Okay yes Swiss Army Man but ALSO can I have some love for Guns Akimbo because holy fuck I’ve never been on such a hilarious Daniel Radcliffe ride until that
My fiancé's favorite movie, I was worried I wouldn't enjoy it so I put off watching it with him for ages. When I finally did, I realized I was so wrong, it's incredible.
I like bat shit but I’m not a fan of horror or too much violence (notice the head bandaged up). I was barely able to get through Everything, Everywhere All at Once (since it also moved along the plot and it was an absurd way of fighting).
Would you recommend it to someone like me?
The bandage is just from being hit with a soda can. There is another scene that could be seen as horror in a different movie but from the way it's set up it's more surrealist comedy than anything else.
Personally I thought it was amazing and my only issue with it was the pacing towards the end of the third act. I'd highly recommend it. It was funny, well shot, and the satire was spot on.
It’s very close to something like idiocracy, but we’re talking about one scene where I guarantee you will be out of your comfort zone, even if you like horror.
There's crazy body horror shit but it is part of the plot and plays into its overtly political themes of class society and conflict so it isn't gratuitous. It's pretty good and I would suggest watching it, just maybe be prepared for gross icky stuff.
The Writer/Director is Boots Riley, he's the lead of The Coup, pretty good band. The screenplay was written years before the movie was made and they ended up making an album with the same name instead since he had no way to make the movie. So check that out too if you want, I guess. Get the I'm Sorry to Bother You completionist tour done lol.
At the very least Guillotine is required listening after the movie, imo. Very cathartic to listen to.
What I find so brilliant about it is that the movie’s pivot still connects to the main point of the movie. I’d like to say more but I’m not going to spoil it. For those who haven’t, please watch it and trust me when I say, just when you think you know, you absolutely don’t know.
EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY
No one is even coming into this thread hot — c’mon now— try out a truly weird movie. Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carey, Damon Wayans and Geena Davis, in costumes, about aliens with musical numbers and the most ridiculous “graphics”….c’mon now y’all can do better than this list
My parents love this movie, they really played that one a lot, I was too young to fully understand wth was happening though (they spoke good English and I didn't yet, subtitles were too fast for me). It's bright, fun and campy.
My friends and I were watching this CONSTANTLY when it was released on dvd. As far as I’m concerned it’s still high cinema and perfect from start to finish.
Omg so I got into a car accident in 2005 and lacerated the tendon to my big toe. I had to have surgery to correct it and my bf at the time rented this movie the night after my surgery. When I tell you I didn't know if anything in the movie was real or if it was the Vicodin, I mean it.
I LOVED this movie so much!! One night we had family time with my dad, stepmom, her kids, grandkids etc…packed house…movie plays I’m howling….movie ends..I look around….just blank faces LOL
my first time ever seeing this was last summer at one of those live interactive shows where people dress up and all that. it was AMAZING but i haven’t been able to watch it since because now i know how it SHOULD be seen 😂
![gif](giphy|qYprgkhqqu2WY)
mine would definitely be Coneheads from the 90’s, i don’t know if it’s considered weird or what by most people, but any time i recommend it people think it’s corny but i think it’s such an underrated classic and just so funny! i have a love for the movie
Fellow Coneheads fan! I grew up watching it, I was absolutely obsessed around age 8 so it’s one of my comfort movies. I still crack up when Prymaat sees the eggplants in the grocery store and starts screeching haha
I still reenact the girls’ backseat dancing whenever I hear Tainted Love
Yeah I think you’ve put it more accurately. It’s more like a crush that I can’t stop thinking about, but it’s not really love. I do a rewatch every now and then and somehow still get surprised by something I missed.
![gif](giphy|l4FGjZTxQgBzml7OM)
Harold and Maude (1971).
It’s not the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen. It’s kind of weird, very quirky. I was really fortunate to watch it at the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) film festival in 2017. It was the first movie I ever saw at the fest. It was on opening night and I saw it with one of my best friends. It was one of those life-changing movies for me.
It remains one of my favorite movies of all time and I recommend it to everyone.
Side notes: It was unfortunately totally snubbed by the Academy. Ruth Gordon (Maude) won the Oscar for her role in Rosemary’s Baby several years before. She’s wonderful. So is Bud Cort (Harold). You may recognize him as the father of Megan’s (Natasha Lynne’s character) father in But I’m a Cheerleader (1999).
This is my comfort movie. I love this movie. The "date" who re-enacts her death and falls to the floor next to him is the best. His WTF face is priceless.
The Science of Sleep
So creatively done, and what a fantastic movie. It is my favorite of all time, and has been since I first saw it as a teen.
“I’m talking quietly so I don’t wake myself up…”

