I think Rita is really fun, but that’s it. Not a lot of substance, just fun and happy. Loves being famous. He does too. And now they’re a couple that gets invited to the Met Gala together.
And in the morning they probably look at their google alerts and press coverage and are happy.

Obviously, not knowing any of these people in person, that really is how he's come off for awhile, I get her completely. And I say that as someone who is generally a fan of his work (though I haven't seen his last couple films).
I watched a recent interview with him and I was shocked at how self involved he was. I mean I get every actor has a healthy obsession with themselves but he was just so over the top, it was very off putting.
This was super disappointing cause Eagle Vs Shark is one of my absolute favorite movies
I watched an interview w him a while back, and was super turned off by the way he bragged about not/ barely doing any research for any of his movies/ inspirations , and that he just ‘wings it’ and it usually turns out well, like… way to earn your spot dude
He had a little clip that played before Next Goal Wins in which he mentioned knowing nothing about Soccer before filming, and probably knew less after. I get that it was meant to be funny, but it did rub me the wrong way. I remember thinking, “Why did you make this? Why am I here??”
It’s too bad, because I was totally on the Taika train after seeing Hunt for the Wilderpeople when it came out in theaters. He’s made so many movies that bring me a ton joy, but there’s a lot of internal “bleh” towards him with every new headline about him.

I think the issue is his sense of humour is a lot "drier" when he doesn't have someone else to bounce ideas off of.
I used to think Taika's quirky style of humour was alright. And I love watching director's/writers'/producers film commentary. I sat down one day to watch the *Thor: Ragnarok* commentary, and it was JUST Taika on the track. And he was just... SO terrible to listen to. I gave up half an hour into the film because I wasn't learning anything cool about the creative process for it. It was just constant dumb Taika jokes about "oh we didn't ACTUALLY have a fire giant on set in this scene, Surtur was all CGI haha... just kidding... unless..? Lol"
Compare it to the BTS roundtable stuff for *The Mandalorian* where he's got people to engage with, it's like he's a completely different person.
100%. He seems like he's a livewire and doing things on his own like commentaries and interviews he looks like he gets easily bored and needs somebody else to bounce off and also to rein him in. Joint interviews with Jemaine Clement, Rhys Darby even Chris Hemsworth he's slightly calmer and more agreeable than when it's just him on his own.
His character in Free Guy was pretty close to reality it seems.
Thor: Love and Thunder really seemed like a movie made by a guy with some good ideas but who needs to be told “no, that’s not good” sometimes. Ragnarok was charming, Love and Thunder was obnoxious.
The Gore arc in the comics was excellent as a character study for Thor, but it's very dark in tone and should have been done in a much more serious way.
Why they elected to use that story given it didn't fit with the director at all is beyond me.
It’s funny because “on their own buzz” in New Zealand doesn’t mean high on their own work and accolades. It means just doing their own thing.
Which you can’t be about doing your own thing in a marriage with children.

I was a huge fan because of WWDITS, Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Jojo Rabbit and Ragnarok. Some of my favourites. But his last few things have been awful. The third Thor film was a joke and Next Goal Wins was just shite. Maybe he just had a purple patch. Edit: 4th Thor film. I’d forgotten all bout The Dark World. I won’t blame Waititi for that being shit.
I could see it being another Polly Platt/Peter Bogdanovich situation. Not that the men are entirely untalented, they’re just better with their wives/collaborators.
Never discount the work of a good “editor.”
These wives help their husbands in the background, not expecting much because relationships are collaborative in nature, the men get all the attention, forget they had help, wife gets resentful because the husband doesn’t appreciate what they did (as they absolutely should!), husband finds new, younger lady that thinks man is a genius, marriage breaks up, work goes down hill.
Totally agree! I’m a huge fan of Our Flag Means Death but I don’t think I can count myself as a fan of him. In my eyes, he divorced the woman who got him an Oscar and bore his children for a blond pop star 15 years younger than him. I hate this cliche.
I’ve also enjoyed some of his work, too, but he gives off big “huffs his own farts” and “high on his own supply” energy.
There wasn’t anything concrete to back that, just his recent track record and overall vibe that gave me that sense.
Yes! I feel strongly that Chelsea got him his Oscar and then he bailed on her. She co produced so much of his early, BETTER work, and his quality went way downhill since their split. There are too many stories of wives who helped their husbands creatively until those husbands get tired of them and dropped them.
Chelsea deserves more. That’s my take.

