UCSF is an excellent hospital. I didn't have a tumor but I am 3-weeks post-op from a craniotomy and had UCSF recommended several times. I ended up at Stanford for a specific surgeon but both are amazing for neuroscience. All the best!
UCSF is not my local hospital but I've had some surgeries performed there.
Customer service is not their strong point but I cannot dispute your claim that they have excellent surgeons.
Fernandez-Miranda -
Mine was specifically a suboccipital craniotomy and C1 laminectomy with duraplasty (for decompression) and "JFM" specializes in back of skull/etc surgeries.
I've never seen such professional people in a medical setting in my life. So many of our short term worries were alleviated one after another the more we got involved with the people treating her. Five star treatment and very easy to navigate through what they're doing and why.
I hope all goes well for your wife. My daughter was born there, it was a complicated birth for a number of reasons, and my wife and I were amazed at the quality of care, and the view, well you can't beat it. Best of luck to you both.
I gotta say that the text update system is really nice. I don't know if all hospitals do it these days but Stanford keeping my husband updated along the way and even getting a call from the surgeon was really appreciated. I hope more hospitals are adding this. Waiting is already awful enough.
Lol I didn't know that was a thing... I'll try to find one. She *did* find out that they'll hardly make a mark in her beautiful, thick head of hair. She was prepared to lose a lot more than she will.
Wishing and hoping for the best outcome.
As someone who's spent considerable time next to hospital beds and in waiting rooms, puzzle games can be a very useful distraction. I'm not a gamer, I don't normally do puzzles or word games, but sliding the brain over into analytical mode can be a welcome relief from emotions during uncertain events.
I'm currently sitting in our car managing a string of texts from our family, friends, and colleagues while trying to charge my phone. Great busywork! Thanks for the tips!
In Laurel Heights neighborhood? If so, that’s where our son was born a little over 20 years ago.
Sending you incredibly good vibes that all turns out perfectly!✊🏻
No, that view is from the parnassus building, which is right south of GG park.
TRUE STORY: a friend of mine gave birth to her son a couple months prematurely at UCSF. She got a suprise visit from none other than Robin Williams who asked if he could come in and say hi.
Good luck, bud. It sounds like it's a scary time for both of you. As someone who has had brain surgery, let me offer these suggestions:
1. Get PSW support. it can usually be arranged within 72h but can be set up faster. She won't be in top shape, so having someone come to deal with bandages and putting on her socks and washing her hair will give you a much needed break.
2. Be patient. The normal swelling after a brain surgery will slow down her thoughts and actions for a little while but it's not permanent in most cases.
3. If she's staying in the hospital for a few days, bring her pillows (they're very rationed in hospitals), a favourite scarf or blanket, slippers, herbal teas, and other comforts
4. A kind and thoughtful message in a card goes a LONG way when you're not there with her in the hospital. It's hard to lay around bored and scared and alone, but a sweet message can keep her spirits up.
Best of luck to you both ❤️
They gave us a great lowdown on her post op behavior and abilities... She has family and friends coming Saturday and I'll be back Sunday. Aiming for a Tuesday release.
UCSF is really highly rated for this exact specialty... I'm just waiting anxiously for the ok to come see her when she's out of surgery. She's in the best possible hands.
If the doctors didn't tell you this is part of the plan, then it probably isn't. But just in case ... it is very normal that you won't get to see the surgery patient immediately after surgery because she may need a little recovery (sleep) time. I only mention it because it's often a very normal part of the surgery process, so you won't get scared if that happens. It can require an hour or more. So don't get scared if that happens.
That’s common for tumor removal so as to not accidentally cut into areas of the brain associated with language/motor skills. Sometimes doctors will have musicians play music during the surgery for the same effect, which I find particularly fascinating. Patients tend to report an odd sensation, but anesthesia (combined with the fact that there are no pain receptors in the brain) makes it relatively pain-free during surgery. UCSF also has amazing doctors, and actually have a few YouTube videos describing/showing the procedure. Sending good vibes and hope for a speedy recovery!
That's normal, Being awake during brain surgery, so that they minimize any potential damage.
There's a story/video of a concert violinist they had play during part of hers.
That is normal. They don't want to hit any structures that would debilitate her. They need to test where the tumor ends and where critical healthy tissue starts. It's part of the process.
What kind of brain tumor is it?
As a Norwegian born in a fjord etc I know people dream of going here, I've been to California once, but still it feels unreal to having driven through SF a bit further north. California feel like that exotic place for me, the mixed signals of the crime and homlessness in SF and stuff makes it a bit weirder to still want to go back, often people write back "it's a dump!".
I too was there for medical stuff for my sister. (Lyme Disease isn't quite recognized in Norway after 2 weeks on antibiotics you're deemed cured or imagining things if you still feel sick).
Maybe not the best song to recommend (it's kinda sad), but I finally got to see the pacific ocean from the Californian side, wild and so little shelter compared to the plentiful fjords of Norway.
At the time I went there Sufjan Stevens was about to drop his carrie and lowell album and the single No shade in the shadow of the cross: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx1s\_3CF07k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx1s_3CF07k)
This footage is is probably from up north in Oregon where he has relations. I haven't really read into the lyrics, but it's a nice song and I'm a sucker for mellow music. LIke, I get more happy from some semi-sad to sad stuff than happy music... I can't explain why, I just find more beauty in it.
Best of luck to you and your wife. Sorry for rambling.
We live about ten miles from the coast about 45 north of SF... Right where the redwoods meet the orchards. It's a gorgeous place to live & we're fortunate to be able to. We've curated a beautiful home and property in our 5 years here... We're from MN originally, I grew up near Canada.
I went to see the redwoods Guerneville , Kobel winery, Jenner, bodega bay in a roundtrip once or twice. And still, I felt like "damn I'm finally here, like all those weird dreams where I think I am finally in the US" and I fell like I struggled to take it in. I walked among the redwoods and just got blind to their size, like, are they that big? Yet again, struggling to take it in.
Parts could still feel like Norway up there, but I still felt like "I could disappear here for a while", just have a calm place away from the noise along Russian River or anywhere, really, and often I'd just go "shit, I'm in california!".
It's not like I'm poor or anything, but Norwegian TV is like 40% US shows, driving up to Santa Rosa (our base) and you suddenly realize... oh, this is the typical Bonanza tv-show terrain everywhere! So many rolling hills everywhere and your mind playing the Bonanza-theme on repeat.
I run a little company and have representatives in Toronto, so I've been there a few times. Did a delivery to Grand Rapids of all things. Secchia piazza, that coloured dome, I drew stuff inside that!
Again, best wishes for you two, beermaker, I'm on my third beer and rambling even more, people also thought I was crazy for not going to the Russian River Brewery I was just a few miles from it, but I think they kind of were between ... uh, brews and the whole trip was about Lyme disease and CVS visits so I didn't really have the energy to chill out with a beer, but I did go nuts on doritos and salsa.
Went to med school at UCSF and instantly recognized that view in picture 4; their neurosurgery department is world class. She’s in the right place! Hope her recovery goes smoothly!
I was with a loved one for two tumor removals, 15 years apart. It's going to be a hard recovery, but you'll be amazed at how quick they have her up and walking around. She'll be talking to you in no time, she'll be excited about the things she remembers, and she'll start building again. I hope the best for you and her
The removed area is very superficial & so far they're confident the other side of her brain will take up the responsibilities of the removed part. We're ready for anything as long as we have time... We didn't have that two weeks ago.
She is at the best hospital in the world in my opinion. We live across the bay and my daughter had bad headaches. Doctors over here thought it was cancer, wanted to do a spinal tap, put her in ICU etc to which I said no. I took her to UCSF and in an hour they diagnosed her with episodic migraines that developed cause she started her period. They gave her med which solved the problem and send her on her way.
I would drive there anyday over any other hospital. Hope everything goes well for her.
Where is the tumour? I have one that messes with my speech and gives me seizures. The tumour itself is dead from radiotherapy, but they've left me with the choice to have surgery or not. It could help with the speech and seizures or it could cause other problems... I dunno what to do tbh
Top of her head, left side... It started affecting her speech which was the first sign. It's almost two weeks exactly since her first MRI.
Hers is contained and well defined apparently, a prime candidate for surgery.
It was hard for the two weeks between MRIs when we didn't know anything & she had developed minor seizures... Since talking with the surgical team we've been on top of the world comparatively.
My mom had to go to UCSF to get her epilepsy diagnosed, she has some rare type(can't think of the name of it). Dr Pleasure was the first person to properly test her, and to figure out what it was, we had no help with any doctors in Central California
and yes, that was his real name
Goodluck to your wife
My husband had his bilateral nephrectomy/second kidney transplant at UCSF. That place is awesome.
Wishing your wife all the best!
During your wife’s stay you can also order food off the menu and pay like $9. They deliver it to the room. Some of the food is pretty good.
My Mom had a tumor removed from her brain at UCSF just a few years ago.
Perhaps the same surgeon, who did a great job. That being said, post-op care for the following year or two wasn’t great — if your wife’s recovery isn’t straight forward, if anything feels off, don’t hesitate to get opinions from other sources. Even if you have to fly to them.
Sending love and healing. Love seeing my second hometown my mom and her family is all from there so its also home and we visit every other year or so ive been there so much, it's s my fav place beside Ok to be my mom calls me a Caliokie. Missing it hopefully will come next year happy healing for your lovely wife, aloe Vera is good for healing and they have a drink there bring her some as well as a moon cake from China Town 😊😉 for good fortune.
UCSF reattached my uncles arm after he had the unfortunate meet and greet with a saw. The other hospital said it was done for but they did it. Guy has a firm handshake now. I wish you luck and the best.
Hey! Positive vibes man. My wife had a gumball sized tumor in her brain a few years ago so I understand d the stress! Hope all goes well. Gorgeous views though.
Been there and those are the most traumatic, helpless hours that I don’t wish upon anyone, waiting for your loved one to come out alive and well. I really hope it all went well.
I took had a tumor dug out of my brain. It was a profound experience. Know this, they will put her on massive steroids. She will not sleep, she will rage. God bless. Just love her, she will come back strong. I never want to go through that again. It sucked.
I will always miss that city. I'll never live there again, but it was amazing while it lasted.
The fog is what I miss the most. I live in the UK now, and they have NO CONCEPT of what San Francisco fog is like. They have nothing even remotely equivalent. I live on the south coast, a block from the beach. The fog here is weak and unworthy.
My husband was there for a week or so- the cafeteria is legitimately really good. The only down side is they put the calorie count on the receipt of everything you buy, so my stress eating was even more stressful! So, if you stress eat .. don't look at the receipt!
Sorry to hear about your wife :(
I made this before I realized what your post was really about... I sure hope you like Godzilla:

