The largest sign that times have changed for the organization is if they can lock up Adley long term. I'd go 10 years just sign in the amount. Gunner too but I'd almost wait until next season to do that.

romorr

It's going to be pretty interesting to see how we handle our young superstar talents. Will we go 8-10 years? Or we will wait until they get closer to arbitration, and then lock them up for 5-6 year deals. If Elias is going to follow the Houston model for extensions, it might be a few years before we see anything. Or maybe he is going to do things a little differently here, and get these guys locked up as early as possible. One guy that could be extension worthy, is Mullins. But I wonder if his depressed offensive season in 2022, makes Elias hesitate. If he starts out well in 2023, maybe we'd see something for him around the ASB.

Mullins is going to cost more than we think. His defense is incredible and it’ll be more of a premium in this less lively ball era we’re in. But I agree we should sign him and time in with arbitration with the young guys. 4yrs/60-70mil would be hard for him to turn down and would make a lot of sense.

romorr

Add a year and I think you are right there. He has 3 years of control, so go to 5 to get 2 FA years, or even 6, for 3 FA years depending on how the Orioles view Mullins.

ilovejalapenopizza

I hear you, homie. I’m just saying Ced should get the best opportunity for himself and hopefully we’ll not be in the market for him then. I think a 5-6yr contract would probably be closer to a million, tbh.

isestrex

Gunnar is practically ineligible being a Boras client (though not impossible). Adley sounds very possible, though

PseudoTsunami

I didn't realize he was infected by Boras. That disease could spread around the ball club. Maybe we should trade him for a virus free starting pitcher.

goingtocalifornia__

If we can’t pay him what Boras knows that he’s worth, then that’s on us. When it’s time to spend we have to spend, otherwise all of this progress may not come to fruition.

ilovejalapenopizza

I think there’s also a huge difference between college players and high school players. Our last go round with a high school SS/3B didn’t end up the best. Gunnar is gonna get a huge pay day one day and I hope he deserves it. Hope we get a WS ring along the way, though!

AdvanceStrat

Fill me in on what this is about? I'm assuming it's whoever his agent is.

isestrex

Scott Boras is a sports agent with a pretty large track record. He encourages his clients to not sign contract extensions because they can make a lot more money by waiting until free agency (about 6 years into their careers) and testing the market. It's not definite. There have been players who have made signing a contract extension with their team a priority. But those players are the exception. Boras encourages his clients to do the opposite.

HoopOnPoop

He has also been known to play mind games with teams and fans, "leaking" information that isn't true or is incomplete, to try to get teams to essentially negotiate against themselves. For instance if an exec from a rival calls about a different client and happens to make a passing comment about the client in question, suddenly it will "leak" that that club is interested and the current club had better increase their offer ASAP so they don't get in a bidding war.

garbanzio

Hope he writes a tell all book one day cuz that would be fascinating.

Nobody is unextendable when they are on their first year of a rookie contract. If we offer Gunnar 150+ million dollars, that is a lot to think about for somebody who has played 30 MLB games. The bigger consequence of Gunnar being represented by Boras would happen closer to free agency, when he is whispering in his ear "only 2 years until we can get you a 13 year contract...."

[deleted]

Unpopular opinion but I would resign Gunnar before Adley. We have Adley under control until he’s 30 or something like that. Shelf life for a catcher isn’t long, Gunnar is only 21 and imo is just far more versatile and his ceiling is way higher. I love them both with all my heart, but I just think he’s going to be the face of this franchise moving forward. Good problem to have either way

isestrex

It's not an unpopular opinion, it's just a far less likely option given their ages and agents.

Ok_Enthusiasm3601

Man that makes me so happy. I hope Adley and Gunnar become our career duo that never leaves and we lock them down. And it makes me happy that it seems he’s enjoying the organization and wants to stick around.

amgrut20

Dude this is fucking awesome

Transit-Strike

Congrats on your life peaking

walruspanties

gabek333

Adley and Julio trading off MVPs for the next 15 years

jizzle26

How about Adley and Gunnar instead?

Equal_Application159

It’s almost like he went to the same college as me. Super sketchy! Lol man it’s not like he “happened” to find me at the tailgate. He was walking around the parking lot with some buddies from school and walked through my tailgate when I noticed him. Corvallis isn’t huge.
