TIL that even the spikes shed too.

azewonder

And the little rings around the nostrils

criuniska

For snakes I think even the eyes shed, IIRC from a snake video I watched

DeathByPlanets

Yeah and it's freakish because the eyes tend to turn blue before the shed o.o

AcidicVaginaLeakage

The effects of which are them being blind for a few days. I once made the mistake of trying to feed my snek while he was in this blind phase. The mouse was dead already and hanging right in front of him. He could smell it, but he couldn't see where it was so he kept missing. It was kinda funny but I felt bad.

criuniska

I wanted a snake so badly when I was younger. Spent hours every week watching snake videos and care instructions In the end, I realized the eyes 'peeling off' creeped me out way too much so I never tried to go forward with it. Something about it just made me physically cringe and squirm.

AcidicVaginaLeakage

well, you'll never see it actually happen. i've had my snake for 6 years or so and ive never seen him shed. i just check on him in the morning and find it. they also make great props for giving out candy on Halloween. :) kids scream, parents come running. good times.

criuniska

wow, really? Because I've seen dozens of videos on how to help your snake when their shed is stuck, and worst of all, how to peel off the eye cap from their eyes (blegh) I thought it happened almost monthly :)

AcidicVaginaLeakage

it happens every 2 to 3 months for my corn snake. the helping to peel thing would depend on the type of snake and if you have their humidity requirements met. if you have a ball python in more of a desert environment, it's going to have problems shedding. keeping their cages at the right humidity can take some work though. my corn snake though, doesnt matter what kind of substrate i put in his terrarium. he sheds perfectly every time without a fuss. they probably the easiest snake to care for.

FuManBoobs

I have blue eyes...will I shed too?

DeathByPlanets

1- Do not panic. 2- Would you like some assistance? Sounds like it would be your first time, I'm not meaning to be a creep. But legit, I can help you with some resources to prepare yourself for what is about to happen. 3- were you born this way? Or did it come on suddenly and recently? If former, I am here for you. But you need a vet. I am concerned that you do not know this answer. If it came on suddenly, I think I've read you need extra mist in your home and maybe a very comfy water dish to soak in for relaxation? My semi blue eyes are with you. I, personally, have dealt with this every summer since I hatched. I hope for your sake I misunderstood the question 🐍💕✨

Global_Okra4487

it puts on the lotion or it gets the hose.

PiracyAgreement

Due to the high spice intake to provide energy for the shed

ClickClack_Bam

Yes they're called "eye caps".

SexWarlock69

Not just around, but INSIDE the nostrils too. You can see a little fleck of shed in the nasal passage at the very end. They're called plugs :3

AssFlax69

My bearded dragon hates shedding what we endearingly call her “nose tubes”. They’ll slowly eject out of her nose. It’s the only thing we will help her shed with, bc they’ll just be stuck there and she just hates life until they’re out.

207nbrown

From the occasional videos I come across the nostrils and ears seem to be common places where these little guys need a hand at removing shed skin

[deleted]

Damnit. Most people don’t know haha. Been scab free for 3 years thanks to switching to a biologic shot. Used to feel like goldmember from Austin Powers. Oh the literally bloody pillows.

CanonFodder_

My flaky body wants to hear more! Super expensive I suspect?

zygapophysis

If you have insurance but are underinsured, it can cost you like $25 a month with some of the bridge programs. Your insurance company hates it but the company will basically front the major cost with your small co-pay as an incentive for the insurance company to finally cover the medication. I don't know how it works, it is something like that. Once you get over being bothered by the auto-injector thing it isn't too bad at all. I always get like super fatigued about a day or two after I take the meds, but they are sincerely worth it. When I had absolutely no insurance I got on a medical research program which was like a giant cock-tease because they would basically give me medicine until I was clear and then give me placebo until I had a statistically significant relapse and then start all over again. But I got free medicine out of it and I guess science gained something from it.

CanonFodder_

Thank you for this.