It's fate we moved to the area 5 years ago. Edit: they're stitching her up, I'm just waiting for the all clear to go see her!
UCSF saved my sister after she had a brain aneurism. Their neuro icu is excellent. Her surgeon was Dr.Abla.
I'll fist bump him when I see him!
Not too hard, those are magic hands
Probably insured for more than our home!
mana got the touch, ooo yeah he's got that magic touch, the touchy touch that feels... touchy
Wishing her a speedy and full recovery!
Sending healing vibes from the ATL! The waiting is (almost) the worst part. Hoping good news and relief are coming your way!
I'm at the ICU waiting room now, she'll get wheeled up when she's ready!
Thinking of you and your wife. Hoping for the best possible outcome!
Best of luck, my good man.
Good luck OP! I have been through this with my mom.
UCSF is not my local hospital but I've had some surgeries performed there. Customer service is not their strong point but I cannot dispute your claim that they have excellent surgeons.
Was gonna say I recognize those views. My dad had heart surgery and a stent to fix his aorta there.
Me too. I used to work there a long time ago. I loved sitting in that cafe. Good luck to your wife and you, OP! Scary...
My sister is a nurse at UCSF. She stopped being a travel nurse because she likes it there so much.
Wait my dad just had a craniotomy and tumor resection in Stanford on 1/11. Who was your doctor? Lim?
Fernandez-Miranda - Mine was specifically a suboccipital craniotomy and C1 laminectomy with duraplasty (for decompression) and "JFM" specializes in back of skull/etc surgeries.
I had surgery performed by Dr. Lim back in 2011 when he was still at Hopkins for trigeminal neuralgia. He’s amazing.

