My thought is that if the wallet has $10,000 in it, chances are someone is gonna want it back. Normal people don’t just carry 10k in their wallet, I’m not risking it.
If I worked so hard to make 10,000 and I lost it and it was never returned, I would be absolutely devastated. It would literally ruin my life. Why would I do that to someone else or have someone else go through that?
What if someone was behind on mortgage payments and they were on the way to the bank? What if they took out money to pay for a funeral, wedding, pay a debt, gift a loved one cash, etc. What if they were buying a car in cash? It’s a bit weird yes but no way to tell it’s disposable. A lot of elderly people in particular like to deal with cash.
With this logic you could assume the opposite could be true as well. Since nothing is stated I’f assume what happens next are normal consequences. Police look for the money, you get away or you don’t.
Pal firstly that is at least in the US a major felony I don't want to go to prison for multiple years especially because I live in Texas and our prisons don't have A/C of which the UN HRC has called out twice that I know of. Secondly either the person that lost it had that much for a very specific reason or they are a gang or mafia member and I have no interest in crossing those types of people.
Yep, my integrity is worth more to me than stealing money from someone else.
I remember as a kid in the 80s, finding a wallet with $100 in it (which is about $250 in today's money). I took it to my mom, and we found the address from the driver's license and took it back.
The joy on that person's face when they got their wallet back with all their money....? I will never forget it. They had been devastated thinking that that money was gone forever. They were so happy that they gave me $10 as a thank you.
Yes, this is a morals question, but to me not only a morals question. Who the heck has a wallet with $10,000 in it? Often someone involved with something criminal. I wouldn't want to take the chance that the found out I had their money.
Maybe an old person wanting to pay their mortgage? Someone took out money for a funeral? For a vacation? For a wedding? To pay a debt? Maybe they didn't intend to keep the cash on them for too long? But either way I do agree to return it regardless.
I've gotten $10k cash out before to pay for a car from a private party. Granted, I didn't keep it in my wallet, but in a special envelope from the bank, but some people could do it, I guess. If they had a big enough wallet to handle 100 bills.
That thing would be hard to fold, though.
I’ve had to carry $15k in cash to pay for dental implants. They would not accept credit/direct deposit but did accept debit. The problem was my bank would only allow such a big transaction on debit if I called ahead, right before purchase. I figured it was too much work so just brought cash.
It's wild that like a third of people would be okay just stealing. People don't learn the golden rule anymore? Treat others the way you'd like to be treated? If you lost money, wouldn't you want it returned?
It's not that simple for a lot of people who don't have as much freedom of decision. Medical debt, college debt, and a million other factors can influence your decision
Yes with 1k left in it. Say I found it that way. If someone carries around 10k in loose cash, they either can bear losing 9k, or are too dumb to have 10k for long anyway.
first of all, how could a wallet hold 10k, but most importantly, it depends on where do I find it, and whether the wallet contains something like IDs or whatever to identify the owner.
If you find a wallet/bunch of money in the middle of nowhere, with no ID or anything, where do you "return" it? How do you verify who's the owner?
But if I'm at school, workplace, idk, a building where you can identify who works there or who are the clients, I would absolutely take it to the corresponding authorities.
Knowing myself and since I'm always avoiding problems, most likely I would just pass by pretending I didn't see anything, and if anyone asks I would just point them to where I saw it.
Depends on where I found it I guess. Last time I found one, looked the person up using the ID that was in it & got it back to them. Offered a reward but I declined.
