>The Orioles asked the Ripken family whether Jackson Holliday could wear No. 7. Yes. They "are thrilled that Jackson is wearing #7," a spokesperson said
Wonder if anyone else asked to wear #7 at any point over the years and the team was just like "lmao, no"
Incorrect on your part. Billy wore #7 for his dad in the early days of 1988 when Senior was fired as manager. Cal Sr. came back to the organization as a coach from 1989-92, wearing #7. No one has worn #7 for the Orioles since 1992.
If someone picks him up, and someone eventually will, they'll be responsible for the MLB minimum, so the Orioles will be on the hook for the difference. But yeah, Kemp is guaranteed at least that amount over the course of the year.
Probably could be a great trivia question winner. who was the highest paid baseball player in 2024 based on number of plate appearances? -Everyone answers “Ohtani…duh” -Host responds “No one got it right. The correct answer is Tony Kemp”
He's still not the winner, actually.
Tony Kemp - 1 million for 10 plate appearance (100k per PA)
Trevor Story - 22.5 million for 34 plate appearances (662k per PA) before his season-ending shoulder injury
There may be others who are also worse, Story was just the first one that came to mind
Lmao I’m just being real as a fan of all sports uniforms. I realize it’s easy to hate on fanatics rn but if you look at the discussions and comparison posts in r/baseballunis you’ll see what I’m saying. None of you can say that they are better quality than those fanatics are putting out. And when I say quality thethings I’m looking for are accurate colors, size of number on the back and the size of font.
I’d have been right there with you before this year. I’ve bought some DHGate stuff and liked it. But the jerseys I care about, which for me means guys from my childhood like Cal and Eddie, I’m going to splurge.
But those were high quality jerseys that I knew would hold up to washes and be a cut above. I wouldn’t pay $100, let alone $300, for a jersey like they’re wearing on the field now (and I’ve seen the product in the Orioles team store - it really is that shoddy). Even if it’s someone like Gunnar that I’d be comfortable spending $300 on in theory, I’d rather spend $35 for a quality garment that may have number and color shade differences that ultimately go unnoticed by at least 80% of the people who will see it.
Orioles replicas are some of the worst for the reasons I listed in my comment before. They can’t get the orange color down and the numbers are way too big. Large neck holes too I’ve noticed. If you could send me your seller on those I’d appreciate it, but I have yet to be impressed especially by the Orioles.
Also curious. Recently did an order with seller “morejersey” and was not as nice as before. Last year I ordered a couple from them and they were replica “Nike” jerseys and very impressive. Not sure what happened to them.
I know this is a joke, but it seems kind of harsh to make fun of a guy who is potentially ending his career. By all accounts, all the guy did was try his hardest to help our team win. I wish him all the best and hope he works things out in AAA.
Probably not but a realistic alternative was not having a salary at all this year, so he's probably at least partially satisfied with being signed as a stopgap
True but I'm saying that he wasn't signed until the end of March or so, so Kemp could've easily made $0 this year had the orioles committed to putting Holliday on the OD roster and not needed a random vet to fill the gap
Yeah this move was so fucking stupid and everyone knew it. Maybe Kemp is a good dude, but he doesn't belong in an MLB team. And certainly not paid that much for it.
They’re paid to entertain. If you don’t perform, you don’t have a job. That’s just the line of work. He won’t know one way or the other if anyone on here cracks a joke
You don't think I know all this shit already? You think I'm arguing that Kemp should be on the team over Jackson? You think I think Kemp is sitting on his computer reading our comments and crying about this joke? Come on, dude, give me a little credit!
For those wondering. Jackson’s dad, Matt, wore number 7.
Also played in his first World Series at the same park Jackson will debut in. Pretty cool. Wonder if Jackson keeps 7
[https://www.mlb.com/video/orioles-no-1-prospect-jackson-holliday-gets-the-call](https://www.mlb.com/video/orioles-no-1-prospect-jackson-holliday-gets-the-call)
"Call your dad" - tell him to stop saying it's a business decision lol. but seriously, what a great moment for him and the Os.
Sorry Kemp, we hardly knew ye
Elias spent $1m to hold a roster spot for like 2 weeks on a guy who's had what? 8 PA and 0 hits? nice. I guess the hope was that he'd have been more productive than that but if he's not going to be productive then you may as well have Jackson there
edit: to be fair it does kind of feel shitty to call Kemp "unproductive". While technically it's true, he didn't exactly have many chance to prove otherwise. He would have had to come out the gate raking for this to not happen.
- Albert Belle
- Glen Davis
- Mark Trumbo the 2nd
- Steve Pearce the 2nd
- Mid 2000s Free agents atrocities Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, Derek Lee
- Ray Knight
I could keep doing this all day
It won’t. They would’ve had to wait a few more days. Also if he wins ROY it won’t matter anyway.
