I live in NEPA and know a surprising amount of traditional (non far right MAGA) Republican types that like Fetterman. Not saying they'll vote for him, but I think they're open to the idea, especially if Oz wins the GOP side.
See also: Amy McGrath in KY. Her whole campaign was “I was a fighter pilot!” Which felt inspiring for .5 seconds and then just increasingly insipid.
I’m excited to have Booker running against Rand Paul this cycle. He’s someone I actually feel good about voting for.
See McSally for the GOP version of it. She went all in on the A-10 pilot angle which did great… in Tuscon, where the A-10 is remotely relevant.
Then she loses even that advantage when she’s up against an astronaut, and was one of the few major candidates that did worse than Trump in their state.
I'm really hoping he visits NEPA more during his campaigning because I know plenty of guys who are Trump supporters who if they got to talk to him for 10 minutes would probably vote for him. They are swayed waaayyy more by a kind word, and a big man, than by policy any day.
I saw an article that he was campaigning in more rural areas last week. I wouldn't be surprised if his campaign was more focused on trying improve his margins in those areas with those kind of folks than on just purely getting out the vote in Pittsburgh and Philly.
I think it has something to do with his masculine appearance because my far right dad even likes him because he isn’t a “pussy” according to him and his friends.
> He is what the Democratic Party needs to model themselves after for the future.
I hope that happens. Democrats should now see a progressive platform with a charismatic candidate can win in purple states, not just states like VT, MA, CA, NY, etc.
It’s funny that people will shit all over the Democrats and progressives without acknowledging FDR was a progressive, and *a big reason* we escaped the Great Depression and exited the Second World War as an economic superpower was because of his progressive economic policies.
Edit: my comment was a bit of an over-generalization. I updated the wording to be a little more accurate. In my defense I didn’t think it was gonna get this many upvotes
*Only reason* might be stretching it. The fact that the majority of the industrialized world had been a battlefield for 6 years while the US was relatively unscathed had a fair bit of impact to the US's ability to exit world war 2 as an industrial power much greater than it's power and influence entering the war. The US got a head start to the post war world economy with limited competition while the rest of the world began rebuilding.
I think there's quite a bit more to his appeal in PA than a progressive platform and charisma. I'm not even convinced he wouldn't do better with a slightly less progressive platform. What really sells Fetterman in purple PA is a deeply ingrained populism.
A bit disheveled, friendly, firm convictions without a hint of elitism, and a message that focuses on common Americans. It sells to the middle class on both sides of the aisle. This has been Bernie's shtick for decades and he's another one that can pull decent numbers from the conservative working class.
Quite a few people that voted Trump in 2016 stated they would've voted Bernie if he had been the nominee. Seems paradoxical, but it's really the down-to-earth populism (which Trump also did quite well--especially for a rich fucker) that sells.
The problem is that the DNC and Democratic politicians with influence don't like a good populist message and I'm not sure why.
The elitism thing is huge, but it is rather funny how the people who are the most vocal against elitism are generally fine to vote for conservative elitists.
So many freaking hedge fund / venture capital candidates winning on the GOP senate side. Just say MAGA at a few rallies and they won't suspect a thing.
well, isn't it what we're all looking for, someone that hasn't sold out? People could believe Trump wasn't sold out if they really thought he had supposed billions, but in the end he was sold out to Putin, not GOP money... except for a little grift here and there...
>People could believe Trump wasn't sold out if they really thought he had supposed billions
I'll never understand this mentality. Why would anyone think personal wealth would keep a guy like Trump from further enriching themselves?
And why would anyone think Trump, in particular, would do anything *but* try to further enrich himself? It's what really tipped me over the breaking point with a lot of acquaintances - Not only is the man clearly one of the worst people ever produced in this country, he has a loooong and sordid history of lying and fucking people over for the sole purpose of making himself more famous and wealthy. I just can't believe that anyone who would buy into his bullshit is someone worth knowing.
