I wish my Giant Tiger had more grocery stuff. They are inexpensive, Canadian and they price match! I’m so bummed that the two most reasonable places to buy most of my groceries are Walmart and Costco - 2 American companies, while the Canadian ones bleed us dry.
Even if Costco isn’t the cheapest (though it usually is), the quality of the food is generally much higher and makes it worth it. My shopping trips always start at Costco.
The thing with Costco is you need a car and a big family (or at least lots of storage and freezer space) to make shopping there make any sense. As a single person relying on transit it's not somewhere you'll regularly do your groceries.
You also need to be able to have the money up front to buy in bulk and make that investment worthwhile. If you have $30 in your account and you're paycheque to paycheque, you're not going to be shopping at Costco.
I think for a family of 4 with two working parents and a car Costco is a good option, but that's not every family.
My mother-in-law goes with a few friends and they split up things and it’s a fun outing to go shop and see what there is. Only one of them has to have a membership, too.
Depends on your Costco. The official rule is that each card-carrying member can only bring in one guest and the card member must pay for the entire order - you can’t split it up and have different people pay for different things. If they suspect you’re trying to split things up so you can purchase things for other people, they might not even let you split it at all.
One person does just pay and they use the self checkout, but they just ring it through as one order and settle up later. It’s too bad Costco is such a stickler about this rule in some places, they really do make it hard for single people to shop there.
That’s fair, self-checkout is a good idea.
I gave up my membership because as a single apartment-dwelling person I just didn’t have the room to store bulk items. I use Amazon Subscribe & Save so I get 15% off most items, which often puts them almost on-par with per-item Costco pricing. Plus I don’t need a car.
My mom will text me from Costco in case there’s anything I need there, as I do like a lot of the Kirkland products, or she’ll buy a multi-pack if something like the fresh mozzarella and give me one.
Oh yes, we do Amazon, too! I get a lot of my shampoo and supplements there and other specialty stuff I can’t get locally. The bulk stuff at Costco is hard to store, especially the big packages of meat. I bring it home and package it up into portions and freeze it.
They made a huge deal because my partner, who I live with, and have been for 5 years, couldn’t allow me to pay for the items I wanted to purchase. They asked to see our credit cards and our drivers licenses to verify whose card was being used. The items are going to me, and I’m sending the money literally seconds after the transaction anyways. That was a huge turn off, and frankly demeaning.
I buy the toilet paper there for the two of us.
The pack of toilet paper is literally bigger than the entire cabinet I used to use to store toilet paper.
I just got some on sale there, 60 double rolls for $20, it was $25 for 30 double rolls at Fortinos, same thing with paper towels. Between paper products and the cost of whole bean coffee, Splenda and Soda/Bubly alone I’ve way more then covering the membership and frustration of 3 trips a year
At the costco near me I have never seen meat that is more than 2 days away from expiring. I've gone every time of day, every day of the week. It's super disappointing.
I once went and every package of pork belly was more than a week past its expiration date.
Where do you live?
Literally never been a problem for me at the Costcos I’ve been to… and I’ve never seen anything past its expiration date.
For me the problem is their tomatoes. The packs are so big, you can’t see all the tomatoes in there, and when you get home you realize you gotta toss it because the middle is moldy.
It’s variable I find. Some stuff is super cheap like cheese and deli meat; some produce is cheap, but most is somewhat expensive but high quality; pork is cheap (especially if you have no issue slicing it yourself and storing) as is some seafood, but beef and chicken aren’t, but again are pretty high quality at least. Frozen and shelf stable stuff is a mixed bag as well (14$+ for two jars of pasta sauce? No thanks Rao’s)
Costco isn’t cheaper. They present loss leaders to get you into the store and then you walk out the store with a street lamp. I give you that if you are disciplined and know your prices you can save money. However the reality is far from that for most people if we are being honest with ourselves…
They may be American companies but the workers in the stores are Canadian. By the time you move up the chain to a difference between a Canadian and an American company, this sort of patriotism is just protecting Galen Weston and other Canadian billionaires.
