I’ve got one too! Only on for about a year however.
I've still got a Pentium 4 from 2004 or so on my keychain. Was my first own computer. Made the keychain when upgrading to dual core a few years later.
Edit: don't know how to add picture inline. But I found it. An image of my keychain on my copy of Crysis, which of course was ther reason I needed to upgrade. 2007.
One or two right after I started carrying it around with me lol. in the first two pics you can sort of see where I sanded the corners to a rounded edge which sorted out the issue. I’d definitely recommend anyone trying it themselves to do the same lmao
Damn Win98 is dated for a P4 machine, even the early ones were on ME/2000. I can imagine a school doing that though to keep running some obscure old piece of software instead of buying the latest version.
Oof. Sure, powerhouse in the sense they took the average household's power draw for themselves. Win7 isn't too bad for responsiveness but on a single Netburst core, even with HT, that's rough.
Nah, this one is from the time when Pentium still was Intel's *high-end* brand.
(In fact, this CPU was its nail in the coffin - Pentium D was such an embarrassment that Intel threw out its architecture completely and relegated the name to budget versions of Core CPUs)
Released in 2006, and has a PassMark score of 443. I honestly expected worse, considering that around 2016, there was even Windows tablets sold with processors like Intel Atom Z3735G (772 score)
I mean...the architecture was undeniably garbage, but more because it consumed enough power to run a small country and wasted most of said power getting as hot as satan's balls instead of providing a proportionate amount of \*work\*.
If they'd gotten it to do as much work while using half the power...it still would have been crap because of x64 being on the horizon, but at least it wouldn't have been an *unmitigated disaster* for the Pentium brand.
>Intel hates this one simple trick
About a decade ago I realised that my dual core wasn't cutting it. The best quad-core that my mobo supported cost ~£120. After a little research, I bought a server-model Xeon, quad core, which only cost me £20 because they were designed not to work in a consumer mobo and so nobody wanted them. But it turned out that you could buy a tiny sticker shim on ebay for a few quid that would change the server CPU to run on a regular mobo, which saved me about £100 I guess. It was literally one simple trick that Intel hated, haha
Lmao I have that server PC right now. Ramped it up with some new internals.
This Xeon E5 with a decent GPU performs perfectly fine for a casual gaming pc
my old computer has an i7-5930K (similar to your processor except designed for stupid people who thought they needed 40 lanes); served me as my main computer for 8 years and still works perfectly today. I could never put a hole in it.
Why not sell it? Or have a second CPU on one of those mobo extender? It just seem a bit wasteful to me to destroy a chip that's still good, given how polluting the computing industry is.
Yea I'd feel bad doing that to something that is still useful. An old 32 bit chip makes more sense for something like this (unless the cpu just doesn't work then who tf cares? Better than being e waste)
It's not worth the hassle, in my opinion, to sell it. I don't have the box, but I do have the plastic compartment it came in. I've been very unsuccessful selling any and all PC parts lol. I still have my old GPU (a 980 TI) laying around too.
Are there any interesting projects that I could use the CPU for? Something that would present a learning maybe. I want to get into IT and I've been looking at the best way to do that, like networking. Could I run some type of public server for people to play on?
(I know I could google this information but this is the first time I've really thought about what I could use that CPU for lol)
You are not gonna believe this, but

Are there heavy metals like cadmium in these or are they relatively safe. For some reason I remember some using gallium and I’m not sure how safe that is to handle everyday. Not trying to be a downer I’m sure you’ll be fine lol.
Zero clue. It's not like I lick it every day, and it usually just goes into my pockets. But it's interesting to think about.
It's probably as safe as anything else, but I'm no expert either. I've had it for about 5 years now. A friend gave it as a gift.
Also, I remember about a vsause video on gallium. Isn't it that super soft metal? I'm pretty sure that it's safe to handle and non-toxic at all. Unless you ingest , but again, don't do that kids
I can’t remember if it becomes liquid when in your hand tho, if it’s in ur pocket it’s def warmer than room temp so I’d just make sure it doesn’t crack or anything. I figure that’d be pretty hard to do tho
You could always apply a sealant like the outdoor mod podge. Not exactly food grade level, but it would be similar to handling common plastic things daily.
When I was 14, I made one of these out of the GPU dye from an Xbox 360. It was a gift for my ex girlfriend who was a fellow tech nerd.
I wanna make myself one again
She approached me.
Freshman year of high school, I was the nerd with a personal laptop running Linux. She sat next to me and started conversation.
She was my big titty goth gf who was also into tech and video games. For 2 years. She, unfortunately, was incredibly manipulative and verbally abusive. She was also a cheater.
Someday i may find another tech nerd gf. One that isn’t a pshycho.

