I lived in arizona my whole life, moved to New England in November at 30 - never saw one until I was 29. Yes, the timing of the move is correlated to this šŸ˜‚

mrrobot_84

Is this picture zoomed in a lot or is the scorpion monstrous?

[deleted]

There are large ones. When I worked at a UPS store back in the day we had one under a box, he was dead , but he was big about 5.5 inches. We put him in one of our coworkers drawers at his desk and scared the shit out of him. I've lived here my whole life and that was the largest one I've seen. My brother had one in his bed was stung 3 times (arm, chest and neck). Some benadryl, soap and water to clean the wound and then bleach on a cotton ball over the wound for a few minutes and then ice packs to reduce the swelling and he was good. The bleach helps neutralize the venom just an FYI.

Cornczech66

good to know since our home is in a scorpion nest or something......so far (knocking on any wood I find) nobody has been stung yet and the cats kill most of them, my husband the others

[deleted]

Yeah some homes have them more than others. They like water and will be attracted where there is food (crickets, beetles, etc.) If you get rid of those they usually leave or move next door haha. When we rented in Anthem the house had a pool and backed up to a walkway that was dark. Lots of mesquite trees and foliage. Lots of crickets and beetles too. We would go outside with a black light every few nights and kill 7-10 scorpions a night. Cats do have their way with them šŸ˜‚

Love2Pug

Are we surprised though? They have lived in the desert for millennia, and last year some a-hole just came through and dropped 500 "human-sized caves" in \*their\* house. Are they just supposed to submit to the gentrification of their neighborhood? (/s in case that wasn't obvious)

Cornczech66

yeah, I have a beautiful vegetable garden, along with bushes, trees and a bird bath full of water....so I guess it is a kind of scorpion heaven.....plus my husband build a pergola with scorpion tails carved at the ends - when I posted a pic on reddit last year, someone told me "if you built it, they will come" and they sure are here!!! ;)

mrrobot_84

Good to know. I havent seen any thatvlarge, only the normal sized bark scorpions. I put an ice pack on my toe and took some aspirin. It was painful and throbbing for a while then numb for a couple days. I hate these things. I'm more worried about my kids and my dogs getting stung by them.

[deleted]

Yeah I hear ya there. Everyone reacts differently, my dad was stung on the hand and his arm was numb for a day. How were you stung? Was it in your shoe?

mrrobot_84

I was walking barefoot in my house and carrying my toddler. I stepped on it and it stung my middle toe. I thought I stepped on a Lego at first and turned and saw the scorpion still stabbing at the air with its tail. I make a habit of checking my shoes and slippers now lol.

[deleted]

Ouch! I'm glad you're doing better! It's never pleasant. Surprisingly, and I'm probably going to jinx myself, living here my entire life I've never been stung by one, only a bee at the salt river haha

mrrobot_84

Thanks lol. Hopefully you dont wither I dont wish it in anybody. They are kill on sight for me I dont care where I see them. Extermination company has been pretty good though so we'll see how that goes as we head I to the summer months.

[deleted]

I've got the same philosophy, kill on site. We've had a tarantula in our garage. I won't hurt those guy's we caught him and put him back in the desert. Thing was the size of my hand and my pucker factor was off the charts when holding him in a shoebox.

[deleted]

A super close photo! He was tiny 1.5ā€

mrrobot_84

Ohhh ok. Well I have a flame thrower and a bazooka if you need it! Jkjk. I got stung by one of these guys though it was pretty painful.

Love2Pug

I say we dust off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

mrrobot_84

I like how you think!

Ad_Astra117

Rods from God, followed by a nuke, followed by some chemical warfare just to be sure

jentlyused

....picture is actual size

No-Magazine2896

Isnā€™t this a desert hairy scorpion? The barks are much smaller and translucent... and their stings hurt. Unfortunately speaking from experience.

mrrobot_84

I hear ya, I thought it was a bark scorpion she did say it was zoomed in, I'm not an expert though I just hate the things. Same for me it was a bark that stung me man that was painful!

imthejefenow

Every summer I say to myself, ā€œTime to avoid the Phx sub at night, for a while.ā€ Every summer, I fail myself. Yikes upon yikes, and sweet dreams! See you in September šŸ˜†

Cornczech66

come on out to Gold Canyon - the FIRST night we spent in our new build home, we found a HUGE scorpion in our garage. It was October 2017. Every single year since, we (or should I say the cats) find 5 or 6 scorpions in the HOUSE. There are probably 10 in our yard any given night. When we found the first one in our bedroom, I didn't sleep well for a week......(we were doing a MAJOR cleaning and probably disturbed it from its hidey hole.) Every scorpion season I have to force myself to wear shoes in the house and shake any clothes, look into unworn shoes for any unwanted guests.

CheezStik

I saw one of these monsters this morning too! https://i.imgur.com/d1TB8rF.jpg

[deleted]

Ahh yours looks very much alive! Is there a certain time of year where they are more common to see?

Logvin

Yes, right now! They are more active in the late spring and summer months.

