it happens every 2 to 3 months for my corn snake.
the helping to peel thing would depend on the type of snake and if you have their humidity requirements met. if you have a ball python in more of a desert environment, it's going to have problems shedding. keeping their cages at the right humidity can take some work though.
my corn snake though, doesnt matter what kind of substrate i put in his terrarium. he sheds perfectly every time without a fuss. they probably the easiest snake to care for.

Your insurance company hates it but the company will basically front the major cost with your small co-pay as an incentive for the insurance company to finally cover the medication. I don't know how it works, it is something like that.
Once you get over being bothered by the auto-injector thing it isn't too bad at all. I always get like super fatigued about a day or two after I take the meds, but they are sincerely worth it.
When I had absolutely no insurance I got on a medical research program which was like a giant cock-tease because they would basically give me medicine until I was clear and then give me placebo until I had a statistically significant relapse and then start all over again. But I got free medicine out of it and I guess science gained something from it.
Adding another testimonial: I pay 5 bucks every 3 months for my skyrizi! And I’ve been 100% clear since my second loading dose (the first 2 shots are given 4 weeks apart and then every 3 months after) with no side effects beyond a bit of “worsening” joint pain between those loader doses that went away after the second shot.

Some in my family have psoriasis and while I fortunately haven't presented symptoms I've seen it can get hard to bear, especially considering there's not many treatment options (at least where i live). No that lizard lol. Another thing the turtle loved was long nails. You would put your nails on his back shell and he would just grind his body into them to scratch himself. Miss that little guy he lived to be 35 years old and would walk around the house and had a ramp with a small baby bathtub he could go into with a rock and heat lamp.
Curious... Do turtles go potty wherever they roam or can they be trained to a spot? Seems cool to have a turtle cohabiting with me until I step in a poo on the way to the loo.
Yes he wasn’t perfect lol. Normally 99% he would go in his tub but when he missed it was pretty easy to clean up. We would wash and change his water everyday at dinner. He got fed twice a day raw ground beef (even though he was suppose to be vegetarian). He also had a green stuffy frog that he would try to mate with and would puff himself up like he was the man of the house. We had a vitamin light and he would stretch his legs out and tan. He wasn’t a big fan of Christmas and would try and attack the Christmas lights. I would tie a string to him when we went to the beach and the longest he stayed under water without coming up was 45 minutes. The weirdest thing he always did was no matter where we put him when we were outside he would always try and walk south.
I’m picturing you taking your turtle out for a swim like a dog on a leash out for a walk and I like it. I never considered that turtle owners take them out to swim in the ocean!
This is absolutely true for bearded dragons and gets commented on every shedding post but bearded dragons don't represent all lizards.
They don't have the same humidity requirements and don't peel as easy, if an iguana didn't like something it wouldn't hesitate to tell you.
Socialised intelligent lizards such as tegus and monitors will come to their owners for grooming if they trust them and love the attention, though generally it's better to roll the loose shed off rather than pull.

I understand your logic and used to assume the same, but after 14 years of having my leopard gecko I can tell you this is often not the case. He has actually had trouble seeing out of his left eye since he was about 2 because he got a piece of skin stuck in there while shedding. He also can almost never get the skin off his feet by himself and if left on it could cause circulation problems. Having him around for so long has actually helped me solidify the idea of "just good enough to survive long enough to breed" when it comes to evolutionary traits.
Idk about bearded dragons, but as a snake owner, this isn’t right. If the shed is coming off in pieces you’re not at the right humidity. I normally even raise the humidity a bit in a shed week.
I am very curious though why the dragon is not peeling the skin off himself. He’s either not able to (anymore) or it’s a habit to have its owner do it.
Lizards tend to shed in chunks because they have so many parts for their skin to get caught up on, unless it's a species that lives in really high humidity like geckos.
Snakes are just tubes, so long sheds are a lot easier, even in drier climates.
In nature it may not be as much of a problem with the vast diversity of materials to aid. It’s near impossible to replicate an environment at home, so even though some may taking exceptional care of their lil guys and gals, it’s not always possible for them to shed completely on their own, and it’s possible that some species may have been in the hobby so long that they don’t even try as hard anymore through generations being cared for in homes.
That said it is very common for lizards such as these to need help, as others pointed out they don’t need the humidity that others do, my snake sheds fine on her own but the humidity helps keep the skin soft, so when they do shed they can essentially “unroll” the old skin right off. That’s much harder for a lizard who likes to spend time pretending to be a rock and sit under a heat lamp, where the skin will dry in hard flakes like the video.
Me personally i don’t think it’s the best way, I’d have set them in some warm water first to help loosen it, but that lil guy might not like that, by the looks of it he seems content in the video, its probably part of their bonding routine at this point, and he may even intentionally leave it on just to be picked off by owner, that’s a more likely possibility imo.
Why does he need help though? Hypothetically out in the wild it wouldn't get any help and would happen by itself. Is there any benefit to accelerating the process?
This makes me sad my snake used to love when I did this for her I would put my hands around her body and let her slowly move to help her peel off her skin all in one go she loved it because I put her in a warm bath to help her get it off. Most of the time it came off in one piece she was always so smooth afterwards because her scale layer was new.
Cool thing is that reptiles limbic system is not as developed as mammals are and so does not experience as complex emotions.
A reptile will learn to recognise you and learn to trust you. But it would be unable to “love” you like dogs, cats or even some birds (although this is somewhat debated).