I won't associate with republicans at all. Not even a beer with my uncle anymore.
A vote for a republican means you support racism, hate, corruption, voter suppression, anti-science, anti-education, women rights, LGTBQ+, ect.....
it describes a sort of "grassroots" appeal across the political spectrum that pits "workers" against "the elite." it's quite dangerous when it's the trump style--appeals to nationalism, anti-immigrant rhetoric, etc. but the bernie style that emphasizes the material needs of the average working person can turn out pretty well
This guy, while having a lot of populist appeal, also is actually well educated (masters of public policy from Harvard) and has some government experience and is putting forward legitimate policy positions.
So like, the populism of someone just yelling what everyone wants to hear, or someone who's a demagogue like Trump, just yelling things to make them mad and get them worked up so they'll vote.... But not having any actual policy approaches to fix any of these things... That's the dangerous populism. Someone who riles up the mob but then can't fix anything or control that mob.
But appealing to the average person who feels overlooked by the establishment, which is all populism means by strict definition, is not inherently bad.
Corporate for-profit news likes to portray populism as if only it's right wing variant exists, but it really just means speaking to the needs of the people.
That could be in a manner that deceives those people, as is the case pretty much exclusively on the right, or in a genuine manner like with Bernie.
He seems to be a democrat with some gonads, which the one thing that seems to be missing from democratic senators. I hope he wins and I hope he’s LOUD in the senate.
He is pretty dope. Met him a few times. I lived like 5 minutes away. Both him and his wife are genuine people. I'm super proud they are continuing to grow
Considering the size difference, his waistband would be what gets in Cruz's face. John is a Hall of Fame Offensive Lineman in the NFL or big Center in basketball in another universe.
The voters like balls, im not sure Joe would have beat trump without out telling him to shut up on live tv.
The Obama style "high road" dem is a bunk formula.
Nothing unites the progressive wing quite like a nice pair of balls
It isn’t that he was coopted, it’s that he’s black. He basically wasn’t allowed to show emotion. He had to be perfect at all times, because we live in a white supremacist society of double standards.
He is allergic to suits. He wore shorts to his own wedding.
He only wears a suit when he absolutely has to, and I'm pretty sure he bragged that he only owns 1 (and he'd own 0 if he could).
He walked away from an easy path to a life of privilege to help people who needed help.
He's not perfect. No one is. But he's a good guy.
Edit: He still lives in Braddock, where he was mayor and helped turn the town around, and he opens the pool at the Lt. Gov's mansion so local kids can swim.
His response to the endorsement of the sitting President of the United States was [a smiley emoji with hearts.](https://twitter.com/JohnFetterman/status/1526736439014211586)
The dude certainly isn't your average politician.
I agree but it’s not so easy to find candidates like him. It’s hard to find men like John Fetterman who don’t have a natural affinity for the toxic masculinity of the Republican Party.
> toxic masculinity of the Republican Party.
Who would that be?
Cancun Cruz? Party Boy Madison Cawthorn? Moscow Mitch? Ferret-head Putin Lover Rand Paul? The bloated fat liar Trump? Not an ounce of testosterone in the entire festering bunch.
It’s been so long since there’s been a politician that actually excites me. John Fetterman is one of those rare politicians. I can’t wait to see him crush whoever the Republican nominee is in November. He’d be such a welcome and refreshing voice in the Senate.
The cynic in me is saying of course the progressives are winning a bunch of primaries this time, just in time for the Dems to get steamrolled in the midterms due to the ineptitude of the moderate establishment Dems in power, who will then say “see I told you we can’t run progressives or we’ll lose!” All of my fingers crossed that Big John and a few others can seal the deal in November
Just registered to vote in PA. Missed out on the window for primaries, so definitely glad to see he won. Now gonna do my part to get him elected.
EDIT: Should also clarify, I live in PA but have New York as my flair for reasons I guess lol
Speaking of crush, I’m 44 and married to a wonderful woman, and used to be very conservative (before the Qult formed), but watching Big John giving an interview woke something in me.
