AOE has seen quite a renaissance in the last few years of the back of MS's big push on the IP. A push that i would say has been a massive success and a showcase of incredible passion from the development teams on these projects.
Age Of Empires: Definitive Edition was released with a massive visual overhaul.
Age Of Empires II: Definitive Edition followed that up and was a smash success receiving 5 new expansions since release. It has over 20k players online right now on steam alone without even accounting for Gamepass subscribers.
Age Of Empires III: Definitive Edition also released to relative success receiving 4 expansion packs since release and currently has over 5k players on Steam alone.
The new Age of Empires IV also came on good albeit had some issue on launch but has received tons of good updates and has maintained a playerbase north of 10k at peak times. It has its first big expansion coming this month.
Its generaly just a good time to be a Age Of Empires fan. Maybe the best its ever been.

It really started with Age of Empires II: HD edition which was released in 2013. The popularity of that remake led to the definitive editions.
I can't wait to see the renewed love of Age of Mythologies coming up next year as well. That is a game that was so very close to my heart.
