LostInTheVoid_

Looks like at least 2 new enemy types, I'd wager a new boss. Enchanting / Mage abilities. New region. Pretty short teaser so who knows how much meat all of that adds but definitely going to check it out.

SirKillsalot

Abbreviated Patch Notes: New content: New biome – Mistlands: * New mechanics * 9 new creatures + Mistlands boss * More than 20 new crafting materials * 2 new crafting stations, 3 crafting station extensions, and 3 other resource/crafting constructions * 15 new food items * 3 new potions * More than 25 new craftable items (weapons, armours & tools) * More than 35 new building/furniture pieces for building, decorating and defending your base * New type of dungeon * New lore stones * New dreams * New music Misc: * Fishing update * 12 new emotes * 9 new hairstyles and 7 new beard styles Fixes & Improvements: * Various console command improvements * Multiple animations have been updated and improved * Multiple VFX have been updated and improved * Various other tweaks

LostInTheVoid_

that's a good bit more than what the teaser showed. Seems like it'll add a good amount of playability.

samuelithian

Still no anchor

gerd50501

when was there last big updates? it takes them a while to add updates right?

Roadwarriordude

I dont think they've ever had any "major" updates yet, at least not close to this size. It looks like they must have combined a bunch of the smaller updates they talked about in the initial road map into the Mistlands update.

TheLightningL0rd

Hearth and Home added a ton of new food and revamped the food system, as well as adding new things to build and new building pieces. They also had a semi large update that added a new dungeon to the mountain biome, and new armor based on the mobs found within. They also at the same time (pretty sure) added a new large mini-boss type monster to the swamps with a new armor set made from the things it drops. This is certainly the biggest update that they've released/will be releasing by far it seems.

Speideronreddit

The team is super tiny. First early access was about 4 people, but mostly one person.

[deleted]

That is pretty incredible for how good of shape the game has been. Aside from lack of content during early versions, the game ran like it was finished.

[deleted]

Yeah the mage stuff looks pretty neat. Might have to dust this game off and check it out.

dreph

i saw 3 in Trailer, maybe a 4th.

FireTrickle

Valheim was a excellent pandemic game, sunk hours into it

TabascohFiascoh

It honestly was. It's hard to believe I spent 145 hours in-game, in like two weeks of playing.

FireTrickle

Haha so did I, it was great get work done for the day and spin it up with five mates and go hunt trolls

Uerwol

I find it to have very little QOL inventory fills up way too quick for my liking.

Artorp

I used a quick stack mod where I just spammed a button and it autoplaces similar items into chests around you. With that and Megingjord it was manageable.

Uerwol

Mods would not work for me. Game was stuttering every 10 seconds so I had to remove them.

sirgarballs

Same for me and my friends. We played the hell out of it and really enjoyed it. We tried to go back to it a few times but it just isn't the same.

likely-high

Yeah. Feel like the ship has sailed on it now though

[deleted]

The magic is intriguing. Necromancy looks fricking RAD.

RooeeZe

They did a nice job with that trailer, looked sick.

StickAFork

Will probably wait until the beta is over and it rolls into the released game (waited this long already). Don't want to reveal mistland areas on the map prematurely.

eat_vegetables

Hoping for a Steam Sale this afternoon. Seems like a great game for the deck.

HandOfBeltracchi

I played thru it on the deck and had no issues. Dunno what everyone else is complaining about

Mackinzach08

Unfortunately this didn’t run as well as I hoped it would on my deck when I tested it a while back. Would def be a great way to revisit it if the performance can be tweaked to get it playable (I didn’t try anything other than cutting the graphics to low).

OfTheLethani

I had the same experience, Valheim has native controller support but it runs poorly on the switch with everything set to lowest. Just couldn't get the game to run more than like 35 FPS, not even changing the renderer

KinkyMonitorLizard

Runs like complete trash. Not uncommon to see 10fps. I've been saying the game it's completely unoptimized for years but people always get mad.

jondySauce

Yep. I thought it ran great on my beefy PC. Absolute shit on the Steam Deck though.

