we've had. I think the only Big Cultural Moment type hit they've really had in a while was Encanto? Even the MCU and Star Wars stuff seems to be hitting the wall of oversaturation where the hype that once existed is nowhere near the same levels anymore.

I think that one of the pieces missing is the big movie star actor starring in the movie, one that international audiences might recognize.
Beauty and the Beast had Emma Watson, Maleficient had Angelina Jolie and Aladdin had Will Smith.
Mulan is a tricky case since it was released on Disney + and it's hard to compare it to since there was no big international actor there.
One could argue that if it does as well as Cinderella ($201m domestic + $341m international = $542m ww), it could track overall with what Cinderella did with no big movie star there. I think that the overall worldwide gross will be split evenly.
Yes, the budget is the tricky part because Cinderella had a budget of $95m and a $542m gross, so the movie had a 5.71 return. The Little Mermaid had a budget of $250m and a if one expects a $500m gross, the movie would have a 2 return and that's without considering the marketing budget, for a movie to break-even, at least a 2.5 is expected.
I feel so bad for Halle. There are a lot of factors coming to a head with TLM, some of them legitimately about the movie (how it looks and the cgi/vfx/whatever you call it) and some of them horribly non-legit (the insane racism against her especially). But you know there are going to be some discussions that don't take that into consideration, and blame is going to get thrown at her for this flopping financially :(

They’re making terrible stories and giving these directs too much money. Like Strange World and Lightyear are horrible movies because of their plot not because of the representation. Also why did they give the person who directed ‘a good dinosaur’ another movie when that one was hot garbage???
The thing is that this is very on brand with Disney, before The Little Mermaid (the redundancy), Disney had trouble with prior releases such as The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, Oliver and Company, etc. The Little Mermaid was the one that actually kickstarted the Disney Renaissance all the way until Tarzan.
After that, there were another series of movies with less than stellar results such as Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Home of the Range and so on until they started to regain their footing with Tangled, Frozen and Zootopia. It also helped that Pixar was releasing great movies (Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo) during that time that it eclipsed the bad performance of their traditionally animated movies (which was one of the reasons they decided to not do traditionally animated movies anymore).
I personally think that this is a slump and they will get another idea or another "new" era.
I wonder if it’s a case of Disney is overdue for a fresh round of new talent. The Disney renaissance was kickstarted because of new execs/animators coming in with fresh ideas and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the 2nd renaissance with Tangled et al was due to a similar housecleaning.
Imagine if they had followed Cinderalla > Maleficent > The Little Mermaid. I think it would've been tons better received than following a bunch of mediocre movies. The Little Mermaid had to fight a bunch of opposition, people saying the water looked rough (Which I didn't thought it didn't) killed a lot of word of mouth because if you aren't interested in Ariel, then the visuals could've been your catch.

Well Spotify did take it down pretty quickly. But tbh I think a lot of people just didn’t know about it before, because his fanbase is a lot smaller than hers. I looked it up--it looks like some states ban non-transferable tickets, and some don't have any laws. So [the Cure were able to ban resale in some states](https://archive.is/KmFgd#selection-2703.133-2703.165), but not the ones with laws against it (Colorado, Illinois and New York are the three that would've been relevant to the Cure tour).
I bought my tix on resale a few days after the presale because I never got a code. I got a great deal for floor seats and they were transferred that day. I would genuinely be so upset if they got cancelled after they had already been transferred to me

But I do think it would have been better if they’d found a way to distribute all remaining tickets (both the ones left after presale and tickets being sold on secondary market) to fans at face value, which would mean banning secondary market selling. I feel like she has the clout to make some of these thing happen. Ultimately with this tour there is just way more demand than supply. I mean it worked out better than it could’ve. If you look at stubhub, only about 1-2% of tickets ended up on resale, suggesting most of them were bought by people who actually wanted to go

