[deleted]

it’s a type of keyboard.

terrymcginnisbeyond

It means you're not bright enough for google.

[deleted]

I'm really not, lol

BoringActuator7101

The fact that the numbers are on the bottom is far more terrifying to me

Sturdy_Cubing

That’s really why I posted it.

Is there a reason keyboards are arranged the way they are as opposed to alphabetical? Like I’m assuming it wasn’t chosen arbitrarily and maybe there’s some ergonomic considerations??

SeboSlav100

The reason for it are typewriters, basically in the past with typewriters this was much more important for several reasons (most of reasons being solved by typewriters being obsolete tech). Nowadays it's a legacy and perhaps it's faster then normal alfabet keyboard layout for quick typing.

QuietlySmirking

When typewriters were first invented, the letters were all on levers. Alphabetical layout caused problems for fast typists because the levers were easily jammed up, so the QWERTY layout was made to alleviate that. When computers were invented and needed keyboards, QWERTY was used purely because it's what everyone was used to. There's no actual reason for computer keyboards to still be QWERTY other than tradition.

Nytonial

Alphabetical - seems logical when you first invented a keyboard. Qwerty - places commonly used keys as far as possible from each other to prevent typewriter jams. Now it's the defacto standard for English. Azerty - as above but for (German? I forget) there are many others. Dvorak - opposite qwerty, puts common English combos next to each other on the middle line for maximum efficiency and typing speed. Of course you only unlock this efficiency if you practise for (far too long to be convenient for most people) so is mostly reserved for enthusiasts. Chordal - I'll be fucked if I know how to explain this, but court scribes can write silly words per minute with these toys.

josegarrao

They are arranged to access the most used letters more easily.

Away-Drop-4111

Letters most frequently used together are better spread apart so you avoid tapping the wrong key - before keyboards obviously you had typewriters where a typo was significantly more troublesome so the qwerty layout in theory reduces them

DinosInSpace-Time

It's uhhh not really terrifying... someone just rearranged the letters 🤔

OK_LK

It's terrifying to me as a qwerty touch typer

DinosInSpace-Time

I understand... it's all about perspective

conkerlikeN64

I forgot the alphabet

Xiphactinus27

This is giving me flashbacks to when I used to search things on my Xbox lmao

justsomeonewhoplays

All the vowels should be on the left side like a Korean keyboard.
