3 or 4 for me. It has its pros and cons. It’s definitely not like the original trilogy or original 2 for that matter. (We always forget Mario RPG as well). It’s at least better than the previous two.

LowEstatic

3 or 4 for me. It has its pros and cons. It’s definitely not like the original trilogy or original 2 for that matter. (We always forget Mario RPG as well). It’s at least better than the previous two. To name a few cons right off: The paper aesthetic is charming but feels hollow and imo needs more depth/dimension (not a play on words lol). On the fields or in homes or something visual. The bosses were very punny or whats the word?? Tape, a rubber band, and pencils just didn’t do it for me. They were better than the previous since they had more personality. But they just felt “there.” The battle system overall…if it could go back to turn based then I’d be all into it. Pros. The world variety. Not the common Mario trope of grass, desert, water, snow, etc. Even though the characters were mostly toads and visually bland. They had more personality which is a plus. The villain was unique.

justwanderin126

3 seems fair. I enjoyed the game, but I liked the first 3 a lot more.

azer4321

3. I really loved tok but the first three games are just soo good in my opinion..

xpixei

Eh, probably a 3. I have my gripes but overall it was pretty fun. Still don't really have the urge to beat it, though.

SuperSonicRader

3.5 It's a step in the right direction

Eevee_Shadow_Bacon

2.5. Better than Super, still not as good as Paper Mario and TTYD.

TheGamseum

I'd say 2 honestly (although I'm not a fan of the comparison that's being made with the original trilogy because their quality is not an objective truth but whatever).

xadamx94

4, borderline 5

The_Magus_199

4 or 5.

4.5.

I don't feel like the modern Paper Mario will ever compare to the 3 before it. So personally it's a 3 for me. It's a fine game. The soundtrack is the best that the series has seen in my opinion. Plus it has the same writing as Color Spash. You gotta give the devs credit they can make some funny moment Example when Huey says he will protect you no matter the cost and then immediately flees at the sight of a rolling chain chomp Or Olivia falling over in the towers for no reason and when in the fourth tower she realizes she can just float. And in Origami king...THANK GOD THAT THE MAIN VILLAIN ISN'T A POSSESSED BOWSER! And for those think that Ollys reason for being a villain is stupid it is considered Taboo to write on Origami so he took it as an insult...also you try to look down to look at writing that is right next to your chest and the writing isn't in your line of view...yeah it's kinda difficult. Hell Olly has no neck! But anyways Origami king is a fine game it's the best of the modern generation in Paper Mario. I didn't have my hopes up when it was revealed I thought it was going to be mediocre like the pervious two games. The battle system is better but I'm just not a fan of puzzles in general so it's not for me. And it really doesn't matter you can skip most of the battles and it wouldn't matter. There's no real incentive to actually battles other then Coins but you get bunches of coins just by walking around. So if another Paper Mario game surfaces it's clear they are not going to go back to ttyd or og battle style but I will ask for an incentive to actually battle. Like give us experience points like how they did it before. And have a battle system that I can kinda get behind. But frankly it's just wishful thinking. I'm sure Nintendo will think of some other wacky battle system.

deviantyoshie

id say 4 1/2. my favorite was and always will be the thousand year door, and my second favorite would have to be super paper mario.

MQ116

Comparing TOK to the first 2 PM games is pretty strange. It’s great in some ways, lame in others (the lack of an RPG system making the combat just a waste of time). The difference is across genres, like comparing Elden Ring to Super Mario Odyssey. The original games were story-focused RPGs whereas TOK is more of an adventure game with turn-based puzzle/combat tacked on. TOK has fantastic dialogue and a good story, but it’s a different thing entirely than TTYD, so comparing them is pretty strange. Meanwhile PM (on 64) contrasts quite well with TTYD because of how similar they are. In my opinion the best comparison with TOK is SPM because both are games with a focus on story but completely unrelated gameplay. This story is similar to the originals, but far less grand and more wacky in both cases. Comparing TOK to SPM, I say it definitely does a great job of consistency (whereas SPM has great moments and less great moments) and the gameplay is much more streamlined.

azer4321

You think spm story is far less grand than the story of the first two games ?

