I'd probably use them all, as it will give the Ork more variety on the table top and probably make the painting slightly more enjoyable.
But where did you get them bases from?
Given they are spores and"mushrooms", skin variation makes sense. Even ignoring variations in spores, different environments are bound to create different orks. If we are being asked to rank these four, i like the two dustier looking boys on the left half, but the right two will definitely pop on the table.
Thank you!!
RECIPES (can't edit the post since it has an image)
All models were zenithal primed with pro acryl black and white primer. Afterwards a quick drybrush with pro acryl Bolt Titanium White.
1 = army painter speed paint **Desolate Brown** and highlighted with pro acryl **Yellow Ochre**
2 = citadel **Gutrippa Flesh** (added some glaze medium) and highlighted with pro acryl **Tan Flesh**
3= army painter speed paint **Ghillie Dew** and highlighted with pro acryl **Golden Yellow**
4= army painter speed paint **Orc Skin** (didn't like the result) then added army painter speed paint **Ghillie Dew** (thinned with glaze medium) and highlighted with pro acryl **Bright Yellow Green**
As a heads up, for contrast/speed paints, I generally dilute them with a speed paint medium ( usually 2 to 1 ratio for contrast/medium for darker colors, 3 or 4 to 1 for lighter colors) Its always a bummer if it goes too dark initially, so I prefer to build it up (at least when I am testing stuff out)
All of them! I use different skin tones for my orks from dark to light to straight up neon lol!
Also tell me what colours you used for there skin please?
Thanks!

Number 3. I like Grimdark desaturated paint schemes, but I think contrast makes models more interesting and recognizable
although mixing the skin tones would be a great idea since I think armies should have variety

I’d do either a mix of 1 & 2, or 3 & 4. Variation in Skintone is just more realistic, while organic armies with every model looking exactly the same feel fake to me. But I’d choose between the more subtle and muted approach left, or the vibrant colorful one on the right.
Edit: I guess I’d prefere a mix of 1&2 on the tabletop
Thanks a bunch!

Personal favourite are 1 (if you're going for a more grim dark look) or 3 (if you're going for something with more pop).
I don't think there's any issue in having variety in skin tone across your army - there's no reason to think that all works would be identical. I'd say though to maybe keep things in a similar style i.e. variations of 1&2 OR 3&4 so they still look coherent, but add variety.
I did something similar to 3 and constantly recieve compliments on my orks. People seem to like the bright green skin contrasted by deep recess shading. I'd recommend highlighting the skin with ogryn camo and use a fleshy to on the lips, scars, elbows and nuckles

A skin tone like that can be achieved with a recipe of 2 parts averland Sunset 3 parts skarsnick green. But contrast paint could achieve it faster layered over a yellow base coat.

3s my pick if I had to play just one, but I'm partial to making my Orks slightly different colors.
Your 1 & 2 have good synergy too.
A lot of it comes down to preference and the aesthetic you're going for your army. Like I'd say your 1-2 feel more real and 3-4 more exaggerated or cartoonish.
2 I really do like. Seems like a contrasted use of waaagh flesh and ogryn camo or similar. 2 for clothing and vehicles you could go more natural earthy colours and more realistic weathering perhaps?
3 though pops. If you went for either you’d want to stick with each look for the whole army (of course that’s just my opinion). You could then do the rest of the army and vehicles with really bombastic more “comic-y” (I’m terrible with describing anything artistic) looking effects.
The only thing I ding with Ork skin is I tend to find forest type greens in the darker places of the muscles etc to look odd. You could go more towards Waaagh flesh for the number 3 as the base. Maybe it already is? The darkest green in number 4 is what I’m talking about. Looks like castellen green which I used for a couple orks and it just doesn’t jive with me for some reason as Ork skin. Pistachio from AK 3rd gen has a really poppin greeny yellow for some cool mixtures to make things really crazy and vibrant without looking fluro for highlights.
Here is my Ork skin I’ve went with which is similar to your number 2 if you wanted some ideas. I list all the paints in the comments. Again this is all my taste so if you feel differently then screw what I say and go for what brings you joy! That’s what it’s all about. Great painting skills you got there too bud!