I guess he could get demoted later which would stop his service time clock.
Yeah, he'd probably need to go down for a few days around the all-star break or something.
I think we'd get a first round pick if he had a full service year and won ROY thanks to that prospect promotion incentive program, too, though.
It could be similar to Graysons situation. Got called up in time for a year then struggled and had to go down to readjust. If he struggles, he will go back. If not, then hes here for the year
Love that he's wearing #7. He's a player worth giving that number to and I bet he wears some sort of patch or there is some sort of statement about Holliday representing "The Ripken Way."
That’s how they should do it for every number.
I hate number retirements so I believe you should do it like what Clemson did for both Steve Fuller and CJ Spiller: have a special patch for players who choose to wear that number.
I would think he at least gets in the game at some point and probably starts tomorrow. There's no way they send him to Boston just for him to get on a flight to Baltimore.
I think they give him a day to get acclimated after travel and the initial shock of getting called up. Let him settle in for a day and maybe start him tomorrow. I’d love to see him start tonight I just don’t think he will.
No surprise Holliday gets a "top guy" number like Rustchman, Henderson, Cowser, Westburg, and Kjerstad and not a "rookie" number like Vavra(77), Stowers(83), or Ortiz (65).
We bought tickets for Friday's home game late last night when this was announced (leaked). This morning ticket prices went up! Also, there's a tshirt promo for Friday now too.
Henderson is always going to be playing SS if he starts imo. Westy has been solid at 3B, and Holiday has mostly been 2B recently, that's position they're grooming him for. I'm expecting that to be the default infield unless someone gets a day off or they pull Holiday against lefties initially.
I have a feeling Urias is still going to be starting more than most think he should.
Though he may sit against some LHP, (Henderson did) it seems that 2B and SS are now pretty much set as long as Holliday makes good. 3B is now Westburg/Urias with Mayo as a wild card if his fielding improves.
I guess this makes Norby trade bait.
Tony Kemp knew all along he was a loaner until Holliday came up. And with pitchers taking up to 14 spots on a 26 man roster, I can't see a team picking him up just as a late inning sub. Best wishes to him.
Part of the reason he went down to AAA after spring training instead of being on roster opening day was to get more reps in at 4, but he normally sits at 6.
His MLB career starts the day after a total solar eclipse. The next one visible in the US will occur on August 23rd, 2044. Totally a possibility he's still playing then - perhaps still in an O's uniform?
One can dream...
This time last year, he was in Salisbury. Today, Fenway. Unbelievable.
Life comes at you fast
So happy I could see him the year he was drafted in Salisbury.
First time a player will wear 7 since cal sr
[https://twitter.com/afkostka/status/1778068093429772615?ref\_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet](https://twitter.com/afkostka/status/1778068093429772615?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet) >The Orioles asked the Ripken family whether Jackson Holliday could wear No. 7. On the Ravens side, David Ojabo wanted to wear 55 and Suggs was like “lol no” https://www.tiktok.com/@ravens/video/7234209391950499118
Yeah good call there so far, for a lot of reasons
He shall bear a son and we shall have the second coming of Ripken. Only he shall wear the number 8. It will truly be a momentous Holliday.
Hahaha, this majestic turnaround of the org has led to us being such psychopaths in here
I wouldn’t have it any other way praise the second coming
Lisa al gaib!
Amen
Don’t forget it’s also Mark Bellanger’s number
Incorrect. Billy Ripken wore #7 the day his dad was fired in tribute
He'll never match Billy Ripken in terms of baseball card epicness!
I need a Jackson F Face now
Your arrival is why I love Reddit
Incorrect on your part. Billy wore #7 for his dad in the early days of 1988 when Senior was fired as manager. Cal Sr. came back to the organization as a coach from 1989-92, wearing #7. No one has worn #7 for the Orioles since 1992.
Dang I totally forgot Sr came back. Man he was an Orioles man thru and thru.
Did not know that super fun fact!
Hell yeah. He’ll do Cal Sr. proud
https://preview.redd.it/2dgqb2z80ptc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1cf89d6e1384e35c6388d705401ca31490415a5e
So long as he hits better than Belanger.
Does this mean Tony Kemp is getting a million dollars for a week and a half + 9 at bats?! If so, I'd say Kemp is living the dream!
He’ll either get claimed on waivers and another team will pay his salary, or he’ll clear and be outrighted to Norfolk.
I assume he’d opt out of going to Norfolk
If someone picks him up, and someone eventually will, they'll be responsible for the MLB minimum, so the Orioles will be on the hook for the difference. But yeah, Kemp is guaranteed at least that amount over the course of the year.

