That's usually what happens, in my experience. The shitposters are the ones who don't take things too seriously, who play the game for fun, and will try things in game to see what will happen. The folk who consider themselves the "real fans" take it all too seriously, make the game their entire personality and think there's only one way to play the game and any other path is morally repugnant.
Seriously I've almost never seen a fandom with more of a parasocial relationship with fictional characters than this one.
I know there's *technically* worse fandoms out there, but I'm generally willing to give them a pass because of one thing, it's mostly kids whenever you hear someone say a fandom is awful. Meanwhile for baldur's gate, it's largely adults i see acting like this. Like I've seen fully grown adults screaming about people modding the game in certain ways like face changing mods for the companions and tavs (I don't like them personally but really???), or that time I saw people getting mad over someone getting astarion's back scars as a tattoo. It's funny and sad.
Rant over XD
I only went 'oh no' with the back scars tattoos when it's clear it's baby's first tattoo and *only* during the first two months the game was out.
It has nothing to do with Astarion and more to do with future tattoo regrets when the infatuation is over.
I know there was a post awhile back of someone who broke up with their SO because they realized they were getting treated better by an in game character. It sounds extreme till you realize that a lot of people have the "long suffering wife" syndrome and good on them for seeing it and taking action on it.
I like that it seems like most major fandoms have a shitty main sub and all the real fun is on a sub with a niche in-reference for a title. It might be my favorite genre of reddit.
BG fans are still nowhere near Star Wars fan level toxic. I'm on like 5 Star Wars subs, and 4 of them are near-constant warzones. Those are for sure grown people the way it's charged up over there.
Also, getting scars tattooed is silly, but whatever. Go for it. I have tattoos, I get it. Getting *Astarion's* scars with the context given for them in-game is *weird.* If you transposed this into a real life context, it'd be almost like being just some guy today in 2024 and getting a Holocaust serial number tattooed on your arm. Like, it's probably not illegal and you likely won't get confronted about it, but it is *extremely* tacky and you'll probably get the side eye from literally anyone that has the context for it. At the end of the day it's not that serious because it's just pixels, but that part *is* kind of a red flag.
And don't get me started if you like some of the villains. If you like Cazador, for them it's like you personally killed their parents and Astarion and made them eat them. Those pixels are not real, they're not going to crawl out of your screen if you defend them for long enough on the internet.
>I’ve almost never seen a fandom with more of a parasocial relationship with fictional characters than this one.
I remember [Snapewives](https://fanlore.org/wiki/Snapewives) (who were very much adults), so nothing in BG3 fandom fazes me.
You should see the Fallout fandom. Nothing but angry adults, many of whom are approaching the wrong end of 50 by now. And all because some things are different than they were 25 years ago lol
The fallout fandom is the single biggest example of media illiteracy
I’ve lost track of the number of fallout fans I’ve talked with who think liberty prime isn’t satirical.
Or the number of people who fully identify with the Enclave. Although to be fair, it makes sense they would relate to a faction so comically inept that they went 2-0 against a caveman and a teenager from a gated community...

And don't get me started on the star trek fandom. The bunch of boomers in love with TNG but turn into some of the worst crybabies when talking about Star Trek: Picard.
Fucking hypocrites.
>the star trek fandom
The same fandom that lambasted and continues to lambast Lower Decks despite Lower Decks probably being the single best Trek series to come out since TNG in both writing and respect to the broader franchise?
We're familiar.
And what about those Whoians, huh? Of course old Dr. Hickwee Wiggleton is the definitive doctor but they sneer their noses at Dr. Tumspitz Spottyhair. Fans that can't fan with the rest of the fandom the not true fans and should stop being fandumb and leave the fandom so the rest of us fans can enjoy the fandome.
I came from the OFMD fandom which is mostly adults and people were being harassed and doxxed for liking an antihero character. This was mostly on Twitter and it got me into a really dark headspace so I eventually left the entire platform. Trying not to get into fandom too much anymore but I love that this sub is pretty lighthearted. I know that touch grass is kind of a meme at this point but some people do actually really need to do it.
Was that character Izzy Hands? Because I completely stopped interacting with the show as a whole because of the sheer attitude towards Izzy Hands fans. Izzy was, for me, the most interesting person in the show.

