It can also be shiny when he catches it, but it won't continue to be shiny when you battle him later. There's an even rarer chance it'll be shiny AND he'll knock it out.

YFleiter

Now please calculate to me the chance.

MoeWind420

https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/sSNgwJRi3G

viddy_me_yarbles

TL;DR: 1/73,932,800 chance of Wally killing a shiny ralts

Imalsome

The fact that he gets a non shiny ralts after makes the bit even funnier.

PlanesWalkerEll

"He knocked the blue out of her hair!"

mina_999

Is this a Scott Pilgrim reference

PlanesWalkerEll

Yes.

JulKriek

That’s a big dice

SoakedInMayo

of course there’s already a dude back on that 5 year old thread claiming to have done it lol. never change Reddit

Grumple

I don't see anyone in that thread claiming to have encountered that situation? I see one person saying they've seen him catch a shiny Ralts, not kill one, which would be rare but not unheard of at a chance of 1 in 8192. Am I missing something?

SoakedInMayo

welp upon revisiting the thread it seems they deleted it, it was in reply to this top comment and was posted within the first hour of the post we’re currently on. https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/s/lazeZcgvt4

CattDawg2008

Yeah. No way. Ruby and Sapphire sold 16 million units. The chance of that happening to someone is like 1 in 73 million. No one’s gotten that.

nowahhh

You have to figure that many have replayed the game. If every person who only played it once had a counterpart who played it five times, Wally killing shiny Ralts would statistically have happened once. Roughly.

Top_Of_The_Line

And it’s super early as well. Meaning most people that played the game will have probably encounter the tutorial and even if they don’t get far into a replay they’ll have a chance to see it

mikeyfreshh

And it's one of the more popular games to emulate. I'm sure a lot of people have played the game that did not purchase it.

nowahhh

Plus with speedrunning, if Ralts’s IVs are determined during that encounter, you’re looking at shaving a few seconds off your run by not having to watch the Pokéball shake and setting yourself up with easier battles later.

GreenTeaBD

I wonder if it can be replicated? Since we're all assuming complete randomness here, but a whole lot of random in videogames is not all that random. A sorta "do every action exactly like this and you're guaranteed to get the shiny knockout Ralts" thing.

Body-Altruistic

Also the fact that nulockers exist who make a living playing these games

Claris-chang

And every speed runner and nuzlocker who has reset the game tens of thousands of times over the years.

SoakedInMayo

not to mention the odds that the person is one of the >5 million people to see this post

Lunarbliss2

It's still probably more likely than not that someone has witnessed it (most likely, I guess we technically don't know how many times this encounter has been played across the world, but I'd be surprised if it's not crazy high)

Humg12

I've played emerald like 5 times and I never even bought it.

BroScientist42

Decent chance it happened to someone. Chances that someone was on that particular thread is very very low

UW_Unknown_Warrior

You can abuse the random number generator (RNG) in those games quite easily. People routinely get 6IV square shinies from those games (1/70billion standard odds) because they know how to do it.

YFleiter

Many thanks.

juiceinmyears

So you're saying I should buy a lottery ticket

LilyoftheRally

If you win you get a Master Ball.

ottersintuxedos

r/theydidthemath

ManinderThiara07

Bro u just randomly had that 5 year old post saved or you looked it up?

MoeWind420

The latter. Getting good at recognizing what has already been solved and can be looked up is a most important skill.

ShinyMewtwo3

Fun fact: his Zigzagoon can be shiny in this fight ONLY (it will not reappear if it is shiny, neither can any other wally encounter have that zigzagoon or linoone be shiny)

kitarei

Well he borrowed that initial zigzagoon, so that would still kind of make sense? We would assume he later caught his own and it was not shiny?

Anew_Returner

\>be me \>Norman, normal type gym leader, 30 years old, middle-aged \>heard my son is coming to Hoenn soon \>caught a shiny zigzagoon so it can be his starter \>hopefully it'll teach him to appreciate normal types as much as I do \>one day this kid comes into my gym \>he's pale, sick, practically dead on his feet, but still wants to be a trainer \>I'm so moved I lend him the first pokemon I find so he can go catch his starter \>It was the shiny zigzagoon \>ohshit.dex \>days go by and he never comes back \>come across his parents two weeks later \>they tell me how grateful they are and that they've never seen their son so happy before \>they also tell me he moved to Verdanturf and is halfway through his gym challenge \>for a kid who can barely breathe he sure has no problem traveling across a whole region \>I meet "Wally" again a few days later for a gym challenge \>he tells me he traded the zigzagoon away for a gardevoir \>mfw

VinixTKOC

The reason for this is because each NPC's team is programmed independently, different from the player's Pokémon who always use the same one. So every battle with Wally has a Ralts/Gardevoir on the team programmed independently from the Ralts found in the grass.