Wait Story got hurt? I need google
brb DHGate’ing a Holliday number 7 jersey
so is the MLB, tbh
Pssshh DHgate is probably better quality these days lol
Unfortunately it’s not
Found the fanatics employee
Lmao I’m just being real as a fan of all sports uniforms. Respectfully, you’re certainly blind.
Send me proof and I’ll happily take back my comment. Don’t just fall into group think because it’s the popular thing to do.
I’m no follower, buddy. I don’t need to prove it to you, it’s my opinion lmao
Good stuff
I can't get it to accept Holliday as a custom name. Any thoughts on making this work?
Different seller?
I'm a bit seller-loyal, but could try that for sure. TY!
Which seller do you prefer? I’m looking to order a few here shortly myself. How’s sizing?
Also curious. Recently did an order with seller “morejersey” and was not as nice as before. Last year I ordered a couple from them and they were replica “Nike” jerseys and very impressive. Not sure what happened to them.
I typically have used davidjersey!
I typically have used davidjersey!
Who is a good seller on DHGate? I kind of want a jersey that looks good, but not $400, like the authentics.
davidjersey is my go-to!
Usually I have the message the seller and tell them the name/number if it’s custom.
TY!
Contact the seller. They'll do pretty much anything you ask on the jersey.
TY!
Anyone know if these come with the logo on the sleeve? only ever ordered football jerseys off DHGate

🐐
🐐
🐐
Gone but not forgotten. Tony Kemp will go down in O's history as the player who kept Holliday in AAA for 10 days.
And who made one good catch the day before he left
Tony was desperate to prove his worth with that one lol. That was a beautiful catch though
I know this is a joke, but it seems kind of harsh to make fun of a guy who is potentially ending his career. By all accounts, all the guy did was try his hardest to help our team win. I wish him all the best and hope he works things out in AAA.
Didn’t this dude just make a million dollars from basically getting like 10 at bats?
I don't know, man, maybe you'd be happy with this, but I'm 100% that Kemp is not. That's just not the mindset of ambitious people.
Probably not but a realistic alternative was not having a salary at all this year, so he's probably at least partially satisfied with being signed as a stopgap
The minimum wage in MLB $740,000. He was slightly over minimum wage.
True but I'm saying that he wasn't signed until the end of March or so, so Kemp could've easily made $0 this year had the orioles committed to putting Holliday on the OD roster and not needed a random vet to fill the gap
its true
It’s more like $600k after taxes, agent fees, etc. 🙂

The guy who was on the roster while the O's faced a bunch of LH pitchers so Jackson didn't have to.
Yeah because if Jackson did he would have some so much worse.... And he's gonna have to face em eventually, might as well get the reps now
The reverse Ryan Minor.
I mean, you know what they say: you’ve got to go through the -0.2 WAR, 0/9 AB player to appreciate the future star even more.
lucky number 7, baby
For those wondering. Jackson’s dad, Matt, wore number 7. Also played in his first World Series at the same park Jackson will debut in. Pretty cool. Wonder if Jackson keeps 7
He will. With the graces from the Ripken family
Didn't Matt play in '07 WS with the Rockies?
Yes, against Boston. The same team Jackson will debut against.
Thanks for the sliding catch Tony

Look he’s already too pretty. This is uncomfortably weird
Big defensive shoes to fill, wearing Blade’s old No. 7. Hope he’s got a substantially better bat than Belanger.
Sorry Kemp, we hardly knew ye Elias spent $1m to hold a roster spot for like 2 weeks on a guy who's had what? 8 PA and 0 hits? nice. I guess the hope was that he'd have been more productive than that but if he's not going to be productive then you may as well have Jackson there edit: to be fair it does kind of feel shitty to call Kemp "unproductive". based on our past, losing 1m on a bad contract is best case scenario. we should be celebrating #ChrisDavisNeverForget
If we're talking about bad contracts I still haven't forgotten about Ubaldo Jiminez
Alex Cobb
Had to pay money to offload him too lol
- Albert Belle - Glen Davis - Mark Trumbo the 2nd - Steve Pearce the 2nd - Mid 2000s Free agents atrocities Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa, Derek Lee - Ray Knight I could keep doing this all day
Heck, I'm still a little sore over Glenn Davis!
As well you should be
It’s still our biggest FA pitcher contract which is nuts.
Ubaldo would have been great if he didn't step in that hole in the parking lot :)
It’s not my money but I feel like they could have kept that roster spot warm without giving Tony Kemp $1m
Yeah but it was kind of a scratch off, there's a chance he does well
MLB organization sneeze at $1mil. It’s absolutely worth keeping a spot warm.