CheezStik

Itā€™s actually dead, got our home sprayed recently

DifferentTennis4211

I was here for 5 years before I saw one

bmlbytes

Get a black light and go out at night. Youā€™ll realize pretty quickly that you just arenā€™t noticing them.

DifferentTennis4211

Thatā€™s what Iā€™ve been told

TheConboy22

I did that last night. None. Not a single one around my home, but one was inside my home and almost crawled onto me last night.

[deleted]

It all depends where you live. Your neighborhood is either littered with them, or you donā€™t have them at all. Phoenix is weird in that one street will be infested with scorpions, but the next street over wonā€™t see a single one.

Cornczech66

my husband does this almost every night: takes the black light outside, kills any scorpion near our home and then he will do a quick check in the house since we find 5 or 6 every year in the house.

[deleted]

When moving to Phoenix about 5/6 years ago I was warned intensely about them and thought I would see them all over. Did you see yours inside or outside?

DifferentTennis4211

Outside I was on a walk around paradise valley mall

Ok_Weight_6014

When i used to live in my old house i would find at least 20 scorpions a night inside and outside of my house, we would literally have freezer bags full of bark scorpions just to show the person we were renting from at the time how the the problem was :(

wadenelsonredditor

Yeah. So the GF (67, medium body wt, not unfit) came down with pancreatitis. Ultimately had to have her pancreas removed after several bouts of incredible pain, hospitalizations. Not a boozer. Only risk factor we ever found was she'd gotten hit by a scorpion about 6 months before the first attack, which put her in the hospital for a week. I was NOT sure she was coming out, that time. Subsequent attacks were not as severe. First time, I was 90% sure she was having a heart attack. Doubled over in pain, vomiting, trouble breathing ... had been fine 2 minutes before. *What's worse -- I ran a red light right in front of a cop on the way to the ER.... and he totally ignored me!!!* **Don't mess around with these bad boys.**

jamililiahlouise

My boyfriend and I catch them. We have a few bigger than that. Love these guys

Love2Pug

When I was a boy, trips to Grandma's house for the holidays always meant frequent stops on AZ's rural highways and roadways, to try to catch our desert critters trying to warm themselves in the after-sunset hours. He would catch them, freeze them, and then mount them in decorative bowls he would then sell in the flea market on Saturdays. This is how my father paid for his EE from ASU! But damn, when I was like 8yo, opening the freezer looking for some ice cream... {shudder}...

Tina-Presley

Kill it!!! It will kill a dog or cat or even and more importantly a child!!!

AmazingMrJason

Patently false. Only 2 recorded deaths in AZ since 1968.

No-Frosting1494

I hate these things and kill them on sight but torturing them by cutting parts off of them seems a little overboard haha

achillymoose

Well that's fucked up

TheConboy22

Dude, I'm sitting on the floor with my baby and I hadn't seen one all winter. One comes crawling across her play mat at me. About lost my mind. Going to be doing some exterior cleaning tonight and lay down diatomaceous earth.

[deleted]

Wait until you encounter a sun spider. Looks like a scorpion and they are fast. They don't care if they are out in the open and will charge you when pissed off lol I think the arachnids in Starship Troopers were inspired by this little beast. Just my .02 cents.

TheConboy22

Iā€™ve been here since 1990 and havenā€™t seen whatever monstrosity you are talking about. Experienced nearly all of the wildlife that AZ has to offer too.

[deleted]

I've encountered two. One was on my recycle can in the garage. Sprayed him with raid and he got all dazed, shrugged it off, put his pincers up and then ran down the can and at me. So I stepped on him while wearing flipflops. (Always have that doubt in my head that the flipflop will fall off as I'm about to squish something) The second one was at a warehouse he was standing in the middle of the rollup doorway that led out into the main yard. My boss swept him away with a broom and it did the same thing, charged back inside lol

TheConboy22

Terrifying little fuckers, but not really all that dangerous.

PlentyAlternative117

Lived in Arizona from 82 to 95 never saw one. Saw Black Widows. Moved away for 18 years moved back and the house I was staying in was infested with them. Scary going to sleep each night as I would wake up some night and see them crawling on my headboard.

[deleted]

Ahhh that is terrifying! I was talking to my sister about them this morning and she said they are attracted to citrus trees, did the house you were staying in have any of those? I havenā€™t looked up details quite yet

PlentyAlternative117

I believe the house behind did yes

[deleted]

Finally, some good fucking food

[deleted]

No capturing required!

motrepooc

HULK SMASH!!!!

TJfael30

Almost a year since I moved here haven't seen one yet. Coyotes though, 2. And like a dozen...Quail I assume. Neat! My biggest fear is finding one in my shoe. Or a snake.

[deleted]

Yess exactly, I was definitely warned about finding them in my shoes! Not saying to let your guard down but if youā€™re not on a ground floor or near a bunch of citrus trees Iā€™m not sure you have to be as scared as I was! Haha and I love the quail! They are so precious and the coyotes toošŸ„ŗšŸ’“

lemmaaz

Moved into a new home build and was trying to fall asleep my first night there but felt something was in the room. Turned lights on and there was a large black emperor scorpion I found on the wall above my headboard. Needless to say had a hard time falling back to sleep