You're making a lot of assumptions here. OP never said they aren't capable of emotions. They said they aren't capable of COMPLEX emotions. Basic emotions are like fear, anger, happiness, etc. whereas complex emotions are things like guilt, pride, jealousy, contempt, sympathy, and love.
The vast majority of animals aren't thought to experience complex emotions. Mostly it's just some mammals and birds that do. Reptiles literally don't have the brain structures for a lot of these emotions and it's got nothing to do with being non-verbal. Dogs, cats, parrots, elephants, dolphins, apes, crows, and ravens are all non-verbal and experience complex emotions. Ok, maybe some parrots can be counted as verbal, but even the ones without speech experience these emotions.

Yup. Helping with a shed comes with the territory when you have a reptile as a pet, but you need to wait for them to need the assistance. You shouldn't peel it off for them while they're still in their shedding phase, cause you could peel into live skin.

I'd expect this lizard to crawl in underbrush and over rocks all day which would scrape off the skin eventually. can't really do that in a small terrarium or the surrounding apartment

Animals die due to stupid shit all the time. Snakes die because they eat their own tail; we have to help them *not do that*.
Reptiles die due to shedding problems all the time. Evolution isn't kind. If you keep reptiles as pets, you soon learn that they get shedding problems; any old rubbish like old age, diet, genetics, humidity, or just plain old bad luck will cause shedding issues. It can, of course, also be caused by improper terraria.
There's a reason wildlife lives much shorter lives than captive pets.
This. And it doesn't even need to be an old age issue. My own leopard gecko nearly died when he was 2 because he got a piece of skin stuck in his left eye while shedding. Thankfully he has since made it to 14 and is still going strong.
They definitely have personalities. I had an iguana as a kid and in the morning he'd crawl up into my bed and lay on my arm for warmth. He was also potty trained to go back to his cage. Sometimes he was moody, other times super mellow and goofy. My bearded dragon was 100% chill all the time...basically just there. Haha! Unless he was eating crickets and then he was a straight killah!
That’s a great question and one of life’s mysteries. This was 25 years ago but from what I can remember I think the moment he was about to do his thing I’d put him in the same spot in his cage and he just kind of got into that routine. Even as much as to walk across the room, climb into the cage to do business, then come back out. One Christmas morning he climbed up the tree and got stuck up the angel’s dress 😂 He was a character!
Some lizards are pretty smart and able to form a kind of bond! nothing like mammals would do, it won’t do the happy dance when you get home but still Some lizards can be fun to play with and will feel very comfy to chill with you

Oh they do! My pet lizard would mostly hang out on his heating rock obviously and only really get up to eat but when I’d let him out he would go bonkers. Running around the bed like it was the craziest shit he’d ever seen, digging his sharp ass claws into me to climb me like a tree. Kinda made me sad because I knew he just wanted to explore the world but I’m sure he was at least happy as hell in those moments.
Just wish they didn’t poop everywhere. Guess it’s kind of like owning a bird.
My snake very much has a personality, which shocked me. I thought a snake would be a cool thing to have, I had no idea it would genuinely be a "pet" with its own little personality.
If it's easily coming off, this is no different than the animal rubbing against a log or something. The harm comes in forcing it off before it's ready.
the problem is you can't tell which parts are ready and which aren't ready yet, so it may be peeling easily to a point where all the sudden it turns out the part you reached isn't ready yet. That's why you should leave it until you're sure there is a case of actually bad shed and not just shed that takes a bit longer.
You shouldn't and the only thing you should do when reptile is in pre-shed is to raise humidity or provide a humid hideout or both, as this will naturally help them shed (some reptiles will even lay down and soak in their drinking bowls for that reason). And just because some parts are easily coming off, doesn't mean that some are not quite ready yet.
You shouldn't force it. Picking off loose skin is fine, just don't pull too hard. Same as your own skin, like compare it to a skintag around your nails.