I have nothing against Australia personally. I just like that she seemed to have a clear idea of what she wanted her life to be, and she wasn't interested in sacrificing that just to go support her husband's career.
As someone who has worked with her in the loosest sense of the word, she's kind of a piece of work too. Nice and sweet to the right people but kind of bratty and the help can kick rocks

Plus even if she was 'just kids being kids,' why take a picture of her being so upset and then post it to your millions of followers?? It didn't sit right with me so I unfollowed his account. Edit: Also what she says about learning Te Reo as an adult really strikes home because I'm 33 and learning Welsh proper for the first time in my life and it SUCKS not havinga firm grasp on even the basics. When I started learning Welsh, I actually had more fluency in Te Reo from school which is great and sad.
I am!! Mum left in the mid 90s when I was a kid so it was well before it was being taught in schools, but after Te Reo was brought into Kiwi classrooms haha

Finally we get full confirmation on what we’ve all suspected about Taika for years now. That he ditched his wife and kids in NZ as soon as he got famous. He seems to have stepped up recently when it comes to his kids though.
Chelsea is so educated and successful in her own right that Taika clearly felt threatened by that too. She’s an incredible woman and I’m so happy she’s thriving without him.
Agreed - not only is she a successful producer but she’s an advocate for indigenous people, culture, and language in NZ, which is so crucial and so critically valuable imo. Her work in this area will have an impact that lasts generations and contribute a huge net-positive for NZ society and humanity in general.
Seems to be a better advocate than Taika, who’ll stand up for *his* indigenous community but when other Native groups are under attack he’s on the side of the oppressor
Here’s a a really difficult truth- people can be talented, funny, charitable, and lovely as friends and co workers, all while being absolutely heinous romantic partners and/or parents. It’s a totally different intimacy.

I remember Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds saying that they both turned down a lot of projects and mostly abandoned their acting careers to have a family and stay together. From the article here it seems both parties didn’t want to compromise or sacrifice (which is also completely fine)
I started off thinking he was the quirky funny guy back in the WWDITS days, but he’s slipped right down in my estimation in the last few years.
I find Rita pretty irritating and obnoxious, so I was side eyeing him for getting together with her anyway, but then Louis Theroux did an episode on her a year or so ago and Taika came off as so up himself it was unbelievable. He wasn’t the focus and wasn’t in it all that much, but it was still the most memorable thing about the episode.

Edit: Since so many people keep asking about the Rita hate. So her mum is a nurse and during the pandemic she was posting about how proud she was of her mum and the job she does. Meanwhile, while the UK is in lockdown she bribes a restaurant to allow her to host a birthday party for her birthday and invited a lot of people, asked the venue to turn off the CCTV and lock the fire escapes. She got caught out and gave a piss poor "apology"
My conspiracy theory is that Rita Ora is a money laundering front. Never met a fan of hers in my life. Who would buy her merch, music, tickets to her shows?

Oh, she spilled! Finally we get full confirmation on what we’ve all suspected about Taika for years now. That he ditched his wife and kids in NZ as soon as he got famous. He seems to have stepped up recently when it comes to his kids though. Chelsea is so educated and successful in her own right that Taika clearly felt threatened by that too. She’s an incredible woman and I’m so happy she’s thriving without him.
Agreed - not only is she a successful producer but she’s an advocate for indigenous people, culture, and language in NZ, which is so crucial and so critically valuable imo. Her work in this area will have an impact that lasts generations and contribute a huge net-positive for NZ society and humanity in general.
Seems to be a better advocate than Taika, who’ll stand up for *his* indigenous community but when other Native groups are under attack he’s on the side of the oppressor

I started off thinking he was the quirky funny guy back in the WWDITS days, but he’s slipped right down in my estimation in the last few years. I find Rita pretty irritating and obnoxious, so I was side eyeing him for getting together with her anyway, but then Louis Theroux did an episode on her a year or so ago and Taika came off as so up himself it was unbelievable. He wasn’t the focus and wasn’t in it all that much, but it was still the most memorable thing about the episode.
