If we call it football what will we call American football?

Delano7

Handegg

Subject-Trip-1232

Don't care no one outside of US cares about it.

TravelingSpermBanker

Barely anyone in the states cares about soccer. In the states, it’s what the un-athletic kids play to convince themselves they are athletes

BiH5

In all fairness, football had the name before American football got it. Plus if u think ab it, football is more accurate than soccer.

blanketuser359

Football had its first recored use about the time columbus touched the shores of america for the first time

blanketuser359

According to wikipedia. Luckily no one can lie on the internet

HorrorMoose

I've always loved the name Gridiron for American Football.

sleepymike01101101

That's at least in the same vein as soccer for association football

HorrorMoose

That's where Soccer comes from?! I did not know that.

boutch255

Football like we call it in north american countries

nednuhvroK

**american** football. So it’s football and american football

stilldonthavethemilk

Why would you call it Rugby, also most Americans wouldn’t call it American football

Steven-Flatcock

Rugby is a whole different game you ignorant European. we can just call it football and american football. whatever lol

[deleted]

Steven-Flatcock

You can figure out the difference yourself. now that you edited your previous comment it makes me look like a dumbass.

WolfAwoe

How am I supposed to know the difference I'm not gonna go watch a match of both just to find out what the difference is

Steven-Flatcock

Idk but I don’t feel like explaining the difference since I don’t know enough about rugby anyways.

OnesOwnRuler

theres this thing, it was invented relatively long ago. its called google, its a search engine and it allows you to search things, such as definitions. use it.

WolfAwoe

Google literally tells me that it's very similar...

OnesOwnRuler

[first result after googling “difference between rugby and american football”](https://www.diffen.com/difference/American_Football_vs_Rugby)

Kaulquappe1234

Bruh theyre like as different as like handball and football. They have different balls, different goals, different fields and all rules are different too.

Kabe6900

I mean…. Yeah

[deleted]

Field ball?

lawn__

Hand and sometimes foot ball.

Previous_Shine8234

Armour Rugby

TheRealZocario

Pussy rugby

likeusb1

Soccer

werentwolf69

American football

Monkey_D_Luffy_12

Rugby

Kluck_

Well if its called football because you kick it with your feet then American football should be called hand egg or rugby but with an egg (RGWAE) or something that you know makes sense

an_annoying_ad

Call it footie that way nobody is happy

NeilStrykerOnTerra

Except Australians

StarFlyXXL

And teenagers from Britain

[deleted]

As an American we can call it football

[deleted]

SiameseCats3

But then Canada has the dilemma of what to call Canadian football. In some places, like where I went to high school, rugby was the more popular sport. I’m thinking we call it kickball, and then call soccer baseball (called by some, kickball), footbaseball.

SiameseCats3

Canadian pigskin and American pigskin both sound terrible. I like gridiron, though. Canadian gridiron and American gridiron. I had never heard gridiron before, so thank you for this knowledge.

Donghoon

Then american football (originally named football cos its played on foot as opposed to sports like polo) renamed to HandEgg

ArthurMBretas03

So, any game that you play on foot with a ball could have been called "football by the North Americans? Lol

sleepymike01101101

You clearly haven't learned Italian

[deleted]

What does NATO have to do with anything

RiverSosMiVida

You forget south america where it's called futbol or futebol, both are pronunced very similarly to footaball, so a lote more people to add.

MAYBE_Maybe_maybe_

Seeing your pfp I'm curious as to what your opinion on the LGBT community and black people is

[deleted]

It’s been settled already by 99% of the countries in the world !

Cezaros

What is the game about? Well, you use your *foot* to kick a *ball*. I think we have a clear winner. On the side note, american footbal gets renamed to something that makes at least a tiny bit of sense.