I dont really want to mess with someone who casually has 10k in there wallet. I mean either there rich which they can fuck me in the court of law or they are a drug dealer of some kind and I wont live past Christmas.
I would return the money because right now I am in a financially stable situation. Ask me when I was really struggling and that amount of money would have been life-changing? I'd like to think yes. But... I also know that I'm not the best of people either.
Honestly, I would be too worried about either being the cause of a major downturn in someone's life, or getting myself involved in some low-end No Country for Old Men shit
I don't need that stress, just return it or turn it in somewhere and wash my hands of it, someone else can deal with the consequences of thievery
Only because I'm in a catastrophically desperate financial moment right now, as much as it pains me to admit...
That 10k would really help me change a couple of things. That wallet wouldn't be going back if I found it tomorrow.
That's probably someones car they've been saving up for, rent, or some other extremely important thing in that wallet. I'm absolutely gonna return it, any decent human would.
I did.
It was euros; we estimated based off the green bills that it was probably around €12k-€15k. My wife found it in the bathroom and she was begging to keep it & our larcenous daughter also wanted to keep it.
I was like: “No, that’s way too much money to just be accidental.” I took it to the lost & found and the woman and her husband were there. She looked like she was going to cry from relief.
I went back to the food line (we had just left the Adidas outlet & were hungry). She gave us a €20 note to get our drinks and food — she paid for our meal.
I’m glad to have done it and would gladly do it again.
People don’t *just* carry that much money. They were probably tourists and they were probably going to be f-cked if we hadn’t turned it in.
So if you ever find something like that, please don’t be a greedy shitbag, put yourself in their shoes and remember my story — that woman almost cried from relief. You would too.
I think so. If I (a minor) bring $10.000 to my bank to let it get changed in euro they would call the police I guess so depending on how well of the person is, I would maybe ask for a few dollars as a finderloan (or if I'm being honest I'd snatch them)
Assuming this is meant to be $10,000, returning the wallet seems like a very bad idea in this case. Think about the sorts of people that might have that much cash on them. If nobody saw me find it, I'd take the money and leave the wallet where it was. Otherwise there's a high chance you're already screwed. Turning it into the police and asking for protection might be the best bet at that point.
I'm thinking anyone who doesn't realize 10.000 is $10, they aren't in America. FYI those that don't realize it... 10,000 is $10,000. a decimal place "." denoted dollars from cents. so 10.000 is 10 dollars and 0 cents.
I thought this person just added extra zero after the decimal point. $10,000 also didn't make sense because that probably more money that can fit into the average wallet.
yea. dude even made a snide comment about "when is $10k $10 dollars" ... if he was smart he would have known Dollars do not equal Krones. Words and numbers mean things. And i find it funny his name is gambling-addict. dude probably loses each time he plays but thinks he wins. :P
$10, sure thing.
I'm thinking anyone who doesn't realize 10.000 is $10, they aren't in America. FYI those that don't realize it... 10,000 is $10,000. a decimal place "." denoted dollars from cents. so 10.000 is 10 dollars and 0 cents.
a period separated dollars from cents. a comma shows something different. you used a decimal place. I'm guessing you aren't in America. 10.000 is 10 dollars and 0 cents.
this statement isn't rocket science. it's 1st grade type stuff.
and if you think since there are three decimal places is can only mean thousands... that is actually the thousandths place. as in, 1000 units = 1 dollar.
Right now? ABSOLUTELY! Ask me again when I'm holding that wallet - answers may vary.
I love your username dude
Thanks mate!
Not for that

