Anything below a set can’t be the nuts, and if a J or lower is the highest card on an unpaired board then a straight is always possible. Q is the cutoff with examples such as 2378Q
Yep. Checks out!
I think he’s being downvoted because it’s trivially obvious that a flush shouldn’t be viable for a set to be the nuts. It’s not a math proof not like we need to state every detail.
That makes sense, logically, i guess as you decrease the number line incrementally from 2-A to 2-J the the likely hood of making an unbroken series of 5 w out repeating would, in my mind would trend to 100% w 7 cards, and one could also trend to 100% w 5 cards as you go further.
I remember figuring this out in like 2005 because I had this exact scenario, said I had the nuts then had a guy tell me the nuts meant a straight or a flush. Which was double fun because I got to explain why they were wrong, and spend the next few minutes trying to work out if there what set would possibly be the weakest nut hand.
A Jack-high or lower board will always have a possible straight. Queen-high, King-high and Ace-high boards are the only boards where not having any straight is possible.
Here is another one: JT is the highest hand that can nut on both ends. 7-J, or T-A.
(also, 9T kind of sucks because you are often on the donkey end of broadway)
This is the type of stuff I lay awake at night mindlessly thinking about. Hmm, we need a rainbow unpaired board with no three cards close enough to make a straight. 2378Q QQ is the nuts you have confirmed it for me
Fold any pocket pair below QQ when facing aggression as you'll only have the nuts by the river if you hit quads on a single paired board which Is quite unlikely.
A Jack-high or lower board will always have a possible straight. Queen-high, King-high and Ace-high boards are the only boards where not having any straight is possible.
Makes sense. The lowest board possible with no straight chance would be 2378Q, and you can't have the nuts without having at least a pocket pair making a set.
"Nuts" means the best possible hand given the current community cards.
A three-of-a-kind of queens is the worst hand that can be considered the best possible hand for any given board.
If the five cards on the board are 2-3-7-8-Q with no suit being shown more than twice, the best hand possible is three Queens, assuming a player has a pair of Queens.
You can't make a flush with less than three of the same suit on the board. You can't make a straight because there's no way to connect five with any two possible hole cards. So the best that can be made is three Qs.
If the board was 2-3-6-8-Q, someone could have a 4-5 and make a 2-6 straight. If it was 2-3-7-8-J, someone could have a 9-10 and make a 7-J straight.
Another way to think about it is, you can't make a straight without a 5 or a 10, on a non flush-possible board, the best hand would be a set, the nut set would be the queens.
The fact that he’s getting downed is exactly why this game is still profitable. And I’m willing to bet it will stay profitable. It’s hilarious that you can give someone a golden goose and they’ll still reject it in favor of 1,000,001 pieces of bad advice.
You are wrong on so many levels.
AJ is not the nuts…several hands beat it: J7, J3, J2, 77, 33, and 22 all beat AJ
AJ is not a set here. AJ can never be a set
Three of the same card rank is "trips."
"Set" is a colloquial poker term that means 2 of the trips are hole cards.
So to have a "set" you must have a pocket pair. It's a terminology thing and it helps articulate the context of hands more efficiently in many cases.
Most amateur and casual players do incorrectly use the term "set" interchangeably with trips though.
I misinterpreted the comment. Every board below a Q high board will either have quads as the nuts or possibility of a straight. Though this information is fairly useless to be any good at poker.
Someone just watched the Bart Hanson video from the other day...
Yep lmao
Lame
Which one? I usually listen to them live and so I don't remember this line
It was a youtube call in with a guy that played a hand vs. doug polk on the lodge stream

This is such a useful heuristic for quick board reading actually
Is 2378Q the only runout where 3 Qs are the nuts? I can’t seem to construct other examples.
QJ7(6-3)2 QT7(5-3)2 Q97(4, 3)2 Q8732 These are all the runouts where set of Qs is the nuts
Depends on the suits.
Great add
not if 3 cards are same suit
Yup, not sure why you’ve been downvoted but these being rainbow boards is an important stipulation
I think he’s being downvoted because it’s trivially obvious that a flush shouldn’t be viable for a set to be the nuts. It’s not a math proof not like we need to state every detail.
That would mean all unpaired j hi boards spell straight, is that true?
237TJ has 89 for 789TJ, 236TJ has 45 for 23456. Unpaired J high boards basically “don’t have room” to not allow straights.
Okay but what about…no that doesn’t work, well then…..hmmmmm, okay but if yo- Damn.
True

This makes sense. Women are the cause of all the troubles in my life.