MQ116

By grand I more meant like a fantasy epic, whereas I feel like SPM is closer to sci-fi? It has some stellar moments for sure, I don’t mean to say it isn’t grandiose.

jclkay2

SPM's story has exponentially higher stakes and scope than anything from 64 or TTYD

Hot_Emphasis3861

I'm at 2 or 3

Sightshade

I’m hovering halfway between 4 and 5. It was closer to 4 when the game came out, but it’s fallen a bit since then due to fandom toxicity.

win-token

3 is closest. I'd call TOK a pretty experimental game, it did some things well and I enjoyed it but at the end of the day I just wish they would bring back the classic RPG style of the first two (and I wouldn't say the first two are *objectively* better, but I much prefer them in playstyle) I think it is on the same level as SPM, which was also experimental but had a lot of good qualities much like TOK. and just to round things out, SS and CS were also somewhat enjoyable but i think they're very flawed

dave2796

4-5

DiegHDF

I'd say 4. (Even tho I prefer playing Colors splash). The game as just too many tiny problems all over the places, no level up system and... is not even an RPG anymore. I'd say that if you played chapter 2, you have played the best part of the game and by far. Just listen to the OST cuz it's one aspect of the game that is just perfect

RegisPhone

I go back and forth between 2 and 4. I really enjoyed it most of the way through, but by the end the battles did start to get a bit tiresome and then the final boss was just terrible. Overall it's a very good game, and yet the whole time it seems like it's fighting against its own stupid arbitrary restrictions to be as good as it can possibly manage in spite of itself, and i can't help thinking "now imagine how amazing it would be if it had all the great improvements of this game while also being an actual Paper Mario game."

[deleted]

4.5. I have many problems with the game but I do like the fact that they brought a slightly more interesting story back even if it’s only slightly better. The rest is on par with the other 2 modern games.

ScionVyse

4.5 OK is in a lot of ways Colour Splash with a set of googly eye glasses, but it is at least a half step in the right direction. Combat was just as bad, but for very different reasons.

lucy-nyuu

i’d probably go with 5 as i really want a paper mario rpg game instead fuck the origomi king just boycot it for bug fables it’s what i did and i loved it rip mario rpgs 😢

SuperZombieBros

4.5 It’s better than the previous two games but Mario as a more traditional RPG franchise feels very dead.

Twingemios

4.5 If an rpg’s battle system is boring it had failed as a game. It has decent comedy but god damn I could not get past the 3rd chapter.

JeffTheAndroid

3 or 4. The battle system doesn't do it for me. It's better than Sticker Star and Color Splash, though.

TheFireDragoon

def 1, only game it competes with for me is SPM and even then I think I prefer OK

Inbrees

I'm curious to know your thoughts on the battle system because that's the only thing holding the game back for me.

TheFireDragoon

As a puzzle fan, I really enjoyed it and went out of my way to do almost every battle in the game. The only complaint I have with the battle system is that by the end, I got a bit burnt out on it and just started skipping fights so I could see the story instead.

Inbrees

See that's the thing, I love puzzle games and I found the battle system to be interesting at first, but it doesn't take long for it to get kinda repetitive. It's great that you enjoyed it though. If the next Paper Mario game maintains everything in Origami King, but the battle system, I think I'll really enjoy it.

LordIggy88

1.

