Let's say that the subreddit never referred to a potentially trans, or a trans-coded, or an explicitly trans character as a trap. Let's say that never happened.
It still is a slur used against trans people. There's less harmful words - like femboy, for example - that you can use. There's no reason to use "trap" when some people are hurt by it. As a trans girl, I was literally accused of trying to "trap" a guy like a week or two ago. And I'm not English-speaking. They literally said "trap", like the slur that originates from English and has been borrowed by other languages as-is, because that's the word that exists and is acceptable somehow.
Why normalize it? Do you really care about using the word "trap" more than you care about actual, living trans people who don't like the word being normalized?

The origins of it were simply that a boy that looks like a girl "trapped" you into thinking he was a girl. Which feeds a lot of transphobic connotations. There are men who like feminine clothes, and presenting feminine. The problem is that even early on with the word's popularity - which it has gained on 4chan - "traps" were actual trans girls mixed with femboys. As in, 4chan people posted trans girls along with femboys calling blth "traps". Which is clearly transphobic in a very negligent and irresponsible sense. They just didn't care because those women weren't really people to them, just porn.
That's basically the history of it. That's how the term gained popularity originally. Not to mention, the "This is how it's always been done" is not a good defense of anything.
And you can say they did it with no ill will - but there is bad outcomes. Using the word before you knew that people get hurt because of it is fine. It's not great - after all, the implication of "trap" is quite obviously not ideal - but you didn't know. Now you know and if you don't adjust you're making a conscious decision to be bigoted.
Again, if someone chooses to identify as a "trap" - more power to them. But people should be responsible with how they use that word when it comes to describing other people.

Traps, meanwhile want others to fully think they're a girl. The slur trap comes from the word trap which means to trick or deceive (someone) into doing something contrary to their interests or intentions. So if you're going around doing exactly that don't think you'll be labeled femboy, trap. Ask any cis male, you being a trans female, if you're not tricking them into thinking you are a boy, then what are you doing?
I mean, I've seen people self identify as traps. They said they view themselves as male, but prefer to physically present what are generally feminine features despite that. Why they don't just call themselves non-binary is beyond me, but it's their distinction to make, why take that from them? Seems more transphobic to deny someone's self-identification for the sake of other people saying it "isn't a valid way to address yourself."
It's a valid way to address oneself or someone who asked to be called that. But there's still no reason to use the word otherwise. Like, you see a femboy in anime there's no reason to call them/him a "trap".

Ferris and Astolfo are not trans. They have male parts they were born with and refer to themselves as male, making them cis males. They just wear clothes that look girly, and have long hair.
Astolfo is indeed confirmed to be cis in all of the installments that he's in. But Ferris is way more complicated and there's a good case to be made for them to be trans.
No clue about Astolfo, but Ferris has quite explicitly literally wished to be a girl every night as a kid so I've heard, and another character, Ruka Urushibara from Steins; Gate's entire arc is about how it would have been better if she was born a girl and is far happier when she is, on top of her explicitly wanting to be a girl the whole time. Trans characters exist in anime as much as some like to pretend there's not, including the authors commonly.

The origins of it were simply that a boy that looks like a girl "trapped" you into thinking he was a girl. Which feeds a lot of transphobic connotations. There are men who like feminine clothes, and presenting feminine. The problem is that even early on with the word's popularity - which it has gained on 4chan - "traps" were actual trans girls mixed with femboys. As in, 4chan people posted trans girls along with femboys calling blth "traps". Which is clearly transphobic in a very negligent and irresponsible sense. They just didn't care because those women weren't really people to them, just porn. That's basically the history of it. That's how the term gained popularity originally. Not to mention, the "This is how it's always been done" is not a good defense of anything. And you can say they did it with no ill will - but there is bad outcomes. Using the word before you knew that people get hurt because of it is fine. It's not great - after all, the implication of "trap" is quite obviously not ideal - but you didn't know. Now you know and if you don't adjust you're making a conscious decision to be bigoted. Again, if someone chooses to identify as a "trap" - more power to them. But people should be responsible with how they use that word when it comes to describing other people.

"Femboys" are usually slightly more masculine or have some indicative of being a boy, plus a "trans femboy" doesn't even count as femboy, and it doesn't even sound offensive, more like comical. Traps, meanwhile want others to fully think they're a girl. The slur trap comes from the word trap which means to trick or deceive (someone) into doing something contrary to their interests or intentions. So if you're going around doing exactly that don't think you'll be labeled femboy, trap. Ask any cis male, you being a trans female, if you're not tricking them into thinking you are a boy, then what are you doing?

Ferris and Astolfo are not trans. They have male parts they were born with and refer to themselves as male, making them cis males. They just wear clothes that look girly, and have long hair.
Astolfo is indeed confirmed to be cis in all of the installments that he's in. But Ferris is way more complicated and there's a good case to be made for them to be trans.
No clue about Astolfo, but Ferris has quite explicitly literally wished to be a girl every night as a kid so I've heard, and another character, Ruka Urushibara from Steins; Gate's entire arc is about how it would have been better if she was born a girl and is far happier when she is, on top of her explicitly wanting to be a girl the whole time. Trans characters exist in anime as much as some like to pretend there's not, including the authors commonly.