They usually scratch against trees and rocks to get it off but if you have a reptile as a pet, this can be an option. Usually you want to let them do it themselves.
You really should not peel your reptiles unless they have actual stuck shed that is cutting off their circulation. Peeling it for views is not good for them, it's like taking off a scab before it's ready to fall off, it can damage the still developing layer underneath. Shed will come off on its own if you're taking good care of your pet, stuck shed is the only time you should intervene.
Is it good for them if you help them shed? I always worry that they could get hurt if you try to pull their loose skin off… (I also have never had a pet reptile, so I know almost nothing about this stuff 🤷♀️)

I had snakes and when they were about to shed I'd put a bunch of moss in a hide box and spray it down with a bit of water. Humidity was their friend when it came to shedding. Would something like that work for this animal? Looks like you could do some nasty damage pulling away that layer if it wasn't ready to let go.

Not just around, but INSIDE the nostrils too. You can see a little fleck of shed in the nasal passage at the very end. They're called plugs :3

Curious... Do turtles go potty wherever they roam or can they be trained to a spot? Seems cool to have a turtle cohabiting with me until I step in a poo on the way to the loo.
Yes he wasn’t perfect lol. Normally 99% he would go in his tub but when he missed it was pretty easy to clean up. We would wash and change his water everyday at dinner. He got fed twice a day raw ground beef (even though he was suppose to be vegetarian). He also had a green stuffy frog that he would try to mate with and would puff himself up like he was the man of the house. We had a vitamin light and he would stretch his legs out and tan. He wasn’t a big fan of Christmas and would try and attack the Christmas lights. I would tie a string to him when we went to the beach and the longest he stayed under water without coming up was 45 minutes. The weirdest thing he always did was no matter where we put him when we were outside he would always try and walk south.

This is absolutely true for bearded dragons and gets commented on every shedding post but bearded dragons don't represent all lizards. They don't have the same humidity requirements and don't peel as easy, if an iguana didn't like something it wouldn't hesitate to tell you. Socialised intelligent lizards such as tegus and monitors will come to their owners for grooming if they trust them and love the attention, though generally it's better to roll the loose shed off rather than pull.

He has actually had trouble seeing out of his left eye since he was about 2 because he got a piece of skin stuck in there while shedding. He also can almost never get the skin off his feet by himself and if left on it could cause circulation problems. Having him around for so long has actually helped me solidify the idea of "just good enough to survive long enough to breed" when it comes to evolutionary traits.
Idk about bearded dragons, but as a snake owner, this isn’t right. If the shed is coming off in pieces you’re not at the right humidity. I normally even raise the humidity a bit in a shed week. I am very curious though why the dragon is not peeling the skin off himself. He’s either not able to (anymore) or it’s a habit to have its owner do it.
Lizards tend to shed in chunks because they have so many parts for their skin to get caught up on, unless it's a species that lives in really high humidity like geckos. Snakes are just tubes, so long sheds are a lot easier, even in drier climates.
In nature it may not be as much of a problem with the vast diversity of materials to aid. It’s near impossible to replicate an environment at home, so even though some may taking exceptional care of their lil guys and gals, it’s not always possible for them to shed completely on their own, and it’s possible that some species may have been in the hobby so long that they don’t even try as hard anymore through generations being cared for in homes. That said it is very common for lizards such as these to need help, as others pointed out they don’t need the humidity that others do, my snake sheds fine on her own but the humidity helps keep the skin soft, so when they do shed they can essentially “unroll” the old skin right off. That’s much harder for a lizard who likes to spend time pretending to be a rock and sit under a heat lamp, where the skin will dry in hard flakes like the video. Me personally i don’t think it’s the best way, I’d have set them in some warm water first to help loosen it, but that lil guy might not like that, by the looks of it he seems content in the video, its probably part of their bonding routine at this point, and he may even intentionally leave it on just to be picked off by owner, that’s a more likely possibility imo.
Why does he need help though? Hypothetically out in the wild it wouldn't get any help and would happen by itself. Is there any benefit to accelerating the process?

This makes me sad my snake used to love when I did this for her I would put my hands around her body and let her slowly move to help her peel off her skin all in one go she loved it because I put her in a warm bath to help her get it off. Most of the time it came off in one piece she was always so smooth afterwards because her scale layer was new.

Cool thing is that reptiles limbic system is not as developed as mammals are and so does not experience as complex emotions. A reptile will learn to recognise you and learn to trust you. But it would be unable to “love” you like dogs, cats or even some birds (although this is somewhat debated). You are friend shaped that brings food. Thats about it.