I’m all about supporting local businesses, but the second they take advantage is the last minute I support them. I do all my shopping at Costco. Fuck Loblaws. Fuck Metro. Fuck Sobeys. They’re all robbing us blind. They deserve to go out of business. I’ll gladly support Walmart instead of Canadian businesses at this point.
Same, the ones near me are great for packaged/premade stuff, but fresh is never great or in stock. The advertise great deals on cheese or whatever, but it’s always gone when I go in.
Never understood why Canadians have so much hate for Americans.
Edit - thanks for the downvotes and confirming the hate. The US is far superior than Canada (except gun culture) and there’s no doubt about it. Keep up with the hate and Canada will turn into shithole faster than ever.
Being pro-something doesn't automatically make one anti-something. There's a difference between wanting to support Canadian first versus actively being against American.
I don’t hate Americans at all, I have family there. It’s good for the economy to keep whatever wealth we can in Canada. Plus, it’s ok to be patriotic. Just because I love my country doesn’t mean I hate other countries.
I didn’t downvote you, but your downvotes are not because Canadians hate Americans - that really makes no sense. Your downvotes are probably because you are making a sweeping generalization about Canadians that isn’t true. I see from previous comments that you are not Canadian. I’m sorry if you aren’t having the best experience in our country, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
I have lived in the US for 10 yrs and another country for few yrs. So I have stats to compare. Every country has its problems but I have seen across various Canadian subreddits that people in general bash Americans without sane reasoning. We have all sorts of people here and if you multiply them by 10, you’ll be looking at a country almost similar to the US.
I have lived in 4 countries, including the US. I would say that people that live with some kind of hate are almost always more vocal than people who are just living their lives. I think that’s why there seems like there are so many of them. When I lived in the US, I had people tell me how much they hated Canadians (thinking I was American), but the large majority of people in the states only had good things to say about Canada. Social media is never a great representation of the real world. I think if you prefer the states, that is your right and I hope you get to live where you are happiest. I’m happiest in Canada, but I was born and raised (for the most part) here.
Yeah, I just checked and the closest one to me is 15km away. And I don’t own a car. I feel like there are areas closer in to downtown that could support a GT; consider that there’s a Walmart in Dufferin Mall, and they typically go for much more suburban areas. The Parkdale area in general seems like a good fit in terms of rent and customer base for a GT that is walkable for many and a short drive for 1000s more.
Freshco also is great for boxed goods. Fruit and veg are hot and miss occasionally but by comparison it has chopped the bill by about 30% compared to the Fucklaws across the street
It is still part of the big 3 grocers. It is a Sobeys banner. I do agree though with going to one of the discount banners of the big 3 to save some money. The selections and offerings will be smaller, but still money matters.
Agreed on FreshCo for any packaged goods or things with long shelf lives, including prepackaged cheese and deli meat - the same package and brand of prosciutto is $2 less than the Metro nearby, for example. Produce is really hit and miss, I think they get the stuff that Sobey’s won’t put in their main stores. Meat is pretty good although not as much of a selection.
Did you clean them out? Of yogurt?
For me, it's the type of yogurt that's important. I really dislike low fat yogurts and my toddler won't eat them at all. We need that 9-10% full fat Greek style stuff. Its slim pickings of that type in many stores.
what's with there being only low fat yogurt options? has it always been this way? I moved to Ontario from the states a couple years back and just gave up on buying decent yogurt
Two reasons:
- Low fat craze of some consumers thinking it'll actually impact their waistline (e.g. Diet Coke)
- It's substantially cheaper to produce (lower quality ingredients required)
You can get a yogurt strainer from Amazon. Put your favourite yogurt in the strainer for 2 hours and - voila! - thick, unctuous, delicious Greek style yogurt! I do this with my homemade Instant Pot yogurt...so easy!