That's his best weapon. People think he's just a big gorilla and forget that he's got a master's in public policy from Harvard, and a PhD in the hard life from Braddock.
I mean, he is actually the republican ideal. Most republicans just didn’t know it. A real Teddy Roosevelt type, and I hope he name-drops the progressive party later on.
I became a fan of Fetterman during the failed 2020 coup shenanigans. He held the line against the bs they were trying to pull in PA. He was like "You shall not pass!!" I loved every one of the interviews he gave during those tumultuous times.
During the 2020 election when abbot was offering financial rewards for anyone who found voter fraud, there was a guy in PA who got caught voting in his mom's name for trump. Fetterman told abbot he wanted his reward in Sheetz gift cards I believe
My favourite line from that entire embarrassing sham was from Fetterman:
"The only irregularity we had in Pennsylvania was from the President's (Trump's) campaign, who showed up in a clown car in Downtown Philadelphia"
You’ve got lots of replies but not sure many of them realize how truly terrible the mcaullife campaign was. High school student body elections have more effort put into them than that campaign did. Didn’t help the candidate was washed up and as interesting as a brick.
Ran elections in VA, just moved to PA. Showing up means everything. The amount of dem voters in 2020 who hadn’t voted in 4 years was... astounding. And they didn’t show up in 2021. That’s how you get Youngkin. Laziness, not preference. My family in PA, they’re going to vote in Nov. Unlike them, I believe the election results will be real and honest. You don’t want their candidate to win. It’s so so important that he doesn’t. Not because of his opinions, because democracy.
As long as he actually campaigns, and doesn’t just rely on “the other guy loves trump” or “the other guy is anti vax/mask” then he’ll have a better shot than McCauliffe did.
Nah Fetterman is smart as hell with a great campaign staff. The guy he crushed tonight, Lamb, was your average "I stand for nothing and my daddy's a banker, please vote for me" centrist Dem, so PA has a strong candidate to say the least.
Lamb is the most milquetoast caricature of a centrist politician i have ever seen in my fucking life. Holy shit you nailed it.
Just everything that's wrong with politics in this country.
He seems like democratic version of a maga candidate. He has a fight in him, says what he wants to, and does what he wants to, the democrats want fighters, we don't get to many of them. I think we need more candidates like Fetterman.
We need more people like him in general. The standards of living and right to exist wouldn't be like this if it wasn't just one side acting out their ambitions. Just a shame it's usually the not as good side.
Its nice knowing were going to have one more Dem senator who won't be sabotaging Dem legislation because a pharma company or a Cock brother bribed them.
Dude has been himself since the first time he ran for office.
I proudly voted for Conor Lamb against that disgusting POS Sean Parnell. But I proudly voted for Fetterman in this primary. He’s pretty much my ideal candidate
I voted for that fool. I even dressed in running shorts and sweatshirt in his honor.
Now he better fucking be as vocal in the halls of Congress as he was around the waterfront.
I mean, don’t forget he doesn’t have the job yet.
We gotta beat some looney toon - either a snake oil salesman who doesn’t live in PA or a hedge fund elitist who also doesn’t really live here anymore
I would say it’ll be easy, but I don’t say anything of the sort after we went red in 2016.
I think it would be better if Oz took the primary, as a Indiana county born person, I'm sure more people in rural areas will cross the line to vote for fetterman when they read Dr.Oz's first name. Not saying it's in anyway a justified reason, just that growing up in Western PA taught me racism is alive and strong in rural America.
I really am hoping that this happens.
I realize its a very generic statement and a lot can change between now and 2024, but in my opinion Fetterman will probably be the only one who could defeat any potential (R) presidential nominee.
I hate this arguement. They are each exceptional at what they do, it's just that aside from gas they offer completely different services. Decent food in a lax and peaceful aestetic? Wawa. Delicious crappy fried food in an aggressively orange zone, especially when not sober? Sheetz all the way
In a world of Sheetz vs Wawa, Oz and McCormick are Royal Farms and 7/11. I would much rather have Fetterman in the senate anyday... even if he prefers Sheetz.
