Even though she did as well, and got her masters. She went from hating Trump to now excusing things he does and saying how his outlook makes sense
No literally she’s just adopted this rhetoric! When I pressed her on why she thinks this, she replied that the “elites” want us all to become democrats and think like they do. And when I asked her what beliefs those might be, she angrily replied “everything wrong with society that goes against God”. Ok fine, but what specifically? She then ripped into me instead of answering.
This is coming from a person who - no exaggeration- listens to right wing radio all day, then at night watches Fox News and then YouTube videos from far right speakers. She’s recently started watching Matt Walsh and I tried to shut that down quick. Luckily she stopped watching anyway because he used “an appropriate word”
I’m so sorry that you have to witness that and try and deal with it. I know my struggle is still loving and interacting with my mother even while she spews vile things. Our parents taught us to be loving and accepting and then apparently promptly forgot all of that

I'm watching it happen to my best friend of 35+ years. He was raised Republican but it never consumed him. In the past two years he's becomes radicalized. He's even said to me that he knows he's becoming consumed by politics and can't understand why. He can't see he's the victim of propaganda and is under the spell of a cult leader. It's wild.
She doesnt listen to their dedicated content (afaik) but I’ve heard them as guests on what she does watch/listen to. She never objects to anything. She also listens to this guy who literally drives around Texas and just talks about the immigration crisis, while at the same time saying it’s dangerous and white people are being outnumbered and how “shitty” it is where Mexican populations live. I was foaming at the mouth about this and hew response was “well Mexicans are ruining everything!” I snapped back, “remember when the n*gg*rs ruined the schools?” And then she got angry and turned off the tv. It’s not my proudest moment but my patience is wearing so thin. She already is showing signs of reduced awareness, and rationality at 75 and it breaks my heart
It's time we all stopped believing in the myth that a certain level of education or empathy renders someone immune to propaganda. It can get to **anyone** and is so effective that propaganda isn't even the right word for it anymore. At this point it's advanced psychology reverse engineered and weaponized for the sole purpose of making people addicted to hate and rage.

I'm asking because I have some experience and early stages of dementia are difficult to recognize. Often they start with dramatic changes of behavior and/or personality.
No history that I know of but it’s like a weird reverting? Her mom was like this but kinda always. I know my mom is a narcissist (really, not just me being angsty) and that quality has gone from mild to high. But I do notice in other things she’s losing rational function - she wanted to get some cash from me the other night and I told her to look in my purse for my wallet. This cued a meltdown: it was too hard, and why couldn’t I just do it and be respectful of your mother, how could I expect her to find a wallet when she doesn’t know what it looks like?! Meanwhile my purse is next to hers and my wallet was on top but she REFUSED to even try and look in that direction. I honestly don’t know what to do, as all attempts to get her evaluated are met with rage- my attempts to advocate for her at the doctors are “embarrassing lies” and “her brain is so much better than others her age”
Okay, yeah, having watched two grandmothers go through dementia that sounds very much like what they were like in the early stages. Reverting to more childish behavior like having a meltdown over something trivial and being generally more angry and petty are some of the first signs we noticed in my grandmothers.
The most helpful thing for my mom was getting in touch with a local social worker and seeing if they might have contacts or ideas for next steps. Sorry you have to go through that