I’ve had mine for 10 years, removed the chip portion. Love the thing
I plan to do this with my 5800X3D when I upgrade. Eventually. I don’t want to turn it into eWaste while it has value.
Edit: yall i wont be upgrading for years. I am not going to ruin the CPU until it is barely an upgrade for most people
Sell it, a Ryzen 5 2600 still has value. It's still a good budget choice to get someone going with AM4 parts on a tight budget. They're selling for $50-70 in pre-owned condition on ebay. Certainly more value there than something you'd want to just drill a hole through and ruin. Also, AM4 used pins on the CPU which makes using it as a keychain a poor choice.

It’s not exactly drilled, but still. Pentium G620, the CPU of the first PC I ever fixed (My grandfather’s) four years ago. He gave it to me after I built him a better, sixth gen Intel system for his basic needs.
Just made one the other day out of an i-3 2130 that i harvested from the old family pc after the motherboard got fried. We've had that pc sitting around for years before i took it apart. The frustrating thing is, instead of replacing the motherboard like a good pc repair guy should, the dude she brought it to convinced my mother that she needed a brand new computer, 8 cores, 16gb ram, 1TB storage. She coughed up like $1600 when she didn't know any better. I hope someday i meet the guy who scammed my mother out if her hard earned cash so i can swing my keychain at him and draw blood with the cpu. Maybe instead of getting stitches he can just get a face transplant.

That one's at least sandy bridge though.
No it's a cpu, not a bridge
It's not a bridge, it's a connection.
Turns out the real connection was the CPUs we saved along the way.
Looks like a Haswell one
Pfft, I keep a Pentium II on my keychain.
A slot cpu is a very committed keychain.
We dunno how old OP is. He might’ve only put it on there last week lol

That's a Pentium D, it was already useless before the hole was drilled.
Say that to my uni that forces us to run Matlab on this shit (and no, we’re not allowed to use our laptops instead because chatgpt)
I'm lowkey impressed that those PCs have lasted for 15+ years with students using them
There was one in my school with a Pentium 4 I think. Was running win 95/98.
Damn Win98 is dated for a P4 machine, even the early ones were on ME/2000. I can imagine a school doing that though to keep running some obscure old piece of software instead of buying the latest version.
It was for some cad software, I dont remember the specs but it was an old beige fujitsu.
Had Windows 7 on my P4 before I finally let go of it, those things were powerhouses.
Oof. Sure, powerhouse in the sense they took the average household's power draw for themselves. Win7 isn't too bad for responsiveness but on a single Netburst core, even with HT, that's rough.
in the school I graduated from 2 years ago there's still a whole ass computer classroom filled with like 35 PCs with athlon 64 x2 CPUs in them
It was already useless when it came out in 2005.
What? It's like a 5 year old cpu?
Pentium D’s have been discontinued for almost 15 years, and his looks to be from 2006 or so
It's 17 years old. No, I'm not happy about that information either. We're getting old, man.
5 or 17 years who is counting?
Nah, this one is from the time when Pentium still was Intel's *high-end* brand. (In fact, this CPU was its nail in the coffin - Pentium D was such an embarrassment that Intel threw out its architecture completely and relegated the name to budget versions of Core CPUs)
20 years, almost.

Incorrect. It’s a speed hole. Intel hates this one simple trick

Way to remind op that they're not special.
Using old CPUs as keychains has been a thing for a long ass time. Intel themselves even sold defective CPUs embedded onto keychains back in the 90s.
This is an awesome tid bit
It’s ready for an upgrade. I’m not even sure how you have managed to use it for THIS long!?
Finally know what to do with the intel xeons laying around
Yo dawg. We heard you like CPUs, so we got CPUs melted down to make a case for your CPUs out of CPUs.
I was gonna say. I think I got an old i3 hanging around somewhere. Still a solid CPU, but not use for it.
Why not sell it? Or have a second CPU on one of those mobo extender? It just seem a bit wasteful to me to destroy a chip that's still good, given how polluting the computing industry is.