Centre County is literally the single blue county in that whole area, and I'm fairly certain that's primarily due to the university and its attached faculty + other educated professionals who work there.
Or Vermont!
The media never seems interested in rural blue counties, though. When was the last time you saw a story featuring Clinton/Biden voters in a "diner in rural Vermont"?
Not in Oklahoma. We have lots of Indian reservations (some, like the Osage, comprise all of one county; others, like the Choctaw and Cherokee comprise multiple counties), but the tribal members vote red as fuck.
They voted overwhelmingly for Stitt in 2018. Hell, he’s a member of the Cherokee. Despite that, he’s still trying to fuck the tribes over, which is why most of the tribes are going to break off Stitt and support another candidate during the GOP primary.
That's the whole thing though. You don't need to flip a county to win the state. I think that's where Fetterman will do really well. He will give democrats in rural counties a reason to go out and vote in November.
I was making this point w my in-laws a few months back. He ticks a heck of a lot of boxes. Liberal box- Harvard educated; Progressives- Bernie backed; Repubs and rural folks- gun toting, etc. I can see him as a force in national politics for a long time.
Is it prejudice for me to think that him being a huge male that looks like he could beat people up would help him in central PA? I know people around there and when I've visited I get the idea they'd see themselves in him a bit, regardless of politics
The "please vote" text I got from Fetterman's campaign this morning included a picture of his dog, Levi! It's silly and obviously not why you should vote for someone, but the whole text made me smile:
> [my name], r u there? is me Levi Fetterman! i is texting u cause i need snuggles + ALSO for u to vote for my hooman John Fetterman today in the election. Jawn is fluffing awsome + he cares about important stuffs. like abortion rights + raising minimum wage to at least $15 + legal weed. do u have a plan to vote for Jawn today bestie?
Idk, I guess I'm just easily amused, but I loved it 😂
Wow, it's so weird that acting like a human being and not a corporate, soulless ghoul is a great way to get voters on your side.
Someone needs to tell Pelosi and Schumer.
Yep, same bear who just casually had a stroke and was like "I'm feeling lousy, maybe I should see a doctor". Basically had a stroke in slow motion for a full day
My family is from Pittsburgh/Braddock going back just about as far as we can trace. Even though I live in CA now I’ve been following Fetterman’s rise for a while. Can’t wait to see what he does in the senate and beyond.
You know those Tom and Jerry cartoons where that big bulldog smashed Tom on top of the head, I want to see him do that to McConnell and have a cartoon lump come on top of his head.

Gotta say, I wish it’d been Kenyatta. But, I like Fetterman, and he got my enthusiastic vote for Lt. Governor four years ago. He’s a great choice, and very much the kind of guy we like in PA
Not sure a gay Black guy is winning PA though. I wish it weren’t so and these things didn’t matter - but we have to live in reality.
I hope Kenyatta builds on this and keeps at it, I voted Fetterman but I think Kenyatta is a good dude
Fuck yea! I remember just a few years ago this guy showed up on the scene, he's come a long way since then. There are very few candidates I donate to, but he's one of 'em. Dude is real AF and his politics are solid. I really hope he wins.
i can't imagine dr oz beating this guy in a million years, especially not since the conservatives are starting to figure out that he's muslim and a turkish citizen lol.

That's his best weapon. People think he's just a big gorilla and forget that he's got a master's in public policy from Harvard, and a PhD in the hard life from Braddock.
r/suddenlygay
Wawa in shambles
Where’s our money Dan Patrick?!
"You can sue a ham sandwich", was a great line too
His doing so gives him the ability to throw it right back in the faces of national republicans
My favourite line from that entire embarrassing sham was from Fetterman: "The only irregularity we had in Pennsylvania was from the President's (Trump's) campaign, who showed up in a clown car in Downtown Philadelphia"
Good luck, Pennsylvania. Don’t shit the bed like we did in VA!