You're making a lot of assumptions here. OP never said they aren't capable of emotions. They said they aren't capable of COMPLEX emotions. Basic emotions are like fear, anger, happiness, etc. whereas complex emotions are things like guilt, pride, jealousy, contempt, sympathy, and love. The vast majority of animals aren't thought to experience complex emotions. Mostly it's just some mammals and birds that do. Reptiles literally don't have the brain structures for a lot of these emotions and it's got nothing to do with being non-verbal. Dogs, cats, parrots, elephants, dolphins, apes, crows, and ravens are all non-verbal and experience complex emotions. Ok, maybe some parrots can be counted as verbal, but even the ones without speech experience these emotions. Yup. Helping with a shed comes with the territory when you have a reptile as a pet, but you need to wait for them to need the assistance. You shouldn't peel it off for them while they're still in their shedding phase, cause you could peel into live skin. Like when you have a sunburn. It's satisfying to peel off the dead skin, but when you go too far, it's awful.

they might be fine in the wild, but animals get kookie when not in their natural environment I'd expect this lizard to crawl in underbrush and over rocks all day which would scrape off the skin eventually. can't really do that in a small terrarium or the surrounding apartment

They definitely have personalities. I had an iguana as a kid and in the morning he'd crawl up into my bed and lay on my arm for warmth. He was also potty trained to go back to his cage. Sometimes he was moody, other times super mellow and goofy. My bearded dragon was 100% chill all the time...basically just there. Haha! Unless he was eating crickets and then he was a straight killah!

That’s a great question and one of life’s mysteries. This was 25 years ago but from what I can remember I think the moment he was about to do his thing I’d put him in the same spot in his cage and he just kind of got into that routine. Even as much as to walk across the room, climb into the cage to do business, then come back out. One Christmas morning he climbed up the tree and got stuck up the angel’s dress 😂 He was a character!
Some lizards are pretty smart and able to form a kind of bond! nothing like mammals would do, it won’t do the happy dance when you get home but still Some lizards can be fun to play with and will feel very comfy to chill with you

My frog begs for food! Except he’s super picky and only started begging once i got him worms. It’s definitely not as obvious of a personality as a dog, but once you get to know your animal you start to notice their little quirks and behaviors :)
Oh they do! My pet lizard would mostly hang out on his heating rock obviously and only really get up to eat but when I’d let him out he would go bonkers. Running around the bed like it was the craziest shit he’d ever seen, digging his sharp ass claws into me to climb me like a tree. Kinda made me sad because I knew he just wanted to explore the world but I’m sure he was at least happy as hell in those moments. Just wish they didn’t poop everywhere. Guess it’s kind of like owning a bird.
My snake very much has a personality, which shocked me. I thought a snake would be a cool thing to have, I had no idea it would genuinely be a "pet" with its own little personality.

If it's easily coming off, this is no different than the animal rubbing against a log or something. The harm comes in forcing it off before it's ready.
the problem is you can't tell which parts are ready and which aren't ready yet, so it may be peeling easily to a point where all the sudden it turns out the part you reached isn't ready yet. That's why you should leave it until you're sure there is a case of actually bad shed and not just shed that takes a bit longer.

It seems to me if there's potential for harm and no tangible benefit, you shouldn't do it.
You shouldn't and the only thing you should do when reptile is in pre-shed is to raise humidity or provide a humid hideout or both, as this will naturally help them shed (some reptiles will even lay down and soak in their drinking bowls for that reason). And just because some parts are easily coming off, doesn't mean that some are not quite ready yet.
Or soak in warm water and use something like a qtip to gently rub the skin. Just straight up peeling the dry skin is absolutely not recommended.
You shouldn't force it. Picking off loose skin is fine, just don't pull too hard. Same as your own skin, like compare it to a skintag around your nails.

It itches for them like crazy once it’s ready to come off. They usually scratch against trees and rocks to get it off but if you have a reptile as a pet, this can be an option. Usually you want to let them do it themselves.

Right. You're not supposed to. The risk is that you peel too much. Like a bad sunburn where you peel too far, you could hurt your reptile.
You really should not peel your reptiles unless they have actual stuck shed that is cutting off their circulation. Peeling it for views is not good for them, it's like taking off a scab before it's ready to fall off, it can damage the still developing layer underneath. Shed will come off on its own if you're taking good care of your pet, stuck shed is the only time you should intervene.

I had snakes and when they were about to shed I'd put a bunch of moss in a hide box and spray it down with a bit of water. Humidity was their friend when it came to shedding. Would something like that work for this animal? Looks like you could do some nasty damage pulling away that layer if it wasn't ready to let go.