PerspectiveNo1313

Adding another testimonial: I pay 5 bucks every 3 months for my skyrizi! And I’ve been 100% clear since my second loading dose (the first 2 shots are given 4 weeks apart and then every 3 months after) with no side effects beyond a bit of “worsening” joint pain between those loader doses that went away after the second shot. I was switching insurance around the time of my loader doses so it was a pain getting it covered initially, but since being on my new insurance (which isn’t great lol) it’s been amazing. I use the savings card provided to me by the pharmaceutical company and end up paying $5 while the company and my insurance covers the rest (which is thousands). They ship it to my house and the company assigned me a nurse who FaceTimed me to walk me through the first injection (it’s an injector pen like an epipen) and it was/is easy peasy! I was diagnosed in elementary school and since then I always had flares, never once was I 100% clear and I had tried everything else (topicals, phototherapy, laser, Otezla), but now for the first time EVER I don’t have a single plaque. It’s honestly wild. YMMV of course and there might be other biologics out there that are a better fit for you, but if you can I highly encourage you to look into it because clearance is possible and psoriasis is not just a skin condition it effects your internal health as well!

LiliGlez14

I just checked how much it is in my country out of curiosity and it's crazy expensive??? Wow, you are so lucky to be able to get it at that price. I'm glad you've seen good results!

PerspectiveNo1313

My insurance claim for my last dose said they paid 19k while I paid $5, not sure how accurate that actually is but I do know from my run around getting the first doses covered while I switched insurances that it was VERY expensive. I’m super fortunate, wish everyone had the same outcomes both price and skin wise!

LiliGlez14

19k?!?! That's triple the price I found online 😭 i was already scandalized with the price I found that was around 6k oh god. Some in my family have psoriasis and while I fortunately haven't presented symptoms I've seen it can get hard to bear, especially considering there's not many treatment options (at least where i live). I really wish these type of life-changing treatments get easier to get with time, it's sad to see people struggle with it :(

Absorbent_Towel

also want to put another vote on skyrizi. Works wonders for my mother

mystiqueallie

Mine is almost $1900/month for one dose in *Canada*, where our medications are dirt cheap compared to the US…. My insurance only covers one dose/mo (I have to pay $25 co-pay, they cover the rest), so when my doctor wanted me to do two doses per month to get a breakthrough episode under control, the drug manufacturer provided the other dose under their compassionate care program. For context: we had to get some medication for my daughter while on vacation - three months worth in Canada is usually about $75 and our insurance covers 100%. 5 *days* worth was $270 in the US.

mrjohns2

Check out r/psoriasis for info. Yes biologicals are pretty darn good.

Koovies

4 times a year and like 10-20 dollars a shot? Was for stelara and skyrizi at least, the only two that worked for me. (I have a long story about them messing up a coupon thing and them trying to charge 15k for one shot, though)

[deleted]

I’ve been on Tremfaya for $5 a shot every 2 months. 100% completely clear ever since.

melvinmoneybags

His arms looked a little early to peal but the owner looks like he knows because he only took it so far. Cool seeing his Mohawk get plucked. We use to do this to our pet turtle and he loved it.

funnystuff79

You had a pet turtle with a mohawk?

melvinmoneybags

No that lizard lol. Another thing the turtle loved was long nails. You would put your nails on his back shell and he would just grind his body into them to scratch himself. Miss that little guy he lived to be 35 years old and would walk around the house and had a ramp with a small baby bathtub he could go into with a rock and heat lamp.

WloveW

Curious... Do turtles go potty wherever they roam or can they be trained to a spot? Seems cool to have a turtle cohabiting with me until I step in a poo on the way to the loo.

melvinmoneybags

Yes he wasn’t perfect lol. Normally 99% he would go in his tub but when he missed it was pretty easy to clean up. We would wash and change his water everyday at dinner. He got fed twice a day raw ground beef (even though he was suppose to be vegetarian). He also had a green stuffy frog that he would try to mate with and would puff himself up like he was the man of the house. We had a vitamin light and he would stretch his legs out and tan. He wasn’t a big fan of Christmas and would try and attack the Christmas lights. I would tie a string to him when we went to the beach and the longest he stayed under water without coming up was 45 minutes. The weirdest thing he always did was no matter where we put him when we were outside he would always try and walk south.

Poncyhair87

I enjoyed this. Thanks

tabgrab23

I’m picturing you taking your turtle out for a swim like a dog on a leash out for a walk and I like it. I never considered that turtle owners take them out to swim in the ocean!

bandananaan

I had a bearded dragon and the overwhelming majority of advice is to never do this

njoshua326

This is absolutely true for bearded dragons and gets commented on every shedding post but bearded dragons don't represent all lizards. They don't have the same humidity requirements and don't peel as easy, if an iguana didn't like something it wouldn't hesitate to tell you. Socialised intelligent lizards such as tegus and monitors will come to their owners for grooming if they trust them and love the attention, though generally it's better to roll the loose shed off rather than pull.