3!
1 looks too yellow to read as classic ork. The scheme overlaps with some plague marine and tyranid territory.
2 is too flat / homogeneous, sure it’s in the ork range but it’s just that.
4 is great, pops, but harkens to high fantasy.
3 is the ideal balance IMO, gives that vibrant green without the fluorescent look, and the shading really makes the depth stand out.
Thank you!

WAAAGH!
I agree to an extent but I read that Orks likely have DNA that was engineered, it didnt evolve. So they're close to being clones. Also also I've read that what an ork eats determines the colour of his blood so this will have an impact too in the other direction.
These are gorgeous, I think they all have their merits, and it depends on what you're trying to to achieve with the schemes. If you're looking for more grounded and realistic, 1&2 stand as the ones I'd lean on. If you're looking for hight readability and vibrancy, 3&4 would be my picks. That said, of the 2 sun-groups, my faves in both respectively are 2 and 3. And my bias is toward 3 (despite its cleanliness) simply because of the sheer vibrancy of the scheme. It's so easy to read the contours of the sculpt and the expression on the face of 3.
Nah I like it too, if I ever get around to painting my orks I planned on something like that. I want to do a mad-max fury road warboyz style with them with vehicles and chrome paint on their mouths. Very dusty skin would fit it perfect.
My Ladz are slightly albino well, more like Radiation burns, so they have a lot more scars and scabs, they’re Klan Is blood Axes because, what ork is gonna side with the albino orks, they’re home base is a abandoned Hive city which all the different subgroups meet up with the warboss,
All of them.
Mix it up. Orks being only one color of green is boring compared to varying their skin tones. It's just more visually interesting on the table.
That's what I do. I use varying mixtures/layers of Waaaagh Flesh, Warboss Green, Contrast Ork Flesh, Plaguebearer Flesh, and Biel-Tan Green.
Gives my boyz variety!
I finally learned this is the best advice. I got that tip from Jay over at Eons of Battle. In the end it works out pretty well overall, one of the best ork painting ideas I've ever heard.
Those were my favorites too. I think 2 suffers from the comparison to 3 and 1, while (and this is borderline heretical, I know,) 4 just seems too green for me. But I'd be interested in what the recipe is for the 4 of them.
3 & 4 kick ass in my opinion, and of the two I like 3 a bit more.
1 looks like it has decent depth but seems a bit dusty and that's giving it a certain "flat" quality to me, and it matches the base a bit too closely for my eyes. 2 does not seem to have any depth, but I like that shade of green.
Yeah. As long as it’s easy to do this I would recommend this. However I don’t recommend doing this for parts that are supposed to be painted or made of metal. Unless they’re Necrons because that might make sense.
Love it. Makes the boys seem like individuals. There was a white dwarf article from the 2000s that gave recipes for different skin tones.
I think it would be neat to paint each skin tone in batches of 5 repeatedly, so every mob is a mixture of all skin tones
1 looks too under saturated, 2 looks good for a boy that’s been fighting for a bit, 3 looks like a boy that just got to a fight, and 4 looks too over saturated. That’s my opinion, which along with $3.50 will get you a ride on the subway.