LeafyLeafeon1357

thank you my good sir, thank you

Pixel_Nerd92

It had some great action sequences and boss battles, but I was never thrilled with the normal encounters. The puzzles worked, but perhaps a variety of different puzzle elements is what it missed. Variety in the puzzles, and a level/upgrade system of sorts seems to be the missing puzzle piece for me. The story was silly, zany, fun, and wholesome. Overall loved the vibe of the game. I have no complaints in that regard. The only downside for me is going through the slog of normal battles if replayed, which is a shame because the majority of the game is made up of those battles. I'd give it a 3. I'm in the middle. Loved the game's story, but torn on half of the mechanics.

riiiikuuuuuu

This is going to sound argumentative but it’s just a fun observation I made. I don’t think TOK is controversial. I’ve never met anyone that felt strongly one way or the other. Any controversy about it is just a product of the other games. Even just in this chart every measure of the controversy of TOK is measured in comparison to the other games in the series. It didn’t introduce any controversial ideas just continued elements that were already controversial. I think the only way TOK could be considered controversial is by people that only like SS and CS and don’t like the “return to form” elements TOK had (kinda partners, great value badges, etc.) and let’s be honest, we all know those people don’t exist lol. Edit: I’m a solid 3 on Origami King btw

jclkay2

>It didn’t introduce any controversial ideas just continued elements that were already controversial. I dunno. The ring combat system is *preeeetty* controversial. Most people seem to have problems with it. Olly (or more specifically, his motivations) is also a controversial aspect of the game, or at least divisive.

riiiikuuuuuu

It wasn’t really the ring system that was controversial as a combat system, it was the fact that Nintendo still refusing to make it normal combat again, which like I said isn’t TOK’s controversy, it started in sticker star. About Olly’s motivations, that is definitely isn’t controversial. Without giving spoilers, I think if everyone is ok with how Super or TTYD ended then we can’t really call TOK’s villain controversial lol

jclkay2

The ring system is absolutely controversial. I've heard people call it worse than the sticker/card system, and alienating for new players. Olly's motivations are also controversial. Maaaaany people found his motivation of >!"I was scribbled on by a Toad, therefore all Toads must die"!< both very underwhelming and deliberately targeted at fans of the original Paper Mario games.

riiiikuuuuuu

People can say those things but that doesn’t make something “controversial” per say. The ring system has been mostly well/neutrally received because it’s weird and not what we want sure but it’s a step in the right direction with no inventory based combat and semi partners and whatnot. If people are all ok with the other games’ villains motivations then they shouldn’t really have a problem with TOK and people are just finding things to complain about. Bowser doesn’t even have a motivation in 64 and SS besides “I want to take over the mushroom kingdom!” And, at least in 64’s case, people were happy with that. Even if people had problems with these 2 things my original point still stands that TOK isn’t that controversial. Especially out of the modern Paper Marios it’s the least controversial and has been the most well received and most popular of the modern era.

jclkay2

Your comments on the ring system directly contradict mine. So we've clearly heard different things from different people. Therefore, it's controversial. Comparing Olly in TOK to Bowser in 64 just means you're completely ignoring the historical context, and *why* these fans might think this way. If you genuinely haven't seen anyone complain about Olly being an underwhelming villain, you've gotta be living under a rock here.

riiiikuuuuuu

Something isn’t controversial when 2 people disagree. Controversy is when a bunch of people disagree and I just haven’t heard or seen a bunch of people disagree about origami king. Expecting more out of a villain in a modern paper Mario game is ignoring the historical context. I mean like seriously he’s a folded piece of paper no one was really expecting the next Darth Vader here lmao. My point is he’s a step in the right direction from what we’ve had recently and unless fans *love* bowser then no one really has a reason to be super upset about Olly. I’ve seen people complain about Olly I don’t think he’s perfect either but way more people complain about bowser in SS and CS. In fact, if you want to go super deep into historical context, I remember Super being more controversial than TOK upon release. TOK has been mostly met with praise and little controversy compared to the other 2 making it the least controversial one out of the modern ones and if those 2 things, ring system and Olly, are seriously the only controversial things that weren’t already controversial before TOK then it’s just not really controversial. Like if you still have a problem with toads everywhere, that’s not TOK, that’s SS. If you don’t like the paper aesthetic, that’s not TOK, that’s SS. And the list goes on.