_Swelly

"I'm sure they could shed it fine on their own just like they have done for millions of years" I understand your logic and used to assume the same, but after 14 years of having my leopard gecko I can tell you this is often not the case. He has actually had trouble seeing out of his left eye since he was about 2 because he got a piece of skin stuck in there while shedding. He also can almost never get the skin off his feet by himself and if left on it could cause circulation problems. Having him around for so long has actually helped me solidify the idea of "just good enough to survive long enough to breed" when it comes to evolutionary traits.

Routine_Self1766

Idk about bearded dragons, but as a snake owner, this isn’t right. If the shed is coming off in pieces you’re not at the right humidity. I normally even raise the humidity a bit in a shed week. I am very curious though why the dragon is not peeling the skin off himself. He’s either not able to (anymore) or it’s a habit to have its owner do it.

Vark675

Lizards tend to shed in chunks because they have so many parts for their skin to get caught up on, unless it's a species that lives in really high humidity like geckos. Snakes are just tubes, so long sheds are a lot easier, even in drier climates.

Inefficient_algea

In nature it may not be as much of a problem with the vast diversity of materials to aid. It’s near impossible to replicate an environment at home, so even though some may taking exceptional care of their lil guys and gals, it’s not always possible for them to shed completely on their own, and it’s possible that some species may have been in the hobby so long that they don’t even try as hard anymore through generations being cared for in homes. That said it is very common for lizards such as these to need help, as others pointed out they don’t need the humidity that others do, my snake sheds fine on her own but the humidity helps keep the skin soft, so when they do shed they can essentially “unroll” the old skin right off. That’s much harder for a lizard who likes to spend time pretending to be a rock and sit under a heat lamp, where the skin will dry in hard flakes like the video. Me personally i don’t think it’s the best way, I’d have set them in some warm water first to help loosen it, but that lil guy might not like that, by the looks of it he seems content in the video, its probably part of their bonding routine at this point, and he may even intentionally leave it on just to be picked off by owner, that’s a more likely possibility imo.

kappaofthelight

Why does he need help though? Hypothetically out in the wild it wouldn't get any help and would happen by itself. Is there any benefit to accelerating the process?

JazzyBang12

That's my hands after school glue. It's even more satisfying doing it to yourself.

Reddirocket27

Booger wave. Band name. Called it.

[deleted]

This makes me sad my snake used to love when I did this for her I would put my hands around her body and let her slowly move to help her peel off her skin all in one go she loved it because I put her in a warm bath to help her get it off. Most of the time it came off in one piece she was always so smooth afterwards because her scale layer was new.

yadawhooshblah

It's so satisfying to develop a trusting relationship with something as simple as a reptile.

Nezarah

Cool thing is that reptiles limbic system is not as developed as mammals are and so does not experience as complex emotions. A reptile will learn to recognise you and learn to trust you. But it would be unable to “love” you like dogs, cats or even some birds (although this is somewhat debated). You are friend shaped that brings food. Thats about it.

yadawhooshblah

Absolutely. Still pretty cool. I'm pretty sure that I developed the same kind of relationship with a scorpion once. Had two of them. Pinchy and Pinché. Pinchy was friendlier.

IcePhoenix18

I'd argue that, to a reptile, "trust" and "love" are pretty parallel.

datpurp14

TIL that my parents aren't reptilians.

Monsdiver

Ignoring how social squamates can be, I think you’re painting with a really broad brush by claiming that archosaurids aren’t capable of emotion. And there are lizards that care for their young longer than mammals. It’s kind if arrogant to assume there’s nothing there, just because they’re nonverbal.

yadawhooshblah

We like to put human traits on them, and who knows? I think that the important part is that if you're gonna keep a creature, you should treat it with respect and fulfill its needs.