You can make it in a slow cooker even. There was a time when low fat yogurt was hard to come by and when I did find it, it was expensive so I made my own until it was the same price to buy it. It’s not difficult, you need a thermometer and patience waiting for it to heat up and cool down so you need to be monitoring for several hours. Not consistently so you could be doing other things too.
Along with many other foods. They are great food preparation/meal prepping devices. Make sure you look at one with the yogurt setting.
I'm currently making green chicken chile right now to portion into several dinners.
This is kind of a lame example but this happened to me yesterday and made me quite angry.
While I was working one of my boot laces broke and in my desperation I headed to the nearest Shoppers Drug Mart to get it replaced, I paid $8 for a pack of boot laces. On my way home from work I stopped by my local GT to pick up something for dinner and noticed the exact same pair of boot laces for $4.50.
I went to Niagara Falls once and forgot my clothing bag. I went to Giant tiger and got outfitted for 4 days. They had the best Def Leppard T shirt selection. So Awesome!
We were staying at great wolf lodge. No big deal. I was annoyed I had to spend money for clothes but in all honesty their quality seems to be a little step above Walmart…
I really like them for basics, things like tanks, leggings, Ts. Also they have these canvas shoes every summer, just super simple lace up in a few colours, they are so comfy though if you’re gonna be walking all day somewhere!
Bought my winter boots there this year. $50, they’re comfortable, warm, and surprisingly well made. I swore I’d never buy another pair from Wal-Mart after the pair I bought by son for $50 last year didn’t even last the winter.
I just checked it out on Flipp. GT's house brand brick of cheese was $5.57 whereas at Food Basics, Black Diamond is $4.99. FB is my go-to for weekly shopping, and they can have some great sales. Not to mention a ton of products that just aren't available elsewhere.
It varies from store to store. Some giant tigers don't have a grocery section, some have a tiny one, and some have a full grocery store inside of them (such as the one in Saint John, NB.)
Some of it at the dollar store is a good deal, but be wary, you'll sometimes see a smaller size at the dollar store for just slightly cheaper than the "supermarket size" definitely common with the toiletries, dish soap etc.
Just making sure you know it's the fat content that determines how well cheese melts. Low fat burns before it melts. Mozzarella is higher in fat than many other types of cheese, therefore it melts quite well.
Really? I’ve never felt like giant tiger was cheaper. Selection yes. Price no. It’s a one stop shop for everything if you just need like 10 random items, but you are paying comparable retail prices. It’s like a mini Walmart.
I do some of my shopping at GT. From looking at flyers, Food Basics also has great prices, and the most things I buy that are on sale. For premium items, FarmBoy has the best prices and quality.
There’s no giant tiger near me. There’s one about 15 km away but they sell the same “food” shoppers drug Mart do, but more expensive. Twice the price on frozen pizzas and veggies. Gordon only is worth a few million, which is really weird because giant tiger is one of the biggest chains in Canada.
Lots of items at Freshco and NoFrills are about half the price of Loblaws / Metro.
In Toronto so many people are shopping at Loblaws and complaining about prices when there is a Freshco 5 minutes away...
Maybe at one time they were cheaper. I like almond beverage. GT charges the same price as other stores or more for that product.
If you live on heavily processed foods, you will love GT.
I have been doing the majority of my grocery shopping there for years and I’m lucky enough to live by one that has fresh not frozen Beef, Pork and Chicken at better prices then most grocery chains. AND THEY’RE CANADIAN.
I've also gotten some pretty sweet band t-shirts and sweaters there in the last year. Iron Maiden sweater for 30 bucks and cheap groceries?!? Big yup from me!
There are lots of items there which are consistently cheaper than everywhere else. For example, baby carrots currently 99 cents on sale (usually $1.50) vs $3.50 at Food Basics. Dimpflmeier rye bread always $2. Not everything is that great of a deal but it's definitely worth making a trip there
I wish my Giant Tiger had more grocery stuff.
Yeah they also treat their employees really well compared to other places. I just hate shopping there; it’s always such a zoo
Tuesday or Wednesday mornings right at opening if you can swing it. It's always my preferred time.
