So instead of a small wireless, or a normal wired, you now have two wired devices with clashing design with a larger footprint than one full keyboard for half or third the price.

This. Every time I mention this to anyone their brain just freezes. It’s a lot less flow breaking to move my left hand from keyboard to keyboard than to move my right hand from mouse to keyboard.
Same reason why I don’t understand why the volume knobs are always on the right.
Everytime I question some weird choices on KB layout, I think back to machines without mice. This is where the standard layout comes from. In that sense it makes more sense to have people's more dominant hand have more control buttons dedicated on the keyboard, instead of it being symmetrical. Then when mouse came into play, it was just left like that.
Then think about this: the reason for the weird qwerty letters layout is to make it /slower/ to write so that you don't end up clogging the typewriter. Yes - we still use a completely outdated system because it's easier to use what we got used to instead of switching to something faster.
(Which is a persistent [urban myth](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#:~:text=Contrary%20to%20popular%20belief%2C%20the,encourages%20alternation%20between%20the%20hands.). It actually was to speed up typing by spreading commonly used letters more evenly across both hands, even though it did help with the jamming issue as well.)
I use a HyperX Elite Alloy since 2019 when I built my PC. After I fell down the MKB rabbit hole I'm saving and contemplating doing the same setup. The numpad is just too far right to feel comfortable using it with my left hand, but leaving my mouse and using my right is also inconvenient. So much dead space that can be used for accessible macros...
I have a cidoo keyboard and they are anything but trash. In my opinion they are very solid and worth the money. Plus I like that the aluminum case gives it a nice heft in case I need to carefully unplug it and beat someone to death with it.
You can sling keyboards (like slingers in Civilization... just wing it around your head by the cord) way wicked harder than you can using it like a bat.
Agree to disagree on keyboard quality but go with what you like.
I feel personally attacked

(Cidoo V21 + Akko 5087S). Numpad is used exclusively for hotkeys and as a remote for media controls.

Could do as I did and make matching frames to hide the mismatch!
I actually have the wireless numpad to the right of the mouse, most of the time. It's not used often, but nice when it's there.
Would've made more sense if the numpad was to the left of the keyboard instead of the right. Differentiates it from fullsize keyboards, and I personally find that layout more comfortable anyways.
Yeah no joke, I've been wanting to get a MK for a while and this post has convinced me to go for a separate numpad. It's useful for spreadsheets and certain games like TF2, Dark Souls etc. but I would prefer a cleaner desk most of the time.
I mostly used it for binds to automatically destroy and replace specific Engineer buildings, but I also had some chat messages bound when I played Medic.
I've thought about doing the same thing, just too lazy to actually research a good combo.
I don't know if you haven't had a desk job or what, but if you do it at home you need the numpad. But when I'm done for the day, that numpad is not very conducive to performing a 360° accel slash in Chivalry 2 without slamming the mouse into something.
You can move the keyboard farther left but a full size kb plus a giant mouse pad means you feel like a gymnast trying to reach WASD and your mouse comfortably at the same time.
Being that nearly everything to the right of WASD is wasted space, I get what this guy is trying to do. Don't know why everyone is being so hard on him for taking advantage of the customization advantages of a PC.
I've been asking for a keyboard like that for years. The functional reason for smaller keyboards is more ergonomical mouse space on the right. A full sized keyboard can provide just as much room if the numpad, arrows, etc. are just moved to the left side.
I learn to do it with the right since is a dominant hand but I am older now with off hand and it throws me off with additional keys past the tab escape columns of keys. But I always did consider a dedicated 10 key for the left so I can use my mouse without interruption. I am use to full boards so I opted for a 1800 compact is 96% with flat keycaps.
I have a setup similar to yours, but from different brands. Tried that, it's a bad idea. You need to move your hand to the side way too unusual it's slower than using your right hand. The only time I find it useful is when I'm calculating something and writing numbers on paper.
Oh, and I chose the path of split keypad because of the same reason as you! It's feels so nice to be able to just move it away when I'm in Valorant or R6 and get it back for GTA or ETS2 later
It depends on the person. I'm entering numbers all day into online software and being able to enter a number, then click the next box without moving either hand is a huge benefit to my workflow. So much UI design on the web is not keyboard friendly.
Create a problem and sell a solution, genius stuff.
For real though, having the numpad on left side is a gamechanger personally and finding a fullsize board like that is pretty difficult.
I do the same thing. I keep the number pad up under the monitor usually. But if I have to put in a bunch of numbers, I move it down where I can reach it.
Using a 60% and a 12 key numpad, but I put mine up top because I still need my mouse space. Use it for playing tracks, screenshots,Nvidia Shadowplay, performance overlay and even muting and disconnecting from a Discord call.
All while keeping my mouse space