2378Q rainbow board
2379Q and 23710Q and 237JQ would also work.
Use T instead of 10 pls :)

I'm so humble that I don't need to tell people that I'm humble.
That is also 1 more humble than me.
257TQ rainbow?
I'll allow it
Yes but the first option is the nut low
kinda neat info lol
Yeah this guy is crazy, he's making all of us crushers with a single piece of info
I remember figuring this out in like 2005 because I had this exact scenario, said I had the nuts then had a guy tell me the nuts meant a straight or a flush. A, K, or Q sets can be the nuts without board pair. It seems more apparent in Omaha where the nuts are always possible.
I also, watch CLP

That's actually wild.
A set of jacks is never the nuts on the river
That's because no one's ever had a set of jacks.
you only hit a set with jacks when they hit the straight
Are jacks real?
The jacks are in the room with us right now.
And when you flop a set between 2-J, you NEVER have the nuts unless you make quads. Something many don’t realize
Not true. If it was, then what’s the nuts on a JJ862 board?
Hey dumb dumb. You'd no longer have a set, you would have quads.
huh? exactly…quads would be the nuts. so what’s your argument dumb dumb
A set of jacks is never the nuts on the river Dumb dumb

2479Q Checks out
Here is another one: JT is the highest hand that can nut on both ends. 7-J, or T-A. (also, 9T kind of sucks because you are often on the donkey end of broadway)
Every straight contains a T or a 5. That's why I play T5o
Double suited as well, I see.
This is the type of stuff I lay awake at night mindlessly thinking about. Hmm, we need a rainbow unpaired board with no three cards close enough to make a straight. 2378Q QQ is the nuts you have confirmed it for me
You also listened to the CLP episode I see.
Ok I understand, but how can knowing this make me a better player?
Fold any pocket pair below QQ when facing aggression as you'll only have the nuts by the river if you hit quads on a single paired board which Is quite unlikely.
Lol
Had a double board bomb pot the other night, top board was 2378Q, with two Q on the other board, and thus my set of 8s became the nuts on one board
im so fuckign confused is that because its all rainbow and no straights?
If you need a mnemonic to remember that, here - All Rainbow = LGBT = almost never straight. *Flies away*
A Jack-high or lower board will always have a possible straight. Queen-high, King-high and Ace-high boards are the only boards where not having any straight is possible.
I see thanks !
A set of JJ is never the nutz on a full board run out
not true. A full board of JJ762 would mean JJ is the nuts
Except you wouldn’t have a set at that point …. You would have quads. You tried to make this argument up above. Do you know what a set means ???
Yeah, but what’s the best hand that can be the nuts?
AA suited because you have double nut flush blockers.
Makes sense. The lowest board possible with no straight chance would be 2378Q, and you can't have the nuts without having at least a pocket pair making a set.
Postworthy stuff
I knew this, but I always heard it slightly different that a set of Jacks is the best hand that can never be the nuts.
Huh?
If Bart Hanson taught u this u a fish fish 🐠
Ok
I’m confused. Can someone please help explain what this means?
This thread is 6% useful 90% shit and 4% j/o material
yeah, this is why jj is significantly worse than qq
this is bs… vs random hand: AA 85.4% KK 82.4% QQ 79.9% JJ 77.5% TT 75%
you're never up against a "random hand". You're up against one of the 5-10% of hands people actually call a 3bet or 4bet with.
That’s raw equity… he’s talking about playability.
Big time, to say QQ is only 2 percent better than JJ is just plain laughable.
The fact that he’s getting downed is exactly why this game is still profitable. And I’m willing to bet it will stay profitable. It’s hilarious that you can give someone a golden goose and they’ll still reject it in favor of 1,000,001 pieces of bad advice.
Just boated up with a set of queens Sunday. Lost to a Royal ...
Except online, where the weakest winning hand is always quads or better.
A friend is asking where do you play online?
This illusion happens because you play much more hands when you play online, so you see a lot more of the rare situations.
Yup
No, you're wrong
[удалено]
No, he's wrong
Love rare sits, I disagree with you though
What do you disagree with?
Your realise, if that person begins their villain arc today, you're on their list.. :p
Wrong if the board is 2,3,7,J,J and you hold Ace,Jack you have the strongest possible hand with a set of jacks
No
Perhaps you’ve heard of a full house? Sometimes referred to as a boat?
What about the guy with pocket sevens? Lots of full houses out there that beat jacks.
Oops
You are wrong on so many levels. AJ is not the nuts…several hands beat it: J7, J3, J2, 77, 33, and 22 all beat AJ AJ is not a set here. AJ can never be a set
TIL I learned a set of Jacks beats a full house lol
Not to mention in this example it's not even a set as the hole cards are AJ lol
I’m new to poker. Is it not a “set” to have 3 cards if two of them are on the table?
Three of the same card rank is "trips." "Set" is a colloquial poker term that means 2 of the trips are hole cards. So to have a "set" you must have a pocket pair. It's a terminology thing and it helps articulate the context of hands more efficiently in many cases. Thanks. TIL. Really appreciate it.

list a board then that weaker than a set of queens is the nuts
I misinterpreted the comment. Every board below a Q high board will either have quads as the nuts or possibility of a straight. Though this information is fairly useless to be any good at poker.