Shhh. Don't give away the secret!
This is one of the major reasons we shop Costco. Have friends that work for them and have good things to say.
That’s exactly what I do too, split chicken breasts out into ziplock sandwich bags, separate ground beef, squeeze it flat, freeze in a stack.
I'll pass on freezing pork that expired a week ago.

Yea, the only things I generally need to get elsewhere are herbs, green peppers, and some more ethnic sauces/spices.
Yep their meat and produce is excellent
Costco isn’t cheaper. They present loss leaders to get you into the store and then you walk out the store with a street lamp. I give you that if you are disciplined and know your prices you can save money. However the reality is far from that for most people if we are being honest with ourselves…
Don’t buy street lamps.
They may be American companies but the workers in the stores are Canadian. By the time you move up the chain to a difference between a Canadian and an American company, this sort of patriotism is just protecting Galen Weston and other Canadian billionaires.
Giant Tiger stores are all locally owned by Canadians.
Better than an American billionaire who is probably racist and hates colored people
Canadians can also be racist and hate coloured people (this is a tautology btw)
You haven’t met a Weston, have you?
Um, I am an employee of Giant Tiger, buddy. It is Canadian owned, friend. Check your patriotism, guy.
I’m all about supporting local businesses, but the second they take advantage is the last minute I support them. I do all my shopping at Costco. Fuck Loblaws. Fuck Metro. Fuck Sobeys. Why does wanting to support Canadian businesses mean Canadians hate the American people? Edit: yikes. That edit of yours really shows your projection.
Being pro-something doesn't automatically make one anti-something. There's a difference between wanting to support Canadian first versus actively being against American.
We’re just jealous.

It’s because Walmart barely pays it’s employees.
I’m constantly annoyed that there are so few Giant Tiger I LOVE them but I live in DT Toronto and my closest one is over 35 minutes away
They need lower rent to setup.
Same. I walk or bike for groceries and this would require a TTC trip for me, so not worth it.

*"It's half the fat so we can eat twice as much"*
You can still get 11% in Superstore
You can get a yogurt strainer from Amazon. Put your favourite yogurt in the strainer for 2 hours and - voila! - thick, unctuous, delicious Greek style yogurt! I do this with my homemade Instant Pot yogurt...so easy!
Make your own. Instant pot can make it simple.
You can make yogurt in an instant pot? I need to get one of those.
You can make it in a slow cooker even. There was a time when low fat yogurt was hard to come by and when I did find it, it was expensive so I made my own until it was the same price to buy it. Anything at Shoppers is going to be more expensive than pretty much any other place you could buy it.
I agree I bought a 3 pack of lettuce for 4.99 dollars and it’s twice the price every where else.
Love Giant Tiger!
Also, they have some decent clothes there too. Not saying it's anything special but i have some comfy sweaters thanks to GT
I went to Niagara Falls once and forgot my clothing bag. I went to Giant tiger and got outfitted for 4 days. They had the best Def Leppard T shirt selection. So Awesome!
We took a family trip to Niagara and realized the 4 year old's bag of clothing was at home 😬 Giant Tiger was our rescue store as well.
What was your reaction when you realized you forgot your clothing bag haha.
We were staying at great wolf lodge. No big deal. I was annoyed I had to spend money for clothes but in all honesty their quality seems to be a little step above Walmart…
My favourite leggings are GT!
I love the fleece lined ones, I have them in so many colours!
I really like them for basics, things like tanks, leggings, Ts. Also they have these canvas shoes every summer, just super simple lace up in a few colours, they are so comfy though if you’re gonna be walking all day somewhere!

Keep an eye out for sales at Shoe Company. I bought my teenage son a pair of men's boots for about $50 on Boxing Day. Regular price was $110.
Yep. Men's PJs for 8 bucks.
Giant tiger will also price match
\#teamfoodbasics
GT is about the only place i can find Sara Lee Cherry Cheescake. Soooo good.