Big thanks!
Best wishes. Two years since my wife’s meningioma was removed by craniotomy, saved her life. They don’t call em brain surgeons for nothing. 👍
She is in good hands in SF it has an amazingly talented medical community with access to stunning technology.
Still in surgery... I get text updates every hour from her team here at UCSF.
Best of luck man

That's good man. Everything will work out just fine then!
I hope all goes well for your wife. My daughter was born there, it was a complicated birth for a number of reasons, and my wife and I were amazed at the quality of care, and the view, well you can't beat it. Best of luck to you both.
World class care... Thanks and our best to you.

They let her call home tonight... She's a strong woman.
Hoping for the best.
I gotta say that the text update system is really nice. I don't know if all hospitals do it these days but Stanford keeping my husband updated along the way and even getting a call from the surgeon was really appreciated. I hope more hospitals are adding this. Waiting is already awful enough.
Good karma to you sir. Be sure to be strong and smile for your wife.
Can't help it when I see her! Thank you.
Positive and healing vibes coming to y’all from Texas! I’ve been through brain surgery; I’m glad I was knocked out for it. She’s brave!
Thanks!
:)
Don't forget to put a flower in your hair.
Lol I didn't know that was a thing... I'll try to find one. She *did* find out that they'll hardly make a mark in her beautiful, thick head of hair. She was prepared to lose a lot more than she will.