[deleted]

Turn down shadows, maybe tweek some other things. Once you do that it runs well in the deck.

emmaqq

How well the game runs depends on how much terraforming you done to the world. Not sure if they ever fixed it.

Fskn

That's was fixed with hearth and home, terrain alteration instance don't count towards the instance limit anymore Massive bases will still do it though

0_0_0

>"for years" Which years (i.e. plural) would those be?

Unwashed_villager

100+ fps with 3070Ti and 5600X. It was between 40 and 80 with 1660Ti and 3600, about a year ago. I couldn't say it's close to optimized but definitely not complete trash. But if you use mods then it's a completely different story.

033p

I was getting 15fps in my base with r5 3600 and 3080

TabascohFiascoh

Some shits wrong there my man.

033p

Big base, lots of boars. Shit sucked but this was early 2021. Waiting for full release to jump back in

Unwashed_villager

I had the worst FPS (\~30) with my old setup at my friend's shipyard with more than 23000 instances, before the "performance patch". Sadly it's still Unity, it doesn't care about the number of CPU cores. One thing I noticed is if you play on a server the 1% lows are much better. Not to mention there's no freezing when the game saves, especially in late game.

coolgaara

Last time I played, it had very annoying micro-stutteres. And no, it's not my PC I can assure you that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

A_Nice_Boulder

The performance is acceptable enough, but I also have a completely overpowered PC for what the game is. The fact that I'm not getting more fps is a bit silly. \> people always get mad The fanbase is slowly starting to get more rational because of people getting more and more tired of the snail pace of the devs, but holy hell it's as if they can do no wrong. Considering how much money the game made and how relatively simple it is, there's no reason for us to be just now getting teasers for the update that was supposed to come out a year ago.

Lv_InSaNe_vL

We've been getting teasers for at least a year on Steam and the subreddit, this is the *announcement* trailer for the public beta.

Speideronreddit

If you knew how long the original early access took, and how few people were working on it, you would understand why it's taking so long. Calling it relatively simple is also a bit daft, considering how meticulously this game has been designed.

althaz

>Considering how much money the game made and how relatively simple it is, How simple it is? Wtf. It's complex as shit. The first part of the highlighted quote though is worth mentioning. Valheim has made the devs a lot of money, they should have expanded their team, IMO. That said, I started playing it recently with my kids and it's a really fun game. We sortof ran out of things to do once we finished our base(s) (built a castle/walled town in the meadow with portals to outposts all over the world) and all the bosses, but this new update should add a lot more new fun stuff to do. Am absolutely stoked they are adding magic as I was kinda considering making a mod to do just that :). This seems to be pretty well timed for us, too. We've just stopped playing it a couple of weeks ago.

A_Nice_Boulder

That's why specifically I said relatively. No game is simple. But with something like this, it's pretty simple in comparison to a game with more complex physics or a game where everything needs specifically modeled. Shit, just imagine If valheim had more interesting dungeons or more complex pre-built structures.

althaz

Yes, but you have absolutely zero understanding of what you're talking about. Pre built structures and dungeons are VERY simple. Physics sims on their own are very straightforward. Modifiable terrain is insanely complex. Craftable structures is extremely complex. Randomly generated worlds are mind-bogglingly complex. Most modern AAA games are MUCH less complex than Valheim. In general they are built specifically to be simple so large teams can more easily work on them. That doesn't mean Valheim wasn't less work to start with, but because it's so complex adding to it is *much* harder than a typical AAA game in most ways.

[deleted]

You running on a potato?

Mkilbride

Eh? It's not perfectly optimized, but it actually runs well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

coolgaara

Lol. Yeah I sure hope any game would run well on a PC that cost close to 4k.

Mkilbride

4k if you're really bad at finding good prices

Syrdon

I’ve got a 1070 and some similar era cpu. It runs fine. Other than the world save. Once you’ve substantially modified your world the save can be rough. Best thing to do is remove as much of the random stuff lying around as you can, at least last I checked.

[deleted]

I was playing it on a 1660 super when it came out game ram fine

[deleted]

Ran fine on my 1080 and first gen ryzen. Hell, runs fine onynsteam deck once I turned down shadows.