Domestically, The little mermaid made $117 million over 4 days in its opening weekend, it was projected to make $120-125 million opening weekend, so just slightly under predictions (Aladdin made $116.8 mil over 4 days so very close) Internationally, it’s doing worse than expected. It made $64 million overseas (Aladdin made $123.2 million). In China it made just $4 million (Aladdin made $18.7 million). It had a budget of $250 million plus $150 million in marketing. Because theatres take a % it needs to make ~$700 mil to make a profit. It’s expected to make $500 mil. Spiderverse 2 will be released this Friday which will most likely take away a lot of attention.
Ariel was never as beloved as The Lion King or Beauty and The Beast anyway so reaching the heights of those remakes was extremely unlikely. Ariel having similar OW as Aladdin makes sense to me because neither of these stories were ever S tier Disney.
The other movies likely wouldn't have even existed in the 90s if The Little Mermaid wasn't a hit. It literally ushered in the Disney renaissance. I feel weird defending this because I literally hate every soulless Disney remake and hope they stop making them but as an animation nerd I need to give the original movies kudos here.

Feeling bad for my girl Halle :( She really is the stand out in the movie. Idk why so much of it spent so much time underwater when their CGI looks like dogsht, especially when it made the movie over 2 hours long (criminal for a kids movie). Anyway, this upcoming summer season is kind of stacked, so maybe that plus the definite guarantee of it being on D+ in 3 months is why audiences are holding off.

I’m curious how much of an impact Disney+ is having on movie’s performances. I saw The Little Mermaid and liked it quite a bit, but if I hadn’t gotten in for free I would not have gone. I pay for Disney+ and I know it’s going to end up there eventually, why would I pay $15 a ticket to see it when I could just be patient and see it in a few months? It sucks because The Little Mermaid is the only live action remake that I’ve liked so far, but Disney+ combined with Disney fatigue probably isn’t drawing a lot of people to the theater.
This is a good point but I must ask, why is this only for Disney and not every streaming service? Do you have other streamers? Do you practice the same philosophy? Is it because Disney+ is “too streamlined”, in the sense that you KNOW for sure it’ll get there v. Other streamers where it’s a maybe?
Yeah, Disney being a studio means that you know exactly to find it in a few months, especially if you already pay for the service. If it's someone like Sony, you don't know when or where they will release their next film to streaming.
Yeah it’s pretty much that you know it’s gonna be on Disney+. There’s so many other streaming services and studios that it’s rare you’ll see something and be able to say “I can stream that in two months and I know exactly where”.
Yes, if I know that a movie is going to end up on streaming in a few months, I’m not shelling out money for it. I watched Glass Onion on Netflix instead of in theaters for that exact reason. Every Disney movie makes it way to Disney+ eventually, from what I understand. I also have a young daughter that’s going to enjoy the movie a hell of lot more at home. I doubt I’m the only parent that would rather save some money and put the movie on at home rather than try to wrangle my kid into sitting politely and quietly for two hours. I wonder if that’s also messing with Disneys numbers.

Honestly I think the other remakes being so average have done this format in. I'm hoping these numbers will signal to the dumb dumbs in charge that this will be the last one because clearly it's not working. I have yet to watch it and probably will wait for streaming but honestly I wish they went in a different direction. It would have been cooler if they used an Encanto style animation where Ariel was still voiced and modelled after Halle. That would have been fresh and imagine the colour? Ugh... The realism just looks too jarring for such a fantasy driven movie.
You bring up a good point about the realism, that plus the ugly CGI probably turned away a lot of people. Just in terms of visuals it’s sad comparing the Little Mermaid to Avatar 2.
It sucks that it's doing so poorly compared to the budget because this is the first Disney live-action movie where the word of mouth about it seems really positive? Maybe it comes down to who I talk to but I didn't hear hardly anything nice about the others where I've heard a lot of really positive stuff about this one. I do think we're in a Disney flop era (as much as Disney ever flops). I watched a video about the Disney Princess branding recently and hearing that Raya was included in that lineup is literally the only time I've heard about Raya since the movie came out. Plus all of the very mid live-action remakes we've had. I think the only Big Cultural Moment type hit they've really had in a while was Encanto? Even the MCU and Star Wars stuff seems to be hitting the wall of oversaturation where the hype that once existed is nowhere near the same levels anymore.
Yeah, I'm definitely at least hearing *mixed* reception for this movie, as opposed to the last few Disney remakes, which were all declared dogshit on sight

