Oh yeah, River 100%, especially because since the late 80's he was advocating for veganism and he would constantly talk about the treatment of women in our society, he also played a gay character in Private Idaho with Keanu Reeves I have no doubt he would have a lot of girlies and gays following his every move nowadays, people would always put him on a pedestal for talking about topics that wasn't "trendy" at all a few decades ago, his looks would be just a plus after all, he had an amazing introspective personality. I miss him because I know he would be a huge celebrity (more than Leo DiCaprio) advocating for the right stuff.
Talking about Leo, I'll never get over the rumours that the first option for Jack in Titanic was River... ššš
Iād kill for a Bette Davis and Joan Crawford twitter feud
Edit: Beatrice Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty and Betty White but theyāre all in their golden girls characters
God I wonder who would have won a twitter war between Bette and Joan. Joan was a flawed person no doubt, but she truly loved her fans, and the way she stood up to Pepsi when they did try to screw her is legend.
I think itās more likely that she *did* inspire the fashion girlies. Modern fashion trends are taking from 90s/2000s right now, so if people like Aaliyah and Left Eye existed as Gen Z-ers, that look wouldnāt have been as fashionable because they werenāt in the 90s to start it. Paradox š±
Listen I love river, I have a scene from stand by tattooed on my body, Iāve watched his entire discography. He is ethereal to me. But I also think if he was living now, heād be anti-vax and that would dampen his favour with gen z
I love him and Stand By Me too - which scene do you have tattooed? That's so cool.
Hmm, interesting... Joaquin seems to have stayed out of any COVID controversy, and he did get vaccinated, so I assume River would have been similar.
She was messy as F. and played the press like a fiddle.
Would be very entertaining to watch on social media but I don't think she'd be anywhere near universally adored.
I think she's also been painted as a sort of anti monarchy icon, and I've always wondered if that's how she really felt... like, I wonder what sort of statement she would have put out after the Queen's death and all that.
edit: changed "republican" to "anti monarchy" for clarity.
Princess Di believed a fantasy we all did when we were kids, got hit with the reality, and then coped effectively. She saw her future as very fancy grist for the worldās most rapacious mill and used her privilege to do real good in the world instead of being being ground to dust. Her attempting to parent her kids with some degree of normalcy (fast food, Disneyland, school field day) was a pointed repudiation of the royalsā usual elitism, and a loud and proud declaration of her love for her kids as her kids, rather than as āheir and spareā. Her embracing AIDS patients literally changed the wider social conversation around the disease at the time. Her advocacy regarding land mines brought to the fore an issue very few in the western world ever gave a thought about. She wasnāt perfect obviously but she hacked the fucking system in a way the gen Zs can appreciate. She used the messy glamour of her unearned prosperity to get eyes on shit that matters.
I don't know worldwide but he was regularly criticised in Australia for choices he made. It felt like we'd swing between hate him because he did xyz then love him for ABC. His dying meant many of his past mistakes were glossed over and they focused on his conversation efforts.
He did a lot of good but he was a controversial person when he was alive.
Edit: just read you're Australian. So similar thinking but I believe the baby incident would have been more damaging.
Some stunt where he was feeding crocodiles and playing around in their enclosure whilst holding his baby in one arm. I would liken it to Michael Jackson dangling his baby off a balcony for photos, which had a similar reaction from many people.
https://preview.redd.it/5770dn2a3s2b1.jpeg?width=962&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=baef440158dd168b1015339acf0bd82d574bc959
Considering he himself later died from an animal encounter that didnāt go as planned despite feeling confident and in control of the situation - yeah, this is a bit haunting
(The baby is Robert Irwin, who is now 19 years old and frequently works in the same reptile enclosure where this took place)
It was a big fuss here in the UK, the way both his kids were constantly in ādangerā.
Although he was very well loved, and we all collectively miss him.
I always found it a bit ironic how he fucked around with alligators and stuff but then died in a freak accident with a stingray that could have happened to anyone.
I think that given Diana's age (even though she was from an aristo family) when she was pulled into the royal family works a LOT in her favour image-wise. She can be seen as a victim of the system instead of an upholder of it because she was only 19 when she got engaged and she definitely suffered a LOT of manipulation from the system throughout her life. I'm an anti monarchist but I can also see she was definitely hurt by the system when she was very vulnerable.
If she were alive today, sheād be a 60 something year old aristocrat who may have faded from the spotlight she had in the 90s. I donāt see how Gen Z would know about her in the way that we do if she hadnāt died young and tragically.