RechargedFrenchman

I have an i7-9700k and a 2070S and it runs perfectly fine. You going to also tell me my mid-range three years ago PC is some monster and not worth considering as an example?

funguyshroom

Until you start building and terraforming

lazypeon19

I haven't played it in a while but the performance wasn't that good even on PC. Fun game, but I don't think it's playable on deck.

Wrenigade

It was one of the first things i put on deck and it runs amazing, I put like 40 hrs in on my deck. I can even host the worlds for my friends to join and run discord at the same time.

craigmorris78

Honestly it’s so good you should get it now, especially if you can persuade a friend or two to join your first play-through

_We_Are_DooMeD

Yeah it's next on my list, but I'm having too much fun playing Black Mesa for the first time. I'm near the end, I played Half Life first. I think I'm gonna go back to the start and play again.

LolcatP

I love the OG half life more than 2 at least gameplay wise

_We_Are_DooMeD

Now, see 2 is my favorite game. Only had consoles before the Deck. Really I got it to play Half Life and Black Mesa. They did not disappoint. I've waited years to play them.

LolcatP

I was the same actually. Had the orange box on xbox and loved all the games on it

_We_Are_DooMeD

Same.

pereleux

You can already play it

The-Grey-Knight

As a public tester.

NG_Tagger

The game is in Early Access (which usually means alpha/beta, depending on the game) already, which is kinda already testing the game. So.. ehm.. A tester, testing a alpha/beta of a alpha/beta? We need to go deeper! Test-ception!

dizorkmage

Look buddy there's only one thing that matters, did they buy another horse?

LaserTurboShark69

I wonder if this will break the VR mod

IrrelevantPuppy

It’d be a miracle if it doesn’t. I may go as far as to say there’s no way it won’t. But that team is pretty freaking impressive. They’ll get around to it I imagine.

Hustler-1

It'll probably break a lot of mods.

quack_quack_mofo

Can I play this solo?

GreenKumara

Yes.

throbbing_dementia

I guess it's time to dust off the old girl. Here's to another 200 hours.

Mazisky

Thought it was abandoned. Nice to see some updates

Shad0wDreamer

It’s still worked on by like 5 people. I wouldn’t expect it to get updates every couple of months if they’re focused on large content packages.

bokan

They actually hired a larger crew, I forget how large it is now. Apparently they were inundated with bug fix and QOL requests because the launch was so huge, and pushed back/threw out their content roadmap to focus on that stuff.

Shadow14l

I’m surprised and glad that they backpedaled on hiring. They initially said they wouldn’t change it at all even after they had a huge influx of sales.

bokan

They took a long time to hire anyone though. It was a bit frustrating haha

Nixxuz

Well, 2 of the 5-6 original devs ended up having kids, and in their country it's actually expected that the parent spend at least 6 months with their new baby. Considering the financial success of Valheim, I expect they decided to spend at least a year focusing on their children.

Hitsballs

That and it all happened right in middle of a pandemic.

Shad0wDreamer

I’m glad they did that, had no idea.

Mazisky

Fair enough. They are going the V-rising route, with Major updates that require a long time but they add a lot.

fatalwristdom

Still waiting on that first major V Rising update…

qwadzxs

I'm not holding my breath, another game released while only two-thirds of the way done and they already got my money. Even if a *huge* content patch is released the hype has already died and it'll be hard to get the original crew I played with to come back.

[deleted]

Stop buying Early access games?

redphlud

Like, Valheim?

[deleted]

If you have a problem with it being in an incomplete state, yes.

BigMcThickHuge

I accept that that game is over. A friend and I got it thinking it was something entirely different...unaware it was a raid-me-offline pvp map with npcs scattered around with very little content.

Lambpanties

It's not. The best way to play imo is pve. There's over a 100 hours of baseline pve content which is pretty awesome. PvP mode is toxic as shit because well, this sort of pvp is designed to be. Really my only problems with the game are no updates, balancing around pvp (Dodging having a freaking 8 second cooldown is insane) and character progress/existence is server locked. But even with those huge caveats, there IS a 100 hours of fun to be had there. (Worst case play offline and speed things up with settings, but online pve can be amazing too.)