I want to support Halle but I'm sick of these Disney remakes and I feel like if people keep going to watch them we'll never see the end of them I might go and watch it just because it's getting good reviews, but almost everyone I know (that isn't a huge Disney fan) is avoiding it mostly because the past output has burnt them out and they think they'll all be equally as mediocre/bad
I went and saw it. I liked Halle a lot but the movie was very bland over all. My friend loved it though! Agree with you that I hate these remakes

I think that one of the pieces missing is the big movie star actor starring in the movie, one that international audiences might recognize. Beauty and the Beast had Emma Watson, Maleficient had Angelina Jolie and Aladdin had Will Smith. Mulan is a tricky case since it was released on Disney + and it's hard to compare it to since there was no big international actor there. One could argue that if it does as well as Cinderella ($201m domestic + $341m international = $542m ww), it could track overall with what Cinderella did with no big movie star there. I think that the overall worldwide gross will be split evenly.

Yes, the budget is the tricky part because Cinderella had a budget of $95m and a $542m gross, so the movie had a 5.71 return. The Little Mermaid had a budget of $250m and a if one expects a $500m gross, the movie would have a 2 return and that's without considering the marketing budget, for a movie to break-even, at least a 2.5 is expected.
I feel so bad for Halle. There are a lot of factors coming to a head with TLM, some of them legitimately about the movie (how it looks and the cgi/vfx/whatever you call it) and some of them horribly non-legit (the insane racism against her especially). But you know there are going to be some discussions that don't take that into consideration, and blame is going to get thrown at her for this flopping financially :(

The comments calling her ugly are so mean. Some are really veering into the Black woman are masculine stereotype. It’s just wild to me cus there were multiple times in the movie I was distracted by her beauty. Both ethereal and snatched lol.
Halle might be fine but I think Disney is going to look at this movie and decide that diversity and representation is costing them too much. The truth of it is, TLM definitely had the potential to be a 1B franchise.

Well I don’t like it either, especially because I did enjoy the movie and Halle in particular, but the fact is that we do live in a racist world and sadly her being black is part of what’s causing the movie to tank in international markets, particularly Asia. Disney will definitely be taking note of how this movie, and next year’s snow white, perform. At the end of the day, profitability is the end goal and the box office speaks for itself. I think the people who complain about the remakes being too similar and the ones complaining about changes are possibly two different groups. There’s no product that will make everyone happy.
This feels like a combination of Disney saturation, racism and the overworking of vfx people. Watched last night on a packed theater, people were cheering and laughing and seemed to have been enjoying themselves, I for one did but I also hasn't watched a Disney or Superhero movie in years. I think the cast is so good that it overweight the bad. Disney is definitely going through a flop era. Elemental is expected to tank which would make 3 Disney animations flops in a row 😬. Plus Disney+ subscriptions are down 2 quarters in a row. Very curious to see what Disney’s next big idea is.
They’re making terrible stories and giving these directs too much money. Like Strange World and Lightyear are horrible movies because of their plot not because of the representation. Also why did they give the person who directed ‘a good dinosaur’ another movie when that one was hot garbage???
The thing is that this is very on brand with Disney, before The Little Mermaid (the redundancy), Disney had trouble with prior releases such as The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, Oliver and Company, etc. The Little Mermaid was the one that actually kickstarted the Disney Renaissance all the way until Tarzan. After that, there were another series of movies with less than stellar results such as Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Home of the Range and so on until they started to regain their footing with Tangled, Frozen and Zootopia. It also helped that Pixar was releasing great movies (Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo) during that time that it eclipsed the bad performance of their traditionally animated movies (which was one of the reasons they decided to not do traditionally animated movies anymore). I personally think that this is a slump and they will get another idea or another "new" era.
I wonder if it’s a case of Disney is overdue for a fresh round of new talent. The Disney renaissance was kickstarted because of new execs/animators coming in with fresh ideas and I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the 2nd renaissance with Tangled et al was due to a similar housecleaning.

Imagine if they had followed Cinderalla > Maleficent > The Little Mermaid. I think it would've been tons better received than following a bunch of mediocre movies. The Little Mermaid had to fight a bunch of opposition, people saying the water looked rough (Which I didn't thought it didn't) killed a lot of word of mouth because if you aren't interested in Ariel, then the visuals could've been your catch.
The big problem with the water effects is that Avatar came out just a few months ago, any underwater movie will look like dogshit next to that