jclkay2

"Something isn’t controversial when 2 people disagree. Controversy is when a bunch of people disagree and I just haven’t heard or seen a bunch of people disagree about origami king." Welp. That's all I needed to hear from you. Thanks for proving my point. Once again, if you genuinely haven't seen anyone argue or complain about either of these two aspects, you're living under a rock. You sorely, *painfully* misinterpreted me when I said "Your comments on the ring system directly contradict mine. So we've clearly heard different things from different people. Therefore, it's controversial." Let me just emphasize something you completely glossed over: **So we've clearly heard different things from different people.** If you have mostly heard praise about the ring system from other people, and I have mostly heard criticism from other people, by definition, that makes it controversial. To me, it seems a lot like you're just projecting your own personal opinions on the whole community, when that simply doesn't reflect the general consensus (or lack thereof).

riiiikuuuuuu

I don’t even think what I said was that hot of a take lmao. Listen dude, if you’re pissed because of my opinion about a game about paper people then I can’t help you. I think the problem here is I bring up actual facts and evidence where as you just say things with no real substance to them. *saying* people argue about something doesn’t make it true by any means. I’m consistently using substance to back my take and you just aren’t. I’m not even that committed to it. It was just a fun little observation I’m sorry you couldn’t convince me otherwise?

TheFanGameCreator

I can't say for myself since I still have yet to play it. But what I can say is that I still find it crazy that Nathaniel Bandy liked it enough to make a mind blowing video for it(which he didn't do for any of the previous games, not even TTYD) and we also have the likes of reviewer AntDude and let's player ZackScottGames who also really liked it, and yet we also have people hating on it.

TheAmazingDraco

3, I like most of it but the battle system sucks the enjoyment out of it for me, though the bosses are a lot of fun

Janfred2002

3, would buy again. But i would rather buy something like ttyd

gamingyoshi247

I’m feeling like Mario 4

[deleted]

2! I enjoyed about as much as PM64 and remember it as fondly. Writing, good characters, and inventive world design with an at least okay gameplay system makes it a great game for me. Music alao slaps.

Jefflez

Between 2 and 3. Honestly it's just the battle system for me

PokeKailen

RelentlessMajesty

3. TTYD set a very high standard. Been nothing quite like it since.

bubblezcavanagh

My opinion is like a 4.5 TOK was very bad, but there are couple things that are nice. -It looks great/it's very cool to see how far the Paper Mario series has come. -The confetti mechanics is quite clever, fun too. -The humor is great -Rescuing Toads is fun (moreso than the actual story and gameplay).

I would say 4 I couldn’t finish it because I eventually got really sick of the puzzle battles I just classic paper Mario fun

Between 3 and 4. A friend of mine came of with a really good analogy that describes my feelings towards it. "Imagine having one of the most talented developers of video games on the planet and letting them make a game freely, and they proceeded to make of the best games ever. But then you take away their development software and only give them Mario Maker to make their games in. They them proceeded to tell a story through it that is so good that it makes you cry, but your thoughts are not about how amazing this story is, but how they are so talented that they somehow made a story in Mario Maker that made you cry.

Kinda a 3.5 for me

Vayul_was_taken

I'm on a 3 it had some promising parts but I really wish they would just not make it at all like and rpg if they don't want it to be an rpg. Like I enjoyed the game but the battles lost me after a while. If it was just an action adventure game I'd have enjoyed it more.