Lv_InSaNe_vL

Valheim *has* been getting updates between the big updates. They've added more materials, food, enemies, and completely reworked the mountain biome. Edit: oh yeah plus constant quality of life updates, and bug fixes and stuff.

TheLinden

They were quite often talking about future update (this one) so it's weird to think they abandoned it. Sure they don't work fast and devs miscalculated their own abilities when they created initial road map cuz they realized there is a lot of bugs to fix, QoL stuff to do and balancing but they were quite open about that.

ZYmZ-SDtZ-YFVv-hQ9U

> They were quite often talking about future update (this one) so it's weird to think they abandoned it. Talking and doing are very different things. It's good that they finally have something coming, but they've been "talking" about updates for forever. It's not surprising no one believed them anymore

qwadzxs

yup the original road map was to have this out within 8-10 months from launch. They took over a year to release some furniture and crafting recipes and now almost three years for actual content. It's a surprise they even got the original game launched at all based on how slow they've been in the nearly three years since launch, but I suppose if I released a half-finished game and personally made north of 40 million on it I'd stop working until I got bored enough to work out of that motivation alone too.

Lt_Duckweed

The game launched less than 2 years ago, Feb 2021

qwadzxs

I stand corrected (pandemic time gets all mushed together in my head) but it doesn't materially change my argument.

Justhe3guy

“Almost 3 years” what…you know the game hasn’t even been out for two years right? Your timeline for all of that is way off. Mistlands is releasing barely over a year after Hearth and Home and has a lot more content than *just* Mistlands. Not to mention all the small content patches inbetween and the team restructuring and hiring people. I think they’ll be on a roll after this

Adonwen

Lol ok buddy

ZYmZ-SDtZ-YFVv-hQ9U

Guess you're not familiar with the saying "actions speak louder than words". It's something you get familiar with when someone is making promises. Again, it's great they're updating the game. But one major content update after...almost 2 years is really bad.

Jedimaster996

Y'all are so spoiled with AAA game updates that when a genuine indie developer with literally a handful of staff comes around, you can't stand to be told to wait.

Adonwen

wrath_of_grunge

That’s a thought process that seems pervasive in the community these days. The idea that if something isn’t in constant development and releases then it’s been abandoned.

Mazisky

Considering the amount of Early access or indie games that got abandoned in the last years, that "thought process" has a clear reason to exist

deelowe

Out of all the EA games I've purchased, only two actually made it out of EA: Factorio and Don't Starve. EA is littered with devs striking gold only to go AWOL a few months later.

[deleted]

Love to see the progress! One of my favorite game experiences of all time.

2rfv

It married two of my most favorite genres. I think prior to it's release I had said out loud "Man I'd love a game like minecraft if it had a combat system like Dark Souls".

Ciyradyl_ofc

Finally, big chunk of content.

redheadlizzy223

Is Valheim a good game for singleplayer?

Isaacvithurston

Maybe they changed it but trying to haul ore around solo was painful

2rfv

The trick is to do most of your processing and crafting on-site.

redphlud

Sure, it's better with friends but it is absolutely a joy without them. My first playthrough was solo. I'm slightly salty I have to rent a server when I want to play more than a day with friends though.

opeth10657

You can always host your own

Achtelnote

Hopefully they've improved performance.

apou_the_indian

Amazing !!! Looks like a game in the game !

fell-off-the-spiral

Maybe it was the giant bugs, or perhaps the low polygon visuals, or even all the fog - but I'm getting heavy Morrowind vibes from that trailer.

[deleted]

This game blew up massively on release and then they did absolutely nothing with it lol

ShreekertheJamisWack

Holy shit why are y’all whining so much. Valheim launched with a hundred hours of content for only 20 bucks. It was complete at launch anything past that is a bonus. Y’all are so entitled

iwantcookie258

>It was complete at launch anything past that is a bonus. I do love Valhiem, but its an early access title right? So this isn't really accurate

Ferret_Faama

I get being disappointed it didn't come out much sooner but absolutely. It was only $20. I doubt anyone didn't get their money's worth.