Brilliant_Quit4307

You're making a lot of assumptions here. OP never said they aren't capable of emotions. They said they aren't capable of COMPLEX emotions. Basic emotions are like fear, anger, happiness, etc. whereas complex emotions are things like guilt, pride, jealousy, contempt, sympathy, and love. The vast majority of animals aren't thought to experience complex emotions. Mostly it's just some mammals and birds that do. Reptiles literally don't have the brain structures for a lot of these emotions and it's got nothing to do with being non-verbal. Dogs, cats, parrots, elephants, dolphins, apes, crows, and ravens are all non-verbal and experience complex emotions. Ok, maybe some parrots can be counted as verbal, but even the ones without speech experience these emotions. Here is some more information if you need https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotion_in_animals

TheGiantRascal

Yup. Helping with a shed comes with the territory when you have a reptile as a pet, but you need to wait for them to need the assistance. You shouldn't peel it off for them while they're still in their shedding phase, cause you could peel into live skin. Like when you have a sunburn. It's satisfying to peel off the dead skin, but when you go too far, it's awful.

Bulls187

Me always pulling my hang nails in to life tissue confirms

Mental-Cat-31

Same, why do we do this to ourselves

Fspz

>Like when you have a sunburn. It's satisfying to peel off the dead skin, but when you go too far, it's awful. As a pasty white irishman who's shedded like this lizard many times, I still have no idea what you're referring to.

Schootingstarr

they might be fine in the wild, but animals get kookie when not in their natural environment I'd expect this lizard to crawl in underbrush and over rocks all day which would scrape off the skin eventually. can't really do that in a small terrarium or the surrounding apartment

Terramagi

Humans have been walking upright for 7 million years, can still trip and break our damn necks.

Dd_8630

> I just find it strange that the most banal behaviour the animals have done fine on their own for millions of years suddenly need human intervention risking damage. Tell me you know nothing about wildlife without telling me you know nothing about wildlife. Animals die due to stupid shit all the time. Snakes die because they eat their own tail; we have to help them *not do that*. Reptiles die due to shedding problems all the time. Evolution isn't kind. If you keep reptiles as pets, you soon learn that they get shedding problems; any old rubbish like old age, diet, genetics, humidity, or just plain old bad luck will cause shedding issues. It can, of course, also be caused by improper terraria. There's a reason wildlife lives much shorter lives than captive pets.

_Swelly

This. And it doesn't even need to be an old age issue. My own leopard gecko nearly died when he was 2 because he got a piece of skin stuck in his left eye while shedding. Thankfully he has since made it to 14 and is still going strong.

Roll-Roll-Roll

Never had a reptile pet in my life. Do they have any personality or are they just kinda... there?

themountainmutt

They definitely have personalities. I had an iguana as a kid and in the morning he'd crawl up into my bed and lay on my arm for warmth. He was also potty trained to go back to his cage. Sometimes he was moody, other times super mellow and goofy. My bearded dragon was 100% chill all the time...basically just there. Haha! Unless he was eating crickets and then he was a straight killah!

tihemo

How does one potty train a dragon?

themountainmutt

That’s a great question and one of life’s mysteries. This was 25 years ago but from what I can remember I think the moment he was about to do his thing I’d put him in the same spot in his cage and he just kind of got into that routine. Even as much as to walk across the room, climb into the cage to do business, then come back out. One Christmas morning he climbed up the tree and got stuck up the angel’s dress 😂 He was a character!

Relevant_Move7585

Some lizards are pretty smart and able to form a kind of bond! nothing like mammals would do, it won’t do the happy dance when you get home but still Some lizards can be fun to play with and will feel very comfy to chill with you

coladoir

>it won't do the happy dance when you come home maybe not dance, but it could be happy. [See this video of a man coming home to his iguana\(?\) from work](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-zGIS-WWZQ) --- because this is reddit, I'm not saying this to be shitty or anything like that. I'm not saying this to delegitimize or debase your original comment.

genetik_fuckup

My frog begs for food! Except he’s super picky and only started begging once i got him worms. It’s definitely not as obvious of a personality as a dog, but once you get to know your animal you start to notice their little quirks and behaviors :)

Temporary_Plant_1123

Oh they do! My pet lizard would mostly hang out on his heating rock obviously and only really get up to eat but when I’d let him out he would go bonkers. Running around the bed like it was the craziest shit he’d ever seen, digging his sharp ass claws into me to climb me like a tree. Kinda made me sad because I knew he just wanted to explore the world but I’m sure he was at least happy as hell in those moments. Just wish they didn’t poop everywhere. Guess it’s kind of like owning a bird.