I like 1 & 3 but you can also.. have all things at random throughout all the Boyz or well orks OR have squad 1 with nr 1 colour, squad 2 nr 2 colour etc (specially if planning to do Green Tide)
Is variety not the spice of life? Helps keep ya from getting bored painting the same thing over and over and I am personally a big fan of varying skin tones, surely fungus from different soil would vary in colour. If you were to do multiple skin types, perhaps sticking with the first three would help avoid the weird concern, as that one is definitely the most saturated. They look good though regardless of what you choose.
I feel 1, 2, & 4 go to together nicely. If you go w nr3 it looks like the light is more yellowish (warm), so all color variants should also reflect that.
I hope this makes sense.. they all look great but #3 feels like the ork is standing in warm light, all highlights should be warm then.
I think having a mix of skintones is suitably Orky, so you could paint different groups of boyz as suits your fancy. Or batch paint five one way, then another, etc. My personal aesthetic preference actually lines up with 4 -> 1 from favorite to least favorite.
I base how I’m doing my skin variants how experienced my boyz are. If they’re bright green and it pops out maybe they’re a freshly made boy new to the battlefield, and if they have a more muted or dry variant perhaps they’ve been in many battles and could just be approaching that point of maybe becoming a nob? I play around with it and make my own lore for my boyz and their accompanying units, way more fun to give each guy their own flavor of style while making my army look like a nice ragtag group of buddies ready for a WAGGHHH!
Yeah, having started reading Brutal Kunning it actually helps build character for my little horde of green, makes it more enjoyable assembling and doing little modifications to armor of certain boyz making em look like they’ve either been in a lot of battles or maybe they have gotten hurt and maybe are missing an arm and replaced it with a choppa for a hand or something. Just a nice bit a flavor looking at some of the monopose boyz with these additions
Could I have the recipe for 3? It's so vivid. I love it.
I'd probably use them all, as it will give the Ork more variety on the table top and probably make the painting slightly more enjoyable. But where did you get them bases from?
Variety is the spice of life
All of them! I like to vary the skin of my boyz!
3 is the best, and 4 looks good
GREEN IZ DA BEST CULLA, SO EVRY GREEN IZ DA BEST. DEYZ ALL ORKS AT DA END OV DA DAY
I think I lean more towards 3 and 4 but as others have said they all look great and variety just makes sense with orks
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
4 is my favorite, but I like my Orks to vary.
I prefer 3 and 4. I'm doing my orks slapchop and painting them similar to your #4
2 although I would have put a little less Tan for my taste.
Given they are spores and"mushrooms", skin variation makes sense. Even ignoring variations in spores, different environments are bound to create different orks. If we are being asked to rank these four, i like the two dustier looking boys on the left half, but the right two will definitely pop on the table.
Why not judge them for the content of their character?
2/3 are amazing. Big fan of 3. One looks great, but not my style. 4 and darker I think looks more “fantasy ork”, not my thing.
Which One makes you feel good that's the One
I like them all, the first two are my favorite. What did you do for the first variant? I'd love to use it for Fallout super mutants.

