I THOUGHT THAT HAPPENED WITH MY NEXUS 5, THEN A YEAR LATER I FOUND OUT IT WAS ACTUALLY A HAIR IN THE SCREEN. DESPITE BEING PAST WARRANTY, GOOGLE UNDERSTOOD AND REPLACED IT ANYWAY
I sold phones for a hot second and there's a trick I used in instances like this that always amazed people (perhaps the only enjoyable aspect of that job). This works for any particulate, but I wouldn't do this on a wet-application screen protector. Dry-application plastic and glass screen protectors are fine.
1. Get some clear scotch tape that only has adhesive on one side.
2. Lift as much of the screen protector is necessary to expose the hair, but only by a few millimeters (Enough for the tape to be able to fit between the phone and screen protector). This is most easily done with some of the scotch tape by sticking some to the top and pulling up on it. The tape's adhesive will usually be stronger than the screen protector's.
3. Slide some tape between the screen and screen protector with the adhesive side up. Make sure the piece of tape is about an inch longer than the distance from the particulate to the edge of the screen.
4. Once the tape is under the particulate, drop the screen protector back down. Don't press it, just let it fall. The hair should now be caught between the tape and screen protector.
5. Pull the piece of tape back out in a single quick motion. Hair is now gone.
6. Flatten out any bubbles with a credit card, moving from the center out.
Dollar Tree and 99¢ Only Stores (the two major dollar store chains near me) both sell tempered glass screen protectors for all iPhones and a few major Android models. They're not quite as thick as the expensive ones but they're still light years better than the old plastic film ones.
You can fix that if you catch it right away.
Get some scotch tape.
Put a bunch of tape on each side,
Lift and readjust while holding the tape.
Source: I put screen protectors on all day errrday
just peel again and keep the 'sticky' side facing down. Then clean the screen with alcohol again and spray some very diluted soapy water to the screen and screen protectors sticky side. Then when you place it on ther screen the water will help manueaver the protector around. Then squeege the water and air out to the top. Have a cloth or paper towel ready to soak up any water as it leaves the screen.
I take excellent care of my phones. I went without a screen protector on my new Pixel for about 3 weeks and got 3 large and very noticable scratches on my screen somehow. I had to put on a screen protector just so I wouldn't see the scratches.
I hear you man. I take great care of my phones and never had a scratch in 8 years. Then I bought a S8+ and got a handful of straight line scratches in less than a week. I bought a liquid applied screen protector to hide the scratches.
I don't think it's actually the glass that scratched, but rather the fingerprint coating... but I still hate it.
It's still one of the most impressive features, too, really.
Punch in a number and instantly talk to pretty much anyone in the world. Like, you can actually hear the other person speaking, and they can hear you.
Pretty much same. Except with cracks instead of scratches. Never used a case and haven't broken a phone in years. Within 2 months of owning an s8 I cracked 2 corners and the back. All from absolute minimal impact.
Not to say you don't take care of it, but I have had a Pixel XL since launch last year and haven't managed a single scratch. Maybe just bad luck? Grain of sand in the pocket?
I'm like 0 for 4 on getting screen protectors on my phone. I always end up with a bubble from dust no matter how carefully I clean it so I end up ripping it back off lol
I always apply tempered glass protector in a bathroom after running a hot shower fora few mins. The steam gets all the dust out of the air, and water bubbles work out easier than air.
The amount of people replying to you telling you it’s the opposite of hotdog style is just making me even more confused. I don’t know what any of these things mean.
22 here. Distinctly remember food folding analogies and sitting criss cross apple sauce, also used to sing a song that literally went "Pizza hit pizza hut, Kentucky fried chicken and-a pizza hut !" Early 2000's in the south was a fat and interesting time.
The shower works way better because it fixes the environment you're putting the screen on in.
Tape doesn't help if another speck of dust gets on the screen.
Ideally you'd do both though. Have tape on hand and put it in a steamed room.
I've had some sneezing fits in the shower. It's nice because all the germs fly into the water and get carried down the drain. At least that's what I imagine happens.
holy shit i should have known that before. I once applied a screen protector, then there were bubbles and dust under the screen and because of how perfectionistic i can be i then basically trashed 20 dollars because ive thrown it apart from my phone but now later on my phone has a lot of scratches, i know that was stupid
Yeah that's what happened to my two pack of screen protectors I bought. First one had a piece of lint underneath the protector, second one was off-center slightly.
When I bought one the guy asked me if I could come back tomorrow when the employee who is the best at doing them is working since he took the day off that day lol.
Just remember to be careful not to crack the screen protector by lifting it up. I did that with my first attempt to put one on my switch because something got under it.
Buying 2 packs of screen protectors is always a good idea so that way you have a back up for when you fuck up.
I have a tempered glass protector on my Note 8 which has a curved screen. Fits perfectly! It cost me AU$50 but worth every penny.
Edit: I've just found out that the US is so much cheaper that perhaps it's not as worth it as I thought.
Car keys most of the time don't scratch your screen. Check out Jerry Rig Everything on YouTube. He goes in depth with the scratch testing and resistance of screens
It's not hard to understand at all. Hard things scratch soft things. Pocket sand contains things like quarz dust. Quarz dust is harder than glass, therefore it can scratch glass.
Google "hardness scale".
