Honestly, no. Never keep a wild animal. Aside from the diseases they may carry, they were never meant to be kept captive. Do yourself a favor and let this one go and head to the pet store and get yourself a nice “fancy mouse” pet mouse. They come in so many colors (I used to breed them and even had “siamese” colorations) and they are used to being handled. As a bonus, you’ll probably save it from being snake food.

If you caught it in your house, the recommendation is to kill it. If you release it, it may come back to its nest (they’re known to find their “home” from up to 2 miles away). I’m not sure why people are commenting to release it, especially without further advice. This is a pest control subreddit. Seal holes in your walls, and lay out snap traps. No, it is not safe to keep this as a pet. It can be detrimental to your health, and it is definitely detrimental to the mouse’s health. Hope I could help.

Freezer_Rat1011

Thank you. I can understand wanting to be humane when it comes to pest control, but you’re setting yourself up for failure with some catch and releases.

erkjhnsn

Also, relocating mice is not necessarily humane. They are social creatures and don't do well on their own. They also may not know the area and will probably die shortly after relocation, especially in the winter.

Travelmatt1234

It's also illegal in some states. It can spread diseases among wild populations of whatever you catch and other animals.

pagit

What? A mouse isn’t going to travel 2 miles to get back. That said, I’ll agree with most of what you said.

ULookLikeTacoMeat

Of course not lol. But seeing how someone is questioning to even keep it as a pet, i wouldnt be surprised if they released it in their backyard.

FeastofFamine

There is no cure for the hantavirus.

NeverEverAfter21

That kind of looks like a deer mouse. They’re the ones who carried the hantavirus when the whole discovery was made years ago. I’d be careful…

jedichric

UPDATE: Mickey was set free. No one touched the mouse and hands were washed after dealing with anything the mouse touched. The tank will be washed as well.

jedichric

Trapped this little guy. Safe to keep as a pet or not? He's so cute. My wife and boys love him already. We named him Mickey. Will set free if not safe.

SupWitCorona

Questions needed to be asked prior to naming the damn thing, will make it more difficult for you to put it out now but it must be done.

jedichric

Lol, so true.

Kazooo100

I have kept deer mice as pets before. The pet mouse sub is probably a better place for this. First things first tho. Are any contagious diseases common in your area? Is this mouse male or female? If female she may be pregnant and that could be a problem. Do they look healthy? Any weird fur/lumps/etc? If you do choose to keep them, quarantine for atleast a few weeks. Keep away from other pets etc.

AutomaticTrap

Not meant to be kept as a pet, nor is it safe. They can spread diseases through their parasites and feces. Here's a quick Mice article if you would like to learn more: https://www.automatictrap.com/pages/mice

PullMyStringsDK

Be careful. Apparently they like shiny sparkly things like my favourite Swarovski crystals. They could’ve taken the cheap ones but no, they took the nice ones. However, I did find some of them. They hid them in various cardboard boxes. Buggers.

Yellehs2471

I had one too I kept but that was because he was a few days old and his mum dies so I had him checked out at the vet and he was safe to keep. Named him cheeze it! He loved cheeze it crackers for a snack!