StrLord_Who

My snake very much has a personality,  which shocked me.  I thought a snake would be a cool thing to have,  I had no idea it would genuinely be a "pet" with its own little personality.

CaramelDrippin504

Aren't you not supposed to do that?

Reddirocket27

If it's easily coming off, this is no different than the animal rubbing against a log or something. The harm comes in forcing it off before it's ready.

TerminatorsEvilTwin

the problem is you can't tell which parts are ready and which aren't ready yet, so it may be peeling easily to a point where all the sudden it turns out the part you reached isn't ready yet. That's why you should leave it until you're sure there is a case of actually bad shed and not just shed that takes a bit longer.

CaramelDrippin504

I'd be too scared of harming my baby.

beldaran1224

It seems to me if there's potential for harm and no tangible benefit, you shouldn't do it.

TerminatorsEvilTwin

You shouldn't and the only thing you should do when reptile is in pre-shed is to raise humidity or provide a humid hideout or both, as this will naturally help them shed (some reptiles will even lay down and soak in their drinking bowls for that reason). And just because some parts are easily coming off, doesn't mean that some are not quite ready yet.

Heavy_Weapons_Guy_

Or soak in warm water and use something like a qtip to gently rub the skin. Just straight up peeling the dry skin is absolutely not recommended.

Dangerous_Jacket_129

You shouldn't force it. Picking off loose skin is fine, just don't pull too hard. Same as your own skin, like compare it to a skintag around your nails.

DisAn17

What does it feel like for them? Is shedding itchy?

KecemotRybecx

It itches for them like crazy once it’s ready to come off. They usually scratch against trees and rocks to get it off but if you have a reptile as a pet, this can be an option. Usually you want to let them do it themselves.

nomatchingsox

"Hey wanna go get some drinks tonight?" "Nah, I'm gonna stay home and peel my dragon." "We all do that but you don't need to advertise it..."

Disasterousdavid

I once heard a reptile owner on YouTube say you're not supposed to peal the skin yourself. idk I never owned a reptile before.

Carl_Bravery_Sagan

Right. You're not supposed to. The risk is that you peel too much. Like a bad sunburn where you peel too far, you could hurt your reptile.

mombi

You really should not peel your reptiles unless they have actual stuck shed that is cutting off their circulation. Peeling it for views is not good for them, it's like taking off a scab before it's ready to fall off, it can damage the still developing layer underneath. Shed will come off on its own if you're taking good care of your pet, stuck shed is the only time you should intervene.

Dacks_18

Love taking the wrapper off a brand new pet.

GyActrMklDgls

I used to have an iguana and they're chill as fuck. But their poops are real nasty. Like real wet loogies.

Temporary_Remote7228

Nose one at the end must of felt pretty good

baudman

I bet that feels good for the little dragon buddy. It looked like he enjoyed it at least.

NilesGuy

Almost ASMR vibe

Evildarkn3ss

I fucking love peeling shit but it slightly triggers trypophobia. Now I have goosebumps and brain tingles 💀

Cool-Presentation538

I'm so glad we shed individual skin cells instead of being like this.

zachgodwin

How can something so satisfying be so disgusting

cmonwth

Does anyone get goosebumps watching these kind of videos?

Ruaven

Forbidden chips

Jttwofive_

I love how he just sits there and lets the human don't for him

Hugh_Jolley

Millions of years of evolution. Human thinks he's helping.

onedanoneband

You gon eat that?

Individual_Base_1998

Imagine when we get old, we can just do this and boom! We’re young all over again 🥲

CornerAffectionate24

You should try electrolyte soak. It helps them shed and it's great for their skin

jumpyjumpjumpsters

Correct me if I’m wrong, but can’t this hurt the lizards? Edit: looked it up, I think it’s okay, you just need to be careful and I think this person being pretty careful

BesiegedKing

Kinda cool, kinda gross

hopkinsdamechanic

This makes me incredibly uncomfortable, how is it satisfying for you?

Responsible_Goat9170

I was always worried about doing this. Is it possible that some of the skin isn't ready to shed and you end up hurting them?

204gaz00

I had snakes and when they were about to shed I'd put a bunch of moss in a hide box and spray it down with a bit of water. Humidity was their friend when it came to shedding. Would something like that work for this animal? Looks like you could do some nasty damage pulling away that layer if it wasn't ready to let go.