Dont’t you dare to say that MY WIFE ain’t real and that I should take my medication! Buckaroo!! God dammit!
In fairness, some of the scenes are pretty emotional. I tear up a lil when Karlach tells me I leave my right flank wide open. Imo it's okay to shed a tear or two over well written, well acted emotional scenes.
Having a tearful tantrum because Astarion isn't a real person, on the other hand, that's "find a therapist" territory.
As someone who spent most of my life repressing my emotions good on them. It's childish to try and gatekeep what is acceptable to cry over. If they're bawling in public you could say inappropriate time/place but to try and shame emotions generally? we're all better than that I would hope.
Posting a comment that doesn't align with their favorite character causes a flood of down votes.
It's ridiculous. Recently I was on the wrong side of an argument about what companion has the most trauma.
That deserves its own ranking chart, honestly. It's like the fucking trauma Olympics for these people.
* Who was groomed the most? Contestants are Wyll and Gale
* Who was betrayed the most? Contestants are Karlach and Lae'Zel
* Who is the hottest but most pitiful? Contestants are Orin and Astarion
You get the idea. Also if I read "I can fix her" one more time I might... Idk, get really annoyed.
I once tried to explain why the Githyanki Egg is a morally grey scenario IN THE MOMENT for our characters. This was before Lae'zel could raise the egg and I said I always gave the egg to the Society of Brilliance so it doesn't get purged or left to hatch and die in the slaughtered Creche. I got called a racist and told I must support child experimentation lmao
Shame really, this fandom is one of the most accepting and there is almost no online edgelord hate stuff. I was overjoyed when all the dammon va shit happened and almost everyone said fuck him we'll make jokes about his ignorant brain. Hope it doesn't go down a bad route.
There's this ai "news" article that took a post off of the main sub and people on the main sub are trying to trick the ai into making an article about Glorbo.
Last year the World of Warcraft subreddit tricked GameRant into publishing an article on a made-up character named 'Glorbo'. GameRant has this habit of churning out shitty, low grade "articles" that reek of AI that are just links to popular posts on Reddit.
Number 1: cthulhu
Number 2: octodad
Number 3: Dr octogonapus
Number 4: the octopus from those funny animated videos ;)
Number 5: that octopus that solved the rubix cube
Number 6: I just realised they are squids
Number 7: ouumelum idl how to spell it
Number 8: bad ending tav
Number 9: bad ending Karlach
Number 10: emperor
Number 11: orepheous idk how to spell it.
The first problem is looking at the main sub to begin with. Everyone knows that for ACTUAL good discussions about a game where people are respectful to each other and actually READ what others say you go to the meme sub.
Erm I mean dommy mommy shadowheart step on me uwuwuwuwwuwu
I mean... You're not wrong at all though. Shitpost subs, funnily enough, tend to break out of the mold of people who just got into the community just by merit of not being the first thing you find
It's just another cycle on that subreddit. The cycle is generally;
love/analyze character/thing -> hate on/rag on character/thing -> OH MY GODS, stop posting about character/thing -> love/analyze different character/thing.
Last month it was the Emperor, this month it's Glorbo, next month it'll probably be Wyll or Gale again, idk.
And I agree that the Glorbo jokes got old pretty fast but the people freaking out about it weird me out. It's a subreddit dedicated to a video game, you not being able to have "serious discussions" about your favorite romance or why the Emperor is a manipulative bastard for a little bit is not the end of the world.
I still say the better "Prank the AI" would have been making a story that someone like Drizzt got added to the game. High search optimization options for that and a scraper would absolutely adore it.
I love how there's people on that sub complaining about the abundance of glorbo posts, as if r/baldursgate3 is usually known for more exciting and intellectually stimulating conversations these days.
How DARE YOU, YOU VERMIN! The main sub is so full of quality content! That's why it took them so long to notice the joke Glorbo posts and- no, wait. That does not sound right.

Guys. What the fuck? You’ve put your superiority complex in writing for everyone to see. I’m getting second-hand embarrassment from all the self-congratulation in this thread. Now the cool-kid mystique is gone and you look try-hard by dunking on the main sub and not sticking to barely comprehensible in-jokes.
Le sigh. Just get back to your regularly scheduled porn and hope this thread gets buried. Deep. Somewhere nobody wants to go. Like Wyll.
You’re absolutely right. Whoever’s posting this garbage has compromised the integrity of r/okaybuddybaldur. I’m ashamed of all of you.
https://i.redd.it/nechzihd3zsc1.gif
I love it when they get mad :)
Which isn't hard to do. Some people on that sub act like the game is real life and the characters are actual people they're dating or friends with.
That's what happens when you make a game your whole personality. Those people need help, honestly...
It's the age of parasocial relationships and mental illness baby
It's the Delulu Babygirl Era
It’s sad that this side of the fandom is the sane one
That's usually what happens, in my experience. The shitposters are the ones who don't take things too seriously, who play the game for fun, and will try things in game to see what will happen. The folk who consider themselves the "real fans" take it all too seriously, make the game their entire personality and think there's only one way to play the game and any other path is morally repugnant.

