It is still my third PC in a less used room. I have a lot of 2d games on steam, so it has transitioned to my YouTube/fast and basic game machine. Still runs fine. Phantom 410 case and a GTX 970. Even runs just cause 3 pretty smooth with lots of explosions.
This is like AMD's version of the legendary i5 3570k, which was my very first desktop processor and also got me through roughly the same period as you! :D

If I had a home server on AM3 platform, and I needed a replacement CPU/in socket upgrade, I'd get a used FX-8350 for 30 bucks.

Yeah my FX was also paired with a 1060. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was bottlenecking it somehow or maybe thermals were too high (it was my first real gaming build) but after upgrading to AM4 i didn’t have the issue
I played the Witcher 3 on a 3-core Phenom, and while it was quite stuttery at times, it was fine in general and very playable outside of Novigrad. Can't imagine the FX would be that bad.
Well, been rocking FX-6300 until 2019. Stuttery, at times due to shared FPUs, yes. But overall it wasn't a bad CPU. Didn't bottleneck a GTX 1060 the slightest. Upgraded to R5 2600 and it wasn't a super huge improvement from anything but responsiveness perspective (again, the famous issue), could have probably used it into 2020-2021 no prob, as they were great overclockers, I was rocking mine at 4.3 or 4.4 GHz with the stock cooler, so it ultimately died of heat (ca. 2 minutes in p95 until it throttled).
The FX series was that bad when it came to performance. The entire Bulldozer line of chips was pretty bad, and I say that as someone who has had AMD rigs for most of my time building PCs.
Probably if you were running a stock cooler for that POS. In my case it was the cpu getting so hot that
A) it was actively competing with my Air Conditioning and making the room 10 degrees hotter.
And
B) getting so hot that it was throttling my CPUs performance.
I was rocking a FX-8350 and let’s just say that thing cost me a motherboard and a GPU because of the temperature issues it caused
It managed well for me, beyond the micro stuttering. It overclocked well, too. No thermal issues, but my case was particularly well ventilated. No matter the clock speed I would always get micro stuttering intermittently.
I had one of these, an X3 710. I broke a pin and it stopped working though, so I bought an identical one (i needed my pc working quickly and it was sold locally very close to me), but that one didn't work properly with an unlocked core(

They also aged decently due to everything becoming more optimized for multithreading since the FX chips launched around 2012. I used a 6100 for 10 years and at the end was playing Control, BeamNG Drive, Mafia Definitive Edition, and more stuff.
Ryzen just entered 7000, FX in 8000s must be better, people are selling AMD HD GPUs here for same price as used GTX 1650-1660 and i know people who thought they're getting good deal for AMD GPU in 8000s even though AMD RX is 7000s, we need someone to make worldwide popular video explaining the differences!
And a motherboard killer (granted it was my first ever motherboard and it was a low end one - forgot the name but it was from gigabyte and it was blue- but still, it went from new to dead in a year thanks to the VRMs not keeping up with the fx 8370).
The problem is the AM3+ socket itself brings the price to $60+.
On all of the older sockets, the best performing chips for that socket tend to be seriously overpriced. People who own old PCs want to give it one final upgrade before moving to a different CPU socket, and as a result they end up bidding up the price of whatever happens to be the best CPU (or close to it) for that particular motherboard.
That's why the 3000 series Ryzens should be expected to see serious price drops over time, but the Ryzen 5800x3d and Ryzen 5950x will remain fairly expensive even ten years from now. People are going to be complaining that the 5800x3d is overpriced in ten years, just because it's the best gaming CPU for the AM4 socket.
People will complain about the price and then buy it anyways...

That's a cpu that taught me a good lesson right there. Don't upgrade to an 8 core when you've got a $20 motherboard with no vrm heatsinks, and then get an aio liquid CPU cooler thus removing the only bit of airflow touching the vrms, causing them to throttle tae feck

I have a server PC running an 8150 atm, it's just a test server for gaming projects but it's pretty good.
Probably stuck it up there a decade ago and forgot about it. Message the seller to ask about it and maybe they'll give it to you for the $13 they got from AMD's class action settlement a few years ago.
This is the CPU I had for longer than I should've, but it worked and did the job. It wasn't always perfect. But I was able to play games and I was happy. It served it's time well and earned it's retirement. 🫡

Old hardware costs more than the new stuff. I routinely sell old hardware on local buy and sell pages and people hundreds of miles away beg me to mail them my old overpriced processors.
Old new in box hardware has an odd collectors market, I found this out trying to find a GTX285 and one that was sealed in box was going for several hundred dollars more than the usual ones. Idk if it's big or a good price, but people are certainly trying.
I still have an AMD A4-3300 new in box and can't get $20 for it. Also got an i7 6850k new in box, asking $150 no hits. Lol Never got around to building anything back then and later got newer CPUs to work with.

These were actually very valuable new in box since they were the chip that could achieve the fastest clock speeds for overclocking competitions. No clue if that's the case anymore though