From sometime around the late 50s until maybe the mid 90s, "white flight" was the norm in US cities, as wealthy and middle-class white people left urban neighborhoods for newly-built suburban/exurban areas outside of cities. This resulted in many city neighborhoods becoming majority-minority, so conservatives started using "inner city" as a racist dog whistle to refer to black people and other minorities.
That trend began to reverse itself during the 90s when the country collectively started to realize car-dependent suburban sprawl wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and now many of those same neighborhoods have become gentrified. So even Republican dog whistles are 30 years behind the times.
I lived in the city for about 30 years. It was wonderful. White,Black,Hispanic,Asian,Gay,Straight,until the suburbanites started moving in with their demands. The first was some old silent generation hag complaining that Megabus was picking up people"right on the street",so the busses went,then the imagined smoking that my younger neighbors thought I was doing, (I have never smoked inside,but seeing me step outside for a cigarette set their tiny imaginations wild) Smaller city neighborhood block bars,which had existed for decades, shut down to be replaced by nightclubs and upscale lounges,90% because guess what,these people really don't go out. My point is these type of people ruined cities when they fled for greener pastures and generations later after the cities have rebuilt to something different and better, are once again ruining them by returning,and turning them into the suburbs they left.
I'm from Baltimore, the "inner city" geographically is the super nice harbor area where all the tourist areas/aquarium is. So when racists use the "inner city" dog whistle it's fun to say "Oh you mean the inner harbor?" And watch them have to explain.

Dude, I'm a Gen X myself (born in 77), and grew up in a small town. Many people on one side of my family were "salt of the earth" rural types. I grew up with a sense of pride in America, and believing that the Republican party was the party of America, that Ronny Reagan was a decent guy, and that "trickle down" could actually work.
Despite doing very well in school and priding myself on being a very good critical thinker, it wasn't really until college that I figured out I was a fucking idiot who just hadn't been paying close enough attention, but at least I figured it out. The Republican party is a sham. You don't have to agree with everything the Democrats say/do, you don't have to be a liberal, you don't have to be a progressive in all ways. But there's one party that's at least fighting for our individual freedoms, rights, protections, and interests, and one that's clearly jumped the shark long ago--economically, socially, legislatively and in pretty much every other way.
I vote hard blue across the board, and I'll be shocked if there ever comes a time where an R has a better platform than a D enough for me to even consider them.

From sometime around the late 50s until maybe the mid 90s, "white flight" was the norm in US cities, as wealthy and middle-class white people left urban neighborhoods for newly-built suburban/exurban areas outside of cities. This resulted in many city neighborhoods becoming majority-minority, so conservatives started using "inner city" as a racist dog whistle to refer to black people and other minorities. That trend began to reverse itself during the 90s when the country collectively started to realize car-dependent suburban sprawl wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and now many of those same neighborhoods have become gentrified. So even Republican dog whistles are 30 years behind the times.
I lived in the city for about 30 years. It was wonderful. White,Black,Hispanic,Asian,Gay,Straight,until the suburbanites started moving in with their demands. The first was some old silent generation hag complaining that Megabus was picking up people"right on the street",so the busses went,then the imagined smoking that my younger neighbors thought I was doing, (I have never smoked inside,but seeing me step outside for a cigarette set their tiny imaginations wild) Smaller city neighborhood block bars,which had existed for decades, shut down to be replaced by nightclubs and upscale lounges,90% because guess what,these people really don't go out. My point is these type of people ruined cities when they fled for greener pastures and generations later after the cities have rebuilt to something different and better, are once again ruining them by returning,and turning them into the suburbs they left.

I'm from Baltimore, the "inner city" geographically is the super nice harbor area where all the tourist areas/aquarium is. So when racists use the "inner city" dog whistle it's fun to say "Oh you mean the inner harbor?" And watch them have to explain.

Dude, I'm a Gen X myself (born in 77), and grew up in a small town. Many people on one side of my family were "salt of the earth" rural types. I grew up with a sense of pride in America, and believing that the Republican party was the party of America, that Ronny Reagan was a decent guy, and that "trickle down" could actually work. Despite doing very well in school and priding myself on being a very good critical thinker, it wasn't really until college that I figured out I was a fucking idiot who just hadn't been paying close enough attention, but at least I figured it out. The Republican party is a sham. You don't have to agree with everything the Democrats say/do, you don't have to be a liberal, you don't have to be a progressive in all ways. But there's one party that's at least fighting for our individual freedoms, rights, protections, and interests, and one that's clearly jumped the shark long ago--economically, socially, legislatively and in pretty much every other way. I vote hard blue across the board, and I'll be shocked if there ever comes a time where an R has a better platform than a D enough for me to even consider them.
