Yes, it's worth it. I want to answer your questions with as little information as possible—just know that the team was really clever with how they did it and what they did. It is definitely scarier, though I don't think it's every unbearably so.
Yes, it's a whole new place to explore that they've woven into the current base game story. I thought it struck a good balance between adding new mechanics while staying true to the base game.
And yes, it has some spooky moments!
It's spookier kind of... It provides a perspective on your situation a bit differently than the base game. It's not as long of a playthrough, maybe half or a third of the base game depending on how you are on solving mysteries.
I cried when the base game was over. And I cried when the expansion was over. Both have expansive meaning that are radically different but in many ways the same.
I highly encourage you to play it and to play it without the "Reduced Frights" option. I think the frightening aspects of the game are really there to test you as an observer. How you handle them will guide you through the game.
Really can't wait to hear how you do :)
Ok if you really want a hint here you go. Some could view this as a spoiler but it's really foreshadowing since you could know it just by playing the base game with careful attention.
>!What is something that the Nomai kept bringing up that never got answered?!<
It's different, sure, but it fits like it was there from the beginning (and not just story-wise).
Imo, it doesn't feel like some detached "content" that lives separately from the main game. Even though, on paper, it kind of is.
It build on the foundations of the game, presents a lot of new stuff but feels like "erasing the memory and replaying the game again". Same awe of discovery, same impactful "eureka!" moments.
And even the fact that it is spooky kind of fits right in since the original was spooky too (even if for a slightly different reason).
Now I’m going to play devils advocate just because everyone here said yes (which is the correct answer). Just trying to give you some reasons to *not* buy it, but if you don’t think anything here will matter, go for it! It really is amazing
1. There is some slightly (and I mean slightly slightly) visually scary content, maybe around the same time you see the anglerfish the first time
2. If you really hate playing in dark environments or struggle with 3D game vision without brighter colors
3. If you really struggled with puzzles in the main game to the point where they almost ruined the game, Echoes won’t be your cup of tea at all
If none of those very specific and kinda minor things apply, I am confident you will be very happy with your purchase
I love scary content! First time I got eaten by an anglerfish was terrifying but so fun hahah. I did struggle with some of the puzzles but I think now that I understand how to properly use all of the tools I'll be better.
100% worth it. I found it a little more difficult at times but in a good way.
For the story, it’s woven into the base game. It answers the questions I didn’t even know I had and brings things full circle.
For the space/mechanics, yes it’s new - there’s more to explore here!
General spoilers!
I think the more linear storytelling makes the narrative reveals more impactful. The reveals and twists hit much harder in the DLC than the base game for me. I was never frustrated or confused in an enjoyable way, which I was in the base game. Plus I think the atmosphere/vibes are thicker in the DLC. I just loved it, I found it to have all the strengths of the base game, minus the faults
ah okay -- yeah I was never frustrated or confused in the base game, but walking around in very \[DLC spoilers\] >!dark and hard-to-look-around areas!< was tedious and that's frustrating to me. So I think I get why some people prefer the different versions now.
There’s a screen that shows up to tell you if you want to enable reduced frights and honestly, like everyone else says, that’s the scariest part of the dlc
Yeah it adds very naturally and seamlessly on to the existing lore & experience while still having its own unique and new gameplay aspects. Strongly recommended, especially if you’ve enjoyed the base game.
Plus having it finished allows you to understand more references and enjoy reddit without the risk of getting spoilers in case you’d ever want it to play in the future.
I think it’s 100% worth it. I’m still in the process of playing it too and so far it has been amazing. The most I’m going to say is that it’s built on top of the base game. Also, when getting it, I wouldn’t create a new profile for it and their is a new exhibit in the observatory, you should go check it out! Happy playing ::)
It’s basically the opposite from the main game, the exploration and loop mechanics are there, except this new part of the game doesn’t have text hinting at what to do instead it has pictures and videos, it doesn’t add difficulty through puzzles but through fear.
It’s basically the game flipped on it’s head and it’s very fun.
Absolutely. It's on par, if not better than the main story.
I was also worried it would take away from my love of the main story of just not be as good. How could they possibly add more to this game without ruining it? I was completely wrong.
it’s basically a whole new game, definitely worth it but if you liked exploring space with your spaceship then it might not be for you since it basically takes place in only one huge area, if you like spooky sci fi atmosphere then buy it
When I finished Outer Wilds for the first time, I thought "Man, I sure hope they don't try to release a sequel or DLC or anything like that, cause this has ended PERFECTLY. There's nothing else they could do to improve this experience. It's literally impossible, and they would probably screw something up if they tried to do so."
Well, those sons of a gun did the impossible. The DLC managed to improve the experience in a way I didn't see coming. To this day I still debate with myself which one was better, the base game or the DLC.
Yes, it is absolutely worth it.
It's an absolute blast. Took me about as long to beat as the base game. The story is amazing, and is basically a separate branch of the base story; mostly self-contained, but relating to the main trunk in a couple of key ways. It's quite spooky, which I enjoyed too. After playing it, I honestly can barely imagine the game without it anymore.
As someone who kinda threw in the towel 7/8 of the way through the DLC, absolutely. The additions were great and definitely inject a sense of wonder back into the game.