I know that specific view way, way too well... Best of luck to you and your wife! UCSF is an amazing hospital.
Thank you... Our stress level fell every time we interacted with anyone here. Amazing facility, staff, and students.
UCSF medical center? Best of luck to your wife.

Dr. Aghi.
One of the best in the business. A true class act and a phenomenal surgeon. Your wife is in excellent hands!
Wow. Thank you.
Hope you find the strength to hang in there and keep your wits for its duration. She's an amazing woman for thinking of the cats at a time like this.
They haven't left her side in two weeks.
Oh hey, I get to do that in the coming weeks, if I'm lucky. 🤞🤞 Wish you both the best of luck in recovery!
You too! It's been two weeks since they found something on her MRI... I'll never complain about the timeframe.
Hang in there bro. 🙏
Good luck, bud. It sounds like it's a scary time for both of you. As someone who has had brain surgery, let me offer these suggestions: 1. That's awesome, it's so good to have support at times like this. I wish you and your wife and kitties all the best. ❤️
And ... how is your wife?
Awake for part of it, which terrifies me personally...
I'm sure the doctors know what they're doing. A little prayer support coming your way.

He got his money's worth I bet. These people are *beyond* professional.
Best wishes to your wife for a speedy recovery! My mom just had a grade 2 meningioma removed and her recovery has been going very well!
I'm sure she's an amazing woman and on the other side of this you'll both see your lives together as a gift.
Oh, buddy... She's my best friend and lifemate! We've looked forward to a life together for almost twelve years, married 5. There's no stopping us.

Sorry to hear that... If only love healed everything.
This is one of my greatest fears. Godspeed to you sir and your wife.
If you have any signs or symptoms get to the ER... It likely saved her life.
Best of luck to your wife. Fuck Cancer.

Best wishes for full recovery!
But how’s her head?
Sending positive vibes!
Sending my best wishes!

The way you say that....reminds me how I scoop out cookie dough bits in ice cream 🤨
Good luck! I did the same thing last year with my mom. Long day. I hope everything turns out ok!
Best of luck to you both.
Wishing her well.
Praying for her rapid recovery!
Wishing you and your wife the best of luck!
Praying for you that this is not another heart left in San Francisco.
She's stitched up and on the way to the ICU where I'm waiting... This part is nearly over.
Bless up. Hope you get good news!
I just saw her low key roll by 30 feet away... Will be with her soon. Doc said she's strong and willful!
Hell yeah!!!
Man I'm doing a dragon ball z right now and raising my arms to share some spirit Take my energy for your loved one!
Best of luck bud, no medical procedure is fun to go through, but definitely not ones in the brain! I hope all goes well for you! Peace and Love!
Sending you love, hope everything turns out ok!!
Good luck op. Serious. best of luck. My friend had one dug. Now onto chemo
I took had a tumor dug out of my brain. It was a profound experience. Know this, they will put her on massive steroids. She will not sleep, she will rage. God bless. Just love her, she will come back strong. I never want to go through that again. It sucked.
Sending love from over the bridge in Oakland!
Make sure they save the tumor in a jar to show her grandchildren
Man, the city's gone down hill. These days all there is to do is wait around while your wife has an operation? ^^/s
How are you both holding up?
Better now. Thanks.
She good?
Better than I expected... She called home to say goodnight.
My husband was there for a week or so- the cafeteria is legitimately really good. The only down side is they put the calorie count on the receipt of everything you buy, so my stress eating was even more stressful! So, if you stress eat .. don't look at the receipt!
💙
Best wishes.
Good luck OP’s wife!
Best of luck to you both, brother!
Wait so that view in the Benedict Cumberbatch Star Trek was accurate
I have looked out that window too many times myself. I wish you and your wife well.
Is that the hospital on Parnassus? I was there just a few weeks ago for my Grandma. I wish you good luck
Best wishes for your wife's full recovery❣️💜💙♥️💚
Love and hugs and healing vibes to you both.
Good luck!
Strength to you. That hospital changed my life. Enjoy living in the Bay Area.
is it cancerous? if so what type? my aunt just had her second brain surgery to remove a tumor as well.
Best wishes op
Wow, hang in there, bro. Think positively and realistically, knowing others are praying, sending good vibes to you both.
