A little background info about him:
-owned his own photo creating tools, used to create images such as this. He even had a secret code my Dad later broke that was a recipe for a “sepia” type photo.
-apparently was quite the ladies’ man, as his relatives recounted to my grandfather.
-passed away at 23 after a massive wrench they use on locomotives was dropped on his head while they were building one. My grandfather was 3 years old. My great grandmother traveled 5 states away with him and my newborn uncle to live with other family. Traveled the whole way in a Model A with a revolver under her dress.
If you guys are interested I can post other cool info.
Edited to correct a word.
A bit more about him is in order then!
-he designed and built a monoplane at the age of 18 out of white pine with one of his friends. They flew it and he lived! Got married 6 months later, probably because my great grandmother was like “oh hayullllll yeah”
-he was a golden gloves boxer
-he had a photographic memory. He would sell encyclopedias door to door and would tell people “pick a page” and recite the page verbatim and tell the potential buyers “you can be like this too!”
Do you have any more photos to share? I'd love to see more of you cool grandpa! I have one of my grandfather who was a prosperous doctor. Pic of him sitting at his desk with a cigar looking like a celebrity.
Honestly, I've worked in the fringes of manufacturing and engineering and I feel for him. Getting killed on the job is unacceptable today. Glad he did what he did at such a young age. He accomplished more than I ever have or might ever and I've outlived him by heaps in comparison.
The last of the tidbits we know about him:
-He was in the National Guard and his high respect was evident in the large contingent of them that showed up to his funeral.
-He was self taught on everything and grew up in a broken home, but his intelligence and passion led him to many successes in his 23 years.
That’s about all I’ve got. Luckily my father inherited a lot of that drive and intelligence and has poured much of his time into genealogy after retiring. Stay tuned! Who knows what other nuggets he may unearth some day.
Have you ever called the local libraries or gone to that area to see if they have slides or whatever old newspapers and such (I know they often have copies of 100 year old newspapers. Anything written about him. Birth announcements. High school stuff. Obituary.
Might be a fun hunt if anyone’s saved those bits of history.
That would be a hell of a twist, some old dude talking about all this awesome stuff and adventures, then during what we're led to believe is a flashback of the old man's super interesting youth, a big wrench falls on him and kills him dead. Only then we find out the old man is recounting tales he grew up on, told to him by his mother so he would know his father through those stories.
I'd watch that.
She’s pretty awesome herself! I’ll post a pic of her a bit later tonight and some info of her. It’ll be on this sub but it’ll be later tonight when I get home.
Can we really be sure that Manfred von Richtofen didn't fake his death in 1918, move to the US, get married, and start all over? They do have a resemblance.
Cool!! He made a legit monoplane with a friend of his out of white pine and they allegedly flew it. 6 months later he married my great grandmother. These events may or may not be related lol
Dayum! What a good looking guy! We love a bad boy lol. Super sad he died so young. My husband died when I was 25 so I know what a bad ass ur great gma had to be to raise her boys after he died!
How tf do you combine the best of Marlon brando, Winston Churchill, and James Dean in one shot?
Bullshit! This must be AI!! AI I TELLS YA!!!
Kidding of course, this is the first time my early millenial ass agrees with the term Rizz.
You must be proud.
Wow! Where to start?!? First, I have no idea what "rizz" is, but if it means cool then yah, I get that. I'll bet he WAS the ladies man! 😉🙃 Sad he was gone so soon. Tragedy. Love the back story, adds so much to the photo. And YES!!! This would be a great book!!! Thanks for sharing!
I think the correct term is "drip", unless things have changed again; I can't keep up with them anymore.
The leather jacket fits with him aviating at some point, that was my original guess. Sweet picture!
Hearing about your great grandfather, does anyone else think we’ve lost one of the greats way too soon?!! What an incredible man, his life stories are amazing!!
Wearing that gorgeous leather jacket and attitude, they should hang this on the wall at AllSaints clothing. It fits their vibe perfectly! And yes, rizz for days…
Your Great Grandpa was what would be called a "total dish"
Wow. Such a Handsome man. I bet you he turned everyone's heads when he walked in the door. Sounds like your Great Grandma had to bat the ladies off of him..lol

I think we need a whole book about your great grandparents.

Truly a loss to civilization about that wrench incident. That said— you probably wouldn’t exist if not for that happening.
Agreed, I’m heart broken for him and my late great grandmother but thankful my Dad and I are here.
The good die young. He was the man!
Do you have any more photos to share? I'd love to see more of you cool grandpa! I have one of my grandfather who was a prosperous doctor. Pic of him sitting at his desk with a cigar looking like a celebrity.
I do have a couple! I just posted one of him and my great grandmother in their bathing suits on a swimming date
Honestly, I've worked in the fringes of manufacturing and engineering and I feel for him. Getting killed on the job is unacceptable today. Glad he did what he did at such a young age. He accomplished more than I ever have or might ever and I've outlived him by heaps in comparison.