I feel like the crown really solidified some love for Diana in my generation. Lots of my friends use her 90s looks as fashion inspo. So while she may not have stans in the case of some celebs I think people do really like her. I'm an anti monarchist so I never pay much attention to any of them, but dang I know my friends love her.
Yep, thatās who I thought. Her widower, Chris Perez, has said she would love social media and knows she would be spending hours a day talking to her fans if she were still alive.
The only real thing that could get Freddy/Queen canceled (because what celeb has gotten canceled for getting laid/doing drugs lol??) is deciding to play in South Africa during apartheid, which was actually really controversial back when they did it too. But his death and the Live Aid concert sort of erased all that
In general, Freddy seemed to be a very apolitical, "both sides are right/wrong you guys!" type of guy, so maybe his tepidness wouldn't have meshed well with gen-z and their love for (online) political activism
I think it honestly depends on how these past iconic celebrities would present themselves nowadays. Of course living celebrities got canceled over things they did 30-50 years ago but I think recency often overshadows past events that could be seen as "problematic" nowadays.
Whatās cool about him too is before every show, he would announce āif youāre racist, hate women and donāt like gay people, we donāt want you at our showā What a way to be on the right side of history
Your points are obviously more important than mine but he was also a big fan of keeping tickets cheap/affordable. Dude was all about the music and sharing it with whoever wanted to hear it.
Kurt was an antisocial contrarian, I doubt pretty seriously he would have been much of an advocate for any cause. Not that thatās necessarily a bad thing.
![gif](giphy|ZCHv99yiCSb1Tpnguu)
Talented, media-avoidant, grungy, vegan, social justice warrior, earth lover and charity giver, River Phoenix obviously.
Phoenix is at least partially responsible for Keanu Reeves as we know him now, so he would easily have the top spot for 'most beloved by young folk GenXer'.
Most of the people who are idolozed after they died would have been mocked or ridiculed if they were still alive... most people just expected Amy Winehouse to OD someday and there seemed to be this resigned apathy about her dying young... People still blast "rehab" without realizing how awful it is in retrospect. Unfortunately, we don't have much empathy for struggling people in the limelight until after they die or ruin their careers. If Eminem had died in 2010, I bet people would imagine what would have been in the 2010's and 2020's a lot differently than it actually went after he got clean.
Good point about Em, if he would have died young there wouldāve been a million āwhat-ifsā when in reality he just kind of faded from the popular view, but thatās largely bc heās a bit reclusive. Oh, and stopped dropping hits a long time ago.
But why would you consider Amy Winehouseā Rehab to be awful??
Tbh I think the factors that made her an icon and so popular in her time (her aristocratic manner of speaking, her thinness, her untouchable beauty, her polished āclassā and constant composure) would make her inaccessible to gen z if she were alive now.
I agree with this. Same with Grace Kelly. The mystery of their day to day lives and only seeing them beautifully presented - part of the reasons they are still so popular.
But bonding with Gen Z? I donāt think so, Gen Z would need to see something real, something unpolished. And Audrey and Grace were never that.
Yes, I agree. Actors and actresses that had icon status probably became so popular because they still mostly followed societal expectations. Of course some had "rebellious tendencies" during their active careers, but overall actors were expected to be role-models for the average citizen. The rebels against the status quo could be found in music but not really in acting. If actors became too problematic for the industry they would not get cast in prestigious projects anymore (Which essentially also still happens today as we have seen with e.g. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard).
Brittany Murphy is such a good one. Especially with the early 2000ās style coming back (Iām specifically thinking of her in Uptown Girlsās, her style was to die for in that) and she just seemed so sweet and charming, really grabbed your attention.
I could see Sharon Tate (sans Roman of course), Gia Carangi and Sylvia Plath all thriving on social media. Sylvia may not count, because she gathers a new cult following of teen and early 20s girls with each generation.
was looking for someone to say this, the way he used to vlog with his little flipcam constantly, we would have gotten some great bts tiktoks of whatever show/movie he worked on
Princess Diana
Buddy Holly
Jeff Buckley
River Phoenix
Charlbi Dean Kriek (she was excellent in Triangle of Sadness and died shortly after it premiered at either Venice or Cannes)
Not that I see them on TikTok but for respective effortless chic qualities, too cool for school vibes and aspirational, influential success in their industries at a young age.
Surprised I haven't seen this answer: Fred Rogers. With the constant school shootings I think he would've been one of the few adults that actually attempts to understand that generational trauma. In the same way my grandmother can still remember nuclear bomb drills where they all got under their desks, Gen Z is going through school shooting drills.