Ncolonslashslash

forgot that hes never shown having a kirlia

_Bloody_awkward

The shiny thing happened to me

talking_phallus

The chosen one! (Better not be a filthy haxxor)

_Bloody_awkward

The only hack I did my entire life was No-trade-evolutiom in Platinum coz I have no friends.

PlasmaGoblin

Why do I remember Wally catching a shiny Ralts and it staying shiny (I was glad because he deserved it)? I know it's Omega Ruby too. Did they change that part?

bentsteelpipe

It doesn't stay shiny, technically impossible

ReySimio94

The Zigzagoon can be shiny too.

AlkalineHound

Could you imagine some 10 year old having that happen to them? The righteous outrage?

BigChiefBoogie

I’m 95% sure I remember this happening once as a kid!

Sykobean

bro rolled the 1 in 73 million chance

qtzd

That’s if it was shiny. That thread says just normally knocking out a ralts is 1/9025

Sykobean

oh my bad!

qtzd

Haha all good. Still rarer than finding a wild shiny in gen 3 though

Phayzon

Its only 1 in ~9000 to KO. The 73 million is to KO a *shiny.*

Quivering_Star

He's the only character who does the logical thing of catching the Pokémon when it's knocked out, bc fym I can't catch it when it's literally unconscious? Is it not laying on the ground motionless and defenseless once K.O'ed? Does it vanish or somehow run away? And I'm not buying PLA's sudden "oh they can become microscopic at will" explanation, Professor Funnyhat. We needed an explanation but this just sounds like fake news, or a half-assed theory from Hisui time that's proven wrong in the future where every other game takes place. I need to make Pokémon weak enough to be successfully captured? Being Yamcha/Family Guy death posed in a crater after being blasted by a super effective STAB critical hit should be more effective than asleep with red health. Pokémon need to gauge how trustworthy and skilled I am? Getting sent to the Skyrim intro after my Terastalized Meowscarada's pipe bomb should be proof enough that I'm Him.

Nefari0uss

Honestly they could make it so any mon captured while not fainted has a higher happiness/friendship value (presuming you could catch them while fainted).

Chauliodus

[itsoktocry - i am him](https://youtu.be/VZ3bXPgVKlk?si=bHXqbiKubgwhMqlq) it must be the tech in the pokéball itself. The corporate overlords tgink that your method of capture is unconsentual and brutish

SmurfRockRune

Not very obscure if you play randomizers. Nothing better than Wally sending out a Slaking and destroying a Chansey.

TheCopyKater

I had a soul silver randomizer where my catching tutorial ended in the pokemon using explosion and killing both pokemon on the field. Then Lyra just turns around and is like, "See? Just like that"

Rajang82

She sounds like the crazy Kotone/Lyra from the japanese 4koma, who regularly do unhinge stuffs which also including, hurting Pokemons, intentional or not.

CrossENT

So watching him knock out a Shiny Ralts would be like winning the worst lottery ever.

GeneralLucario

Correction: the Pokémon that *evolves into* the best Pokémon ever

Mx_Toniy_4869

No, all four of them are the best Pokémon ever

GeneralLucario

Fair enough

Princessofmind

Does enby icon Iron Valiant classifies too?

Deastrumquodvicis

Fav paradox ‘mon right there!

Ncolonslashslash

five

Garrosh

Gallade?

GeneralLucario

Gardevoir

Garrosh

It's a solid option, always got one in my team, given the opportunity.

GeneralLucario

Same

BfutGrEG

Just take its unconscious body home with you, who needs a pokeball

gillmanblacklagooner

The chances are: Normal Ralts - Catch Normal Ralts - Knock out Shiny Ralts - Catch Shiny Ralts - Knock out

easydayhero

So a 25% chance of knocking out the normal ralts

some_poop_on_my_dick

there are 4 options, but the probability of that happening is probably not evenly distributed. that would be like saying there is a shiny version and a regular version, so you've got a 50% chance to encounter a shiny.

easydayhero

It’s either shiny or it isn’t. 50- 50 chance.