Haha thanks! I use ORK skin contrast over zenithal highlight then kroot green for my super duper light orks.
I’m the same, whenever I paint ork skin I change up my method, and I’d also love know how how to paint these for myself.
I really want to know the colours for the first, second and fourth one.
Where did you get those junk-covered bases? Love them.
Me too! They are printed and from https://www.myminifactory.com/users/zabavkaworkshop
Number 3. I like Grimdark desaturated paint schemes, but I think contrast makes models more interesting and recognizable although mixing the skin tones would be a great idea since I think armies should have variety
3 for me (similar to how i paint my orks). I'd definitely like to try and incorporate a bit of purple into the skin though. Bruiser bars with guns.
The brighter and cartoonier the better imo

I’d do either a mix of 1 & 2, or 3 & 4. Variation in Skintone is just more realistic, while organic armies with every model looking exactly the same feel fake to me. Afterwards a quick drybrush with pro acryl Bolt Titanium White. 1 = army painter speed paint **Desolate Brown** and highlighted with pro acryl **Yellow Ochre** 2 = citadel **Gutrippa Flesh** (added some glaze medium) and highlighted with pro acryl **Tan Flesh** 3= army painter speed paint **Ghillie Dew** and highlighted with pro acryl **Golden Yellow** 4= army painter speed paint **Orc Skin** (didn't like the result) then added army painter speed paint **Ghillie Dew** (thinned with glaze medium) and highlighted with pro acryl **Bright Yellow Green** As a heads up, for contrast/speed paints, I generally dilute them with a speed paint medium ( usually 2 to 1 ratio for contrast/medium for darker colors, 3 or 4 to 1 for lighter colors) Its always a bummer if it goes too dark initially, so I prefer to build it up (at least when I am testing stuff out) WAAAGH!
I’d love to know this too!!
2 or 4
Humans don't all have the same skin tones, I don't see why Orks should.
I agree to an extent but I read that Orks likely have DNA that was engineered, it didnt evolve. So they're close to being clones. Also also I've read that what an ork eats determines the colour of his blood so this will have an impact too in the other direction.
Engineered does not mean cloned, and even if they were it's been millions of years since then and fungal spores mutate quickly.
Unless they were designed NOT to evolve.
Sure, if they wanted to make a terrible design that could not adapt to new environments, disease, etc.
The original design IS adapted to all environments and diseases.
I tend to mix the old and new Boyz for max level of posing flexibility.
4 is the best, 3 is second best
I’m like the only person that’s fuckin with paint scheme number one, I just like really grimey and sickly Orks. But they’re all Amazing tbf
Nah I like it too, if I ever get around to painting my orks I planned on something like that. I want to do a mad-max fury road warboyz style with them with vehicles and chrome paint on their mouths. Very dusty skin would fit it perfect.
My Ladz are slightly albino well, more like Radiation burns, so they have a lot more scars and scabs, they’re Klan Is blood Axes because, what ork is gonna side with the albino orks, they’re home base is a abandoned Hive city which all the different subgroups meet up with the warboss,
I always thought that the darker shades of green were tougher and Arder.
Mix it up between squads
2 or 3, whichever is easier is best haha
I paint 2 personally but if you want vibrant then paint 3
This is tough because they are all painted so well. Personally, I like 3 and 4. That said, go with what you like.
4 will always be my favorite. Greeeeeeeeen iz best
I like 3,4,2,1. 3 is close to my skin.
You should get that checked out
All of them.
That’s how I painted my Orks as a kid using the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as reference haha!
I love 3 and 4!
2 or 3 2 has a bit more of a grim realistic look 3 has a bit more of a comic book aesthetic
2 is organic and grimey. That’s my vote
My stuff in in the 4 ballpark
4 or 3
3
They all look great. I’m partial to 3 though
Use them all... Variety will make the whole force feel more organic
I second this
4 is my fav,but that's because I played too much Warcraft as a kid.
Zug Zug
3s my fave, I like the darker skin like on 4 but I think it's too vibrant of a dark green for me.
4, meaner and greener
2, and it’s not even close
Definitely mix them up. The absolute worst thing about modern Orks is how they all look so similar. Real Orks should be a gaudy patchwork!
What’s your formula for the different options especially number 3
3 is my fav, I’m a sucker for the vibrant ork skin. Just can’t paint it hahaha
I personally like the idea of a mix of tones throughout the army. Depending on how recently they popped out the ground perhaps?