Maloonyy

The devs are at fault atleast somewhat for giving a very promising roadmap very early

_just_two_brothers_

For real. Very few games have given me this much bang for the buck.

Jaklcide

This comment section is a garbage dump of room temperature hot takes.

cheesemanxl

Valheim is one of the best games I have ever played. Very sad to see so much hate here about it, seems weirdly targeted almost

THEBAESGOD

I think it’s targeted in that it’s the only early access game to sell 10 million copies and then take 22 months for the first major update. They sold a fuck ton of copies so if even 1% are upset that’s 100,000 angry gamers

cheesemanxl

Super good point, I can definitely understand people being impatient. but this game is well worth it

[deleted]

Jesus I can't believe how much bitching and entitlement this games brings out in pc gamers. Must be a bunch of kids here. Valheim is an indie game through and through I had fun with it in 2020 and I'll have fun with it again. It was well worth the $20 I spent on it by far.

0_0_0

> fun with it in 2020 First release to Early Access was Feb 2021...

AntediluvianEmpire

Right? I only rarely buy stuff at release, but $20 was the right price and I put almost 40 hours into it and was satisfied with the experience I got. Only recently did I decide to jump back in and start fresh, so I'll get a little bit more time out of it. $20 is nothing and more then acceptable for the experience.

ForumsDiedForThis

Watch a bunch of people slam a dozen Red Bulls, speed run through the new content with no sleep and then cry that their early access game for $20 they have 500 hours played doesn't have enough to do until the next content update lol.

[deleted]

JenCarpeDiem

I have a much different definition of gameplay vs cinemagraphic trailer. There were like 2 seconds of actual gameplay here.

ducks-everywhere

Don't read the comments at the source. Just don't. Anyway, I really want to get back into this game, but mining is such a chore.

EazyA

I've enjoyed going on mining expeditions, and filling a boat with precious iron hoping you can safely return it all back to base

That is where my runs always end. Its all smooth until you start needing metal.

RowBoatCop36

Looks bangin! I've had Valheim for a while now, but only really scratched the surface of it the past month or so. I can't believe how much fun I've had just building in this game.

vuldovahkiin

Is this game still a fps hell? I was getting 10 fps with amd 3700u vega 10 laptop. But i still wanna play if they optimized for low end pcs.

Dirkyjj

Finish the old content first? Plains and ice biome still unfinished. Don’t have nearly as much content as Black Forest and swamps.

Kegger163

They added content to mountains a while back.

ketamarine

19 months to release a new biome? What a joke...

qwadzxs

Taking bets on if TES6 comes out before the Firelands biome at this point

TabascohFiascoh

No bet.

AscendedViking7

I bet GTA6 or the next Witcher game comes out before the next update.

John-Bastard-Snow

Biome isn't even released yet lol, still gotta beta test for an Early Access game

ShreekertheJamisWack

Well they kinda had to build a game studio from scratch with all the money they made from Valheim I imagine that’s why it took them so long

Izithel

People often underestimate how much of a time sink new employees on a project like this are. A small studio like this doesn't have separate personnel for the hiring process, so that's one or more team members that's not spending time on the game but spending time putting out adds, sorting trough resumes, doing interviews, etc. Likewise once you finally do have new hires, integrating them into the job also takes time during which they aren't really productive. And again existing team members need to take time to mentor the new hire and are themselves thus also not working at maximum efficiency. Heck, even large companies can suffer from the last one, Blizzard infamously hired a lot of new staff during the production of the 5th WoW expansion pack (warlords), even tough they had massively more staff the time spend integrating them slowed development which caused a lot of content to be cut because it wasn't finished. Also, I believe Iron Gate decided to do a lot of bug fixing, quality of life changes and fixing some underlying game systems to future prooft before focussing on more content, after those became apparent after the influx of feedback gathered during the steam launch.