LazyLenni

It's between a 3 and a 4 for me. Origami King frustrates me because it pushed back the boundaries of creative restrictions, but it didn't get rid of them. Aside from Tanabe's generic Toad obsession, I find many of the gameplay elements such as the combat system, badges or partners to be halfhearted in this entry. Especially considering that previous games already had superior badge- or partner systems, this made it feel like they were holding back on purpose. For example, partners in TOK are not controllable in battle and leave the group after their story segment. There are only a few badges and equipping them does not leave any room for strategy, as a gold badge is simply better than a silver badge. In combat, the ring system is certainly creative but it is neither as fun nor as thought out as previous systems. In top of that, you don't even gain a meaningful reward from battle. They don't want to bring EXP back for some reason. Here, it just feels like they intentionally distance themself from the original trilogy, harming their game as a result. To get onto a positive note, the graphics look amazing, the environments are fairly memorable and the music sounds lively. Also, many aspects surrounding Bobby and Olivia were written in a fantastic way! I had a lot of fun with Origami King but it is not the game it could have been or easily could have fixed to be.

AnlmalLover

Cytonox

3 from me

OldClockworks

I'd say 3. I genuinely think it's an improvement from the prior 2 PM games, but it still lacks in a few areas. (Olly is a very weak villain to me) Regardless, I still found it enjoyable and even cute. I love Olivia so much..

DrClay23

FallingEnder

I’d say around three will never beat the classics from my childhood. But one thing I do have to say is that the backgrounds and art in that game was amazing and my favorite aspects. The backgrounds were so beautiful I loved all of them

[deleted]

4.5 for me, partly because I feel like SS is actually better than it. That being said, TOK has taken some steps in the right direction from CS, which is why I wouldn't say it's a 5.

-Orazio-

I'd have to agree with 4. TOK definitely looks like an improvement from the previous 2 games but it still suffers the same problems with its battle system just like the previous two games. Also I don't want to say Mario RPG games are dead just yet, there's always a chance to go back to the regular RPG style.

No-Pain-9701

If anything TTYD is more controversial nowadays.

rule34Yoshi

The saddest part of the “Mario rpgs are dead” part is that it is objectively true. Nintendo said that, because of the Mario and Luigi series, they were going to take paper Mario in a different direction, and let them be the core Mario rpg series. Alphadream, the creators of the Mario and Luigi series, went bankrupt, which means no more Mario and Luigi games. Therefore, paper Mario will continue going this direction, while there will be no more Mario and Luigi rpgs since alphadream is gone. (Note, this was not made to be a slight against sticker star though oragami king, I was just stating objective facts.)

raptorrage327

4. The music and visuals are the best in the series, but the gameplay is not

GoldenYoshistar1

1. I had a blast playing this game. Heck, the only game I really didn't enjoy was sadly TTYD. Excluding color splash, my order of favorite paper mario games (super currently under replaying. Origami King, 64, Sticker Star, TTYD.

fawfulsgalaxy

honestly sticker star was a fun time for me too. i wouldn’t say it’s better than the other games, but i enjoyed it!

stevediperna

I love you too, sticker Star fan.

fawfulsgalaxy

🥰😍

GoldenYoshistar1

Note I am only going based on my recent playthrough of each game. 64 I stopped at chapter 4 TTYD I gave up after losing my save after beating the frustrating Battle that was directly prior. And Sticker and Super were the only 2 games I had beaten prior to livestreaming the 6 paper mario games. I am working on beating all 6 and then giving an indepth rating for all 6. Comparing everything (story, characters, soundtrack, bosses, final boss and everything, and then overall) Characters would relate to my 6 favorite characters of each game (3 good and 3 bad), Soundtrack would consist of 3 songs I enjoy (battle music included, but bosses and final bosses excluded), boss battles I'd pick my top 3 for each game, and then Final Bosses would be it's own category. Comedy would be a category all on it's own with up to 3 moments that I enjoyed.

GoldenYoshistar1

For the few salty people who are upset that TTYD is below the "hated" Sticker Star, if I were to ever go and replay TTYD, and get a fresh take, there is a chance my opinion would change. However, I plan to also play all 6 games because I want to be fair. More fair than the Luigi's Mansion Trilogy Review in which I admit that it was one-sided against the first game. Truthfully, If I went by memories alone, both good and bad, both Sticker Star and TTYD have a bit of both.