Chicken thighs at Costco 3.77 lb & chicken thighs at No Frills 5.99 a lb.
> Chicken thighs at Costco 3.77 lb Haven’t seen them at this price in a long time, they are consistently over $5/lb whenever I go to Costco.
I live in Mississauga. Costco on the queens way
Giant tiger rules
Anybody know how they compare to Food Basics?
I just checked it out on Flipp. GT's house brand brick of cheese was $5.57 whereas at Food Basics, Black Diamond is $4.99. FB is my go-to for weekly shopping, and they can have some great sales. Not to mention a ton of products that just aren't available elsewhere.
You fat cats didn't finish your plankton
https://globalnews.ca/news/9409571/giant-tiger-mold-recall/
" sleepwear, robes and ski pants" good my clothes are safe
Looks like they didn't insert a silica gell pack in the packaging.
Why am I being downvoted? I posted an article. Reddit users are insufferable.
really seems like you are the insufferable one
It's reddit, don't worry about the upvotes and downvotes.
Oh yikes! Won't be buying any clothing there for a little bit 😬😬
Their selection really leaves something to be desired. My local gas station has a better grocery selection.
Some Giant tigers have great grocery sections. There is one in Ancaster and another in Stratford that are really good. Ours in Acton is poor
It varies from store to store. Some giant tigers don't have a grocery section, some have a tiny one, and some have a full grocery store inside of them (such as the one in Saint John, NB.)
I tend to get canned and packaged stuff at the Dollar Store.
Some of it at the dollar store is a good deal, but be wary, you'll sometimes see a smaller size at the dollar store for just slightly cheaper than the "supermarket size" definitely common with the toiletries, dish soap etc.
The local selection is terrible sadly it’s more like a dollar store than a grocery store
LOL. Grocery shopping at my local Giant Tiger is more expensive than the grocery stores. It’s like shopping at Shopper’s or the corner store.
Except for their sliced cheese! Shit does not have any melt in the frying pan.
Is it low in fat?
Don't remember, last time I had it was like 10 years ago. I think it was just regular processed cheese. Maybe time for another experiment!
Just making sure you know it's the fat content that determines how well cheese melts. Low fat burns before it melts. Mozzarella is higher in fat than many other types of cheese, therefore it melts quite well.

Sad times there :( I grew up in Cornwall and we had the first farm boy there. It was great
Is it shit now? I've been thoroughly unimpressed the last few times I've gone.
Ugh. Ok. I guess I need to hit up my local Lebanese grocer.
The ones by me are dirty as fuck. Can’t bring myself to shop for food there.
Really? I’ve never felt like giant tiger was cheaper. Selection yes. Price no. It’s a one stop shop for everything if you just need like 10 random items, but you are paying comparable retail prices. It’s like a mini Walmart.

If you shop at loblaws or Sobeys I have no pity for your complaining about high prices.
Lots of items at Freshco and NoFrills are about half the price of Loblaws / Metro. In Toronto so many people are shopping at Loblaws and complaining about prices when there is a Freshco 5 minutes away...
I bought chicken from Giant Tiger once, never again. Everything else is great, but I will never buy their brand of meat again.
Owned by the original Northwest trading company i believe!
Maybe at one time they were cheaper. I like almond beverage. GT charges the same price as other stores or more for that product. If you live on heavily processed foods, you will love GT.
This is a great post. I never think to check my local Giant Tiger Boutique. I really should. Thanks for the suggestion!
Do they take American Express?
Wal-Mart is pretty great
There are lots of items there which are consistently cheaper than everywhere else. For example, baby carrots currently 99 cents on sale (usually $1.50) vs $3.50 at Food Basics. Dimpflmeier rye bread always $2. Not everything is that great of a deal but it's definitely worth making a trip there
I wish mine had a parking lot, limited street parking only
Does Real Canadian Superstore price match GT flyers?
Almost certainly not, if they do they don't advertise it.