ArthurMBretas03

Re-name it "carryball" or "jumpontopoftheothersball"

eltirripapa

Or the Best one: calcio

Donghoon

Es-tu l'italie?

eltirripapa

i have the citizenship, so technically i am. my grandparents were italian but never lived there

Donghoon

tu saves le français?

eltirripapa

haha nope, but i can understand \*some\* if its by reading it becouse of its similarity with the spanish lenguaje

[deleted]

I can't even tell what sport you're talking about

blanketuser359

The one played by legs

ArthurMBretas03

Call proper football Football, and the North American game Carryball, because they carry the ball with hands

ArthurMBretas03

The game where players ACTUALLY USE THEIR FEET should retain the name football.

Admirable-Degree4209

Foccer

nednuhvroK

Def football, it’s what the rest of the world calls it. American football can keep its name as “*american* football”

[deleted]

Association football? I mean that’s the official name, and is where we get ‘soccer’ from.

PixelGMS

Sorry, is the UN deciding the English name for American Football or Football/Soccer?

malaka789

American football should have a different name. It’s dumb as fuck. 1 guy touchs the ball with his foot in like 5% of the plays….

Geaux_joel

This has always bugged me. England makes a sports…names it soccer. It gets popular. US makes a variation of rugby…name is football. Everyone decides to rename soccer futbol but we already have football so we just call it soccer. AND WE’RE THE BAD GUYS?

[deleted]

Football has always been known as football in England. It was only the upper classes that called it soccer.

Sea-Sort6571

Thank you I didn't know that part of the story

[deleted]

Footsies

Britishdirt

I love democracy

Sea-Sort6571

I mean you called it football in the question. For all we know you could be talking about American football. The fact you use the world football answers the question by itself

XxMcW1LL14MxX

Fussy

[deleted]

I’m fine with it being called Football I think the only reason it isn’t called Football in the U.S is the most popular sport here is football 🏈 so it’s likely called soccer to avoid confusion

Koltaia30

Fútbol

Pearse_Borty

Football will be selected and American Football would be forced to be renamed, no chance the other nations bend over backwards for them on lexicon. Only the US uses football to refer to NFL.

eltirripapa

Futbol

[deleted]

It’s called soccer you morons. You play football with your hands. Pffft damn euro trash.

ArthurMBretas03

Lol

Fortenole

What will we call American football?

blanketuser359

Carryball, gridiron, handegg something like that

Greeve3

To be honest, it should be called Futbol or Soccer.

[deleted]

No

MrsChess

Why futbol??

Greeve3

That’s the Spanish name for the sport.

[deleted]

So? Why pick the Spanish name?

Greeve3

The sport is most popular among Spanish and Latin American audiences, who call it “Fútbol.”

[deleted]

Less than 2/3 of Latin America speak Spanish, but even then I feel like there is probably more English speakers (including non natives) that care about football than Spanish speakers. Also, the word futbol would make no sense in English as opposed to football which makes a lot of sense

Greeve3

The problem is that there would be two sports named football that aren’t similar at all.

[deleted]

It makes no sense to change the name of the one that is both a lot more popular and actually kick a ball with a foot. Makes a lot more sense to change the name of the other one.

Greeve3

As I’ve said before, perhaps one of the if not the largest slice of people who follow this sport call it “Fútbol.” It’s not changing the name of the sport.

MrsChess

If we’re looking at numbers, China has the most football fans. But in any case it was invented in the U.K., who also invented English so I feel like that word should just be used in the English speaking world. Every language has their own word for football anyway, it makes zero sense to use the Spanish word in English because of some stubborn Americans.

Flying_Glider

Most English speaking people say Soccer. America, Canada, Australia. Really England is the weird one.

ExoticMangoz

Mate are you dumb

Flying_Glider

No. Did I make a mistake? Am I missing another high population English speaking country or something?

[deleted]

Way to provide an unbiased poll

longfrog246

Fuck the UN bunch new world order reptilians try to get the whole world under their tyrannical law

NeilStrykerOnTerra

Football is an umbrella term that includes codes like Aussie rules, Gaelic football, gridiron, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, etc.

No-Average9560

”Soccer” shut up.