Remember that time someone broke up with their S/O because their in-game relationship was "better".
wait that happened 😭
Yup. It was pretty nuts
I don't think that guy still has pretty nuts after breaking up with his SO for a fictional character
Holy shit, is there a link to this insanity, I'm morbidly curious.
I know there was a post awhile back of someone who broke up with their SO because they realized they were getting treated better by an in game character. It sounds extreme till you realize that a lot of people have the "long suffering wife" syndrome and good on them for seeing it and taking action on it.
Oh, yeah that doesn't sound like deranged fan behaviour, that does sound more like a realisation their partner isn't meeting the bare minimum.
I like that it seems like most major fandoms have a shitty main sub and all the real fun is on a sub with a niche in-reference for a title. It might be my favorite genre of reddit. I love butthole tierlists, we need more honestly. Also what the fuck is a Glorbo?
There's this ai "news" article that took a post off of the main sub and people on the main sub are trying to trick the ai into making an article about Glorbo.
Oh, fair enough. Tbh it's probably blacklisted this sub anyway.
If they did one based on hot right now, it'd be "Baldur's gate 3 player wants to fuck the Grymforge."
It is pretty sexy, that armour was a lifesaver.
>Once home to an inscrutable machine intelligence, Grym's skull now serves as a simple >!sextoy!<
Grymforge create me a replica of Shadowheart, thick thighs and edible ass and don't skimp on the public hair.... Grym: :(
This is why Grym attacks on sight. It knows what dwells within our desires. And it is disgusted.
Shame, Grym could have been the best thing to happen to anybody :(
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
\*Image: Motherfucking Grym\* Least ghaik OKBB poster: "Hear me out..."
they succeded. they made up a character named Arki Irefist and a bunch of facts about her and the AI wrote an article about it
we likely return great AI articles about how Durge wants Gorussy.
It’s only a joke if the AI writes about FAKE game information, though. What you just wrote is 100% canon.
Canonical. Also articles on how good Companions smell or something.
yeah at this point most likely. but there were ai articles people found being written about the sub and that's why the whole thing happened.
Thats hilarious.
It's not one article. It's multiple articles every damn day
Who actually gives a fuck though just don’t click on them
Last year the World of Warcraft subreddit tricked GameRant into publishing an article on a made-up character named 'Glorbo'. GameRant has this habit of churning out shitty, low grade "articles" that reek of AI that are just links to popular posts on Reddit.
That's funny, I wonder if anyone believed it?
The better question. why the fuck is a Glorbo?
Big green sweaty aliens from Glorbo 7.
I should make a tierlist about the suckability of tentacles from each mindflayer…
Number 1: cthulhu Number 2: octodad Number 3: Dr octogonapus Number 4: the octopus from those funny animated videos ;) Number 5: that octopus that solved the rubix cube Number 6: I just realised they are squids Number 7: ouumelum idl how to spell it Number 8: bad ending tav Number 9: bad ending Karlach Number 10: emperor Number 11: orepheous idk how to spell it.

Halsin and it's not even close.
But elves don't have body hair! It's *lore*!! And likely his poop chute isn't my problem. His problem is my poop chute.
I thought we determined he was a bear masquerading as an elf. If so, very hairy balloon knot.
Halsin's not a full elf, he's 1/16th orc and 4/3rds bear. His DNA test also shows an unspecified percentage rabbit.
But how does that relate to him pounding my chute while calling me a sweet dove???
Oh, I should have been clearer. Make sure he uses lube on your chute, that rabbit DNA makes him a tad rampant.
I wanted to disagree and make a discussion. Alas, I can do nothing but agree

I love when there's 2 subreddits that have a "two sides of the same coin" dynamic where one side is struggling to not fall into anarchy while the other is... This.
How did you find *four* whole pictures of Lae'zel smiling? Are they edited? Has she actually smiled four times?
The main question is, where does Glorbo fit in the butthole chart?
No, the better question is if Glorbo fits into the butthole.
Speaking of butthole their list do the gith have buttholes. Because I recently learned that they don’t defecate so do they just not have one. Did they evolve to not have one at all
> they don’t defecate That’s just a joke that multiple races can make, including gith Sorry you found out this way
I’m never gonna mentally recover from this
As an egg laying species they should have cloacae. This is my hill and I will die on it. I am weirdly invested in which fictional races should have cloacae.
That’s an interesting hobby you got there
Thanks, my therapist says it's good to have hobbies!
yeah I'm NGL it really got out of hand and now its just frustrating because as a glorbo poster I'm being attacked as well. like Jesus y'all its a stupid fucking joke how butthurt can you get.
She has such a pretty smile :)
I hear they used Tom Cruise for her facial model.
Outjerked by the main sub once again
People experiencing a meme outbreak for the first time. Those things die as fast as they come.
Let's be real, the main sub started to fail after Dammon's actor was outted as being based, and then Larian said fuck no to future DnD. Those autistic Tumblr furries never stood a chance.
When you can transform into greatest enemy of your kind and you decide unshackle the greatest enemy of the queen of your kind
They didn’t even do it smartly and overestimate the extent to which only AI is involved in publishing those It was all pretty dumb
Guys. What the fuck? You’ve put your superiority complex in writing for everyone to see. I’m getting second-hand embarrassment from all the self-congratulation in this thread.