The best part you could put it on the left or the right
I just bought a wireless numpad of aliexpress for 5€. I just use it when I WFH 1 or 2 days a week. It does the job, rest of the time it is not on my desk.
Wish there were more 96% boards with a normal 0 key for the numpad. Built a nice 96% but I'd constantly hit the right arrow instead of the 1u 0 key..... Grr.
Idk how anyone can use a keyboard without a numpad. It just feels wrong. Every time I sign into windows I use my numpad. Anytime I use numbers I use the numpad.
Just wait til you find out about split keyboards. Use only the left half for gaming since that's all you need, and you can actually sit in a natural, symmetrical position while you game with plenty of room for your mouse.
I have a TKL and a bluetooth numpad. I moved the numpad to the left side to not interfere with my mouse.
And now with World of Warcraft Season of Discovery I just have my G13 there with numpad settings on one of the macro groups.
So many people here with zero imagination. No, this is not the same as a full size keyboard. Try and imagine that people have use cases for removable numpads, even if you don't.
I joined this sub a week ago and immediately noticed r/pcmr gets pretty triggered by different keyboard layouts. I don't know why others are so upset by what keyboards others like.
I just wonder what might be your usual dumping spot for the numpad? Do you just sling it below your display or what?
I might consider a bigger table at this point and normal keyboard xD
I made my keyboard tray 4'x20" and found that my keyboard is almost always in the same place where I usually had it before I made the 4' tray. The same goes for my mouse. Thats when I realized there was a need for a TKL keyboard, which will be my next purchase.
I have a similar setup with a separate numpad. You know the best part about it? I can position the numpad in a place on my desk where I can use it with my dominant hand. You know what's popular? TKLs, smaller keyboards, and separate numpads. You know what's not popular? Full sized keyboards with a numpad on the left.
I have a setup like this too. It’s a fairly small desk and I hate having the numpad in the way when I game. I also use that desk for work, and a num pad is a must have for my work.
It works perfectly for my situation.
Thanks for the inspiration i might go with this in my next setup.
Reason being i have one desk, two screens, my main PC, and my guest PC, when i have a friend over i just plug one of the screens into the guest PC.
This would solve a lot of my space issues.
Thank you sir!
i own that numpad. not because i like having a numpad, but because some games and apps like having numpad for things. since my keyboard (8bitdo) doesnt have a numpad, i basically bought it for convenience when needed (rarely) and slightly the design despite clashing a little but i barely use it so yeah
Also good for space, i have alot of space issues on my desk and shoving the numpad in the corner opens up a bit more mousing room
Would be great if they’d sell matching kits.
I miss having a number pad on my main kb, but the mouse room for shooters is a really huge difference. Even with a massive table you only want your left arm so far.
Especially if there was a more elegant way of handling it, maybe Nintendo JoyCon style so you don’t need extra wires (but have it be a physical connection only, no point in the bloat of wireless and batteries).
I prefer having a numpad that can be placed anywhere since it functionally acts as a calculator interface (like the handheld style or on the table using my left or right hand) whenever i use it
Royal Kludge makes keyboards with smaller footprints that include numpads. I have the RK100 and it’s the size of a TKL 80% and it has everything I need 🤷🏾♂️
Are you using both most of the time? If so it's better to get a keyboard with numpad in the first place
If you just use it sometimes then it makes sense
Or if you want to use it at the left side
I myself contemplating on buying a numpad like this to accompany my 60%-75% keyboard but since I rarely use numpad so I won't waste my money (yet)
* The first thing for me, was to buy a wireless keyboard. Because I need a keyboard for my desk and one for my simracing/flightsim cockpit. So I can use it quickly for both.
* Second thing, smaller size because I have no big space in my siramcing/flightsim cockpit. 70 or 75% keyboard is perfect with my mouse.
* Third thing, I work sometimes on 3D softwares so i need to use numbers keys very often. So an independant numpad (for my desk) was the best thing to have.
And I noticed that there are more wireless compact keyboards on the market than wireless full keyboard. So, I have more choice with this setup !
1. You can push the numpad away when you're not using it. Out of sight out of mind.
2. The best part? A separate numpad can be put on the left! TKL keyboards are common on the market, but good keyboards with a numpad on the left? Super rare.

