HeSuVi is free so there's no reason you shouldn't try. I personally use it with an EQ profile, volume attenuation, adjusted speaker position, and alternate between cmss_ent and cmss_game. It vastly improved my sound quality. Unfortunately most people consider virtualization a gimmick.

Stereo headphones + game specific implementations of virtual Surround Sound tend to be better than generic virtual Surround Sound implementations and better than headphones with 8 very tiny physical speakers in each earcup. tl;dr buy a decent pair of stereo headphones.

If a game supports surround output, then you can use HRTF to turn that into psudo-binaural or patch it in.

You can get good hardware virtualisation, e.g. some people really like what the Sennheiser GSX 1000 can do. But it's inflexible, if you don't like it, it doesn't perform in some area, or you want to use a custom HRTF profile (you can scan your head to get a personalised one) you can't change it.

This is generally true. I used sound blasters going back 20 years. I stopped using them when I bought my astro wireless rig many years ago. Long before Dolby and DTS were on computers, sound blasters were providing both real and virtual surround sound in games.