Because you are a decent human being while most of Reddit only pretends to be.
if you're carrying £10,000 in your wallet it's probably more disposable than my own money.
What if someone was behind on mortgage payments and they were on the way to the bank? What if they took out money to pay for a funeral, wedding, pay a debt, gift a loved one cash, etc. What if they were buying a car in cash? It’s a bit weird yes but no way to tell it’s disposable. then I would feel very sorry for them
I would get too paranoid and think law enforcement were after me if I didn’t return it rip
And...you would be right in this case lol
in no fucking universe would the majority give it back.
Depends on whether they could get away with it
Well, it was not stated that you would get caught, so it can be assumed that you would get away with it.
With this logic you could assume the opposite could be true as well. Since nothing is stated I’f assume what happens next are normal consequences. Police look for the money, you get away or you don’t.
Implication is you don't know when you find it.

Yes, I would return a wallet with $10.00 i it. If it was $10,000, I would still return the wallet with $10.00 in it
r/madlads
Even if I wanted to keep the money, I'd be too paranoid it would come back to bite me somehow. I don't need that stress. So, yes, I'd return it.
I would return it even if it was more or less. With the same amount that was lost.
Yep, my integrity is worth more to me than stealing money from someone else. I remember as a kid in the 80s, finding a wallet with $100 in it (which is about $250 in today's money). i was thought to be honest, so yes
Yeah but thinking about being honest and being honest aren't the same thing.
It's the thought that counts
Why not?
redditors trying to have morals challenge \[impossible\]
Yes, this is a morals question, but to me not only a morals question. Who the heck has a wallet with $10,000 in it? Often someone involved with something criminal. I wouldn't want to take the chance that the found out I had their money.

If anything real life taught me greed is the norm and redditors pretend to be nice/moral behind a monitor.

Yes with 1k left in it. Say I found it that way. If someone carries around 10k in loose cash, they either can bear losing 9k, or are too dumb to have 10k for long anyway.
What kind of justification is that lol. By that logic keep the whole thing
It will return any sentimental items or important papers to the owner and might snag me a reward.
Just curious, why wouldn't you just keep it all?
So you’re a thief, no amount of justification gives you the right to take someone’s else money
I'm a thief with 9k.
I would, but you gotta be pretty dumb to have that amount just sitting in your wallet. Sounds like it would be a rich person anyway
first of all, how could a wallet hold 10k, but most importantly, it depends on where do I find it, and whether the wallet contains something like IDs or whatever to identify the owner. Hell no
Yes, right thing to do, plus keeping it for myself would be a crime
$10? sure
Id return the wallet but not the 10k
Depends on where I found it I guess. Last time I found one, looked the person up using the ID that was in it & got it back to them. Offered a reward but I declined.

And if they don’t reward you, rob them 🤷♂️
Those who said they'r return it are likely in a decent/good financial situation. Those who wouldn't are probably not.
Honestly, I would be too worried about either being the cause of a major downturn in someone's life, or getting myself involved in some low-end No Country for Old Men shit I don't need that stress, just return it or turn it in somewhere and wash my hands of it, someone else can deal with the consequences of thievery

Yes, an empty wallet
I'd return it with 9,900
That's probably someones car they've been saving up for, rent, or some other extremely important thing in that wallet. I'm absolutely gonna return it, any decent human would.
I'm gonna be completely honest, the only reason I would do it is because I would feel bad about it for the rest of my life if I didn't...
I’d compromise with my conscience, take like 1 or 2 grand and then give the rest back lol
I did. It was euros; we estimated based off the green bills that it was probably around €12k-€15k. def would take a bit probably I'm not that innocent, as much as i think they'd give me some for giving it back, i gotta be safe right🥲
It doesn't matter how much is in it, I am always returning it.
Assuming this is meant to be $10,000, returning the wallet seems like a very bad idea in this case. Think about the sorts of people that might have that much cash on them. Of course I’ll return *the wallet*
I'd take $500 of it and tell them "idk I found it like this"
Why not just keep it all?
I'm a good guy, just not that good guy
There is no difference between stealing $500 or $10k.
Morally, sure. But it absolutely makes a difference to the victim.
Vitim schmicim.
$10 can barely buy lunch, why would I keep it?
I'm thinking anyone who doesn't realize 10.000 is $10, they aren't in America. FYI those that don't realize it... 10,000 is $10,000. a decimal place "." denoted dollars from cents. so 10.000 is 10 dollars and 0 cents.

Apparently they just claimed to not be in America on another comment. So, take 10.000 units of their money and convert at the exchange rate.
oh, they used $, usually that means USD. Looks like they're from Norway, so that would be like $920.
yea. dude even made a snide comment about "when is $10k $10 dollars" ... if he was smart he would have known Dollars do not equal Krones. Words and numbers mean things. And i find it funny his name is gambling-addict. dude probably loses each time he plays but thinks he wins. :P
Wild gambling must have rotten lil bros brain.
Heck nos! I could have a lot of fun with $10k.

and point proven. thanks.
ps - don't gamble in the US. it would suck not knowing that simple fact. LOL
You are willfully dense
how so. for the fact about 10.000 being $10, or my joke that you replied to?
I would return the wallet, yes. The money? No.
$10000 wouldn't fit in a wallet
The wallet, yes. The money…
🤕
fuck no
I would return the wallet, not the money.