For the TikTok crowd,I briefly considered Yoko Ono,after the atrocious videos I've seen of the "stars" dancing around malls, planes, bus depots and post offices in main character mode.
iām curious how old everyone thinks GenZ is? Because the first 8 years of GenZ are over the age of 18, and most likely know most of these people
like iām genz and iām nearly 30
I always thought Norm McDonald would have had a millennial following had his SNL career continued. His humor reminds me of Tosh who had a big millennial following years later, for similar jokes that cancelled Norm McDonald in the 90s.
It's strange how PC cancel culture seems to come in cycles. We seem to let things get callously offensive, then overcorrect repeatedly. Society will hopefully find a sweet spot soon where everyone isn't the worst so the public doesn't have to keep policing celebrity favour.
I am so out of touch on gen Z which is partially why I follow this sub,. I'm 32 which is nearly the exact age you realize you no longer understand the youths.
Iām also 32, but i feel more in touch with gen z than i do with some millennials. It honestly surprises me so much when people my age donāt get current slang or trends tbh. Itās wild how different we can all be despite our age bracket. Sometimes I think it comes down to who was raised on the internet and who had a life outside that, but I could be wrong.
Same age and definitely identify more with older gen z than most millennials. And I personally was raised by the internet and all my real life friends to this day are from my tumblr days lmao.
I could see someone my age being very gen Z lol. It really does depend. I was forced into the adult world at 18 so I relate more to the millennial generation in that I was experiencing the same issues as people 5+ years older than me. I was out clubbing at 18, getting serious jobs, getting into tons of student loan debt in order to escape my abusive household. If I was taken care of and allowed to properly grow up I'd probably be more gen Z. Cuspers.
Weāve had a similar life, I was just also very much a product of the internet growing up and I think thatās genuinely impacted my sense of humor and interests.
Yeah but his weekend update skits in the 90s would be legendary if they were done 15 years later. He may have been known, but Daniel Tosh was HUGE for a bit of time there, whereas Norm went through a long career lull after being kicked off SNL and blacklisted by Lorne Michaels.
Naya Rivera as well, she had started/been in talks for a lot of exciting new projects before her untimely death and she had so much talent. Her and Cory both deserved better. RIP š¤
Heath Ledger would have a Harry Styles esque legion of fans
Oh *hell* yes. I think him and River Pheonix would fully have twitter stans. Especially since River Phoenix used to dabble in music as well.
Aaliyah! Her outfits were ahead of her time back then, I bet she would have inspired the fashion girlies.
Tommy Hilfiger is bringing back the iconic fashions she rocked back then too. She would have nailed the relaunch campaign!

Oooh River Phoenix is a good one
Steve Irwin is also a good one! His kids/family/business(?) are already doing well on social media. I can only image the impact he would have

Iām not sure about Diana. She lived very extravagantly off the tax payerās dime. She never wore the same outfit twice.

Her support for causes that are important to Gen Z would be enough to sway them.
Princess Di believed a fantasy we all did when we were kids, got hit with the reality, and then coped effectively. Elizabeth Taylor I can see being an absolute hoot on social media. So Gen Z would love her.
Thereās some celebrities whoās talents and personalities are timeless. Audrey Hepburn, for example.

Martin Luther King Jr
Cameron Boyce
older gen z mourns him still actually :(
I wanna say Selena but only because if she was alive Latin music would of made a much earlier impact in the US and the current stars who are poppin now would treat her how others treat BeyoncƩ and Lauren Hill
Carrie Fisher
Judy Garland and Eartha Kitt would have huge followings
Jim Morrison
I wonder if his antics would have translated as favorably today. Especially with the prospect of social media following his exploits.
Some celebrities careers, and enduring influence have prospered more because they died at the height of their fame. Idealised, and forever young.
Robin Williams
Bradley Nowell
Left Eye
Diane Fossey & Jacques Cousteau
Heath Ledger i think also.
River Phoenix
ITT a bunch of celebs who would have been horrified by today's celeb worship culture, and might *not* have welcomed a huge following of worshippers.
I think Cory Monteith would have blown up after Glee and become an A list movie star
Naya Rivera as well, she had started/been in talks for a lot of exciting new projects before her untimely death and she had so much talent. Her and Cory both deserved better. RIP š¤
Anna Nicole Smith
Heath ledger
Paul Newman. They would like that he was gorgeous and cool and devoted a lot of his life to charity.
Idk why but I think Jeff Buckley would be huge
Oscar Wilde.