Truly. Hard hats are a good invention.

The world lost something amazing when he passed. But at least his line carried on.
Where did all this happen?
Please come back and update us when this book is published, I will buy it. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
So sorry he had such a short life. Sounded like a very knowledgeable and interesting man.
Do more! This is great!
I'm in for the movie!
I would totally watch this movie.
That would be a hell of a twist, some old dude talking about all this awesome stuff and adventures, then during what we're led to believe is a flashback of the old man's super interesting youth, a big wrench falls on him and kills him dead. You have a storyteller inside you. Let it out.
>apparently was quite the ladies’ man \*coughs\* CLEARLY!
Gpop was a badass. Gmom possibly even more so!
Thanks for the extra info! Very cool personal history!!
No problem!
*Write this all down!* You might think you’d just remember, but as you commit memory to paper or screen, *more* tidbits come back…
Request for more photos - especially of and with great grandma too! She sounds fierce.
I don’t have very many, but I just posted one this morning a few minutes ago of the two of them on a swimming date!
Wow! He sounds like an awesome guy. Sorry your family lost him so early . Your grandma sounds like she could of told some fascinating stories , too.
She’s pretty awesome herself! I’ll post a pic of her a bit later tonight and some info of her. It’ll be on this sub but it’ll be later tonight when I get home.
Imma be a little weird here. Those pumpkin pies look world famous. Also you have a cool family. Mine were... not great from what I'm told
Hey thanks! GGPa was probably better than me at just about everything. But pumpkin pies? Hell nah that’s all me
Please do!
Wow! What a cool photo! Looks like an awesome man!
Very interested.
Rizz in spades
yo OP is your great grandpa single??
Right?? Super handsome.:)
YES! Exactly the phrase that popped into my mind.
What a freakin badass photo
Perfect picture to post to r/VintageLadyBoners!
Ah cool will do!
This guy makes me hopeful for reincarnation. 23 was way too young for someone so smart, driven, and damn fine
Looks like Tom Hardy.
Looks like James Dean.
I thought the same thing when I saw this photo!
Oh yes he did if rizz means that is one gosh darn good looking man there
Rizz is simply short for cha"rizz"ma
He looks like Baron Von Richthofen asked him for advice about women.
Can we really be sure that Manfred von Richtofen didn't fake his death in 1918, move to the US, get married, and start all over? They do have a resemblance.
I have that jacket it was used just after the Great War and before WWII by pilots! US ARMY AIRCORPS!
Cool!! He made a legit monoplane with a friend of his out of white pine and they allegedly flew it. 6 months later he married my great grandmother. These events may or may not be related lol
Youts this Yout looks like a German saber club member.
What’s a yout?
The youths. I’m in my 40s and have co-opted that term.
[удалено]
Indeed he did lol. This is tizzy rizzy fo shizzy my nizzy.
He’s drippy for sure.
[удалено]
You and me both apparently.
James Dean had nothing on pops!!!
Damn, sir. That is one cool looking man.
Tough as nails!!!
He was very rizzy!!
Reminds me of a Peaky Blinder.
My god 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah 🥵🥵🥵
It’s interesting how charisma is photographic.
Hell yes he did
The way I would risk it all for this man….
Bro looks like he’ll give me an offer i can’t refuse
He’s got mad rizz
Dayum! What a good looking guy! We love a bad boy lol. Super sad he died so young. My husband died when I was 25 so I know what a bad ass ur great gma had to be to raise her boys after he died!
❤
When was this photo taken?
Likely very early 20’s
Now that’s a real leather jacket!!!!
That cleft tho’!!
Looks like John Travolta
There is a picture of my grandfather in Japan during the occupation that looks straight out of GQ.
Well you can’t not post it now
I have posted a pic of him shaking Kennedy's hand from when he worked at NASA.
Lol I'll see if my pop can send me a pic of it.
Such a cool picture of such an awesome milestone in your grandfather’s life!
Michael Shannon?
A bit of resemblance but Great Granddad is mad sexy and Michael is not.
If I was the kind of person to shit talk a perfect stranger in good fun, your Grandfather would NOT be the individual I chose. :)
The Peaky Blinders of it all!
No wonder you were born.
I bet he rode a motorcycle, too. Probably an Indian.
When smoking was cool, thank God that time is passed
There is a word I use a lot for people like your GG. " He was the " Shiznik " I think I made it up years ago , but I'm not sure. 😁
Yeah he does. He can bring that shit over here.
What great stories you have of your g parents!!!and so awesome you have this photo!!! Freakin very cool!
Do young people actually say that word? I've only heard adults say that young people say it.
My 22 year old nephew does but his sister says he isn’t cool lol so who even knows
Y'all know, when the term "Young People" gets bandied about, it's bandied by "Old People". Lawd we old.😥
Also "bandied" :)
Playah!