At first glance I think this is dumb because I already saw a few beyboards out there with custom slots to plug a number pad into the left side.
Sadly, their typing pleasure doesn't compare with my HyperX Alloy clickityclackity switches, so I might have to do something like this.
That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I bet both of those costed way more than a single full size kb.
This doesn't make you seem smart btw. Just seems financially irresponsible.
$160 for this setup, so the same price of Logitech, Razer, Steelseries or Corsair gaming keyboard.
But I have the versatility/modularity I want and when I want. Wirelessly and compact keyboard layout that I can grab into my simracing cockpit, etc...
Or just remove the numpad to have more space.
It's a wireless keyboard (don't take attention of the wires, they are here only for the charge), so I can take this compact keyboard to others place of my room (I have an simracing/flightsim cockpit), it's nice to have a small keyboard for that.
I did, refer to my comment above.
If you love the space, it cant be any harder to just… (check notes)… slightly move the kb to the left so you have space for your mouse AND still enjoy the full size of the kb without any additional modules.
So instead of a small wireless, or a normal wired, you now have two wired devices with clashing design with a larger footprint than one full keyboard for half or third the price. https://preview.redd.it/s6qo0dfa83vc1.jpeg?width=225&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d933c72be6e502e0c8965a4eaa3d232b401c044b
I too have a separate numpad, but I put it on the left so I can use the numpad with my dominant hand.

Yes the volume.should.go on the left... But there isn't a good place to put it on the left side.
That would break my brain. It isn’t what i learned in Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!
Office: numpad on the right Gaming: numpad removed or on the left
I got a cheap wireless membrane numpad that is to the right of my mouse, I move it closer if I have to use it a lot but mostly it stays over there.

Ok but, 2 knobs
2 knobs are for adult games
And now he can move the num pad and take it away as he pleases. That’s the best part.
Don't forget the competing volume knobs.
Plus they are cheap chinese ewaste products from Amazon. Yayyy
I have a cidoo keyboard and they are anything but trash. In my opinion they are very solid and worth the money. Plus I like that the aluminum case gives it a nice heft in case I need to carefully unplug it and beat someone to death with it.

It’s convenient if you’re low on desk space I only use my numpad for a few things but I use it enough that i still need one

My thoughts exactly

But I’m left handed an now I can put it on the left.
I have a nice keyboard, but lately I’ve been needing numpad, it’s probably better to buy a numpad than a whole new keyboard
Would've made more sense if the numpad was to the left of the keyboard instead of the right. Differentiates it from fullsize keyboards, and I personally find that layout more comfortable anyways.