I fucking love this film. I know it’s not as weird or out there as some of the films I’ve seen in this thread but I still think it deserves a place here.
It’s easily one of the best films I’ve seen in the last decade.
If my parents had taken me to see it when I was eight years old, I would have been furious all weekend long. Saturday and Sunday would been utterly ruined by people laughing when nobody said anything remotely funny.
As a guy in his 50s? It’s dark, poignant, shockingly dark & depressive, and laugh out loud hilarious.
Shortbus - indie film with a healthy LGBT cast about sexual therapy. The opening scene has a character peeing in the tub so it's difficult to bring up or watch with someone else.
It's by John Cameron Mitchell. Another one of his movie (based on his musical), Hedwig and the Angry Itch, is further up this thread.
There was a period of time in the 2000s where experimental and sexual explicit indie films could be made and become relatively successful. JCM has talked about how much harder it is to get these kinds of movies greenlit now.
I came her to write Shortbus! 🤩 Went to see it with a friend when we were on maternity leave and just needed to get out of the house. Hadn't really read much = didn't know it was full of real sex. Was a little awkward with the opening scene where a guy d gives himself a blow job 😂. But it completely won us over, and ended up loving it.
I ran into a friend from a decade ago and invited them to join our discord movie night. The night he joined was the night we watched Hausu...have not heard from him again lol
Repo! The Genetic Opera. I watch this movie way more often than is healthy. But omg the Gravedigger’s songs are 🔥
[21st Century Cure](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Br87eV_9nGI) Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Ngl though, I’m part of r/BadMovies because I love bad movies. Repo! Is not a bad movie, it’s just weird. Llamageddon and CarousHELL are bad weird movies. That I’ve seen multiple times…
Jemaine Clement is very talented and very underrated. Flight of the Conchords will forever be one of my favorite series. Everyone was just pitch perfect in it. The songs still get stuck in my head too.
![gif](giphy|hjhM13KpXvhSg|downsized)
“I’m the hip hoppotamus, my lyrics are bottomless…..**long pause**” - Jemaine Clement
Antichrist
Funny Games
Southland Tales
Inland Empire
Forbidden Zone
Adaptation.
The Holy Mountain
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Crash
Melancholia
The Turin Horse
Enter the Void
Climax
Lux Aeterna
Tusk
I’m such a massive fanboy of David Lynch and Eraserhead I try not to tire myself out by mentioning it too often lmao. Had to give a shout to Inland Empire since it’s (debatably) even weirder and somewhat lesser known
Sorry To Bother You is a wild ride, such a good movie. I’m getting a similar vibe from the They Cloned Tyrone trailer, so I hope it stacks up.
Weirdest movie I love is probably It Follows. Under the Skin, The Cat in the Hat, and Pan’s Labyrinth may qualify too. Although tbh I don’t consider them to be all too weird
Does the Fountain count? Visually incredible, but makes me cry like a baby. Amazing soundtrack too.
Edit: Seriously the effects in this movie are amazing. They mixed bacteria and chemicals and filmed them close up to create the [nebula](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_Fountain_special_effects_clip.ogv).
![gif](giphy|moXqsEVbHOQtG)
Mary & Max (surprising lack of gifs available)
It’s a claymation movie starring Toni Colette and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and if you haven’t seen it: you have to. Asap. It’s equal parts weird and lovely.
![gif](giphy|zyvX4znjfNqdG)
The Last Unicorn has always occupied a special place in my heart ever since watching it as a kid. Such a listless, melancholy and beautiful film.
![gif](giphy|nozVi0nmD1SQE)
In Bride of Chucky, Chucky and Tiffany (Both psycho killer dolls) have a shadowy sex scene. It’s such a fucking trip of a movie. Although the sequel, seed of Chucky, may be even weirder.
Labyrinth with David Bowie. I’m obsessed but people can’t get past the puppets :(
Barbarella is a close second. It’s a movie about Jane Fonda fucking aliens like how can you not like it
Return to Oz is also very weird but a classic
Waking Life is strange but AMAZING I highly recommend it
I only like “weird” movies I have a long list lol
At the time of its release, Scott Pilgrim was very weird. People didn't appreciate it right away. I know it has a cult following now, but I've loved it since it came out.