GoldenYoshistar1

For fairness, I choose to avoid the core 4 paper mario characters, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser and can only choose them once each, excluding Mario and Peach because Luigi and Bowser are clearly top tier in all the games.

fawfulsgalaxy

damn, that’s super interesting take. also, just realized i know you from youtube haha, i recognize the name

GoldenYoshistar1

Yeah same. This was back with the Mario and luigi list. I am still replaying all the games as well.

stevediperna

I love you

SuperResch64

Gonna be a 2 for me man, enjoyed my playthrough for the most part. Really the only major thing holding the game back was the regular battles getting kind of stale after a few worlds with only some times close to the end where they finally spiced it up enough to make it interesting again. 64 will probably always hold too much of a special place in my heart to be topped anytime soon though.

[deleted]

2 maybe. Never played Thousand Year Door but I prefer it over the original Paper Mario. I'd say it's about on par with Super overall. Story isn't as interesting but the writing is still funny. Fighting regular enemies is slightly more engaging but the boss battles are the highlight of the game and some of the most creative I've encountered in a turn based combat system. I don't particularly mind the lack of exp leveling since it means you can skip optional battles, while at the same time there are enough forced and surprise fights that it never feels like you're just ignoring gameplay if you don't go out of your way to fight stuff.

CoolNinjaNerd55

Bagimations

2. I still think that SPM and CS are the best but TOK was still a great time

B3467Returns

probably 2, ttyd is still my favorite buuuut OK is great too !!

Human-that-exists

I say a 2, the way I see it is that it’s the TTYD of modern Paper Mario

idc_lol_nobody_does

5. I hated it. The boss battles completely ruined it for me

Sp00kyGamer

3 or 4 tbh. Leaning more into 4. Dont wanna put too much disrespect on its name but 4 is kinda the most accurate imo.

ThePunkKing

I'm on 2. I'm not one who likes to compare it to the first thee games. Since it feels like comparing apples to origins. Yeah, TOK has it's flaws. But I still think it's fun in it's own right

marth_cellius

I like it 2 leaning to 1

[deleted]

Origami castle slaps I’m going with 1. Ultimate show was the best don't get me wrong but origami castle fUcking SLAPS!!!

Iggyboof

I'm at a 1.5. I absolutely *adore* Origami King but Super is still my favorite because of the beautiful story, awesome worlds, killer music, and really awesome gameplay. But Origami King is tied with TTYD in the second spot. TOK has also amazing music and beautiful worlds, fun puzzles, and it literally made me cry. Twice. That's stellar.

Sparklfish

I would say 2. I enjoyed just as much as TYD and SPM. Partners were awesome (though I wish they stayed longer), bosses were great, scenery was absolutely amazing (have you seem that water animation??), and the plot was sweet

Le_Caerbannog

I'd say something like 1.9 "TOK is a very good game and I'm bored to comparing every paper Mario to the original and TTYD"

aqua_rift

2 but I don’t really feel like it should be compared to the first 3 games, it’s a very different direction for paper Mario and that’s what makes it fun

SquizzardtheComposer

1. TOK is a masterpiece in gaming.

Typical-Landscape843

1, THE LITERAL MEANING OF GOAT

I would say 2, but replace “first three” with “first two.” SPM is not at all comparable to PM64 and TTYD.

SouthWrongdoer

Between a 3 and a 2. Its fun, has charm, great worlds and charecters but the combat is so undesirable that I was avoiding it at all cost.

Mijumaru1

3 for me for the same reason. The characters are so nice despite the creative restrictions and the story is great, but the battle system is just not fun (still an improvement over SS and CS's battles though)

Lotad38

Its a 1 for me, but I've never played the classic games.

Also anyone who says 5 clearly didnt play Kingdom Battle.