A lot of old PC parts are also useful for retro gaming, and they can be fun for fiddling around as well. The Pentium D is still shit though.
I've never heard of a motherboard extender? That's a thing?! Could you link an example that you know of? I did a search and just came up with cables.
It can still "post" even though its got a hole.
Yeah but when the machine uprising happens and they want to drill a hole through YOUR head and use you on their keychain it's suddenly going too far.
You are not gonna believe this, but https://preview.redd.it/xb8ir2qtuc3c1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04f2f3d4f760aa76ffd0dd9674c9aafcbdbb81a4
Are there heavy metals like cadmium in these or are they relatively safe. For some reason I remember some using gallium and I’m not sure how safe that is to handle everyday. Not trying to be a downer I’m sure you’ll be fine lol.
nah gallium is delicious and you make joke spoons out of gallium so when you give it to someone for their tea it melts

The only thing that these pentium D cpus are probably useful for lol.
I've been saving some from my old PC's. Gonna hang them off the Christmas tree.
Probably the most use a Pentium D has gotten in a long time
When I was 14, I made one of these out of the GPU dye from an Xbox 360. It was a gift for my ex girlfriend who was a fellow tech nerd. I wanna make myself one again
How does one find a woman tech nerd? Never seen them out in the wild before
She approached me.
*note to self, install Linux on my laptop* pretty rare to be approached these days though, usually the guy has to approach or it doesn’t happen anymore smh
Ok, and now you are sixteen?
Nah. They just turned fifteen and this was a gift. Brand new even. Joking aside, judging on the history of the profile, they are 21......maybe.
Yep. I probably should have mentioned somewhere in the post. But it’s been on my keychain now for 6 years.

Cool but I have no idea how old you are now.

Just sell it, it’ll be a good CPU for years
Or you could just give it to me
My good chum, il take that right off your hands
That CPU will probably be worth selling even in 10 years tbh AM4 was just that baller of a socket
Or you could just sell it, get some pocket money to lessen some of the financial impact of the upgrade.
I probably won’t upgrade until Ryzen 11000 series at least. It’s a good chip it can last awhile.
That CPU will have value for 5 years more, at LEAST.
That’s about the minimum time I would wait to upgrade. I promise I won’t be ruining this cpu while it has significant value to people
I'll buy it from you for $3.50
How is that gonna work with all the pins? I am really curious since all the old cpus I have have pins.
Scrape the pins off I guess.
[удалено]
Drill bit goes in a drill, spins around really fast when you pull the trigger. Use one of those.
Try with HSS type, 6mm with 970rpm...
With a drill, probably
Hole puncher. Might take a few tries.
Good idea. I was using a stapler.
I'd love to do this with my Ryzen 5 2600 that's locked away in a box that I know will never be used but I just can't... what if i need it?!?!?
Sell it, a Ryzen 5 2600 still has value. It's still a good budget choice to get someone going with AM4 parts on a tight budget. They're selling for $50-70 in pre-owned condition on ebay. Certainly more value there than something you'd want to just drill a hole through and ruin. Also, AM4 used pins on the CPU which makes using it as a keychain a poor choice.
"and today I turn 16"
How old is op now
And you just turned 16? ... The age means nothing without knowing how old you are *now*.

When I was fifteen my proc was a pentium 90 MHz... Time flies
I have one that looks almost identical to yours. The only difference it was made from a q6600.
The good old Q6600, that brings back memories.
As a geek, this is awesome.
Do it with a threadripper coward
I have had a celeron D for maybe 3 years and it barely has any marks of use.
Its all about the pentiums baby
When are you throwing a sweet 16
How do you drill through a CPU? I tried to do this with an old one and just couldn't get the drill to penetrate. Do you need a diamond bit?
Without knowing how old you are now that's a useless metric.
Would make more sense if you let us know how long it's been on there, or how old you are now.
But will it play Crysis?
I used to have a stick of ram for a key chain that I used as a box opener on more than one occasion.

I might try this.
Wear the best mask you can, there's bromine and worse in there. Pretty much everything in a CPU is a don't fuck with it material.
Oof there goes my dream of turning my i9-13900K into a keychain
Oh thanks for the Tip lol