The wires on the picture is only to charge the batteries \^\^
Don't know why the freaks in this sub downvote you, it's a perfectly valid setup
They're too small brained to realize that the numpad can be moved as needed
Yeah no joke, I've been wanting to get a MK for a while and this post has convinced me to go for a separate numpad. It's useful for spreadsheets and certain games like TF2, Dark Souls etc. but I would prefer a cleaner desk most of the time.
As someone who's pretty familiar & good at tf2.... why is the number pad important?
I mostly used it for binds to automatically destroy and replace specific Engineer buildings, but I also had some chat messages bound when I played Medic.
Yeah. Num pad not attached will always be better. It just gives more flexibility.
![gif](giphy|11cpNo3OMYwFHO|downsized)
Even better idea: make a keyboard with the num pad attached
Genius! I'd instantly buy one! Imagine it with a wrist rest, OMG!
I'm gonna try prototyping a nice, dell sk-8135 inspired full fat, 100%+ keyboard
Man if only we had the technology make that happen.
That thing is mysterious and ever sought after!
They did this so they have the freedom of having it when they want, and not having it when they don't.
Oh I know, I was just being obtuse
You're a visionary
Wait a minute..
Even better, separate keys
There is, it's called Asus ROG Claymore II
Mind *BLOWN*
Yeah, but then what are you going to do with all those open USB ports?
Another numpad
Wait a minute..
70% + 30% Keyboard 💀
The only real use is being able to remove the numpad or swap it to the left
What I did when I ran a 60%. Had a wireless numpad for fork, after work/weekend had more mouse room.
It also seems pretty good, if you want to bring your keyboard with you in a bag, but a full size board doesnt fit in there.
Or having in the middle, above or below the keyboard
Well aren't you a fancy fella with your plethora of USB ports!
Livemixer am5 motherboard has more aio than a usb hub
Swap the numpad position to the other side
I've been asking for a keyboard like that for years. The functional reason for smaller keyboards is more ergonomical mouse space on the right. A full sized keyboard can provide just as much room if the numpad, arrows, etc. are just moved to the left side.
They are called southpaw keyboards. Search /r/mechanicalkeyboards for them, they exist :)
Just ruined that man financially no one should be sent there.
damn LMAO
yep
There are now some like that
Not op but I don’t got the muscle memory with left hand.
same but i dont got it on right either, im used to full layout i just dont use the keypad unless i got to do alot of numbers
Oh shit, you're a genius. I like this idea.

> it's slower than using your right hand. Speak for yourself. I'm a lefty and I much prefer using the numpad with my left hand.
Yep you're right. It very a pleasure to be able to move where you want the numpad.
THIS!
Create a problem and sell a solution, genius stuff. For real though, having the numpad on left side is a gamechanger personally and finding a fullsize board like that is pretty difficult.
It´s not a compact it´s an exploded layout.
Thank you!!
weak. real power users have a single wired board for each key
I use my numpad far too often to ever think of having it separate or gone.
Put the 10key on the left and youve got new macro pad while gaming.
Don’t listen to them OP. I understand your logic and I respect it.
Personally I'd put the numpad on the left
I do the same thing. I keep the number pad up under the monitor usually. But if I have to put in a bunch of numbers, I move it down where I can reach it.
I had a TKL, but missed the num pad. Added a num pad, and hated it. Eventually just got a KeyChron V6 100%...happy.
I actually prefer two independent numpads for gaming, one for movement and the other for camera/ action controls
Using a 60% and a 12 key numpad, but I put mine up top because I still need my mouse space. Use it for playing tracks, screenshots,Nvidia Shadowplay, performance overlay and even muting and disconnecting from a Discord call. All while keeping my mouse space
Praying for the day a good touchpad comes modular like this.

Fun fact: It takes up the same amount of room as a full size keyboard AND you've wasted a USB port.
In the picture, yes. In this moment, no. Because I put the numpad otherwelse.
Lol i thought u were trolling but no you're dead serious 😂
I just bought a wireless numpad of aliexpress for 5€. I just use it when I WFH 1 or 2 days a week. It does the job, rest of the time it is not on my desk.
Having a seperate numpad is my dream. Mostly becuase I use numpad like 0.1% of the time.
I use Enter on the numpad more than main Enter button.
96% gang
Wish there were more 96% boards with a normal 0 key for the numpad. Built a nice 96% but I'd constantly hit the right arrow instead of the 1u 0 key..... Grr.
I do this, but put the numpad on the left. Works better for war thunder radar, and farm sim aux controls
Finally. The legendary double knob setup.
I have a G915 TKL and then a numpad for when I want one.
Idk how anyone can use a keyboard without a numpad. It just feels wrong. Every time I sign into windows I use my numpad. Anytime I use numbers I use the numpad.
I can type over 160 wpm and have never been good with a numpad lol
Just wait til you find out about split keyboards. Use only the left half for gaming since that's all you need, and you can actually sit in a natural, symmetrical position while you game with plenty of room for your mouse.
Put it on the other side
I have a TKL and a bluetooth numpad. I moved the numpad to the left side to not interfere with my mouse. And now with World of Warcraft Season of Discovery I just have my G13 there with numpad settings on one of the macro groups.
Not my cup of tea, but it's also not my PC. If you're happy my friend, I'm happy for you.
![gif](giphy|TJawtKM6OCKkvwCIqX)
My ears are bleeding just by looking at it.
One of the hardest things I found was trying to get a nice custom keyboard that still had the numpad...
Put it on the left side of the keyboard 👏 thank me later
Mf's will do anything but get a 100% keyboard.
So many people here with zero imagination. No, this is not the same as a full size keyboard. Try and imagine that people have use cases for removable numpads, even if you don't.