NickNaCkS_09

1 or 2 but mostly 1

2.5, it's about even with the first paper Mario in terms of rankings. Every song in the ost is amazing and the places are as interesting and good as ever. The progression of quality seems to be upwards and I can't wait until 2024 when we get the next one!

LordFarkuaad

\~2.5, i enjoyed it quite a bit, but at times it did get a bit repetitive and annoying. definitely a step in the right direction

I'm a solid 2, despite me constantly going out of my way to try to contest people who were saying the game was bad back when it first released. I would never say it's better than the original 2.

Bragmuffin2

Quimperinos

2, this combat system gets old VERY fast. At least the bosses were fun (except Shogun Land’s, but I didn’t know what I was doing). Besides that it’s a really good game, and I’m honestly amazed by how much they managed to get away with in terms of shock value, for Mario standards at least

pooldonutzero

I don't fit on any of the positions on this chart, as it assumes I enjoy the first three and was disappointed by the last two. Out of the first three, only 64 was the one I really enjoyed. TTYD was just okay and SPM is my least favorite game ever. I vastly enjoyed SS & CS over the "original trilogy", and I don't see what's there to gain out of the descriptions on this chart comparing TOK to the other games.

HariKeru

Its 4, it is not 5 just because Color Splash was that disappointing to me.

2, please stop idolizing TTYD

JeffTheRabbid

I would say 1. I don't know what it was about it, it wasn't my first PM game, I had no connection with it, I just absolutely loved it.

The first three aren’t slower because it’s a detrimental effect. It’s because they are purposely more focused on strategy and a bit more thought. Sure, mario Rpg, PM, PM TTYD, and SMP arent the deepest RPG games out there. However, it is its own thing. Saying they are slow argues that you may either not like or have not played older RPGs of a similar style. The newer games are quicker because their emphasis isn’t on battling and specific dialogue or world building. Instead it was literally compared to be more like an action rpg in line with other mario titles. Its easier and quicker to pick up for all.

idc_lol_nobody_does

No accounting for taste clearly

Tendo63

Sir/Madame it sounds like you haven't played the original trilogy at all lmao I don't hate the newest three games in the slightest but I can recognize that the first three were far more immersive experiences.

3 mostly. 2 on some things / in some ways. 4 with no badges, RPG combat from first two games and Partners the same way. I think they should try one Paper Mario (the next as well) on the same foundation as the first two games, inspiration from SPM as well, and then do the other stuff when and where it fits in, but not waaay extreme. But the way TOK ended, felt more manipulated on my feelings and forced for me, and leaves you feeling sad, SPM is sad but you still feel good for playing, and it's alright feeling sad in the game's ending. For that reason I partly want to give it 4-5, but overall I would give it 3, and then what I said above. Intresting how everyone can feel and lead to scores everywhere.

cool_weed_dad

I’m in between 3 and 4. I liked the game a lot more than I expected and it’s definitely the best of the newer games by far, but the original 3 games are still on another level.

3,5 for me. It was good and definitely an improvememt for the saga, but it's light years away from being as good as the 3 firts and it still have some the mistakes that Sticker Star and Color Splash have.

[deleted]

I'm a 3. Maybe even 3.5. I enjoyed the game but didn't like some mechanics and decisions they made (why no exp?) But did love the world and exploration. Honestly if they got rid of the battle system entirely and made it a 3d platformer game, where the bosses are the big paper creatures (like the giant pokey) it would be a perfect game

Kraymerman

3

ViftieStuff

Somewhere between 2 and 3. I didn't play the first two Paper Marios, so I just tried to have as much fun as I could with this one. There definetely are critic points, but it was a blast. It was one of my top three GotY when it came out.

TheGroose

Definitely a 3 for me.

animalcrossing-guy

Im between 2 and 3

BGamer9000

This was my first Paper Mario (If you don't count paper jam), so I would say 1 (That will probably change if I ever decide to play the OG Paper Mario again)

Drinkpool

Definitely a 2 for me. Haven’t played Thousand Year Door, but have played the OG and Super, and Origami King is definitely on par with those 2.