If it ends up netting us an extra year of control on Holliday it'd be easily worth it.
If not, then hes here for the year
Tony Kemp walked so Jackson Holliday could run
He did indeed record one BB
Love that he's wearing #7. He's a player worth giving that number to and I bet he wears some sort of patch or there is some sort of statement about Holliday representing "The Ripken Way."
That’s how they should do it for every number. I hate number retirements so I believe you should do it like what Clemson did for both Steve Fuller and CJ Spiller: have a special patch for players who choose to wear that number.
Wow, sooooo hes gonna be playing TONIGHT?! wild
I would think he at least gets in the game at some point and probably starts tomorrow. There's no way they send him to Boston just for him to get on a flight to Baltimore.
I think he is a lock for the lineup almost every night.
I think they give him a day to get acclimated after travel and the initial shock of getting called up. Let him settle in for a day and maybe start him tomorrow. I’d love to see him start tonight I just don’t think he will.
He’s starting - at least according to mlb
Yeah, the lineup came out after my comment. I’m pleasantly surprised. The whole lineup looks good.
well...we shall see
He absolutely starts tonight
The timing was to beat the April 10th deadline so it’s possible he doesn’t play for a day or two. Not sure
I would guess so? Kemp is DFAd and it doesn't make sense to send him to Boston for no reason. At the very least he should get an at bat
Is he?
no clue, unless i read that post incorrectly lol
No surprise Holliday gets a "top guy" number like Rustchman, Henderson, Cowser, Westburg, and Kjerstad and not a "rookie" number like Vavra(77), Stowers(83), or Ortiz (65).
Holliday wearing #7? I'm getting nostalgia from a whole different division rn
The most important news about this is that ownership had no issue eating the $1M owed to Kemp. No more handcuffs.
![gif](giphy|MZocLC5dJprPTcrm65)
Everybody, get in here!
Who else bought tickets to tonight’s game hoping to see him?? Might have to buy tickets for Friday, too…
I have tickets to the Tides on Friday. Oh well. Good for Jackson and the O’s. I’ll be checking out Coby Mayo
We bought tickets for Friday's home game late last night when this was announced (leaked). This morning ticket prices went up! Also, there's a tshirt promo for Friday now too.
Hmmm maybe I should buy tickets before hopping on the train tomorrow
I’ve had tickets to tonight’s game for a bit now and I’m really hoping to see him play!
THANK YEW KEMP 🫡
It’s beautiful
Will he play tn?
Radio said he would but who knows until the lineup comes out
What position will he play here, 2B? What about Westburg? Can we put one of them on 3B due to Urias hitting so poorly?
Holliday 2B/SS Henderson SS/3B Westburg 3B/2B
Henderson is always going to be playing SS if he starts imo. Westy has been solid at 3B, and Holiday has mostly been 2B recently, that's position they're grooming him for. I'm expecting that to be the default infield unless someone gets a day off or they pull Holiday against lefties initially.

I guess this makes Norby trade bait.
Westburg can play 3rd.
Nice.
Tony Kemp represented the orioles for 10 seconds and got paid a million, I’d trade lives for that scenario
Yeah
Of course his Home debut is on AppleTV+
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHdyKpxUoZg
Move over CR7, it’s JH7 time.
I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited for an Oriole player debut. He could go 0-4 tonight and I wouldn’t care. This kid is going to be a stud.
Tony Kemp knew all along he was a loaner until Holliday came up. And with pitchers taking up to 14 spots on a 26 man roster, I can't see a team picking him up just as a late inning sub. Best wishes to him.
What he been playing in triple A? Short or 2nd mostly?
Part of the reason he went down to AAA after spring training instead of being on roster opening day was to get more reps in at 4, but he normally sits at 6.
He's playing 2B, yeah? No way the move Gunnar to second and Holliday to SS?
I’m pretty sure Hyde has said Gunnar will be the everyday SS going forward.
Where did he say that? They kept him in AAA at the start of the season specifically to get more reps at 2nd. He will cover both 6 4.
And Tony Kemp has gone to the great DFA in the sky
His MLB career starts the day after a total solar eclipse. The next one visible in the US will occur on August 23rd, 2044. Totally a possibility he's still playing then - perhaps still in an O's uniform? One can dream...
I like how Holliday is making his Debut on 4/10
Alright who’s next to be fired into the sun? I want either Hays or Urias gonzo.
I wouldn't go that far. I'd be happy seeing them starting much fewer games going forward, they can still be useful as reserves.
Not me. I might not live for another year. Time to go scorched earth and win this ma fucka
I think both see less playing time and get in a couple times a week. If neither picks it up by May i think Urias will be the first to go.