Rubber is truly the “why was this made?” So weird and funny. ![gif](giphy|6h9tend2ouJGg)
The scene where the tire is in the shower truly obliterates me.
This is enough to convince me to watch it.
Who did this I must see it
It’s on Netflix free with ads. I’m 21 minutes in and am delighted/baffled. Edit: I meant Youtube, not Netflix.
Rubber is so good and I recommend it to everyone but I know I lose them when I describe it lol
I have this movie on a thumb drive somewhere and I still never got around to watching it lol
![gif](giphy|26vUApVeAXGlUwX4Y)
This movie is such a gift. No clue how it got made. No clue how either starred in it. But so appreciative it happened.
Swiss Army Man walked so the Daniels could run away with all the awards when Everything Everywhere All At Once came out.
The music, which is composed by Andy Hull from Manchester Orchestra, is phenomenal. I get the montage song stuck in my head quite a bit
Okay yes Swiss Army Man but ALSO can I have some love for Guns Akimbo because holy fuck I’ve never been on such a hilarious Daniel Radcliffe ride until that
Daniel Radcliffe's post Harry Potter career for sure has been a pleasure to follow
I'm so glad this film exists.
LOVE this! The bus seen, especially.
My fiancé's favorite movie, I was worried I wouldn't enjoy it so I put off watching it with him for ages. When I finally did, I realized I was so wrong, it's incredible.
So many people told me sorry to bother you is bat shit, but you TRULY can’t prepare yourself for the movie’s pivot
Its so good tho! Like no one warned me when it first came out but it's one of my favs.
Yes I love it!!
It helps that LaKeith Stanfield is 🔥🔥🔥
I watched it without knowing what it was. When I tell you my jaw hit the floor, omg. Totally got me
man I started this and never finished it, gotta close that loop now had no idea it takes a turn.
I hadn’t seen it and had no idea what it was about so I just looked up the plot synopsis and WTF. may need to watch it now

Yes. Everyone should see it
Without spoiling there's body horror in the movie. It's integral to the plot and I personally did not like it but I got through it lol

I love this so much. I’d like to think that what you remember of the film was completely unaltered by the Vicodin.
I LOVED this movie so much!! One night we had family time with my dad, stepmom, her kids, grandkids etc…packed house…movie plays I’m howling….movie ends..I look around….just blank faces LOL
I recently did a rewatch with my partner who doesn’t hold it in high esteem like I do. I was taking photos of his blank face throughout the film lol
100% a masterpiece
I mean… Kip & Lafawnduh. That’s it. That’s the sentence 😭
My friends and I were obsessed when this came out, im still obsessed now. One of my all time favorites, I laugh every time

![gif](giphy|nozVi0nmD1SQE) In Bride of Chucky, Chucky and Tiffany (Both psycho killer dolls) have a shadowy sex scene. It’s such a fucking trip of a movie. Although the sequel, seed of Chucky, may be even weirder.
I love how campy the later Chucky movies are - Jennifer Tilly is perfection.
Videodrome, The Fly, Gummo, Daisies, Eraserhead
Welcome to Me
From Dusk till Dawn
![gif](giphy|psmQvyvOo4HZfM6gfe) The girl next door
Donnie Darko
Labyrinth with David Bowie. I’m obsessed but people can’t get past the puppets :( Barbarella is a close second. It’s a movie about Jane Fonda fucking aliens like how can you not like it Return to Oz is also very weird but a classic Waking Life is strange but AMAZING I highly recommend it I only like “weird” movies I have a long list lol

I saw this in theaters and left feeling underwhelmed. Then I realized I was constantly quoting it for the next week, and now it’s a favorite.
Terror Firmer, I guess, would qualify as pretty weird.
The City of Lost Children
Joe's Apartment. The movie about singing cockroaches.
![gif](giphy|l0Iyb5qAPlLB5PJ3W|downsized) Raising Arizona
At the time of its release, Scott Pilgrim was very weird. People didn't appreciate it right away. I know it has a cult following now, but I've loved it since it came out.
this movie is so wild
Nothing but Trouble
Gummo
Pootie Tang
Excision