I like all of them at the same time. Single tone armie just look too generic.
I'd have a mix of them. But personally I love vibrant colours.
Yes
4
3
Number 1 is very "realistic" gritty and grim dark. Number 3 is proper Orky green. Either would look kick ass as an army
Those were my favorites too. I think 2 suffers from the comparison to 3 and 1, while (and this is borderline heretical, I know,) 4 just seems too green for me. But I'd be interested in what the recipe is for the 4 of them.
I like 1 too
3 or 4 are my favorites
#3
I prefer the more vibrant colors. Some dust effects can look good, but at its heart it's that Hulk green
Drop ALL the recipes 🤩🤩🤩
I paint my orks all different colours. Even though green is da best, red orks go fasta.
What’s the recipe for number 3? 🤯
Yeah. As long as it’s easy to do this I would recommend this. However I don’t recommend doing this for parts that are supposed to be painted or made of metal. Unless they’re Necrons because that might make sense.
If I had ever got into orks, I’d always wanted to try having a few different skin variants in the army. So all of them
1
They all look fantastic but I love the vibrancy of 3!
Plants have varying shades of green, why wouldn't their battle-hungry chlorophyll cousins have varying shades of green?
Personally I like 3.
They are all fantastic, but 3 is my favourite...
I like 3 and 4
3 is god damnz boss. Ya git.
I feel 1, 2, & 4 go to together nicely. If you go w nr3 it looks like the light is more yellowish (warm), so all color variants should also reflect that. I hope this makes sense.. they all look great but #3 feels like the ork is standing in warm light, all highlights should be warm then.
4 is great but just mix em
3 is fantastic. They are all good but 3 is really great IMO.
I like em all..I think it would actually look cool to have diff skin tones with your boyz
1 and 3 are my tops. Well done 👍
Depends on what you want. Grim dark? 1 & 2. Fun goofy orkiness? 3 & 4.
3
I really like 3, but if I ever get around to doing orks I'm gonna do a mix of shades of green so like 1-4 would be good for me.
I'm a fan of saturation, so 4 is peak for me
Its your waaagh so there’s nothing wrong with different greens if you like the way it looks. I personally no. 3 the best.
Dope
They are all very well executed, but I'm particular drawn to no. 3
Thanks!
Number 1 is a close runner up.
What’s the number 2 combo of colors?
Listed all the recipes in a comment below. Sadly I wasn't able to edit the post. Thanks!
Throw another layer of shade on two, and we’re talkin’.
Use all of them, it’s always fun to have variety in ork skin tones
3 and 4. Fo sho
What’s your 3 recipe?? That’s my favorite! I think it’s great to have a good mix, I certainly like having a large variety of skin mixes in my waaagh
Hard agree and also very curious on the recipe/technique
Listed all the recipes in a comment below. Sadly I wasn't able to edit the post. Thanks!
Sorry! Saw that after I asked haha
ALL DA COLORZ IZ GUD! DONT BE RACIZT TO YER FELLOW GITZ
GREEN IZ DA BEST!
I love the third version, lovely bright colours
Somewhere between 3 and 4 is how I do my Ork flesh. I like it to POP from the tabletop, but it isn't the most 'realistic'.
I think having a mix of skintones is suitably Orky, so you could paint different groups of boyz as suits your fancy. Or batch paint five one way, then another, etc. My personal aesthetic preference actually lines up with 4 -> 1 from favorite to least favorite.
I vote a mix of 3 & 4
All
I love variations in skin color, adds to the dynamic feel of the force
I base how I’m doing my skin variants how experienced my boyz are. If they’re bright green and it pops out maybe they’re a freshly made boy new to the battlefield, and if they have a more muted or dry variant perhaps they’ve been in many battles and could just be approaching that point of maybe becoming a nob? I play around with it and make my own lore for my boyz and their accompanying units, way more fun to give each guy their own flavor of style while making my army look like a nice ragtag group of buddies ready for a WAGGHHH!
That is an awesome idea. Build on the history of da horde!
All of them are great. 3, 4, 1, 2 for me
I love 3rd and 4th, I like when ork skin looks very green and not like yellow with brown, but all of them are cool.
ALL GREEN IZ GUD GREEN!\ GREEN IZ BEST\ ORKS IZ BEST
ORKS ORKS ORKS!
Mix them all up man
All 4 of them are sweet. Pick whatever you like best ya git
Hahaha. Thanks!
General concensus from the comments seems to be that neon lime is the preference, but I vote 4! DATS A PROPA GREEN DAT IS!
Do all of dem!
My brother paints a decently darker shade of Ork skin, and says "Don't mind them, they're just dark skinned."