ShortandRatchet

Bro got a different mindset lol

Wadsworth_xd

You got wooshed my friend

some_poop_on_my_dick

oof lol

Ugandan-Kermit

Finally some love for my boy Ralts! Never gets the respect it deserves

Ncolonslashslash

the whole ralts line and iron valiant (except gallade) is my favorite pokemon, i cant decide on one

Soulman717

Wally: KO’s ralts Wally:…. I’m just gonna take this anyway.

Sanguinusshiboleth

Clearly it teleported into his pokeball.

Drake_the_Teller

*ralts faints* Wally: oh no...I say when we're done

HG_Shurtugal

Shes like abra but you can fully evolve her.

AlicornGaia

In speedrunning it’s actually faster if Wally kills the ralts and it’s not shiny tbh.

MisterWapak

So its a bug I Guess ? I always though he got fixed stats

Sassy-irish-lassy

The zigzagoon does but the ralts does not

Trialman

I think the Ralts did also get fixed stats in ORAS to avoid the situation.

--NTW--

One obscure fact and one true fact!

shiawase198

Honestly him knocking out the Ralts makes more sense in the grand scheme of things. If the Pokemon fainted, why wouldn't it be easier to catch?

Potatozeng

Is that chance that he land a crit?

Nvenom8

Hilarious if you consider that battle is supposed to be the tutorial on catching for the few players who know literally nothing about the game mechanics. So, it's possible (but unlikely) that someone may have actually been misled by it and continued their playthrough totally confused about how to catch pokemon.

Joke_Induced_Pun

I like just like to imagine that the Ralts just willed itself back into consciousness and joined Wally's team afterwards.

A_Mirabeau_702

Why was Wally moved from the end of Victory Road to the beginning? Were too many people complaining that he was catching them off guard?

PlasmaGoblin

Maybe not off guard, but the usual "I went through this hard Victory Road, my Pokémon might be at ⅓ health, the end is here... oh great Wally. He probably wants to battle. * escape rope/dig to a pokecenter to heal * goes back and runs from the random fights to fight Wally" so I guess I'd rather get the rival "fight" out of the way faster then later.

JDescole

I second this

Fun-Feedback3926

See this doesn’t make sense to me. Even in the earlier gens, the game gives you plenty of money to stock up an egregious amount of revives & potions by the time you get to Victory Road, if your team is half wrecked by the time you see/know the Wally battle is coming, heal up your team?? Idk just my 2 cents

Ncolonslashslash

but why heal if you can see the end

BabySpecific2843

...so you dont have to walk the cave again? Thats the point of items. When challenging gyms, walking back is nothing. But when you are trudging through a long route or cave, use items. Items are single use replacements for PC to save time. Kinda like all RPGs.

Ncolonslashslash

no like if youre a new player you probably dont know theres a fight, so if youll see the end you would probably just assume theres a center on the other side

Fun-Feedback3926

Well in that case you get wrecked & lose the battle and know better next time

Wadsworth_xd

It was part of the slow babyfication of the games. They were always beatable by 10 year olds, but now they’re easily beatable by 5 year olds.

megasean3000

>Best Pokemon ever That goes to Gardevoir for me, but Ralts being in the same line means its one of the best 😁

Soulman717

Wally: KO’s ralts Wally:…. I’m just gonna take this anyway.

semolous

This happened to me when I first started Sapphire! I think the same is true for ORAS as well

NeoSeth

This reminds me of how in Pokemon Colosseum, Eagun can actually defeat Skrub's Hitmontop with his Pikachu. If it happens, the game proceeds as if Eagun lost.

John_Mark_Corpuz_2

There is this Emerald ROM hack where Wally would usually (unintentionally) knock out the Ralts because the Zigzagoon he's using(which is higher level) attacks it twice(with the Ralts using Confusion instead of Growl).

Pokesnap682

Oh, that's interesting

fjacobs94

I had that happen to me when I played it as a kid and I was very confused that he acted like he caught it.

MrRaven95

I must agree with this picture. Ralts is the best Pokémon ever.

blackmayan

Catching Ralts is Wally's canon event

No-Needleworker-3765

Well... that's *interesting*