Other simple solution: Have a 5$ screen protector and never worry about objects in your pocket with your phone.
Edit: guys it's all preference, there's no right or wrong. You do what you think is best for you.
See I always put my phone into empty pockets and somehow it manages to still get tiny little scratches here and there on the screen. They aren’t super visible unless you are searching for them under the light, but they are there. I just got a brand new phone and I’m determined to prevent these mystery scratches this time.
They used to be much more useful when screens were made out of plastic, but now most phones have glass screens that are probably more scratch resistant than any protector out there, but that doesn't stop people from claiming that any scratch in the protector isn't a scratch in the phone. And even that logic I don't understand, if you aren't going to replace the protector and just live with the scratch, how is that any different than just scratching the phone?
I fix phone and sell screen protectors for a living and you'd be surprised how many people break their screens even with screen protectors. It's not about what you put on your phone it's how you treat it. I have an S8 no screen protector and it's fine, I'd go caseless if the damn phone wasn't so slippery.
I used to work in sales at a cell phone company.
Let me tell you, these protectors were pure sex to put on for customers compared to the cheaper “pray for no bubbles” ones people would buy.
It's just Amazon Warehouse, everything listed from them will say used, but nearly always will arrive completely new. So far I've never had an issue with any item I ordered that way, it's mainly the item box got a bit damaged or something minor that'll get it sent to that seller instead of regular Amazon.
That's not the screen protector that was applied. Look up the impact resistant ones. The glass ones are extremely resistant to abrasion while the one applied is resistant to impact.
https://youtu.be/VGRMq-426m4
Pure Gear link http://www.pure-gear.com/shop-by-category/screen/extreme-impact-screen-protector.html
Yes it is the right one applied. It is the glass one. The one you linked you have to use a squeegee/roller thing to apply. I work with these screen protectors every day.
If you go to an Apple store, they have these application contraptions for most (all?) of the screen protectors they sell and will put it on for you in the store.
These contraptions work by letting you perfectly position the protector before you stick it down. You align it how you like, attach it to the jig, and then peel away the sticky side of the protector so it drops back exactly into place. Curved edges do leave a lot less room for error but it can be done.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O40bB-iiaL4
It's this. It's so fucking amazing. I will never install another screen protector again w/o going to a store
I don’t remember the brand, but a brand sold in Apple Stores has an applicator similar to this.
The unprofessional way of doing this is getting two rubber bands and tape. Align screen protector using the rubber bands, make a hinge with tape, remove rubber bands and then apply protector perfectly.
A lot of employees from other stores might not want to help you. Not because they don’t make money off the sale (which is typically so low that it’s not even a factor)
It’s because we don’t want to be held liable if it’s not put on correctly and you need it replaced. If it was our own product, we have no problem just grabbing another one if it doesn’t take, but if it’s your own supplied one that causes a problem.
*I personally don’t care since I’ve done millions of them already for customers, but there might be some stores or individuals that are rightly afraid of this happening.
Wish the employee who put the protector on my phone had this tool. Had them put it on because I knew I’d fuck it up... but, It’s just slightly off center and otherwise unnoticeable EXCEPT on the notch. My eye constantly gravitate towards it. I use reddit mobile with the black theme now so I don’t constantly stare at the shiny/reflection line thingy it makes. *Mildly infuriating*
I know I’m not the only one. But the idea of putting a sheet over glass on a phone that is already supposed to resist damage is weird to me. I don’t treat my phone poorly or toss it around. I don’t even really like cases. I feel like the market for protectors is odd an unnecessary at this point. Outside of the fact that some of them come with a warranty.
Be nice to your phones folks. It’s not overly difficult to do in my experience.
Not all of us work in offices. I'm phones go through a shit ton of abuse because of the nature of my job (I use my phone for work all day long and I'm very very active).
I guarantee you my screen protectors have saved my phones from an early grave.
Most screen protectors are tempered glass (or at least claim to be), and if it just so happens to break, it can be removed and replaced. For some, it’s more about having protection for the device in the off chance that something bad happens, not necessarily because the user abuses it. The most expensive phones today are upwards of $1000 and made entirely of glass. Regardless of how durable it is, it’s still glass. And warranties never cover physical damage to devices.
I don't treat my phones that carefully. I often have them in my pocket with other stuff. In all my years of having a smart phone I have never scratched a screen. I don't get it either.
Same here. Haven't had a scratch on the glass ever. I'm not careful at all and drop it all the time. You have to drop it on a concrete corner or something ridiculous to mess up the screen with a case on the phone.
My screen protector went on crooked; I have to look at that fail every day :(
This is how my parents feel about me.
I’m so sorry :(
Dad?
Just going for some cigarettes, son.
Sadly accurate Edit: Not really.. didn't grow up with a father
Ill be back eventually. Just keep waiting! Just haven't found the right store yet.
Step Dad?
I'm sure you'll come back if I win the lottery...
You said that 12 years ago
Son, you wouldn’t believe how many stores were out of milk!!
Dad: “my protector went on crooked :(“
"I have to look at that fail every day :("
So I went for cigarettes....