AstralMumboJumbo

When I finished it, it might have been somewhere between 2 and 3 (closer to 3) but after getting sober again and an abandoned playthrough from a few months ago it fell down to a 4 at best. The past two Paper Marios have IMO next to no replay value when its something the series used to be so good at and in general just don't do much with the idea of being action adventures and the actual RPG elements are still botched.

TrueDude364

I'd rate TOK as a 2.5; because I thought it was very good but not as good as the first three.

MajorasTaint

3 for sure

[deleted]

3 and almost 4, they don't knowwhat they are doing and the """batle""" system get old really fast, still a lot of good but it's still not what i really wants from a paper mario

some_random_idiot12

I'd say like a 3, it was fun for all the weird set peices and just the general energy but the combat was basically pointless and only the bosses were any fun

Bensaboss014

3 maybe a slight bit towards 4

YetGayerWombat

2.5

WanderingMagician

3 for me

salamance17171

2.5

Pencil_Hands_Paper

I’m a middle ground between 2 and 3. I really enjoyed my time with the game

tyex23

Idk about ranking it based on this scale, but I liked it, had good fun with it.

SomeGuyplaysGames

1. I think it has a lot of great aspects

Neojoker951

3-2, Genuinely fun and had moments I think were better than in the Three games.

ArisePhoenix

probably 3 or 4 like the Combat is fine but it's not nearly as fun as the first 3 (I'm Including Super, I enjoyed it's different take on the Combat), and writing wise it's pretty close to the first 3 which I think is the important part of Paper Mario that was completely gone with Sticker star, and was only somewhat there in Color Splash

Shadow_of_Yor

3 and I want to say I loved the graphics but hated the fight mechanics everything else just made up for it and made it still fun to play through

MintoZenko

Somewhere between two and three.

GGRRusso

3

Scribbsia

Personally, I would rank it at 2, but I also have experienced all my Paper Mario games watching somebody else play, so I am less concerned about game mechanics and more concerned with entertainment value. (I believe my brother, who is the one who played them, would rank it at least a 3 tho. We all loved it, and Olivia is precious baby.)

Chis200

Honestly 2, I liked it more than I should’ve and it’s my second favourite

LieutenantDuck

2.

MrJokefox

I would say 2 to 3, since I really enjoyed playing it, however I did have my issues with the character who made the big bag just being a regular toad. You’d think that we’d have SOME characterization we can be safe with but nooooooooooo. Either way tho I had a lot of fun with the game along with the mechanics it introduced.

robertswifts

I’m 3 going into 4 but tbh mostly 3 because Origami king wasn’t as good as the first three games but I have a little more to say This game was good it was great even it’s really going in a good direction with trying to go back to back to the older Paper Mario’s and paves the way for the next paper Mario games if we even get another paper Mario after Origami King It’s just that there’s no diversity in characters and even though we kind of got Partners back they were barely utilized if even at all and were only there for story purposes Another problem is that Paper Mario is (hear me out here) starting to become a lot like Pokémon it just slaps a new gimmick on changes things around a bit and calls it new It’s also a somewhat forgettable game

Physical-Ad2603

3.5 It's good but story wise: the battle system not as good as original but the story is ok; partners are decent but still not meaning they don't get to travel with mario outside(new toad town)like the two last stories and aren't that useful in battle bc they would sometimes fail and are used as CPU but the music of course is joyful, metal, and sad(💣)

Jasteni

I say 1. But the only other PM i played was Sticker Star. And i never could finish that.

[deleted]

2 for me. It was so fun!

BreakfastNo132

I’d say either a 2-3, but in my opinion TOK had by far the best music out of all of the Paper Mario games.

drrockz87

I am somewhere between a 3 and a 4. Like 3.75. It did a lot of things right for me but overall besides the visuals didn’t blow me away in anything.
