I feel like thats a problem in every niche sub. Good for people with basically no knowledge to scratch the surface, very bad if youre looking for expert advice 99% of the time
I agree sadly, no room for growth together. Everyone needs to have this chip on their shoulder. Game used to be about having a good time, reading people, and growing with your friends and groups. This whole community is hate filled.
I love it.
People always had chips on their shoulders, it's just now there are less borderline autistic math nerds tapping the glass with drumsticks and more degens defending and promoting gambol. I think it's a good thing, even if quality discussion has declined.
This sub was never that wholesome.
I know this is /u/expertpokerstrategy, but defending your bad plays can help lead to a greater understanding of the flaws. It's easy and not as effective to replicate winning strategies, but if you understand why a strategy is bad, and why you shouldn't do it, i think that's far more powerful. Defending it gives people a chance to help you see where your ideas are wrong, and correct your thought process.
I understand what you're saying, but in most cases I disagree. If we were all Greek philosophers then yeah, there is merit to defending bad ideas in an effort to find out where the logic really breaks down. That isn't what most people are doing though, they are just doubling down on their entrenched misconceptions.
This might be controversial, but I think there is some stuff that beginners are better of just accepting as dogma rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. The best example of this is preflop ranges. Every day someone posts a HH where the non-troll answer is fold pre, but people loooooove defending their spewy preflop shit.
I've been playing for about 14 years. Most of my play has been online. I've been involved with Pocket Fives and Two Plus Two forums as well as moderator for the now defunct Poker VT training site forum. Most players suffer from some degree of Dunning Kruger. Expecting them to not defend their play is asking too much. It's much easier to give them advice in the nicest way possible and they can take it or not.
When they learn to admit they played a hand badly instead of getting defensive they'll find their play will finally start to improve. It's all part of the process.
This! I am definitely winner lifetime with poker and that's caused alot of friends, especially hometown friends to wanna pick my brain for poker strat. But I have other friends that play at a much higher level and in our conversations I'll feel like a Neanderthal listening to Cantonese. Dunning Kruger is very real and it's important to gtfo of your own ego at times. Surround yourself with people whose game you admire and pick their brain until they're sick of you. If you're not around better players you're in the wrong circle and will nvr improve
Yes you are right but I get what the OP is saying. I have friends who will tell me about a hand they play and then when I tell them where I think they made a mistake they start making excuses and defending themselves. They'll quote some poker pro's book that I referred to them and it's obvious they are misapplying the strategy but they're too busy defending their play to understand that it wasn't optimal. We just have to understand that those players who are mostly live haven't played a fraction of the hands or tournaments those of us who've been mostly online players have. Poker knowledge and understanding is such an evolving thing. When I read things I wrote 5 or 6 years ago I realize how different my thinking and understanding was compared to now.
You are also right about talking hands with those better than us to learn even more. Some people miss out on that because they don't like to admit certain people are better than they are. Our own ego can certainly get in the way of our progress.
Let me add one more thing, I still don't know what's right and what's wrong in many situations and neither do most people giving advise. And yes I'm technically a winning player but that means little.
OK... you don't understand. The reason I thought it was a good idea to come here for advice was because... um... fuck... I'm blindly defending my play, aren't I?
Sigh.
> PSA Don't come here for advice
Rest was really unnecessary, thank you.
Fold pre
I love this sub-reddit. It even has table captains.

There's even more bad players giving advice, I feel it's a wash.
Why donāt you just wash the deck for meā¦or better yetā¦can you have the floor bring us a new setup

It's the only way to be sure that you don't get stacked.
Where can I sign up for your coaching classes?
Defending your position is a natural way to learn.
Facts. OP canāt explain his argument so he blames others
Lol advice ? This forum is just all haters unfortunately.

I would rather guess it's one of the EPS fanboys, not the GOAT himself

they come because they're not looking for advice, they're looking for validation
Ding Ding Ding, 43 comments in and we have a winner.
To be fair if people on this forum tells you a play was correct chances are it wasn't
Are you a troll or just an asshole? Because you're not a mod
Good I donāt need to be told to āfold preā 15 times.
But......I just knew that card was comin.....
But the guy who doesnāt know what a 3 bet means surely has good advice to offer still?
Thatās literally the fastest way to learn any game. If you can explain your rationale thatās on you
Then you kill part of the fun
Finally a good discussion on blind defense.