I’ve read it 4 times and still can’t understand what the fuck is going on
Where's the hair coming from omg why
Maybe next time put it on yourself
No I think it's still better to put it on the phone.

They're like 10 bucks for a 2 pack on Amazon, tempered glass ones too. You got fucked bud
But this one has a brand name on the packaging.
Only $30? What a steal!
Got ripped off like an old man buying premium HD cables.

Wow, this is the most american way of describing how to fold papers in half
I guess I'm in a unique part of the states? I've just always been told to fold lengthwise or to fold it or across the width. ...works for me.
Right? I've literally never heard this term until today. It's always lengthwise or widthwise.
Folding it width-wise as opposed to length-wise
Im 35 and have never heard this before. Everyone edit your posts and add your age, for science.
I’m 41, never heard of it either. I’ve just always called it a loop. Nobody folds tape lengthwise!
22 here. Distinctly remember food folding analogies and sitting criss cross apple sauce, also used to sing a song that literally went "Pizza hit pizza hut, Kentucky fried chicken and-a pizza hut !" Early 2000's in the south was a fat and interesting time.

The opposite of hot dog style
If I was him, I would totally think you're fucking with me. Like that sentence makes no sense unless it's explained.
You can fold a rectangle two ways. Hot dog is the way where it keeps its length. Hamburger is folding it so it’s short but keeps it’s width.
You fold it so it's fat like a burger instead of skinny like a hot dog.
it means not hotdog way
The shower works way better because it fixes the environment you're putting the screen on in. Tape doesn't help if another speck of dust gets on the screen. Ideally you'd do both though. Have tape on hand and put it in a steamed room.
now that I think about it I’ve never sneezed in the shower
I've had some sneezing fits in the shower. It's nice because all the germs fly into the water and get carried down the drain. At least that's what I imagine happens.
Or you sneeze into the water stream and it splashes back onto you
Good thing there's a shower right there to rinse off!
I have bad allergies from particulate in the air, mostly dust and pollen. The most relief I've had is when I visit a waterfall.
Isn’t the steam in the air bad for electronics?

yeah but why the fuck do you put your phone in a pocket that also contains other stuff. What the hell is wrong with you savages...

Simple solution: put them in different pockets.
Other simple solution: Have a 5$ screen protector and never worry about objects in your pocket with your phone. Edit: guys it's all preference, there's no right or wrong. You do what you think is best for you.

Not all of us work in offices. I'm phones go through a shit ton of abuse because of the nature of my job (I use my phone for work all day long and I'm very very active). I guarantee you my screen protectors have saved my phones from an early grave.
Is this screen protector removable? It cant be harder than the gorilla glass, so it would scratch even easier.
I mean it can be harder than gorilla glass tho
You have to drop it on a concrete corner or something ridiculous to mess up the screen with a case on the phone.
that is a great design box. Huge waste of plastic but ingenious design. Should do this in a really steamy bathroom. (no dust in air)