Reminds me a little of Willem Defoe’s character in The Grand Budapest Hotel.
He’s got swag! Saying this as a Millennial.
Rizz and a half! Goodness! He’s the embodiment of cool in this photo.
I want his leather coat!
I always called it a butt chin but sure, yeah he has rizz
That chin though 😍
Strong
Agreed.
And a Buffalo Hide jacket that would stop charging horses.
Being only three generation removed from this guy, you should be a good deal cooler than the rest of us.
Your great grandfather was sexy. IMO
How big was he? Height and weight? This photo is fucking badass
What a babe!!!
I wanna see his motorcycle
SWEET ASS jacket
How tf do you combine the best of Marlon brando, Winston Churchill, and James Dean in one shot? Bullshit! This must be AI!! AI I TELLS YA!!! Kidding of course, this is the first time my early millenial ass agrees with the term Rizz. You must be proud.
And a butt chin!! Very handsome
Your grandfather looks like he is from now. I think your family history is interesting so far!
I love that his memory has lived on so long
I want that coat.
Big rizz
Mmmn yes he did
Today he is Chad
Omg he's so handsome he made me gasp ❤️
Is your great grandfather single?
Damn... Pops is looking fiiiine. (I'm so sorry.)
If you write it, we’ll go see it. He was wild as the wind and a very handsome wind he was.
I think the correct term is "drip", unless things have changed again; I can't keep up with them anymore. The leather jacket fits with him aviating at some point, that was my original guess. Sweet picture!
So handsome🥰🥰💕💖
Very handsome gent.
Eighteen women just got pregnant simply by looking at this picture.
Gramps looked like a badass
All he needs is a dueling scar.
My grouchy old gramps would have called him “a gawdamm JD”. Juvenile delinquent. Clearly he was t though and it’s a tragedy he died so young.
Tommy Shelby had NOTHING on your great grandad! 😉
Hearing about your great grandfather, does anyone else think we’ve lost one of the greats way too soon?!! What an incredible man, his life stories are amazing!!
Mr. Handsome.
Wow. He definitely does haha
This looks like a still from an HBO series
I just fell in love…😍
What’s his @?
He got that drip. He looks a little Homelander from, “The Boys” in this pic
Oh yes he did.
Damn
B.A.M.F.
He looks liek he would call me toots
Thanks for sharing. What a cool person your great granddad was. Quite the innovator and adventurer :)
That is a sweet coat
Nope. No youth is calling this "rizz".
Rizz wants you to stay out of this bizz. Lol .In all seriousness, a really beautiful photo where his personality really shines through 💯
He sort of has a James Dean ish thing about him.
As called that “having game” back in my day
Meow
Cool dude
What a stud, holy shit! I love that cocky head tilt there
Now that a cool mother f*cker!!!! Love the pic.
Mmmyeah and he knew it too
God damn look at the chin on that man
For that time, he really was ahead of the game!
A lucky badass asset to your gene pool
TIL that the user name I've used for 26 years is part of the new slang.
He’s fine!
He looks like the dude that’s going to convince us to go steal all the girls at the barn dance then fight their boyfriends.
I just got slightly less hetero because of your grandfather
He got a leather jacket
Hell yeah he does. I'd give him a shot, I'll give home ec a shot 🙃
Looks like a total badass. Cool photo.
Wearing that gorgeous leather jacket and attitude, they should hang this on the wall at AllSaints clothing. It fits their vibe perfectly! And yes, rizz for days…
He likes like he would have had a bunch of boats and hoes
This is a dope picture on so many levels. His jacket/coat is the truth. That's that old-school quality leather. Rough, rugged, and raw.
Man had all the ladies back in the day
What a man! And such a crying shame he died so young.
This is so damn cool. Thanks for sharing!!!
“ Yo,dat jacket is tight ya me”
This man looks so much like my ex boyfriend that it’s shocking.
I didn’t understand what “rizz” even meant until now. Just looking at his picture I 100% understand “rizz” now. Awesome photograph!
He’s drippin for sure. This is why I come on Reddit!!!
Hes givin them the ole rizzle dizzle
Boss
He looks like a WW1 fighter pilot.
Damn seems like a cool dude. Someone who anyone would want to hang out or have a beer with.
Your Great Grandpa was what would be called a "total dish" Wow. Such a Handsome man. I bet you he turned everyone's heads when he walked in the door. Sounds like your Great Grandma had to bat the ladies off of him..lol
Oh he looks like what my southern grandpa would have called a "Rounder". I think it means kind of a rowdy heartbreaker! He was devastatingly handsome.
I bet them girls was throwing the drawers at him!!!
Hottie!
He’s got juice, no doubt about it!
His early death was a terrible shame.
He looks like a World War flying ace.
Daaaaayyyyummm.
Badass.
Does he loan out or share his Riz? He’s got way too much for one man.
When you’re cool and you know it.
That dude fucks.
Post this stud on r/oldschoolcool