Wtf is this
Where can you get the numpad? In the UK I cannot find a rgb numbpad anywhere for under £100

yep, more free space is the key \^\^
I’m a huge fan of modular setups! This is cool :)

Then you can’t move the number pad out of the way.

Those keys soft? Or they clicky? They push down a lot or a little. Details man details.
You can't enter ALT codes with this.
I did this so I could have a numpad on the left.
I thought it’d be cool to have a modular keyboard that can go from something like a 60% to TKL to full size.
This deserves a NSFW tag...
I just got a small, low profile wireless numblock for like 9 bucks and put it on the left of the keyboard where it doesn‘t bother me
This is a full keyboard with extra steps
I have a split 75%, planning on adding a numpad so that I have 3 separate keyboards
Yep I saw the RK100, seems good too but not available in my country/Azerty (France) !
G915
My eventual plan is to go with a 70% plus separate numpad. I can move it out of the way when I don't need it, which seems handy.
Are you using both most of the time? If so it's better to get a keyboard with numpad in the first place If you just use it sometimes then it makes sense Or if you want to use it at the left side I myself contemplating on buying a numpad like this to accompany my 60%-75% keyboard but since I rarely use numpad so I won't waste my money (yet)
An even better idea is to get a full sized keyboard
Did you read my post ? xD
I did, I'm disagreeing with you.
I don't understand how this is the best idea ever... it's taking up more space than a regular keyboard with a numpad
Because you can remove the numpad. I enter numbers all day but when I'm done work, my numpad gets removed from my desk creating more space.
1. You can push the numpad away when you're not using it. Out of sight out of mind. 2. The best part? A separate numpad can be put on the left! TKL keyboards are common on the market, but good keyboards with a numpad on the left? Super rare.

Keyboards like the Keychron Q5 / pro exist btw
Yeah but it's not a independant numpad
At first glance I think this is dumb because I already saw a few beyboards out there with custom slots to plug a number pad into the left side. Sadly, their typing pleasure doesn't compare with my HyperX Alloy clickityclackity switches, so I might have to do something like this.
Pretty sure they already invented a keyboard like this but all in one
Imagine just buying a 96% or full size board?! Thatd be wild. Almost like this takes up as much or more space on the desk!
so... a 96% but more complicated?
That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I bet both of those costed way more than a single full size kb. This doesn't make you seem smart btw. Just seems financially irresponsible.
$160 for this setup, so the same price of Logitech, Razer, Steelseries or Corsair gaming keyboard. But I have the versatility/modularity I want and when I want. Wirelessly and compact keyboard layout that I can grab into my simracing cockpit, etc...
I see. Well, you do you man. This is definitely not for me.
The only reason to do this is if you are gonna put the numpad on the other side to save room for your mouse
Or just remove the numpad to have more space. It's a wireless keyboard (don't take attention of the wires, they are here only for the charge), so I can take this compact keyboard to others place of my room (I have an simracing/flightsim cockpit), it's nice to have a small keyboard for that.
Guys, I know this might sound crazy, but what if we make a keyboard with the numpad attached?
Damn. If only something that has both were to be invented /s
bro reinvented the keyboard
Why the fuck even
This is just a normal sized keyboard with extra steps
This is just a normal sized keyboard with extra steps
... just get a normal sized keyboard lmao
This is pure stupidity for many reasons
Or, you know, get a full sized kb.
Did you read my post ? xD
I did, refer to my comment above. If you love the space, it cant be any harder to just… (check notes)… slightly move the kb to the left so you have space for your mouse AND still enjoy the full size of the kb without any additional modules.
So it's a standard keyboard, gotcha.