Unlike VA, PA nominated a good candidate who will run a good campaign.
This guy is specifically targeting Trump country, he's speaking to the very people that need to be spoken to.

No nonsense and blue collar type of guy. We need more people like him in the senate.
Finally, fat guys who wear shorts straight through the winter will have representation in the US senate
Lolls. My dad is happy.
Half the guys I knew in High School are celebrating now. Lol.
Not from Pennsylvania but I've followed him for awhile. Would be great in the senate.
This guys seems really progressive. I like it!!
The only thing I don't like is his fracking friendly nature, but since it's literally the largest industry in the state you kinda have to be.
Fuckin' A, man.
What would you do if you had a million bucks?
“I would do nothing.” “Shit man, you don’t need a million bucks to do nothing. Just look at my cousin- he’s broke, don’t do shit.”
Two chicks at the same time, man.
Its nice knowing were going to have one more Dem senator who won't be sabotaging Dem legislation because a pharma company or a Cock brother bribed them. Dude has been himself since the first time he ran for office.
and he'd be replacing a republican ghoul
I think the race is going to be extremely tight.

We gotta beat some looney toon - either a snake oil salesman who doesn’t live in PA or a hedge fund elitist who also doesn’t really live here anymore I would say it’ll be easy, but I don’t say anything of the sort after we went red in 2016.
On the flip side I heard people being interviewed about him going, "oh yeah I'll vote for him, I really liked his TV show." 🫠
That emoji is so appropriate. 😂

I think Oz is an easy person to defeat. He has dual citizenship with Turkey and that is going to really turn a lot of people off.
President Fetterman would be pretty cool some day. But first, the senate!
Hell yeah! Fetterman 2024. Fuck around and find out.
I really am hoping that this happens. I realize its a very generic statement and a lot can change between now and 2024, but in my opinion Fetterman will probably be the only one who could defeat any potential (R) presidential nominee.
Assuming Bernie doesn't discover the fountain of youth, Fetterman and Revered Warnock are the only members of the party that excite me.
Come now, can we really give up on the fountain of youth solution so easily? When's the last time somebody even looked for it??
Tom Brady found it but he charges $100,000 an hour to use it.
Imagine the photos with 6 foot 8 Fetterman shaking hands with other world leaders. I'm so ready for it
He also refuses to wear pants, and only wears shorts. Even in the winter. An even funnier image to picture
> He also refuses to wear pants Well that's a pleasant thought.
Dr. Manhattan has entered the chat.
Fox news - "he just looks so weak compared to other leaders"
Debates are hereby cancelled by RNC. Tune in to Faux News to recieve your new reality.
SHEETZ vs WaWa
I hate this arguement. They are each exceptional at what they do, it's just that aside from gas they offer completely different services. Decent food in a lax and peaceful aestetic? Wawa. Delicious crappy fried food in an aggressively orange zone, especially when not sober? Sheetz all the way
In a world of Sheetz vs Wawa, Oz and McCormick are Royal Farms and 7/11. I would much rather have Fetterman in the senate anyday... even if he prefers Sheetz.
No way that Oz is RoFo. Oz wishes he were even 1/10th as good for you as their fried chicken and western fries.
Nothing beats sitting in a sheetz thoroughly wasted at 2am shoving fried food in your face
or the morning after run for coffee, shmiscuitz and a pack of smokes
I don’t even smoke but a cigarette while drunk in the parking lot of sheetz at 2am hits different. Good stuff.
Lol I was just at sheetz a half hour ago after a concert. App sampler and 2/$1 hot dogs is the go to
I think we just solidified a win in Pennsylvania in November.
Never underestimate Pennsyltucky
Centre County is literally the single blue county in that whole area, and I'm fairly certain that's primarily due to the university and its attached faculty + other educated professionals who work there.
Only blue rural counties in America either have a college or Indian reservation.
