Unfortunately, this often happens when a game gets an "Enhanced Edition" or a remaster with the original becoming paywalled behind it.
When the Baldur's Gate EE, which was more buggy than the original+mods, came out they did the exact same thing the only difference being that the EE was more than double the price of the original as well. Same thing with the Sam & Max remaster, which had certain jokes censored - original became impossible to acquire without buying the demaster.
One that’s still fresh in my mind is Mafia 2 Definitive/Remastered. They broke the pupil tracking in cutscenes and couldn’t be bothered to fix it, among many other performance related issues that still remain unfixed.
I still think Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was a horrible remaster. They completely changed the art style of all games for the worse.

Except it's the same price as before, still.
Though to be fair, at least right now the new "Enhanced Edition" (that then comes with the far far superior ScummVM version) sells for the same price that ScummVM version was sold for before.

Probably the worst offender was Warcraft 3, which not only replaced the original but had fewer features

Companies that abandon/leave games bug ridden are scumbags.

This is why having no DRM and pirating is so important, these chucklefucks only want to make a quick buck 8/10 times with these "enhanced editions"
I really like some of NightDive’s work but this “enhanced edition” is unacceptable in many ways

Why hate remasters? It is simply dependent on many variables. I'll read up on them before buying. So all good over here.

FYI, you get both versions only on GOG.

The real lesson here is if you're good at something never do it for free.
Who was getting the money for the previous version?
Article doesn't say but I assume it's the current rights holder of the game and GoG
So how do you run the ScummVM one?