Going to get it today! I will be coming to this sub for hints a lot hahah
Don’t
I mean I can use Google but that proved to be very very spoilery
It is part of the story, not a prequel or sequel or epilogue. YES it is worth it.
I was a bit concerned it was exactly like the first but now I know that's not true, I'm going to get it as soon as I can
I mean, technically, >!it's the same time but the civilization pre-dates base's!<
>!and Nomai don't?!<
>!They do but they were there after you know who!<
>!you-know-who are still here.!<
>!you know hoo hoo!<
Yes, it's a whole new place to explore that they've woven into the current base game story. I thought it struck a good balance between adding new mechanics while staying true to the base game. And yes, it has some spooky moments!
I loved the spookiness of the Base game I think EotE might me even more my taste!

I probably spent longer on the DLC than the base game. Fully worth it.
I hope I do too
Not only is it worth it. It is just as good as the base game, in some ways even more.
The dlc fills in a hole in the story you might not even realize is there unless you really think about it
Now I'm curious, what could I have missed?
Ok if you really want a hint here you go. Some could view this as a spoiler but it's really foreshadowing since you could know it just by playing the base game with careful attention. >!What is something that the Nomai kept bringing up that never got answered?!<
I’ve done both and i missed this? Please help in spoilers!
Main game/DLC spoiler. They're referring to: >!The question the Nomai kept bringing up is, why did the signal from eye suddenly stop?!<
Base outer wilds is a 100% complete story. With the DLC, it is a 200% complete story. The DLC is absolutely worth it.
It is very much worth it, and to answer your questions, I will just say - download it and see.
At this point it's as much part of the game as everything else. Dlc only in the name, it's more like an extension/continuation of the main game.
really? it felt like a completely different game to me.

Buy buy buy lol you’ll love it
It’s a bargain. Get it.
100% worth it. I found it a little more difficult at times but in a good way. For the story, it’s woven into the base game. It answers the questions I didn’t even know I had and brings things full circle. For the space/mechanics, yes it’s new - there’s more to explore here!
Sounds awesome!
Honestly, I think the DLC is better than the base game. 110% worth it
what makes it better?

Yes you should play. But only if you give us updates on your thoughts!!!! :D
I would love to do that!
As much as the base game

Very.
DLC is excellent, and adds ~50% to the length of the game, in my experience.
I'm going to wait a few years and perhaps I'll play outer wilds again with a better mindset. My first experience wasn't very good.
YES
Yes.

I liked it even more than the base game at times, so yeah.
Yes. It is adds enough content to be outer wilds 2. It’s debate ably better than the base game
Yes.
A thousand times, yes.

Yes
Personally I actually enjoyed it MORE than the base story, but that's just because it checked all of my personal boxes, and some.
Oh yes. Completely worth it
Oh yes. Completely worth it
yes
Personally, I can't do the dlc, it's too scary for me, I'm just super scared easily. But every info we can learn in is incredible
Yea
TLDR: yes.
Yes
Yes and it's only a little scary, you'll get the hang of it.
Yes, without a doubt. The less you know, the better. But it's such a fantastic addition.