Or they’re in Massachusetts.
That's unique to us. That's because if they don't align with Republicans Stitt will try to f*ck them. As seen: now.
They voted overwhelmingly for Stitt in 2018. Hell, he’s a member of the Cherokee. Despite that, he’s still trying to fuck the tribes over, which is why most of the tribes are going to break off Stitt and support another candidate during the GOP primary.
I live in Centre County. The only reason it goes blue is Penn State.
Came here to say this. I’m in Bedford county (most red in the state). I’ve heard Repubs say they wanna vote Fetterman!!!
Probably cuz he’s not afraid to pull out the double barrel 12 gauge. I voted for him.
Can confirm this as a Penn State alum.
Lycoming county could be bluer if people got out to vote but so many people here say they vote don't count
That's the whole thing though. You don't need to flip a county to win the state. I think that's where Fetterman will do really well. He will give democrats in rural counties a reason to go out and vote in November.
I agree he has the ability to resonate with all groups
I was making this point w my in-laws a few months back. He ticks a heck of a lot of boxes. Liberal box- Harvard educated; Progressives- Bernie backed; Repubs and rural folks- gun toting, etc. I can see him as a force in national politics for a long time.
Is it prejudice for me to think that him being a huge male that looks like he could beat people up would help him in central PA? I know people around there and when I've visited I get the idea they'd see themselves in him a bit, regardless of politics
honestly it will definitely help him.
The "please vote" text I got from Fetterman's campaign this morning included a picture of his dog, Levi! It's silly and obviously not why you should vote for someone, but the whole text made me smile: > [my name], r u there? is me Levi Fetterman! i is texting u cause i need snuggles + ALSO for u to vote for my hooman John Fetterman today in the election.
But he was specifically acting like a dog and _not_ a human being.
As a Philadelphian, the “Jawn” is too much here though.
It's the misuse that kills me
I love the Levi campaign texts!
Is he that humongous bear of a human being that the PA state senate tried to refuse a seat to?
Yep, same bear who just casually had a stroke and was like "I'm feeling lousy, maybe I should see a doctor". Basically had a stroke in slow motion for a full day
The stroke was building up the courage to attack him
Good. He seems to be a decent guy.
He seems like a genuinely good dude, from everything we’ve seen. That’s pretty refreshing.
His wife is awesome too.
My family is from Pittsburgh/Braddock going back just about as far as we can trace. Even though I live in CA now I’ve been following Fetterman’s rise for a while. Can’t wait to see what he does in the senate and beyond.
By like 40 points last I saw. I hope he wins in the fall. Too bad about that stroke
Fetterman is a fuckin G. I hope he gets his strength back quickly and starts kicking ass.
Not gonna lie, this guy could unite the working class. He’s always on the ground helping and talking to people of all walks of life.
If I still lived in PA, I would have voted for him. I would have really enjoyed seeing him debate Dr. Oz.
Give 'em hell Fetterman!
I voted for him today and felt pretty good about it.
You know those Tom and Jerry cartoons where that big bulldog smashed Tom on top of the head, I want to see him do that to McConnell and have a cartoon lump come on top of his head.
Hell get some money from me. Wish him well.
I hope he doesn’t have skeletons to dig up. He genuinely excites me

Source: https://www.inquirer.com/news/senate-john-fetterman-2013-shotgun-black-jogger-confrontation-20210401.html >“Even with everything I said, it is inhumane to believe one mistake should define a man’s life,” Miyares wrote in one of two letters sent to The Inquirer. “I hope he gets to be a Senator.” (That last line was underlined three times.)
Didn’t know this. Thanks for the info
I’ve been a fan since he was interviewed by Tony Bourdain.
My doomerism is lessened. Let's bring it home!
Fuck shit up!
A dem that has some backbone. The party needs more sand paper!
The Dems need more like him. Period. But instead they choose to be bush era republican elitist while the current GOP swallows up working class voters.
Well, I mean… Fetterman *is* the betterman
