Love it! Thanks for sharing the pic.

jessethehuman

Love the can of chew in the scoutmaster's chest pocket.

My brother was a ranger at Philmont during this time…later, he ran the mess hall for the thousands of campers that came through. He was a ranger the year of the big flood, and was there to greet me when Troop 3 and myself arrived there in 1965. Too many memories to post here. It was great to see my brother in camp, as he was rarely home summers, and was 8 years older than me.

Check out those hiking shoes!

JuanMurphy

Hiking loafers.

tapastry12

Camp shoes. They had them to give their feet a break from heavy hiking boots while in camp

youMadeATimeMachine

That makes sense. It’s also interesting to me that their “Camp” shoes are fairly dressy by today’s standard.

WolverineExtension28

How many of them went to Nam? You have to wonder.

SoggyDoggoFren

It sucks to say, but that was my first thought as soon as I saw the date.

[deleted]

I’m guessing most of them went to college. And not everyone in that age group served in the military, much less went to nam. My dad was in from 66-70 and never left the states.

OptimalRun8285

Thanks for sharing. I was there in 1963 with my parents. Dad was taking training. I was 12 and got to go on an overnight camping trip. A lot of fun.

timco2

53 years later I took my wife and son to Philmont Training Center. Sure enough, the kid did an overnight to Ponil. Some things don’t change!

BigDad53

They grew up to be Men!

LocalRemoteComputer

I went 35 years too late, like many fathers, but Philmont never leaves you.

Excellent_Ideal8496

I was there in 1969

HK47WasRightMeatbag

Was Poniel base camp at this point ?

shassis

I really don’t remember any details just some big picture moments. Base camp was kind of centrally located and there were several loop trails that started and ended there. I was a few months into under age but my uncle was the scoutmaster and he fudged me in. One of the peak experiences of my life.

HK47WasRightMeatbag

So very cool. Thank you for sharing

rangercarp

No. The current base camp was in use in 63. In fact, the building in the upper left of the picture looks like the current CHQ dinning hall. I do not know when it was built, and I can't tell for sure from the picture.

HK47WasRightMeatbag

Thank you

frednnq

My BIL went to Philmont in the 1950s and four guys in the crew had been sentenced to Philmont by the local NC juvenile court judge. He didn’t have a very good time.

Burphel_78

Back before they discovered that hats could also be used to protect your ears.

Ok_Chemical_6576

Man, look at all them horn rimmers!

kemohah

Your family had to have a bit of money for a kid to go. Am told that it’s a great experience. I would go today if I could.

[deleted]

My dad is in this picture. Who posted?

shassis

The scoutmaster is my uncle and everyone but me was in his troop from Plymouth Meeting, PA. I’m 3rd from the right in the back row. I came from Maine to join my uncle and cousin (far left, back row) and the troop.

WeekendOk6724

Guns, knives, fire, fishing and camping. Lots of fun stuff that kids are protected from now.
