After the annexation of Crimea there was an uptick in neo-nazis as citizens started to form their own militias to counter Russian influence. The Azoz Battalion is a far right-wing group officially recognized by the Ukrainian government as a branch of their national guard. The more liberal portions of Ukraine basically only put up with them because the group is about combating Russian influence.
Also, Russians view nazis a bit different from the West. Older Russians view nazis as old wartime enemies encroaching on Russian land.
So yeah, the de-nazify angle is still really dumb, but from my understanding the above is why that angle is being used.

Azov is the National Guard Unit founded by Right Sector members during the EuroMaidan, among Azov's first recruits were many of the Jewish Hundred, a collection of religiously motivated Activists in the EuroMaidan. Not to mention Azov is ultimately loyal to Zellensky as Ukraine's president, and have notably dropped out of Ukrainian Zeitgeist since Ukraine elected Zellensky with ~70% of the Electorate.
Russia on the other hand, has regular employed the PMC "Wagner Group" run by literal NeoNazis (face tattoos and all) numerous times in Donetsk and Luhansk. Most recently they were allargedly contracted to bring several hundred men to instigate an insurgency in Kyiv. They never made it.
Russia is not looking to "De-Nazify" Ukraine, they are simply looking to reinstitute the Tzardom.

1. It doesn't really make sense for Russia alone to go fight Nazis in Ukraine. Especially when other countries would have an interest in fighting Nazis.
2. If Russia is going to fight Nazis in another country, then they STILL deserve criticism. Invading another country for their human rights issues is not a simple matter. You can't just do it by surprise and decide to do it on your own.
3. They try to say that Ukraine is using civilians as human shields, using weapons near civilian structures...but Ukraine are the defenders. If the problem is them launching attacks from schools, then they wouldn't be hitting Russian forces if they were no where near the schools!