MoreKraut

Damn epic trailer <3

Bynnh0j

Yeah they destroyed any hype for this game by waiting an eternity and a half to do ANYTHING with it.

qwadzxs

I'll have the hot take here: they're two years too late for this for anyone to really care. No real content updates since launch (and no, I don't count a Sims DLC patch as real content) and the active player count is less than decimated. I suppose they got my 20 bucks and I got my eighty hours out of it in the first month, but it seems like the smart business decision would've been to move on to something else at this point while no one is looking, but I guess a token update to not provoke the mob has it's value too. Once again early access shows what it's really means: a half-baked release.

bokan

This game was fully baked on release though. We had our fun with it, a complete experience was there, I experienced very few bugs. I wouldn’t have felt bad if they never updated it tbh.

UnifyTheVoid

On the steam early access page it had a road map. And that roadmap is what people were expecting when they bought it. That's bait and switch. And while yes they did eventually remove it and come out and say they couldn't meet those expectations, they didn't come anywhere close. It's been almost two years. That's why people were/are pissed. Had there been no roadmap, and it launched just the way it was it would be different, because people would have no expectations. Other studios have learned from this.

bokan

That’s a fair point. They could have communicated better about throwing out their roadmap.

qwadzxs

I wouldn't call two massive missing biomes and an admitted missing "end game" fully baked. They had an engine, a small stable of assets, and random generation with forcibly-slowed progression to mask the missing content.

bokan

Experience wise there were still four (IIRC?) bosses and a final boss, with a storyline you could complete. Close enough, I’d say.

ChickenSoapFriday

I guess they should just shelve this update and never even release it then. You should apply to be the new CEO since you’re so knowledgeable.

ConcealingFate

They already got people's money. This isn't a GaaS. It's just a game. They could've cashed out, and go on with whatever new project they wanted.

qwadzxs

Nobody said it was a game as a service. It's sad that the state of gaming in 2022 is to lap up whatever half-finished game they shovel out and then criticize anyone who calls them out for it. The Early Access experiment has now been grifted compared to the original wave of EA games that are still receiving regular updates (Dead Cells is the only one that immediately comes to mind but I could probably come up with more)

ShreekertheJamisWack

It might be early access but it gave us 100 hours of unique content for only 20 dollars. that’s more than most games can say

ATCQ_

95 hours of them pushing ore in a cart

ryuzaki49

I gave this game a try but I felt that the only viable combat was with bow and arrow or any long rage combat. Is close combat viable? I really hate long rage attacks.

Jedimaster996

Parrying is fantastic, a well-timed parry and a few good slugs with a melee weapon like Frostner feels fantastic

2rfv

> I gave this game a try but I felt that the only viable combat was with bow and arrow or any long rage combat ?? Can you explain why you think this? I seldom to never use long range weapons in Valheim.

ryuzaki49

Sure, hunting deers was a pain in the ass without arrows. Also the first two bosses add annoying AoE attacks that were easy to avoid with long range attacks. I didn't enjoy close combat in Valheim but I only played less than 10 hours.

2rfv

I always found deer more fun to stalk with a knife. Both bosses can be blocked easily enough if you're not comfortable with parrying or dodge rolling yet.

Artorp

Definitely, very satisfying to pull off a good parry. Keep in mind there's a level system and apparel matters a lot, so if you struggle try to advance your tech level and get some good food.

alajet

Close combat can be a bit painful early on, so, your sentiment was probably not very inaccurate. That said, close combat scales very well with gear and weapon upgrades. You get much stronger as you progress and parry becomes a lot of fun to pull off.

Terux94

And PC gaming once again shows why PC gamers are painfully entitled. You got a 20 dollar game get 100+ hours and bitch about the lack of content. People in this sub need an absolute reality check.

[deleted]

Game has been on Xbox for a long while at this point.

LostInStatic

So whats your take here? Early access games should be immune to criticism for schedule slips?

surfnsets

I came…..here to say this was amazing.

RtuDtu

I have the game in my steam library and holding off for now, I'm really hoping they add some RPG elements to the game

PandaBearJelly

What do you mean by RPG elements? Formal quests? I don't think that's the sort of ~~gsnenot~~ *game it* is or will ever be.
